Thanks, I pushed all rendering options to their upper limit and my i5 computer with 16 GB ram, SSD and Graphics card maintained a 25-35 fps framerate. I also setup Julia Photorendering running multithreaded (quality s=5 of 6) in the background which downloads data from Google Maps and creates graphics tiles for FlightGear (ver 2020.4 required) to use in real time based on your location and heading in the simulator. FlightGear ran slowly with Julia at first as it created my immediate surroundings from nothing. But after 10 or 15 minutes circling the airport, it sped up and then it was able to create everything ahead of me wherever I flew even at low altitude F-16 speeds (whatever that is).
Open street maps for the entire world are in the main flightgear scenery since March this year. Looks fantastic with 3d buildings everywhere worldwide, and no need to download each osm pack.
Hey, good video. It helps. If you can upload a video on "how-to" create realistic scene with photorealist satellite mapping, it will be very helpful. You're a good explainer. Regards
Honestly speaking Flight Gear is the best you will get for free. XP11 is $60, and like 60GB. Fsx is $24.99. FG is free and possibly the best free flight simulator for PC
it is very sad to see that most people are more concerned with the graphics than with the gameplay, I am from the time of Master System consoles, Mega Drive among others, had great games and yet was 8-bit and people did not complain, now most gamers are more concerned about the graphics, the news generations do not know how to appreciate games or simulators
I have a feeling that non-focus on graphics is more prevalent among the indie gaming scene. Wasn't alive back then, but I've heard that this also happened with the Commodore Amiga; devs focused on pushing gfx and sound and leaving gameplay to rot - leading to games that are completely boring a decade later.
I find that the biggest problem with FlightGear and its perceived quality is its user-created content and other easily replaceable graphics. Orthographic scenery, for example, can really bump the quality, but an update of all other textures would make it really incredible. Then there's the aircraft. Now, I make addon aircraft for X-Plane 11, and I know it's not easy at all, especially if you're a single person. But most of the planes in FlightGear don't have very high quality... The 3D meshes themselves tend to have rather lacking detail at best, and look like they were made over 20 years ago at worst. There's _tons_ of jagged edges, even in simple structures, and the detail is just lacking. Then there's what's on top of the meshes: textures and liveries. Most of these things are extremely low res (relatively) so you end up with blurry details and words (this is not something anyone can pull of and not make look like shit), and I'm pretty sure I've never seen any implementation of PBR (varying degrees of shinyness). It's all matte, and while it certainly isn't as easy to implement as higher resolution textures, it would make a big difference. Finally, there's the ultimate airplane development devil: systems. It's obviously easier to make non-glass cockpits, but people still plaster flat panel textures on a simple model. It is way harder to make the visual assets and program them to look more like their real counterparts, but what most aircraft with glass cockpits have now just looks lazy (this is, again, because it's very time consuming and demands a lot of skill and experience). To conclude, I don't want to discredit the difficulty in making really good airplanes and the enormous effort that has gone into making the existing aircraft. It's super time consuming, and asking for money for such efforts would not be received well, so they always go unrewarded except for people's well-meant but immaterial appreciation. But most suffer from an insane lack of detail and they feel half-assed. Now, there _are_ exceptions to this. The 777 is pretty darned good. The best aircraft I've seen yet is the F-16. It is breathtakingly good. I'm sure there are other great exceptions, but, again, most aircraft fall very short of what I'm sure FlightGear is, and will be, capable of.
I agree. There's the occasional gem and many more uncompleted planes. Especially kind of problematic when people pick a random orbx aircraft and compare it with the equivalent (undeveloped) FG aircraft.
@@ddk I'm seriously contemplating learning how systems and flight model are programmed in FlightGear. I do flight modeling in my team (here's a forum post of one of our WIP aircraft: forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/forums/topic/203548-quality-flight-simulations-767-freeware/&page=4).
