I’m considering buying one to have on hand. I for one want the blade brake clutch as I have to deal with a lot of leaves in the fall and spring. It’s becoming tedious to have to restart my current mower after each bag empty. Also, my current mower is heavy (100lbs) and self propelled, though there are times where it doesn’t help. I’m going to start getting my oldest started mowing the lawn soon and I’m sure the nexite deck Hondas are much lighter and would be easier for him to use.
EXCELLENT VIDEO! I OWN a HRR mower. I agree, the less bells & whistles, the better, less to break down. That oil was awful. When I store mine, I change oil & pull the plug & pour a tablespoon of oil down cylinder. I bought a air filter, new plug, & blade after buying new 3yrs ago in which I am installing I ALSO coat the bottom of mower deck with Fluid Film. Not only does it keep rust down, it keeps grass from sticking. I change oil during the season. Oil is the heartbeat if ANY engine.😉👍
I just changed the oil in a mower I got last season, it is from 2007, and I don't think the oil had ever been changed. Surprisingly, it wasn't low, but it was very thick and black. Almost like tar. I had to run the mower for about 10 minutes to get the oil thin enough to drain out. I put new oil in it, and surprisingly it still starts on the first pull, and runs fine without smoking (too much). The oil I put in it is black again after running it about 30 minutes, so I am going to have to change it again pretty soon, and possibly even a third time until the oil stays clean. I would love to see a new engine last that long of constant use with it's original oil and still run like a new machine.
Unsuprisngly for someone like me even though maintenance on a piece of equipment is a big factor in what I buy extra goodies that make live easier are a must. My first mower that had a form of blade stop which was a Toto Turfmaster was awesome, being able to run the self propel while keeping the engine running is awesome. Of course the bigger the mowers get the more little goodies they have and at least in my opinion while they do add things to go wrong they often don't especially if preventative maintenance is taken.
nice, and to be honest, I had something like that too, with the older toro with the 2 stroke Suzuki. Using the self propel and not use the blade was very cool!
I have one like this that I bought in 2019. Starts on the first pull even right out of the box (Adding oil and gas of course) after all this time I have the problem of the rear drive axle wearing and getting loose. I took apart and shimmed them with a piece of an greased pop can. Going up and down the the hard ground here in West Virginia is rough on any mower!
I needed a good quality mower with infinitely adjustable drive speed, so the hydrostatic Honda was a natural choice. The blade clutch mechanism on newer models like yours is really robust and easy to work on; it's another story keeping the axle bushings (at the height adjusters) greased. That's about an hour job for me, and it gets done about every three years. Otherwise, the axle will corrode and become abrasive, killing the bushings and making it really difficult to pull the mower backward. But otherwise, yes, in my case, the bells and whistles of the premium Hondas are worth the extra money & maintenance.
Oh I love the blade clutch system. The biggest issue on the HRR is the bushings. It's not always rust though - these lack a dust seal on the wheel side of the self propelled system below the ratcheting gears. It's important to add one as that's why the HRX mowers do not have problems nearly as much as the HRRs.
I wanted a self propelled mower to help with my hilly yard. So my research lead me to the Honda HRR216VKA, and have been happy with it. The other day the rope was harder than usual to pull. I’ll look into the bearing and recoil situation. Thanks for this illustrative video.
I've mentioned here on a video before, but my job uses portable air compressors with Honda GX 390 engines. Very little care is given to them, started in sub zero Temps and straight to WOT, and zero oil changes. It just gets added when needed. They run for 8 hours a day or more for many years. Hard to believe they do.
Great mower. Shame it wasn't maintained well. Mine is 10 years + and it still starts on the first pull every year. I tease my neighbor across the street who doesn't maintain his Husqvarna and ended up just paying people to cut his grass. LOL
That mower definitely has a bent crankshaft. That clank is a sign of that. To me, Honda mowers are amazing, but the HRR was a bit of a “swing and a miss.” It has a rock solid engine, but the deck and drivetrain is not the greatest. The HRX is definitely expensive, but it is rock solid.
Really like my HRX. I change oil twice a year, about 25 hours on the oil. Only issue I've had is like you showed on the drive ratchet mechanism. Took it apart cleaned and lubed and good as new. I've heard from another channel that mowing wet grass with these Hondas will clog up the drive system literally locking it up. She said its a 3+ hour tear down for that clean up and re-assembly. I WILL NOT mow wet grass.
yes mowing yet grass is never a good idea. But know that it is wet means you can still mow it, but you can try and let the mower dry up before putting it up.
I have a 1983 Honda self propelled lawnmower that has been used every summer since new. It still starts and runs like it was new. Still has the same exhaust, recoil cord and wheels. It even still has the original air filter that gets blown out and cleaned yearly. . The only work that mower has needed was a carb overhaul after the first 35 years. Once that was done it runs like new. It is now the mower out at my place on the lake and mows 1/2 acre weekly.
Thanks ! That mower may be ten years old but those tires are like new. I'd be surprised it they had 20 hours on that machine. Looks like it was rode hard and put away wet after hitting a yellow pole numerous times with the handle.... and hitting a buried pipe or root with the blade. As for the recoil assembly the price is under fifteen bucks at a shop.
@5:06, looks like the crankshaft may be slightly bent. Looking at blade at the beginning and the engine shimmy on the deck at the end, to me, seems to confirm this. Could be wrong. Did you notice that?
When buying a new mower or vehicle I prefer to get only what I want on said item. However now days they make things with a lot of crap on them so they can repair them later. Thanks for the videos.
I purchased a similar Honda with the mulch bag knob on right side. $75 starts runs fine the self propelled function pushes down a long ways before engagement. Cable Adjustment or belt. blades good I am going to clean it up and list it
bought a Troy-Bilt front drive self-propelled in 2010ish with Honda GCV160 motor for about $280.00. i recently noticed that these lawn mower prices have skyrocketed and that is when i decided to fix this one instead of buying another. never have changed the oil. recently put a new carb and air filter after it sat all last year. oil was low, so i filled it and plan on changing it in the next couple of weeks. so, that is 12years of use. it shares time with a lawn tractor. I expected it to break and it just hasn't. it is running great..no smoking or bad noises.
I have a Honda lawn mower that is about 45 yrs old and all I have had to do to it is Reg maintenance and a new spark plug a used coil and I had to replace the tires and I just changed the original blade it had a small hole on the deck but I was able to repair it oh I also had the carburetor cleaned for the first time ,it also has a blade clutch no issues so far touch wood lol so I can’t complain !! I love all my Hondas ,CRV civic snow blower and lawn mower bye 4 now
Can you believe I got my first self propelled mower LAST YEAR?? I think the cost of them kept me from buying them when I could just go by a cheap push mower. I decided to go to a pawn shop to look for a used Honda mower, and I found an HRR for $150. I snatched it up quickly. Runs quite well.
High end vs basic mower.... Depends. If the mower is my primary, I'll get a high quality mower. My current push mower is a Toro Recycler with Personal Pace. Before I recently moved, it was my primary mower, and I wanted mowing help from others in the household, so I got a good quality, self-propelled, easy to operate mower. Now I have WAY more grass to cut, and my primary is a zero turn. I also inherited two basic push mowers. I'll likely keep one of the basic mowers for trim work, and sell the others. I don't like a bunch of features, like a blade clutch. I DO like Toro's Personal Pace mowers, as they are very simple to operate. No controls. Just crank and go.
My mother had an MTD push mower for something like 15 years she didn't do anything to it, just added oil if it needed it, but never serviced anything. Eventually, she bought a new mower and let the old one sit for another 5 or so years. I asked if I could have the old MTD, she warned me it was junk but gave it to me anyway. I took it apart, changed the oil, fixed the wheels as they were sitting at a 45-degree angle lol, cleaned the underside, undercoated it, and cleaned the air filter. It runs like new now, I'll probably get 10 years out of it.
ive only used 2 different types of mowers, a regular push mower with no self propel and one where the mower propelled faster or slower depending on my waking speed. tbh i preffered the first one because the self propel system just added a bunch of unnecessary weight too it which made the push mower no more difficult
the propelled mower is a toro personal pace and ive never had any issues with it and weve had it for like close to if not over10 years. tbh i dont think any maintenance has ever been done too it other then maybe a carb clean and probably an oil change at some point.
Let me say: great video. I was wondering if you would be willing to put together a video on this same Honda model HRR2165VXA with the single handle rear wheel adjuster. These things inevitably fail. That particular video would likely save alot of owners, and eliminate a whole lot of grief. I just replaced this adjuster on my own HRR Friday 6/29/23. It was and is a time-consuming job. You may be able to spot a few shortcuts to save a do-it-yourselfer some time. Thanks.
The only dealings I've ever had with a blade clutch on a hand mower was on the dead Deere that I swa[pped the Kawasaki off of onto the Snapper and the blade clutch made a good blade adapter. and My answer is the same as yours as far as added complications. Basic is just fine with me. And as far a s no maintenance, Cheryl's old 89 Craftsman didn't have anything done to it till I came on the scene in 03 or 04. Now it had to have a new deck shell and the tranny laid down because I hadn't found out about the bentonite clay lube in the old Peerless trannys but now it smokes some but starts and runs just fine 11 horse Briggs flathead basic, no sleeve. 4/25/23 Hi there, Quick question about a project I have at hand, my Ariens lawn tractor. It has a Kohler Courage Single Cylinder OHV engine. It idles fine, but backfires when I shut it off. The owner's manual says the throttle has to be set in the fast (3/4) position, before the engine shuts off, to avoid backfiring. Clearly, it's well known that this engine has a backfiring issue, because they included it in the manual. You'd think idling before shut off would stop the backfire, as there would be a leaner mixture and less fuel to ignite in the muffler. Maybe I should've used a slower hand when throttling down? Maybe the fuel mix is too rich and unburned fuel somehow makes its way to the muffler and combusts? If the mixture is too rich, would that make it stall or choke out when going beyond half throttle? Something's improperly adjusted in the carburetor, but which screw/needle? Also, this mower has very few hours on it and is practically brand new! I've been using it for 8 or 9 months. Just sharpened the blades today and greased the front axle and wheel zerks. Hope to take the best possible care of my tractor, so it'll last a long life of good use. ah yes I've heard of this issue before. If it was mine, I would install a fuel shut off valve, and 2 minutes before I plan to stop mowing, I would reach over, and turn off the fuel. It can't backfire, if there's no fuel in the carb.
Any recommendations for a 1/4 inch fuel shut off valve? I heard a lot of them leak after a while. I'll likely buy a pack of them as to lower the average cost per unit and then I'll have a few spares. What about the engine choking out at above half throttle? It seems as between myself and my grandfather, everything is always broken. Also, I had a project weed eater branded trimmer. The carb has a leaking gasket and the pull cord snapped on me. It also needs carb work and other miscellaneous fixes. It ran when I directly primed the cylinder with fuel, so I know it has enough compression and a working ignition system. For a rookie like myself, I hate to give up on it, especially because the engine has very little wear, but I'm done fooling with it. Maybe on Father's day, lawn equipment will be on sale and I can get a cheaper brand new unit, since I can't find any good deals on used weed whackers on FB Marketplace in my area. Times have changed and people know that their equipment is worth more than it was a few years ago, so getting a bargain isn't possible. And even free stuff is elusive.
I've always purchased Honda mowers. I bought my first one in 1985. Unfortunately I left that one with my first wife. Since 1990, I've only purchased 4 Hondas. I gave one away, sold one and still have two. The two that I have still run like a top.
Lawn equipment is the most abused next to a car. People are fine not doing ANY maintenance on their equipment until it will not start. I had a Snapper self propelled mower that ran for 27 years before it finally gave out. I would rather own a Snapper over a Honda. They are good mower and quieter than most. I usually find the air filter completely full of dirt, even to the point the carburetor was drawing oil from the crank case trying to get air. I agree, the blade clutch system sucks.
The Honda mower is a good product. I've had mine 10 years and I just keep it clean, change the oil once a year and sharpen the blades. It still starts first pull. It does have its disadvantages. Firstly, I am a strong 98 kg guy, but it is simply way too heavy and too bulky to pick up and put in my boot. Secondly, the cheapest self-propelled Honda mower in Australia is $1,800. IF you can get one for $500 in USA, I think that is damn good value. I sure hope you end up changing that engine bearing in the one you just fixed. Maybe, I should import good used ones from USA and on sell them?
Had my Australian made Honda Buffalo Buck 20 years. Change oil every year and filters/spark plug as needed. It came with the Victa snorkel. Only parts I’ve replaced are wheel bearings and blades. I take care of it and should last another 20 years. Love Honda mowers!
Being (at least) somewhat mechanical minded, I really cannot understand why any adult with some life experience would pay upmarket prices for a high quality machine only to abuse it or fail to provide it the level of maintenance require to get the optimal performance and life out of it (i.e. getting their moneys worth). To me, that is not only a waste of money but an encouragement for the manufacturers to cheapen the quality of the product while maintaining or even increasing the high prices; if you fail to take care of your machine, it becomes more difficult to identify if a part failed from being made cheaply or from being abused. Also, I agree that if your paying a shop to service all of the addition features that most mowers don’t have more often, you could justify buying a cheaper machine, running it without an maintenance at all for 2-4 years, and just replacing it with another cheaper new machine every 2-4 years. I think I could argue that the expense either way would equal out to be about the same but probably slightly less by just replacing it; without the consumer feeling as though he’s dumping more money into the same old machine again? I would only be willing to pay up for a high quality machine IF I were planning to take care of it, service and repair it myself, and squeeze every drop of life out of it that’s possible! Personally, though, I generally don’t like owning machines or appliances that have harder to find, more expensive, or limited aftermarket parts availability. Doing my own work, I have made out extremely well running used equipment (sometimes even building one machine from the parts of two or more) so I rarely buy new, above middle-of-the-line machines and, even when I do, it is usually more about satisfying my own curiosity about experiencing the machine than expecting it to live a long life without additional costs or maintenance effort. For someone who has the ability and enjoys doing mechanical work, I think buying new, high end machines are largely unfulfilling. Most people in this situation would prefer bringing a used high end machine back from the dead, using it just long enough to get a feel for the user experience, then flipping it for a maximum profit and starting over again! I can only say that the machines I prefer to keep long term for my own person use are the machines that strike a nice balance between easy and enjoyable to use, powerful, dependable, affordable/easy to maintain and purchase replacement parts. Power equipment as a status symbol does not enter into the equation at all.

If I was going to buy a new Honda mower I would get an HRX that was self propelled and skip the blade block and self start features. I like the upgraded wheels. In Canada the top of the line with the HRX comes with Versamow, a plastic deck and an extra large bag. These are all features I don’t need. I had a brand new Toro once with front wheel drive and a Tecumseh engine that lasted for 18 years by applying meticulous maintenance and following the Owner’s Manual. The end came when the deck started to break.

Just to confuse issues I’ve gotten back my self propelled 21” Craftsman with a Honda GCV160 engine that’s been in storage over 2 years. This mower was my all time favorite with the WALK easy control feature. This machine was a pleasure to use and work on. I thought I could manage with a Troy Bilt push mower but no as still have mobility issues. So I’m trying to revive the Craftsman. It’s quite a mess and so I’m taking your approach of getting it just to turn over with a fresh small supply of gas. The previous operator told me it was put away still running and has been sitting with gas in it. Thanks for your comments and videos. I’ve been so pleased with the mowers I’ve bought and found out that with proper maintenance they can last up to 20 years!
I bought a well used cub cadet LT 1050 for 200.00. It ran great, but was owned by idiots at one time. It took me the first season to undo all the abuse and neglect, but's has been a pretty good machine since
my 20 year old Tecumseh Toro still starts with 1, 2 pulls max with nothing but a yearly oil change and plug. Dreading the day it dies, since nothing today inspires confidence aside from honda. probably going to pick one up and leave it in the box before they're gone. any need to do anything to it before storage, or just leave it factory packed?
We bought a very cheap mower for around 300 bucks, that is being used commercially and has been used so much that the ball bearing in the wheels literally disintegrated (easily over 1000h hours of use). Surprisingly I could buy wheels from the manufactorer for 30 bucks a pop and all issues were solved, (teeth on the inside of the wheel was worn out as well). Point is, modern mowers still last a long time, and ethanol was never an issue as well. The low amount of Ethanol that is in gasoline doesn't cause any issues if you use the equipment regularly and don't store em over the winter with it.
Sorry to say a 30 year old Yard Man mower would always started on the first pull. Usually had oil changes and the blade sharpened. Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you.
Yes a bought a honda with all the extras but i do look after my equipment. My old flymo QS5160HW lasted me 17 years until the gearbox failed but i can't get a new gearbox for it. If the honda lasts me 20 years it'll see me into my box.
Back in 2012, I was in a jam and needed a new mower quickly. Going to Home Depot, I couldn't make up my mind so, decided to go with the Honda basic self-propelled push mower, which cost a fortune. Since Honda is supposed to have good quality, I assumed this would be a best bet. This decision turned out to be a huge mistake, the mower has been substantially worse than any other mower I have owned since 1965. The problems seem to center around the design of the mower; I suspect the engineers were fresh out of school and had never used a lawn mower before. Since the mower cost a fortune, I had to make it last so, have modified it numerous times to make the mower actually usable. One of the biggest gripes remaining on the mower, is it's super low engine power which I estimate to be the equivalent to a standard single blade more having 1.5 to 2.0 horsepower. The engine quickly bogs down with grass that is 2" high, whereas my 1969 Lawn Boy mower cuts the same grass like a hot knife through butter (same 21" cut but, with a 109 cc engine, instead of 160 cc with the Honda). The Lawn Boy also weighs half as much as the Honda, making it much easier to maneuver.

I suspect the reason why Honda has achieved such a good reputation is, they probably have done a thorough study of what Americans perceive as quality, then incorporate those "window dressing" features.

Our old Mcculloch m56-190awfpx (equipped with Honda GCV190 engine) lasted 6 years without an oil change, then something broke inside the engine and it always revved to the max.
@@HomeGaragechannel the deck was bent and rusty, the carb leaked fuel (and I couldn't find an appropriate replacement) so I just gave it away to a scavenger. I bought a Husqvarna LC353 AWD (GCVX 170 engine) and the four wheel drive is a blessing.
Don't understand why people don't take care of their stuff. I can change the oil, plug, and air filter in about 10 minutes. At the end of the season, either run it dry, or run it with some Stabil. Will start right up in the Spring.
Hey i have a 3.5 hp brighs sxs.1481HH it was running really bad on run when i would accelerate it would try to die and most of the time it would die but on half chocke it would run perfect so i cleaned carb didnt work replaced it still didint work but the engine was ran 22 years without an air filter and it is pretty easy to pull do you think the engine is just worn out? And btw the engine is on banana bike.

you didn't mention what to do with the 1/4 cup, but I'm guessing you're supposed to put into a full tank of gasoline? No, I haven't and No I wouldn't try it.

I like Honda mowers very much. With minimal simple maintenance (air filter, and engine oil change, maybe a spark plug every 3-5 yrs), these things run forever. A simple water hose with the mower on its side at the end of every mowing season, would mitigate a lot of the issues seen with the underside of mower decks.
Basement issues? What they may be, if you please? I'd never buy a house without a basement, doubles the space, plus a place for all the mechanicals to reside, just sayin. I make it a habit to check the oil level on all my machines periodically, and change all the oil out of all the machines in late Sept. or early Oct. just before it gets cold, generator, 3 snowthrowers, lawnmower, best time of year, no bugs.
I don’t know how people abuse these motors when I have never ever ever had mine repaired never ever had a single issue I change my oil I do my maintenance on my spark plugs and things never had an issue with the roto stop Or the engine itself or the drivetrain 😂 I mean I’ve helped fix people‘s that were mostly carburetor issues because they didn’t run it enough
not rod knock, it's an upper bushing issue. Because it still works just fine. the answer to your question yes it can. Mine was abuse and sound terrible like this one, and it's been running that way for the last 8 years.
Variable speed yes, blade clutch no. Hondas are great little mowers, but over engineered. 10 years and no oil change or maintenance, give me a break. There is a difference between life getting in the way, and neglect.
Honda due to the lawsuit with the state of California, is phasing out it’s gas mower production in the U.S. What ever in inventory is what it is right now.
Do your research. A lot of younger people these days are lazy due to being spoiled rotten growing up. Everything needs maintenance regardless of quality.

It's not always rust though - these lack a dust seal on the wheel side of the self propelled system below the ratcheting gears. It's important to add one as that's why the HRX mowers do not have problems nearly as much as the HRRs.

I wanted a self propelled mower to help with my hilly yard. So my research lead me to the Honda HRR216VKA, and have been happy with it. The other day the rope was harder than usual to pull. I’ll look into the bearing and recoil situation. Thanks for this illustrative video.

One other thing to check is the blade brake. Make sure it completely disengages from the flywheel when the handle is pulled for start.

I've mentioned here on a video before, but my job uses portable air compressors with Honda GX 390 engines. Very little care is given to them, started in sub zero Temps and straight to WOT, and zero oil changes. It just gets added when needed.
They run for 8 hours a day or more for many years. Hard to believe they do.

That mower definitely has a bent crankshaft. That clank is a sign of that. To me, Honda mowers are amazing, but the HRR was a bit of a “swing and a miss.” It has a rock solid engine, but the deck and drivetrain is not the greatest. The HRX is definitely expensive, but it is rock solid.

Really like my HRX. I change oil twice a year, about 25 hours on the oil. Only issue I've had is like you showed on the drive ratchet mechanism. Took it apart cleaned and lubed and good as new. I've heard from another channel that mowing wet grass with these Hondas will clog up the drive system literally locking it up. She said its a 3+ hour tear down for that clean up and re-assembly. I WILL NOT mow wet grass.
yes mowing yet grass is never a good idea. But know that it is wet means you can still mow it, but you can try and let the mower dry up before putting it up.
I have a 1983 Honda self propelled lawnmower that has been used every summer since new. It still starts and runs like it was new. Still has the same exhaust, recoil cord and wheels. It even still has the original air filter that gets blown out and cleaned yearly. . The only work that mower has needed was a carb overhaul after the first 35 years. Once that was done it runs like new. It is now the mower out at my place on the lake and mows 1/2 acre weekly.

Thanks ! That mower may be ten years old but those tires are like new. I'd be surprised it they had 20 hours on that machine. Looks like it was rode hard and put away wet after hitting a yellow pole numerous times with the handle.... and hitting a buried pipe or root with the blade.
As for the recoil assembly the price is under fifteen bucks at a shop.

@5:06, looks like the crankshaft may be slightly bent. Looking at blade at the beginning and the engine shimmy on the deck at the end, to me, seems to confirm this. Could be wrong. Did you notice that?

I purchased a similar Honda with the mulch bag knob on right side. $75 starts runs fine the self propelled function pushes down a long ways before engagement. Cable Adjustment or belt. blades good I am going to clean it up and list it

I just got one of those, self propel was weak, and it would not roll backwards. I just oiled the axles and adjusted the cable and it runs good again.

bought a Troy-Bilt front drive self-propelled in 2010ish with Honda GCV160 motor for about $280.00. i recently noticed that these lawn mower prices have skyrocketed and that is when i decided to fix this one instead of buying another. never have changed the oil. recently put a new carb and air filter after it sat all last year. oil was low, so i filled it and plan on changing it in the next couple of weeks. so, that is 12years of use. it shares time with a lawn tractor. I expected it to break and it just hasn't. it is running great..no smoking or bad noises.

I have a Honda lawn mower that is about 45 yrs old and all I have had to do to it is Reg maintenance and a new spark plug a used coil and I had to replace the tires and I just changed the original blade it had a small hole on the deck but I was able to repair it oh I also had the carburetor cleaned for the first time ,it also has a blade clutch no issues so far touch wood lol so I can’t complain !! I love all my Hondas ,CRV civic snow blower and lawn mower bye 4 now

Can you believe I got my first self propelled mower LAST YEAR?? I think the cost of them kept me from buying them when I could just go by a cheap push mower. I decided to go to a pawn shop to look for a used Honda mower, and I found an HRR for $150. I snatched it up quickly. Runs quite well.

High end vs basic mower.... Depends. If the mower is my primary, I'll get a high quality mower. My current push mower is a Toro Recycler with Personal Pace. Before I recently moved, it was my primary mower, and I wanted mowing help from others in the household, so I got a good quality, self-propelled, easy to operate mower. Now I have WAY more grass to cut, and my primary is a zero turn. I also inherited two basic push mowers. I'll likely keep one of the basic mowers for trim work, and sell the others. I don't like a bunch of features, like a blade clutch. I DO like Toro's Personal Pace mowers, as they are very simple to operate. No controls. Just crank and go.

My mother had an MTD push mower for something like 15 years she didn't do anything to it, just added oil if it needed it, but never serviced anything. Eventually, she bought a new mower and let the old one sit for another 5 or so years. I asked if I could have the old MTD, she warned me it was junk but gave it to me anyway. I took it apart, changed the oil, fixed the wheels as they were sitting at a 45-degree angle lol, cleaned the underside, undercoated it, and cleaned the air filter. It runs like new now, I'll probably get 10 years out of it.

ive only used 2 different types of mowers, a regular push mower with no self propel and one where the mower propelled faster or slower depending on my waking speed. tbh i preffered the first one because the self propel system just added a bunch of unnecessary weight too it which made the push mower no more difficult
the propelled mower is a toro personal pace and ive never had any issues with it and weve had it for like close to if not over10 years. tbh i dont think any maintenance has ever been done too it other then maybe a carb clean and probably an oil change at some point.

I was wondering if you would be willing to put together a video on this same Honda model HRR2165VXA with the single handle rear wheel adjuster. These things inevitably fail. That particular video would likely save alot of owners, and eliminate a whole lot of grief.
I just replaced this adjuster on my own HRR Friday 6/29/23. It was and is a time-consuming job. You may be able to spot a few shortcuts to save a do-it-yourselfer some time.

The only dealings I've ever had with a blade clutch on a hand mower was on the dead Deere that I swa[pped the Kawasaki off of onto the Snapper and the blade clutch made a good blade adapter. and My answer is the same as yours as far as added complications. Basic is just fine with me. And as far a s no maintenance, Cheryl's old 89 Craftsman didn't have anything done to it till I came on the scene in 03 or 04. Now it had to have a new deck shell and the tranny laid down because I hadn't found out about the bentonite clay lube in the old Peerless trannys but now it smokes some but starts and runs just fine 11 horse Briggs flathead basic, no sleeve. Hi there,
Quick question about a project I have at hand, my Ariens lawn tractor.
It has a Kohler Courage Single Cylinder OHV engine.
It idles fine, but backfires when I shut it off.
The owner's manual says the throttle has to be set in the fast (3/4) position, before the engine shuts off, to avoid backfiring.
Clearly, it's well known that this engine has a backfiring issue, because they included it in the manual.
You'd think idling before shut off would stop the backfire, as there would be a leaner mixture and less fuel to ignite in the muffler.
Maybe I should've used a slower hand when throttling down?
Maybe the fuel mix is too rich and unburned fuel somehow makes its way to the muffler and combusts?
If the mixture is too rich, would that make it stall or choke out when going beyond half throttle? Something's improperly adjusted in the carburetor,
but which screw/needle? Also, this mower has very few hours on it and is practically brand new! I've been using it for 8 or 9 months. Just sharpened the blades today and greased the front axle and wheel zerks. Hope to take the best possible care of my tractor, so it'll last a long life of good use.

ah yes I've heard of this issue before. If it was mine, I would install a fuel shut off valve, and 2 minutes before I plan to stop mowing, I would reach over, and turn off the fuel. It can't backfire, if there's no fuel in the carb.
Any recommendations for a 1/4 inch fuel shut off valve? I heard a lot of them leak after a while. I'll likely buy a pack of them as to lower the average cost per unit and then I'll have a few spares. What about the engine choking out at above half throttle?
It seems as between myself and my grandfather, everything is always broken.
Also, I had a project weed eater branded trimmer. The carb has a leaking gasket and the pull cord snapped on me. It also needs carb work and other miscellaneous fixes. It ran when I directly primed the cylinder with fuel, so I know it has enough compression and a working ignition system.
For a rookie like myself, I hate to give up on it, especially because the engine has very little wear, but I'm done fooling with it. Maybe on Father's day, lawn equipment will be on sale and I can get a cheaper brand new unit, since I can't find any good deals on used weed whackers on FB Marketplace in my area. Times have changed and people know that their equipment is worth more than it was a few years ago, so getting a bargain isn't possible. And even free stuff is elusive.
It 100% depends on the yard(s) l am doing. Small flat yards then probably not, large or hilly yards then l would definitely would get the options.

I've always purchased Honda mowers. I bought my first one in 1985. Unfortunately I left that one with my first wife. Since 1990, I've only purchased 4 Hondas. I gave one away, sold one and still have two. The two that I have still run like a top.

Lawn equipment is the most abused next to a car. People are fine not doing ANY maintenance on their equipment until it will not start. I had a Snapper self propelled mower that ran for 27 years before it finally gave out. I would rather own a Snapper over a Honda. They are good mower and quieter than most. I usually find the air filter completely full of dirt, even to the point the carburetor was drawing oil from the crank case trying to get air. I agree, the blade clutch system sucks.
the old snappers yes, they're very good machines. And it seems your experience with them, was a very good one, so I completely understand.
The Honda mower is a good product. I've had mine 10 years and I just keep it clean, change the oil once a year and sharpen the blades. It still starts first pull. It does have its disadvantages. Firstly, I am a strong 98 kg guy, but it is simply way too heavy and too bulky to pick up and put in my boot. Secondly, the cheapest self-propelled Honda mower in Australia is $1,800. IF you can get one for $500 in USA, I think that is damn good value. I sure hope you end up changing that engine bearing in the one you just fixed. Maybe, I should import good used ones from USA and on sell them?

Had my Australian made Honda Buffalo Buck 20 years. Change oil every year and filters/spark plug as needed. It came with the Victa snorkel. Only parts I’ve replaced are wheel bearings and blades. I take care of it and should last another 20 years. Love Honda mowers!

Being (at least) somewhat mechanical minded, I really cannot understand why any adult with some life experience would pay upmarket prices for a high quality machine only to abuse it or fail to provide it the level of maintenance require to get the optimal performance and life out of it (i.e. getting their moneys worth). To me, that is not only a waste of money but an encouragement for the manufacturers to cheapen the quality of the product while maintaining or even increasing the high prices; if you fail to take care of your machine, it becomes more difficult to identify if a part failed from being made cheaply or from being abused. Also, I agree that if your paying a shop to service all of the addition features that most mowers don’t have more often, you could justify buying a cheaper machine, running it without an maintenance at all for 2-4 years, and just replacing it with another cheaper new machine every 2-4 years. I think I could argue that the expense either way would equal out to be about the same but probably slightly less by just replacing it; without the consumer feeling as though he’s dumping more money into the same old machine again? I would only be willing to pay up for a high quality machine IF I were planning to take care of it, service and repair it myself, and squeeze every drop of life out of it that’s possible! Personally, though, I generally don’t like owning machines or appliances that have harder to find, more expensive, or limited aftermarket parts availability. Doing my own work, I have made out extremely well running used equipment (sometimes even building one machine from the parts of two or more) so I rarely buy new, above middle-of-the-line machines and, even when I do, it is usually more about satisfying my own curiosity about experiencing the machine than expecting it to live a long life without additional costs or maintenance effort. For someone who has the ability and enjoys doing mechanical work, I think buying new, high end machines are largely unfulfilling. Most people in this situation would prefer bringing a used high end machine back from the dead, using it just long enough to get a feel for the user experience, then flipping it for a maximum profit and starting over again! I can only say that the machines I prefer to keep long term for my own person use are the machines that strike a nice balance between easy and enjoyable to use, powerful, dependable, affordable/easy to maintain and purchase replacement parts. Power equipment as a status symbol does not enter into the equation at all.

If I was going to buy a new Honda mower I would get an HRX that was self propelled and skip the blade block and self start features. I like the upgraded wheels. In Canada the top of the line with the HRX comes with Versamow, a plastic deck and an extra large bag. These are all features I don’t need. I had a brand new Toro once with front wheel drive and a Tecumseh engine that lasted for 18 years by applying meticulous maintenance and following the Owner’s Manual. The end came when the deck started to break.

Just to confuse issues I’ve gotten back my self propelled 21” Craftsman with a Honda GCV160 engine that’s been in storage over 2 years. This mower was my all time favorite with the WALK easy control feature. This machine was a pleasure to use and work on. I thought I could manage with a Troy Bilt push mower but no as still have mobility issues. So I’m trying to revive the Craftsman. It’s quite a mess and so I’m taking your approach of getting it just to turn over with a fresh small supply of gas. The previous operator told me it was put away still running and has been sitting with gas in it. Thanks for your comments and videos. I’ve been so pleased with the mowers I’ve bought and found out that with proper maintenance they can last up to 20 years!

Ive checked flywheel key valvers new carb gaskets and it still surges and i cleaned it
I swapped it with a 217 and that varb runs good also

my 20 year old Tecumseh Toro still starts with 1, 2 pulls max with nothing but a yearly oil change and plug. Dreading the day it dies, since nothing today inspires confidence aside from honda. probably going to pick one up and leave it in the box before they're gone.

We bought a very cheap mower for around 300 bucks, that is being used commercially and has been used so much that the ball bearing in the wheels literally disintegrated (easily over 1000h hours of use).
Surprisingly I could buy wheels from the manufactorer for 30 bucks a pop and all issues were solved, (teeth on the inside of the wheel was worn out as well).
Point is, modern mowers still last a long time, and ethanol was never an issue as well.
The low amount of Ethanol that is in gasoline doesn't cause any issues if you use the equipment regularly and don't store em over the winter with it.

Yes a bought a honda with all the extras but i do look after my equipment. My old flymo QS5160HW lasted me 17 years until the gearbox failed but i can't get a new gearbox for it.

Back in 2012, I was in a jam and needed a new mower quickly. Going to Home Depot, I couldn't make up my mind so, decided to go with the Honda basic self-propelled push mower, which cost a fortune. Since Honda is supposed to have good quality, I assumed this would be a best bet. This decision turned out to be a huge mistake, the mower has been substantially worse than any other mower I have owned since 1965. The problems seem to center around the design of the mower; I suspect the engineers were fresh out of school and had never used a lawn mower before. Since the mower cost a fortune, I had to make it last so, have modified it numerous times to make the mower actually usable. One of the biggest gripes remaining on the mower, is it's super low engine power which I estimate to be the equivalent to a standard single blade more having 1.5 to 2.0 horsepower. The engine quickly bogs down with grass that is 2" high, whereas my 1969 Lawn Boy mower cuts the same grass like a hot knife through butter (same 21" cut but, with a 109 cc engine, instead of 160 cc with the Honda). The Lawn Boy also weighs half as much as the Honda, making it much easier to maneuver.

I want to do an oil change on my huskqvarna 190 cc push trimmer but I can’t find the oil drain plug is there another way I don’t want the engine to blow up
remove the oil dipstick, plug a pan, next to the mower, and tip the mower on it's side

Hey i have a 3.5 hp brighs sxs.1481HH it was running really bad on run when i would accelerate it would try to die and most of the time it would die but on half chocke it would run perfect so i cleaned carb didnt work replaced it still didint work but the engine was ran 22 years without an air filter and it is pretty easy to pull do you think the engine is just worn out? And btw the engine is on banana bike.

I like Honda mowers very much. With minimal simple maintenance (air filter, and engine oil change, maybe a spark plug every 3-5 yrs), these things run forever. A simple water hose with the mower on its side at the end of every mowing season, would mitigate a lot of the issues seen with the underside of mower decks.

I make it a habit to check the oil level on all my machines periodically, and change all the oil out of all the machines in late Sept. or early Oct. just before it gets cold, generator, 3 snowthrowers, lawnmower, best time of year, no bugs.

not rod knock, it's an upper bushing issue. Because it still works just fine. the answer to your question yes it can. Mine was abuse and sound terrible like this one, and it's been running that way for the last 8 years.
Variable speed yes, blade clutch no. Hondas are great little mowers, but over engineered. 10 years and no oil change or maintenance, give me a break. There is a difference between life getting in the way, and neglect.
