While not the most disturbing, but the most shocking episode in my opinion is the live Halloween special, the twist that nothing went wrong after all, and the re-run of a quiet night in wasn’t actually a re-run, it was the episode.
Shadow Force can’t wait! Agreed, we British are good at terrifying people. 😂 And Reece & Steve’s twists are incredible, I’ve never watched a programme with more unpredictable and amazing plots!
Emilia Robson holycrap I’ve seen all the episodes! I loved it! 12 days of Christine made me cry. I loved cheese and crackers that made me cry too. I love it. Also have you seen the Halloween special?
It doesn't get mentioned that often, but it's a brilliant episode - both for how powerful that first call is (I'm not joking when I say I had to pause the video and take a breather), also the twist when "Chloe" calls back, and suddenly it becomes a terrifying stalker story. It's the only thing I can think of any time I hear the song "Shine" now too!
I recently watched Seance Time, and I went from laughing hysterically when Pemberton’s character punched the dwarf guy, to being down right disturbed and feeling uncomfortable when the ending comes. It’s a cracking episode. Also as a doctor who fan, it was great seeing Dan Starkey (who plays Strax the Sontaran) in a number 9.
I had no idea he was in Doctor Who (hard to recognise when he's covered in blue paint!) I loved that tonal shift in Seance Time, and weirdly enough I didn't see it coming at all. Going from goofy and slapstick to genuinely chilling and spooky is no easy feat, but they managed it perfectly!
I remember discovering this show. I had no idea about what it was. I noticed that Jen from the IT Crowd was the main actor and decided to keep watching Sardines. When it endeded, I was completely blown away. I knew right away I would become a huge fan of this show
Yep, my first thought watching it was "hey, it's Jen!" By the end of Sardines, I knew this show was something quite special, which makes sense considering the people who made it. After about 5-10 minutes into episode 2 with no dialogue, I knew this was going to be experimental in all sorts of ways. You never know what they're going to do next, which is why I love it.
WeeLin that was first episode I watched because people kept talking about it! I loved it!! I actually enjoying the episodes. Also fact real history build up the horror was brilliant!
I love your analysis, and I'm really glad Sardines made it onto the list - it's my favourite one! Reminded me of another bit of foreshadowing we get at the beginning of that episode besides the R.I.P. line - when Ian and Rebecca are alone in the wardrobe, Ian says it "could be a long game". He's definitely been playing one.
Really good video. I think 'Dead Line' would be my pick. I totally bought that it had all gone wrong so when A Quiet Night In malfunctioned and the ghosts invaded, I was genuinely terrified to the core. It might be the most scared I've been since I was a child.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention that the hare statue is hidden somewhere in each episode , it’s such a brilliant series and it sometimes leaves you cold x
I mention the hare in part 2 - it comes up because, in a certain episode, there are two hares. I'd originally started writing the list as one video, but it was turning out to be far too long.
WeeLin we love trying to find it in each episode , I’m going to rewatch all the episodes you picked up on things I totally missed but I can’t wait for series 5 xxx
Just felt the need to say that your comment about the audience's impact on the plot of Seance Time really gave me some new appreciation for the ending which before now I'd just thought of as a lazy jumpscare - especially what you said around 13:47 onward. Terry wasn't the lone cause of the child's death, the audience were also at fault from their dehumanisation towards the humiliated child and the viral wide-spreading of his accident as you pointed out. The viewer being an extension of that same idea of audience deserves comeuppance just as much as Terry did - the audience deserve that final jumpscare. I could be wrong in that interpretation but it does make that scare feel justified and important rather than being one final cheap thrill and I love that
The most rewarding thing about making an analysis video is if I can help someone to enjoy or appreciate a piece of media in a new way. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I'll admit, I didn't quite come to this idea at first. Steve and Reece often make some really interesting commentary on the world of television, having worked in the field for decades as both writers and actors. But ironically, because they're so deeply involved and knowledgable about the medium, I think some of that commentary gets lost on their audience, simply because they don't have the same experience as them. I've done a bit of work in telly, so now and again I'll spot some little detail, which I'll instantly want to share with anyone I can annoy! Still, I think it's great that IN9 can be critical of television but they obviously love making it after all these years.
@@WeeLin Well I thoroughly enjoyed your analyses on the IN9 episodes you've covered and I find your insight on the industry as a whole very interesting as well. Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment - rest assured that I'm now subscribed and looking forward to watching more of your content!
Even if I just think of when Christine realises she's dead.....I lose my shit! I recently started watching the whole series again with my new girlfriend ( who is also a massive fan of everything these amazing talents have done) & was dreading the 12 days episode....because of what it does to me! And on cue, as usual....I well up!! Thankfully she thought it was sweet & showed I had actual real feelings!!lol.
When I started watching the first episode of this show, I thought it was a comedy (I didn’t know Shearsmith and Pemberton’s legacy). For 29 mins, the episode delivered on that comedy caused by awkward situations then the ending hit me like a ton of bricks ! And this is how I knew I discovered a gem that I am obsessed with till now..
Excellent video - thank you for giving attention to 'Seance Time' and 'Private View' as these episodes deserve more respect. I personally really find the more psychological episodes such as Cold Comfort really disturbing -such as a man's mental collapse in 'Diddle Diddle Dumpling and the truth about a collapsing marriage in 'To have and to hold' which would get my vote for most disturbing episode. But also some of the best episodes such as 'The Devil at Christmas' and 'riddle of the sphnix' manage to be deeply unnerving and shocking in how they manage to end their stories
Thanks! I think we share some opinions on the more psychological episodes, which are some of my favourites to talk about. Nobody writes and performs a mental or social collapse quite like these guys. To be honest, I could probably talk about this show all day. I won't say too much here, but please come back for part two... some of the episodes you've listed *may* just make an appearance.
I'm surprised you didn't bring up the fact that the episode Cold Comfort throws a red herring at the viewer by making it look like Liz is Chloe. Don't believe me? Watch it again with Liz in mind as the prankster. I was thoroughly confused at the end when it was revealed to be the boss, and kept thinking it had to be Liz and I was just missing something.
You're right, especially the moment after one of the Chloe call where she's sitting behind, holding the phone. Maybe I never suspected Liz because I like Jane Horrocks too much!
I thought it was liz as she was behind during one of the calls but I quickly thought it couldn’t be her as she’d be loud enough even if very quiet to hear by others
I have been unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of a phone call, such as the one described in 'Cold Comfort'. It is messed up. It is an absolutely crazy situation, especially when one has had no training, and has never done anything remotely like that before. I'm actually really pleased you put that episode on the list, I think the gravity of the scenario could be lost on some people. The young teen I spoke to is safe and alive, if anyone was concerned. I was able to get Police to her in time.
First of all, I am so sorry you had that experience, but I'm relieved to hear the person is alive and well. Well done on getting the police to her - you probably saved someone's life. Second, I didn't want to say in the video, and I won't go into much detail here, but I once experienced a similarly troubling phonecall at work. The circumstances were different, as this was someone I knew, plus I had support from my colleagues who called the ambulance. The person was fine in the end, but I've never forgotten what it was like to be there on the end of the phone. That's why I had to pause the episode on my first watch, and why I took extra care in the discussion part for this video. In fact, the experience might have broken the tension a little too well for me watching IN9. When Chloe called back, I felt I should have been more freaked out. Instead I was thinking "oh thank goodness, she's alive!"
@@WeeLin Thank you so much for replying - The event happened for me just over 8 months ago but it always helps to talk about it and hear from other people who've been through the same. I felt exactly the same way when Chloe called back, it took me way longer than perhaps intended to realize why he wasn't as relieved she was back as I was. And well done to you too, for getting through it, and making sure that person was okay.
idk why but seance time really fucked me up the first time I saw it. There was something about him talking to the blue demon that really shook me up. great vid
It was him talking in the little boy's voice that I found creepy, especially when you know what happened to the kid. For an episode that started with comedy and breaking tension, it does end up being genuinely scary.
After the first episode, I was hooked, and by the time I finished series 1 I had decided this was my new favourite TV show. Being from Canada, it was REALLY hard to find ways to watch this show, but I'm so glad I managed it. Never seen such a witty, mind twisting show in my life, and I think we can all agree that series 5 is gonna be absolutely bonkers!
It's so cool that Inside No 9 has viewers in Canada... also cool that I have viewers in Canada! I absolutely can't wait for series 5 - who knows what they'll come up with next?!? I've seen a few posts about casting and a couple of behind the scenes clips, but I don't want to spoil anything for myself. Very excited though!
Thanks Wee Lin for making this. I’m a huge fan of Inside No. 9. I feel it’s totally underrated, it’s up there with all the great anthology series’s like the twilight zone and one step beyond.
@@Dan_Ben_Michael If you enjoy the dark comedy elements of No 9, then I'd recommend two of Steve and Reece's earlier shows - "The League of Gentlemen" and "Psychoville". League is more sketch-based, while Psychoville is more dark humour and mystery. Both should be watched in sequence to get the most out of them, but I will say the Psychoville Hallowe'en special stands out on its own as a series of short stories with twists - I watched it today, and I can almost see the genesis of No 9 in there! For anthologies, I'd suggest Black Mirror, although I haven't seen the most recent series. The first ones were great, but very bleak indeed, so just a heads up there.
i loved ur take on each episode and i’m glad someone else appreciated Private viewing like i did☺️ The league references were a great addition& I’m happy to have found someone on youtube who has similar interests to me! i look forward to part 2
I've spent quite a while looking at other people's analysis and hearing them talk about their favourite episodes, and I think Private View is massively underrated. Good killings! Glad the League references were appreciated (I was starting to worry I'd overdone it!)
WeeLin I love good gore show. It might be consider mindless but I enjoy good way person depending on that personality. Also the fact most think gore cannot be scary is dumb. Also love good horror/comedy you guys should watch zombieland trust me it’s really good!
On a rewatch, Sardines really reminded me of Festen. From the family gathering that culminates in a revelation of incestual abuse, to the way one of the siblings (who is also implied to have suffered the abuse) isn't present, a sister. In Festen, it's Christian's twin sister Linda, and in Sardines it's the sister who 'couldn't make it' -- although the way Rebecca talks about her to the old woman makes it seem as though perhaps she died, and the old woman just didnt know.
I think the devil of Christmas was one of the most disturbing episodes. I was completely shocked, I didn’t not expect it. Thinking that many“movies” like that would have been made and that there are other actors and staff who willingly (or maybe unwillingly) help to create the movies. Sardines was the most disturbing for me, being the first episode I watched I didn’t expect that darkness. I really agree with everything you said and a great analysis!!
Don't know if you've already seen part 2, but The Devil of Christmas really shocked me too. It's one of their darkest twists, it feels like it comes out of nowhere, and it opens up a new horrible reality based around existing urban myths. My first thought when I rewatched it was "Oh my god... there's a child in this!" It's an episode that gets more and more disturbing the longer you think about it. Sardines was a great opener, I thought, and I remember having a chat window open with my sister the first time I saw it. It started with lots of laughing ("Why are all these posh people playing Sardines? lol!"), then went quiet, then finished on "Well... that took a disturbing turn!" I wasn't quite ready for how dark it was, even though I'd seen their other creations. The line "teaching the boy how to wash himself" really gave me the chills.
Well done! Great analysis, and I love all the inside League references. Can't wait for the next video (and if #1 is not The Devil of Christmas, I will be SHOCKED). You know your stuff, and can communicate well. Subscribed! Glad to have found your channel.
Greetings leaguers, niners and psychos of UA-cam! It looks like I’m approaching the 1k subscriber mark, so I thought we’d have ourselves a little Q&A. Post your questions as a reply, and I’ll try to answer as many as possible in a future video. Cheers - Lindsay x
Something I noticed about the final two episodes of Series 3 both tell stories of how people could lose their minds through grief, though in different ways.
Ooh, that's so true! One in a personal, very realistic way, and the other in an OTT murder spree. Both have lost their minds, with one clinging to a shoe and the other staging an elaborate organ repossession stunt, but they're both motivated and consumed by the same emotions, and dealing with the loss of a child. The episodes are so stylistically different, you wouldn't think they'd have that much in common.
Brilliant video with brilliant analysis - loved it! Inside No 9 is utterly wonderful & an absolute gem of our time. Reece & Steve are so beyond lovely too; the times I’ve met them will stay with me forever!
WeeLin I’m sure you will! They do lots of events here and there so you’ll have lots of opportunities. I don’t know if you’re around the London area but they’ll most likely do a No 9 Series 5 event at the BFI next year which would be great to go to! Oo also, on the topic of Reece & Steve, they’re on Gogglebox on Friday on Channel 4 at 9pm in case you’re interested! :)
@@emiliarobson Cheers! I'm not a Gogglebox fan, but those two could read the phonebook and it'd be solid gold. Ooh, if they do a thing at the BFI that'd be amazing! I saw Mark Gatiss there doing the Q&A for Horror Europa, which was incredible. I know they sometimes do cinema events as well (is it the Phoenix usually?), but I've never been able to get there. Fingers crossed, I can get to the next thing! Thanks for the info :)
WeeLin exactly hahah! All the BFI events are brilliant, I saw the League there last year too which was amazing! Yeah, Reece & Steve sometimes do events at the Phoenix like the one they did earlier this year which are always good to go to if you can. I’ve got my fingers crossed for you! And no worries at all :)
Thank you for putting this up, you earned yourself a new sub! This show is criminally underrated. I’ve never met anyone who has watched that doesn’t rave about it. There’s literally no bad episodes. I believe pound for pound it is better than Black Mirror as the last few seasons of Black Mirror have been extremely weak.
Thanks for the sub! I find it maddening that there are so many Black Mirror analysis videos out there and barely anything for Inside No 9. Don't get me wrong - I'm a fan of Charlie Brooker's work and I think there are still more good/excellent Black Mirror episodes than bad ones, but we're now five series in and I've still not seen a "bad" No 9. It deserves so much more credit than it gets. I honestly didn't think many people would watch this video (I had maybe like a hundred or so subs at the time), but the response has been amazing. It's so great to see there are other No 9 fans out there!
WeeLin That’s awesome that you found your niche with this series. Yeah, there are so many closet Inside no.9 fans out there. Like I said, I’ve never met anyone who’s watched it but didn’t like it. I love Black Mirror, but the last two seasons have been really wonting. This last season with Miley Cyrus and a few of the others were just not even in the same vein as older Black Mirror episodes like “Be Right Back“ or “White Christmas“ or “Shut Up and Drive“ etc. etc. Plus In9 works on a shoestring budget compared to what Netflix gives Brooker and crew. I remember the first time I saw “12 Days of Christine“ and my jaw hit the floor. That is still difficult to go back and watch.
You know the hare statue that appears in every episode somewhere? Well does anyone think series 4 episode 6 suggests that main characters in each episode have come into contact with that hare hence what happens in each episode?
I love that idea. The hare statue might be an ill omen, or a source of bad luck by its presence alone. Maybe some characters even made a wish on it that went badly wrong for them!
@@WeeLin There's the saying Mad as a March Hare too. Hares are generally regarded as a bit more mysterious, wild, independent, individual, than rabbits. Qualities like the show itself.
I love everything about the series and I genuinely think Sardines is the most unsettling piece of media in any genre or medium- for my mind at least- that I've ever seen (that's meant as a firm compliment- it was clearly meant to invoke discomfort), gone are the days where that applied to the head from art attack. Timothy West used to read a lot of audiobooks I listened to when I was young...which I definitely don't think helps
I'm so glad another UA-cam has made content on this show! I was really disappointed to see not many others have covered it, I'd love to see your opinions on the episode Private View!
I know I talked about it a bit in this video, but I didn't really give my personal opinion. Here it is - on the whole, I love it. I love the gruesome murder spree, the killer's motive and backstory and thought Fiona Shaw was incredible. The flip from doddery dinner lady to crazed killer was absolutely brilliant. Loved the humour too, Carrie in particular. The only let down for me was the ending, as it felt like a twist for the sake of a twist. I heard a great suggestion that it should have been Jean at the end holding the exhibition, only well-groomed and dressed and putting on a posh accent. Still wouldn't explain why nobody investigated all those people that went missing, but it makes more sense than the mild mannered lecturer suddenly overpowering the killer and managing to cut her heart out before disposing of the remains. That's quite a lot to do off the cuff! Didn't spoil the episode for me though - it felt like a great idea for a black comedy/slasher film but compressed into half an hour with all the fat cut off. Maybe a bit gruesome for some tastes, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.
@@WeeLin definitely! I still loved the episode but I agree it seemed like a twist as they maybe didn't think other endings had the same inside number 9 twist or sit in silence as the credit still moment
4 years later and I'm forever grateful to hear someone other than my boyfriend talk about inside no.9 🤣 I'm giving your old videos a rewatch to get my fix in-between new season 9 episodes
The 12 Days of Christine made me cry at the end. The episodes that was weird to me or made me feel weird was Seance Time, A Quiet Night in, Cold Call and the episode (can’t remember the name of it) where a girl goes to look after someone called Andras.
Rewatching this after this week's episode - I wonder if it would win a place on a revised list or a second installment. Personally I think I'm biased bc I love the genre it veered into so much so I spent the entirety of the twist pointing at the screen like that one picture of Leonardo DiCaprio from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and going "AHHHHHH" - I think I was excited they even went there rather than disturbed lol
Ha! That DiCaprio meme works perfectly for a good No 9 twist reaction! As for this week's episode, it would absolutely have earned a place here if it had been in the first four series. Maybe I'll revise this list or make a whole new one once the series has wrapped. If there are nine episodes more disturbing than Mr King, I'll be shocked!
Spoilers for Private View It’s funny because when I saw Private View it really reminded me of Saw and Se7en. Just like the Jigsaw killer Jean elaborately plans out the victims’ death trap and wants to teach them a lesson. Like John Doe she’s punishing them for their sins. All three make sure that the death relate to the crime and all believe this is a moral thing to do: they’re not amoral serial killers who just want a thrill.
Some of the best killers in fiction work to their own logic and moral code, determined that their own brand of punishment is the only thing that fits the crime. I love how Jean's became extra twisted, just to fit her own narrative (the "heartless critic" comment, for example). And yes, I was definitely getting a Se7en vibe with the killings on my first watch!
@@WeeLin That is true about Jean! Tbh it's the same thing with Jigsaw who decided to punish a guy because he skipped a day off work. However, even though we don't know exactly how 'heartless' this critic is the ending reveals a bit about this trait: instead of telling the police about the brutal murders he decides to profit from the horrific event.
I binged this series in 2 days and was hooked. I guessed a couple of the twists (the panel choosing best actress winner I guessed Jackie was the actress) but they're so good even ones I kinda guess still have me hooked. Great video btw! X
This is a fantastic breakdown. It's a fantastic show and I can't help but re watch so many episodes, and this video has made me want to go back and re- rewatch. Great stuff!
It's one of the most re-watchable shows ever. And I'm glad that my video made you want to go back and watch it again! You're bound to notice something new - I always do, and I've lost count of how many times I've seen these.
Inside number 9 is just brilliant. The writing is so clever Ive always been a fan of the writers and loved the league of gentlemen as a teenager but this is more grown up and matured and is exquisite
Me too - in our teens, my sister and I were massive League of Gentlemen fans (and still are!) and are now obsessed with No 9. The writing has definitely matured, and it's been a great experience growing up with their work.
Belated comment- just noticed you mentioned series 3 of League of Gentlemen- my favourite series! Love the converging stories and focus on Pauline, Geoff and Charlie
I did mention it, yeah! Series 2 was probably my favourite, but even the weakest sketches of League of Gentlemen are still better than most things on telly. My favourite part of series 3 was probably Papa Lazarou in the charity shop recreating scenes from The Exorcist. Fair play to the League for trying something new, even if it wasn't popular. If I remember right, there was a feature on the DVD where you could mix up the end sequences so they didn't make sense anymore!
New subscriber who has been binge watching all your videos! Would LOVE for you to do an update on this now the series has finished! As well as any other rankings (e.g. your favourites)
sardines shouldn't have ended with the hint of a fire being set, they should have locked the wardrobe and that's how it's ended. That's way more chilling then them being set on fire
Personally, I did like the implication of setting the wardrobe on fire, but now that I think about it... wouldn't it have been even worse if he'd just kept them all locked in there? And the more I think about that, the worse it gets. I didn't think this episode could get much more disturbing, but there you go!
It took me so long to find this series to watch, as I live in Brazil, but after I did I binge watched it all in just a couple of days. Inside No. 9 is an absolute gem of television.
I honestly think it's one of the best shows in the world right now. And they're about to start filming series 6! It's always so cool to know my videos are being watched around the world - hello Brazil!
Thanks - I never expected this video would be popular at all! I just made it because I was obsessed with the show and I didn't see many people on UA-cam talking about it. Watching No 9 grow in popularity (and with it, my little channel) has been incredible, and I'm glad so many people are into it now.
@@jsclaim2game74 Funny you should mention that here, on my disturbing episodes video! 🦉 Hopefully recording it this evening and it'll be up once I've edited. Turns out I had a lot of notes for this one!
My uncle who has worked with both writers of the show (points to anyone who can identify him ha), mentioned a) how these two are some of the best writers in the UK, and b) how they were working on a new dark comedy for the BBC over a decade ago. Inside No. 9 is one of the best things on British TV, even if Unc isn't in it! A bit of trivia is a hare appears in every single episode.
Definitely two of the best writers around today, and I'd imagine anyone who's worked with them would agree. Your uncle's a lucky guy! As for the other dark comedy from a decade ago, that wouldn't happen to be Psychoville, would it? I think I mention the hare in part 2, as there's an episode that has two hidden hares instead of one.
i'm guessing your uncle would be roy chubby brown (born royston vasey, who the gentlemen named the show's main town of hadfield and alston after. he also played the mayor of the town). am i correct?
@@dylvasey damn well hope so. in my twenties, but i was raised on flowery twats, monty python, blackadder, father ted etc. then i discovered the league of gentlemen. my father actually told me, when it was doing re-runs in about 02, that the mayor of the town was a comedian whose name was used for the name of the town. never seen anything as dark as this. my dad couldn't watch it when he first watched, as edward and tubbs creeped him out so much. unfortunately i'm quite ignorant in regards to your uncle's stuff, but have watched a fair bit. Orville the duck is what i remember strongly.
This video is great!! I’m a huge fan of the show and it’s clear this video is made by a massive fan, each episode is described and explained in depth, great to watch and even taught me a couple things about a few episodes, great work!!
I spent a few minutes thinking of how you were installing bugs and hidden cameras in your friends house FBI or MI6 style in order to watch it before I figured out that's not what you meant.
gah, i keep coming back to watch this video. Still to spooked to watch riddle of the sphynx. 100% Devil Of Christmas is the most terrifying to me. the first time i watched it was with my mum and i genuinely had to pause it to calm down as i realised and god i was *scared* by it.
Don't worry - lots of people were freaked out by The Devil of Christmas. I even know some people who stopped watching Inside No 9 because it scared them so bad. Riddle of the Sphinx is my own most disturbing episode, but at the same time I think it's absolutely brilliant.
i loved private view because i’m a huge christie fan- it was right up my alley. still a little bit confused by the ending; i see what they were going for but i was more confused than shocked which took away from the twist imo
Yeah, the ending doesn't quite work, does it? When you listen to Steve and Reece's commentary track, you get the feeling they realise now that it didn't make sense. Otherwise, brilliant episode.
I was a bit confused by the ending of Private View. Didn't the mother remove the heart at the end, thereby killing him. And yet he's alive in the final scene.
I believe she was going to kill him and remove his heart, but he managed to slip his restraints at the last second. Then (presumably) he overpowered her, killed her, cut out her heart and stuck it in a jar, then proceeded to take credit for the art exhibition. Seemed a bit far-fetched to me!
Your analysis of The Babadook made me realize that not all good content creators have a sub count higher than 1K . I haven't watched anything else you have talked about on the channel so that is why I haven't watched those yet .
Well, you've subscribed now, so that's me one closer to 1K! Sorry most of my videos contain spoilers (I'm always careful to warn people, even if it's a film older than me), but every film or TV show I talk about is something that got me thinking afterwards, and they all come highly recommended. Anyway, thanks for the sub and the feedback, and I'll hopefully see you back here soon.
That would be great. I need more films like that in my life, and I'm always looking for new video topics. I saw that you mentioned Black Swan - I've not seen that since its release, but it seriously messed up my head afterwards. Very intense.
Most episodes of inside no.9 didn't really disturb me except for Seance time, Tom & Jerri and without a doubt the harrowing. That ending might've traumatized me lol
It's different things that disturb different people , so I tried to take that into account while making this list. Disturbing content (for me) can be scares, like in Seance Time, or uncomfortable thoughts and ideas, like in Sardines. This list was very much shaped by my own opinions, but I do like hearing how other people are affected differently by the same episodes.
Oh, not at all! In fact, I thought this was going to be a niche topic that got zero views, but now Inside No 9 videos are the most popular ones on my channel. Turns out there are a lot more fans out there than I thought!
@@WeeLin i'm curious as to whether you have tried writing an inside-no-9-esque short story. because the show is so analysable, i feel driven, at times, to see if i could imitate their style. again, i wonder if i'm the only one who does this.
@@blueTwl I think that a lot of short stories in general follow this format - minimal cast, single setting, and seeding clues towards a twist that is revealed right at the end. I've tried it, and it is really hard to pull off. I'd say the two main things are to think of a scenario that's maybe slightly unusual but still relatable, then think of a secret that one of the characters might have. I know Steve and Reece look for odd things in everyday life for their characters and stories, and the simplest ideas are often the best (e.g. "where did that shoe come from?") That, or any quirky interests or hobbies, like Steve's crosswords in "Riddle of the Sphinx", or Reece's fondness for magic tricks in "Misdirection". Short stories can be fun and really rewarding to write - by all means, give it a bash, see what you come up with!
Rewatched that one last night, I didn't think of it too much when recommending episodes to a friend but I thought 'everyone goes on about it so I'll stick it on'. By jesus it hit me emotionally, I wasn't expecting that
My favourite TV show. So strange - because the things I like most are bizarre dark comedy and huge plot twists - TLoG Gang and Inside Number 9 crew fill those niches perfectly
I remember seeing League of Gentlemen for the first time and hardly believing something like that could be made. It fuelled a need for bizarre dark comedy I didn't even know I needed in my life!
I love Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room, and it's made me cry more than once. While I enjoyed the best actress episode (And the Winner Is), I know a lot of people didn't. It's one of the lowest rated, along with Last Gasp from series 1. Maybe I should review the "worst" IN9 episodes, and see if I can figure out what works and what doesn't?
@@WeeLin that sounds great. i watched all of your videos, except dead line. a can't find it anywhere. you speak with a real understanding of filmmaking and storytelling, and it's really interesting hearing your ideas and opinions. i personally really liked last gasp. i was going out with friends later that evening, and when i arrived, i had to explain i'd totally been blown away by an episode about a balloon filled with air.
Sardines is actually my favourite episode. It's just sheer perfection. The fact that they achieved perfection with the first ever episode proves what geniuses they are. A brilliant cast and a fantastic range of characters. " Well seeded."
I have to say I ran screaming from the room at the end of Private View. My husband had a heart bypass years ago and you never know how far the guys will push boundaries with this show, so I bolted as soon as I realised what was going on. I was reassured and we rewound it so I could see it play out and I'm glad I did. These reviews are fab by the way, and I did a little squeal when I saw Repo! pop up! Love love love that film, and Terrance Zdunich! Love the little League references too 🤘🏻😃
Wow, that would have freaked me out too! And that episode came out after Riddle of the Sphinx and Devil of Christmas, so you know they'll sometimes take things to the extreme. It's different when it's relatable too - I remember talking to another fan who was really disturbed by the episode Diddle Diddle Dumpling (she was a mother of twins, so I can't even imagine what that was like to watch). I love Repo, and it's been great to see that it has more fans out there. To this day, "Zydrate Anatomy" will sometimes pop randomly into my brain. And that's no bad thing at all!
If you ran screaming from the room in reaction to that, maybe you need to seek some sort of counselling. Because that sounds like an extreme reaction. I hope you’re better now.
That one really took me by surprise when I first watched it. I'm not joking when I say I had to pause the episode and take a moment to gather my thoughts.
@@WeeLin ikr it really caught me off guard especially the woman who killed her selfs son coming to kill Steve not only that the fact Reece had been doing that disturbing fake suicide call over and over not only that if Reece didn’t call Steve he wouldn’t of got angry at the cat woman and the son wouldn’t of killed him it’s pretty disturbing. (Sorry for the Long and late response) I appreciate your response keep up the vids they are amazing
I think the idea is that Reece's character slipped the restraints, killed Jean in self defence, cut her heart out and stuck it in a jar, hid the body (along with all the other bodies), then passed the exhibition off as his own. And somehow got away with it! Like I said, I loved the episode but the last scene didn't quite work. If you listen to the writers' commentary for the episode, you can tell they weren't too happy with the ending either.
Probably not most disturbing But so far my favorite is from season 1, episode 2, A Quiet Night In Brilliant, no dialogue, 💕 Next, I think disturbing and very good Season 5, episode 2 Death Be Not Proud
@@WeeLin it was brilliant, that and a quiet night in are my favourite so far, also the one with the woman who dates the fireman is actually pretty cleverly done!
I didn’t quite understand the final shot of private view when Reece’s character is interviews at the gallery. Can someone please clarify what it was suppose to be?
After we see Reece's hands starting to slip through his bonds, we're meant to assume that he attacked Fiona Shaw's character, killed her, then cut her heart out and stuck it in a jar to complete the exhibition and passed it off as his own (apparently he also disposed of the bodies, and nobody came looking for the missing people at the gallery). When you hear Steve and Reece on the commentary track, you can tell they're thinking it doesn't make much sense either. To me, it felt like a last minute decision - another twist for the sake of having another twist. Great episode otherwise.
@@DCSMedia I still love Private View too - it's a really strong and grisly premise and having Jean as the villain was a great twist. To me, the scene where she's preparing to extract the heart is the real ending, and I just kind of ignore the final scene. I get it though, endings can be hard to write if you don't have them in mind from the start!
@@WeeLin I gotta agree with that. I also think it’s one of the nicest looking number 9 episodes. The red light that bathes the sets, the quirky costumes and the traps and horror scenes give it a very distinct visual style
There is another show I think you would like it is called out of the unknown and it is from the 60s. It is a scifi/ horror addapting stories from famous and not so famous authors
While not the most disturbing, but the most shocking episode in my opinion is the live Halloween special, the twist that nothing went wrong after all, and the re-run of a quiet night in wasn’t actually a re-run, it was the episode.
Dead Line had a great twist, didn't it? I'm planning to do another video just on that one episode.
That one was crap
I watched that one drunk alone at home and that was soo trippy

SERIES 5 IS COMING EARLY NEXT YEAR WHEYYY
Emilia Robson yay 😁
British people know how terrify me. Also the fact that know how make good twists make me more happy!
Shadow Force can’t wait! Agreed, we British are good at terrifying people. 😂 And Reece & Steve’s twists are incredible, I’ve never watched a programme with more unpredictable and amazing plots!
Emilia Robson I love horror this show has it. Most shows are predictable not inside number 9.
Shadow Force me too & agreed.
Emilia Robson holycrap I’ve seen all the episodes! I loved it! 12 days of Christine made me cry. I loved cheese and crackers that made me cry too. I love it. Also have you seen the Halloween special?
Number nine I just can’t get enough of it is so unique
There's just nothing else like it at all. Even other anthology shows don't feel quite so unique as this.
cold caller was a good one the ending caught me off guard a bit
I was in shock, genuine jaw wide open shock. I’ve never been caught that off guard by a episode ever before
My favorite episode!
cold caller?
I just finished it and it was so gooood

That one episode of the suicide helpline and Chloe...........killed me I COULDN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT IT!!

The UA-cam algorithm has actually suggested something good for once. Subbed.
Praise be to the algorithm! We shall not speak ill of it, lest it becomes displeased.
Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith are absolute geniuses
Didn’t realise that until you pointed it out
The reporter: Do you put your heart into it?
The professor: Well, not quite.
Much as I wasn't a fan of the ending, that was still a very good line!
That show was cursed and the spirits has been released to take over the studio
The haunted TV studio was a great idea, first in Seance Time and then taken to the extreme in Dead Line.
Playing the long game... now that's genius! Didn't even think of that. Every line in Sardines is solid gold.
Really good video. I think 'Dead Line' would be my pick. I totally bought that it had all gone wrong so when A Quiet Night In malfunctioned and the ghosts invaded, I was genuinely terrified to the core. It might be the most scared I've been since I was a child.
I ended up giving Dead Line its own video. I really wish I'd seen it live at the time, but it's still creepy to watch it now.
hjfleeds I wish it was on netflix :(
I’m surprised you didn’t mention that the hare statue is hidden somewhere in each episode , it’s such a brilliant series and it sometimes leaves you cold x
Aww, that's nice! I always cry at this one, and Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room, and by this point I don't even care who knows it!
That episode left me in awe and made me feel a bit emotional.
@@WeeLin I suspect as much! Thank you for discussing this show -you make some excellent observations!
And well done to you too, for getting through it, and making sure that person was okay.
one of the best shows i've ever seen.
idk why but seance time really fucked me up the first time I saw it. There was something about him talking to the blue demon that really shook me up. great vid
It was him talking in the little boy's voice that I found creepy, especially when you know what happened to the kid. For an episode that started with comedy and breaking tension, it does end up being genuinely scary.
This episode prompted me to have the most vivid nightmare of my life - very brief, thankfully - but so real ! Thanks Steve, Reece. Blinder !
Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room is my favourite. It's so simple, yet so powerful. Genuinely had my mouth open at the twist
Beautiful, poignant episode and one of my personal favourites.
@@Dan_Ben_Michael No official release date as of yet, but Steve Pemberton said on Twitter that it would probably be early next year.
@WeeLin No wonder I couldn’t find anything. Btw do you have any programs of a similar genre that you would recommend me to watch?
Just subscribed!! Finally someone who watch inside no.9 ! For me this show is way better than Black Mirror and I absolutely love this show!
i loved ur take on each episode and i’m glad someone else appreciated Private viewing like i did☺️ The league references were a great addition& I’m happy to have found someone on youtube who has similar interests to me! i look forward to part 2
I've spent quite a while looking at other people's analysis and hearing them talk about their favourite episodes, and I think Private View is massively underrated. Good killings! Glad the League references were appreciated (I was starting to worry I'd overdone it!)
WeeLin i agree! and trust me, u could never overdo the league references haha x
Thanks so much! Was starting to think I'd overdone it with the League references, but I just can't help myself.

So jealous! I've never met them, but hope to someday. They seem like lovely people.
WeeLin
That’s awesome that you found your niche with this series.
"if human organ repossession holds some ghoulish appeal to you and you're a fan of musicals"
Me: SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY
Definitely check out Repo! It might be a hard sell for some, but if that sounds good then you might just love it.
@@WeeLin I listened to the soundtrack and I am 100% sold
None of these would have made my top 9. But I i love your insights into each episode and I loved the shout out to Repo, The Genetic Opera!
It's be a different list now that we've had a lot more No 9 since, but always nice to know another person saw Repo!

It’s funny because when I saw Private View it really reminded me of Saw and Se7en.
@@katkit1479 So in other words... Jean was right about him all along? That's pretty clever actually!
I binged this series in 2 days and was hooked. I guessed a couple of the twists (the panel choosing best actress winner I guessed Jackie was the actress) but they're so good even ones I kinda guess still have me hooked. Great video btw! X
Thanks! They're so good that they're worth watching again, even when you know the twists. The way they build up to them is nothing short of genius!
@@WeeLin It did, I very much look forward to your part 2

I love your coverage! Wish we could get Inside no 9 in the states!
I think some people from the US said they managed to watch it - was it on Hulu/BritBox? Definitely worth a watch if you can find it.
Love this show, I think "A Quiet Night In" has to be my favorite. Love them all though!! What they did with the live show was brilliant.
cold comfort left me with a horrid sinking feeling for hours
I had to pause it in the middle because I felt so awful after the first "Chloe call".
Idk I feel as tho the just locking the door would give me a sense of hope the gasoline makes me feel like they're definitely gonna die but slowly
Private view was ruined for me too with that ending. It completely confused me and took away from the episode
There's a commentary track for the episode by Steve and Reece. I got the feeling they weren't happy with it either.
I liked Private View.
I liked the ending.

12 days of Christine is your favourite? I can understand that. It's perhaps one of my favourite episodes with such amazing foreshadowing.
The ending still makes me cry every time.
@@WeeLin yes! It's rather emotional.
I didn't like that one
@@nathaliegrieves3859 it's a representation of life and death.
How do you not like it?
@@ThatPancakeCat Just found it sad that's all. Especially at the end
@@WeeLin i'd imagine they are talking about psychoville.
i loved the hitchcock-esque episode where they have the body in the trunk.

in my twenties, but i was raised on flowery twats, monty python, blackadder, father ted etc.
then i discovered the league of gentlemen. my father actually told me, when it was doing re-runs in about 02, that the mayor of the town was a comedian whose name was used for the name of the town.
never seen anything as dark as this. my dad couldn't watch it when he first watched, as edward and tubbs creeped him out so much.
unfortunately i'm quite ignorant in regards to your uncle's stuff, but have watched a fair bit. Orville the duck is what i remember strongly.
This video is great!! I’m a huge fan of the show and it’s clear this video is made by a massive fan, each episode is described and explained in depth, great to watch and even taught me a couple things about a few episodes, great work!!
Not joking when I’m saying that I’m bugging my friend to watch this show.
Go for it! Is there an episode you think might personally hook them? I'd start with that.
I spent a few minutes thinking of how you were installing bugs and hidden cameras in your friends house FBI or MI6 style in order to watch it before I figured out that's not what you meant.
12 days of Christine still makes me choke up everytime I watch, an absolute masterpiece.
gah, i keep coming back to watch this video.
Seemed a bit far-fetched to me!
i just binged all of seasons 1 -4 just to watch these vids lmao
Wow, I'm flattered! But to be fair, it is very binge-able.
@@WeeLin it was very worth it!
“The nine most disturbing episodes of Inside No 9”, yes. That was a game-changer.
The Babadook was the first time a film got me thinking , I will tell you if I find films like that that you haven't talked about .
Thank you, it is a great behind the scene look
Love it too! Nice to see someone else's opinions on it!
Thanks! As soon as I watched it, I went on UA-cam to hear what other people thought of the show. There weren't that many videos, so I made my own.
i'm glad i'm not only one obsessed with this show
Oh, not at all!
‘12 days of Christine’ is still by far best episode of all time....
Rewatched that one last night, I didn't think of it too much when recommending episodes to a friend but I thought 'everyone goes on about it so I'll stick it on'. By jesus it hit me emotionally, I wasn't expecting that
I gotta watch that 1st 1 again. For some reason. I thought the lady went in the chest 1st.
She thinks she's going in first when she opens the doors, but the other guy is already standing there. Very easy detail to miss the first time around.
This is just a more mature goosebumps and probably better

that was the episode that got me to tears.
there is only one episode i don't care for, and that's the voting for a best ctress award.
@@WeeLin that sounds great.
i watched all of your videos, except dead line. a can't find it anywhere.

i personally really liked last gasp. i was going out with friends later that evening, and when i arrived, i had to explain i'd totally been blown away by an episode about a balloon filled with air.
I still think about the end of 'Sardines' about once a week
Sardines is actually my favourite episode. It's just sheer perfection. The fact that they achieved perfection with the first ever episode proves what geniuses they are. A brilliant cast and a fantastic range of characters. " Well seeded."

@@WeeLin I just did!
For me it’s cold comfort that disturbed me the most
That one really took me by surprise when I first watched it.

What exactly happened in the private view ending
I think the idea is that Reece's character slipped the restraints, killed Jean in self defence, cut her heart out and stuck it in a jar, hid the body (along with all the other bodies), then passed the exhibition off as his own. And somehow got away with it! Like I said, I loved the episode but the last scene didn't quite work.
@@WeeLin ahh right. Cheers for letting me know. It just seemed quite out of the blue. I do really like Private View though.
