You can either: - Like normal fouls, force your opponent to play the previous shot again in the previous position (which most players will not do) - Nomimate a "free ball": choose any color ball to be the "on" ball. This ball now will be as if it is a red ball, meaning it is counted as 1 point if you pot it. Afterward, that ball is respotted, and you can choose any color ball to pot, including that respotted ball, and the color balls will be counted as their normal point. If you see any games in which one player has more than 147 points, it is likely that there is a free ball in that game, since having that is like having 16 reds on the table, so you have an extra 8 possible points (pot 1 free ball, and then a black)
