WOW. I was at this game and I always talk about one play that jumped out for me. At around 43:30 Sanders runs across the field and catches Holmes before he could score. Watching it live was amazing. Sanders was so much faster than anybody else on the field. I have not seen that play since the day I saw it in person 21+ years ago and it is exactly how I remembered it, not to mention how I have described. The game is extra special as I was there with my mom. May she rest in peace. I was just describing this to my wife and did a search to check the date. I was amazed to find the entire game. Thank you for posting this.

The Fox graphics in 1996 were cutting edge. Now they are pretty archaic
Where is the first down line? The sky cam? The live fantasy updates? The real-time scoring updates?
I also wondered why did NBC & ABC not do a score bug like Fox & ESPN did
ABC finally started using one in 1997. NBC never used one for NFL games until they got the NFL again with the Sunday night package

Cowboys would go 9-2 after this game to clinch the division and playoffs. Beating the 49'ers, Packers and Patriots late in the season. Their defense was still more than capable of a SB run.
Unfortunately the offense just couldn't put it together. What little chance they had in 1996 was lost when Irvin their best player got hurt on their first possession against Carolina.

I don't remember any other game Summerall and Madden called from Buffalo. Summerall called it a "rare visit" by the Cowboys. In fact, it was only their third game at Buffalo in 27 seasons since the merger, the others coming in 1971 (at War Memorial Stadium) and 1984. And they've returned to Buffalo only twice since then, in 2007 and 2015. They've also played only 5 times in the Metroplex -- 1976, 1981, 1993, 2003, and 2011.

Really kind of an end of an era for both teams. The Bills lost a playoff game at home for the first time ever at the end of this season. Afterwards Jim Kelly retired. Aikman was injured and the Cowboys weren't nearly as good as they had been. Plus the salary cap really impacted both franchises.

Karo French All those turnovers made the final score of Super Bowl XXVII worse then it really should've been. The Bills were down by 14 going into the 4th and Bruce caused Emmitt to fumble,Aikman recovered. Then the Bills went 3 and out and the Cowboys scored 21 points after that. In Super Bowl XXVIII,the Bills had a 13-6 lead at half-time and were only down by 7 in the 4th qtr before the Cowboys put the game away with a 4th down td run. Thurman doesn't fumble on the 3rd play of the 2nd half, the Bills continue to wear down the Dallas defense and score more points, they win that Super Bowl!

Buffalo’s defense was finesse for most of their Super Bow run. They didn’t take on blocks straight up, and this showed in the Super Bowls versus the physical NFC teams. The mid-90s Bills were more stout, but by then the offense was declining. They never got their defense and offense at their best simultaneously. Timing. Similar to 1988. Their defense was fantastic, but their offense had yet to hit its stride.

    • @BuffaloWyoming

Yep, the Buffalo lines on bith sides of the ball cost them in those Super Bowls. Bill Polian built those lines. Same thing Bill did in Indianapolis. The Colts would get manhandled in the playoffs. At lesst the Colts did get a very lucky championship.

Dallas was upset to the Bills and started 1-3 and finished the season 10-6 and beat the Super Bowl champs who was Green Bay that year. It was a very weird year for Dallas although they destroyed Minnesota in the wildcard and fell short to the Carolina Panthers in the divisional they still were a great team just needed a coach. Jimmy was gone and there was no discipline there. Carolina was a weird Cinderella story and were an expansion team Green Bay got a free ticket to the super bowl that year.

John Sanders Irvin was out the first 5 games in 1996 because he was caught doing cocaine in an Irving hotel to celebrate his birthday
Novacek, Aikman’s safety valve at tight end, was out the entire season with a back issue and never played again
Those Cowboys teams from 96-99 were meh but didn’t have that killer instinct the 3 out of 4 years had because of poor drafts, lack of discipline off the field, the salary cap, and of course Jimmy Johnson. Remember at the 1994 owner’s meeting in Orlando, Jerry Jones in a drunken boast said that there were 100 coaches that could have won a Super Bowl with this team
Well Switzer was that coach. Many of those players from the back-to-back titles were still there in 1995. Also there was some luck too in that season.
They got blown out at home by the 49ers mid season who were without Steve Young in that game. If you want to see Peak Jerry Rice, he caught a little slant from Elvis Grbac & took off for a TD. And then it was a repeat of the NFC Title Game. 49ers turning Cowboys turnovers into TDs
Late in the season Dallas had a stumble in Philadelphia but San Francisco losing to Atlanta on the last Sunday of the season gave Dallas a chance to clinch the NFC 1-seed in Phoenix against the pitiful Cardinals on Christmas night
Dallas blasted the Eagles in the divisional round while the previous day the Packers upset the 49ers in San Francisco. I think if there was another Cowboys-49ers NFC Championship, 49ers likely would have won that game, and then win the Super Bowl.
Green Bay hung tough in that NFC Title Game but they didn’t have Emmitt Smith and Brett Favre throwing an interception in a NFC Title Game... to of all people Larry Brown who later became Super Bowl MVP thanks to Neil O’Donnell
      Ah... memories...
Oh and if you told me in 1996 that Wade Phillips would coach the Cowboys in the back half of the 2000s and then go on to win a Super Bowl as the defensive coordinator of the Broncos in the 2010s after a brief stint in Houston with a new NFL team there, I would have laughed at you
Then again in 1996, I was in the 7th grade

    • @mjwatts1983
      @mjwatts1983 6 років тому +1

Oh and about that 1996 season
Carolina won the NFC West pretty convincingly, Jacksonville made the playoffs when Morten Anderson shanked a field goal at the end of the last game to put the Jaguars in the playoffs
Jacksonville not only beat Buffalo but went in to Denver and upset the Broncos who were favored by 12-points. They hung around with the Patriots who were coached by Bill Parcells. The Jaguars were coached by Tom Coughlin who would win 2 Super Bowls with the Giants against the Patriots in both games
Even if Dallas did beat Carolina it would have been a Pyrrhic victory. By the end of the season, they were so beat up, the Packers would have slaughtered them. Yeah, Dallas beat the Packers in mid season at Texas Stadium on MNF, but the Packers were missing some key players as well as Texas Stadium was not kind to Favre and Dallas won 21-6 on nothing but field goals. And that happened the next season when the Cowboys traveled to Wisconsin for the first time in years and got thrashed 45-17

Yes they did run into very good teams but they also played so very poorly except against the Giants. That one they let slip away. Against the Redskins they were outmatched but after all this time it seems the refs made very bad calls that clearly hurt Buffalo.
