When Jesus said that leaders should be servants, He turned the world's values on their head. The world is full of people in positions of authority, who use their authority to get things for themselves from those under their authority. Jesus' model of leadership is basically for leaders to use their authority to give to those under their authority. The difference between these patterns of leadership is like night and day.
That's a very good point that when Jesus was washing the disciples' feet, it in no way meant that Jesus had ceased to be the leader. It wasn't that he was serving them instead of leading. He was leading by serving.
