Q Tip freestyled over this loop in the Beasties studio. He used to come over their way and play basketball with them. The Beasties then chopped up his freestyle and added their parts to complete the song. Dope, huh? Edit: The Root Down video is great. Lots of New York early hip hop culture going on in it.
When you said that the BBoys are down for the culture, the thing is your missing the fact that the BBoys are the culture. They’ve been in the game since the early 80s. They influenced so many hip hop artists. Not to mention the artists that weren’t into hip hop. They’ve always been true to hip hop and themselves. Never sold out. Never fronted. They have always been true to the art.
Beastie Boys are legendary contributors and pioneers to the rap game, but it’s the way they incorporated so many different genres and musicality while including comedy and style that set them apart. Their stage show was legendary and while a lot of artists in the game played down their contributions they have had the respect of their peers from day one. And their peers are O.G. Artists like the guys from Public Enemy and LL Cool Jay. In fact Ad Rock listened to LL’s demo and made Rick Rubin listen to it! If you put on “Check Your Head” or “Ill Communication” you’ll find rap, punk, trippy funk instrumentals, rock, and a bunch of other hybrid stuff all meshed together and that shit stands the test of time. I still go back to them and I was in grade school when the first album came out. Keep ‘em comin!
A great reaction! You might like "The Move" from Hello Nasty. Or something newer like "Ch-Check It Out" (live on David Letterman) from their album To the 5 Boroughs.
One song I NEVER see people reacting too is the Soul Assassin's remix of So Whatcha Want. One of the few remixes I've ever heard that is 100% as good as the original. The way the bass line rolls along is amazing. And B Real fucking nails his fucking verse.
I apologize if it's been done here before, but 3 MCS and one DJ is incredible in that it is stripped down, bare bones, old school rap. It reminds me of the 1980s, bedroom rap. The kind of stuff you would hear on the street corners in the South Bronx where I grew up. Kids may have had to doo wop singing around the flaming garbage cans at night in the 50s, but we had the beatbox and freestyle rapping with a bunch of friends hanging out on the corners and on the front stoops of their building. That's what that's all reminds me of. It's a definite celebration of the culture. *Edit: I'm a first time viewer, but I just binge watched some videos on this channel and saw that 3 MCS and one DJ has been listening to. My bad. Great reaction videos. Cheers from the Bronx New York City.
Beastie Boys helped create the culture. They were some of the pioneers and every single hip-hop/rap artist will tell you the same. I get they are white, but they are legit.
