I like how the human psyche works, rather than discussing what AI could bring into the picture the whole conversation pivoted to imagine a dystopian outcome. They are still clinging to that negative 5% outcome.
And there is nothing wrong about it, we are pessimistic humans have always been to basically prepare for the worst. But, history repeats itself, all these new age revolutions happened before too, and there were new jobs, new avenues that opened up.

What you are not considering is that with ai comes abundance of every commodity. So things will get cheaper and more affordable. People won't die of starvation. Quality of life in material sense will improve.
What I fear the most is rise in mental health issues as people suffer from crisis of purpose. This will eventually lead to war between groups just to feel relevant.

Throughout history, technology has made human race lazy, yet it has also significantly improved efficiency in various tasks. Similarly, with the adoption of AI, there is a possibility that humans may become less inclined to engage in creative thinking but more adept at achieving efficient outcomes.
If we consider the case of software engineers, AI adoption might contribute to a sense of laziness less creative among them, while simultaneously enhancing their efficiency.
However, it is important to note that AI will always serve as an assistant to human operators, offering superior options and insights. Ultimately, the final decision-making authority will remain in the hands of humans. Else the we would never require CXO who makes few decisions but of high impact.
Regarding job loss, I believe that it is the skill set that will undergo transformation rather than resulting in widespread unemployment. In the software industry, for instance, there is a constant need for engineers to reskill every 3-4 years in order to stay relevant. Failure to adapt and learn new technologies can render an engineer obsolete.
Therefore, while AI may bring changes to the nature of work, it is unlikely to lead to significant job losses. Instead, the demand will shift towards individuals who possess the necessary skills and can adapt to emerging technologies.

Albeit AI/ML definitely seems to be finally arriving at its dawn, similar to Comp Sci and programmable computers during the ENIAC days, I think most of the time when people say it'll replace humans, or that the future is AI, they seem to be on the hype train. I love AI, currently am in the process of specializing in it, but I believe we are still in the fairly early days, and there is alot more to do and explore. What we've seen has been progress primarily in generational AI and LLMs.

Just like how smoking is a status symbol in social connectivity also is an addiction tool similar to social media, there will be a counter market to detox for social media, like nicotex and deaddiction centers for smoking. There will be options for people to choose, the question is how many will use the detox. Hopefully the area of psychology will explode in a decade and all these materials will be available for most of the people.

I am also an SDE trying to get a deeper knowledge of AI so that I will be relevant in future in the worst scenario. But from the demographic perspective of India, I think the major population is still untouched by the technology which we use in the metro cities. So, there will be a niche class of our population affected by AI, the rest market is working offline only in most cities of India. What I am planning is to earn money in the upcoming 5 years while being in IT, then for a passive income, I will dive into farming or real-state business which will be unaffected by AI.

If people do not have jobs, they will lack the purchasing power necessary to consume goods and services. Consequently, companies would struggle to generate revenue and sustain their operations due to the absence of consumer demand. Therefore, contrary to widespread anticipation, a scenario of extensive job loss seems unlikely, given its potential severe impact on the overall economy.

But we do also need to consider that in a capitalist economy, a firm doesn't give a damn about the economy, it won't even think about the consequences of laying off people(which is lower spending by people, ultimately) , at first, a firm will only think of reducing its cost and thus, having more profits. But let's say later on they realise that people have reduced spending due to mass unemployment, I still don't think they will be doing mass employment again, as they need to keep the costs of commodities lower. Also, we need to keep in mind that due to lower costs, it's possible that commodities will get cheaper, but I still have no idea how the heck will unemployed people be willing to spend ... It seems like a never ending vicious cycle.

I think we highly underestimate and undervalue the power of empathy, trust and honesty in business under the guise of “aise hi hota hai” and forget the value a collective conscience can help to build a ‘good’ world. We need not romanticise any period in history or predict the future because either is quite futile. We also cannot abhor new technologies or advancing in (not necessarily progressing) discoveries but they should be done with a goal for a sustainable and long term output. PS- literally only all men commenting, maybe you should have a more diverse group.

    Bit of psychology here:
Varuns prediction is just a mental state that most people use as a motivation to move ahead in life but to other people, (here Nikhil) it sounds like he's very pessimistic.
Things are so good in our life compared to 100 years back where people walked miles just to get water. Infact, its so good now that we could be on a sofa and watch netflix all day that our basic need would still be fullfilled but then again, thats a slow journey to misery.
Anyways, Varun is just priming his mind just to getoff the sofa and achieve something worthwile using the same thing that he's interested to learn(Ai), then using it as a motivator by envisioning a worst case scenario.
For example: A top player in football could prime himself to think that if he doesnt perform, he wont have be first. But if you have to be on the top, motivation from a place of scarcity wont take you anywhere. Now that Varun is good in this field of AI. He should probably transition to a mindset where he needs to think he wants to be the most knowledgable person in this field by shifting his ideantity to a place where he wants to be the best.

the guy in white is absolutely right, AI is no joke it is so complex it has the ability to self learn which is the scary part. if people are out of jobs what will they be forced to resort to? its common sense! god help us.

Maybe people will switch to Freelancing and soloprenuership. But I guess that too will be quite unstable, because if there's mass lay off and almost every white collar worker start their own business, that means, I as a soloprenuer will face not only all these people as my competitors but also big firms which laid us off:-( . So I guess, we're doomed for future 😅

My views. Productivity boom will cause noticeable disruption in job market in next few years, followed by a major recession due to impact on consumption. Eventually in 10 years, people will adjust and move away from jobs culture to find new income streams using AI (being freelancers/solopreuners). To summarise, we will have a period of turbulence and post that the future is bright.

    • @akindia8519

Ok. Let's say that due to being laid off, majority of white collar employees switch to Freelancing and soloprenuership. But still don't you think that all these big firms with more resources, technology, etc. will be much ahead of us in terms of efficiency. With job we're having a stable income as of now, but if lots of people start their own small business due to job loss, then obviously, I as a soloprenuer will face intense competition in the markets and my competitors include not only those laid off people but also these big companies. So, I think, since probability of success in business is very low, then mojarity of us will be doomed

Yes, certain AI product companies will grow exponentially. IT services companies who continue to work on labour arbitrage models will go away eventually. In the short term as people lose jobs those who use AI to generate income will be in good place. Eventually, there will be deflation and cost of living will go down. Reset happens every 100 years. There is always this period like between 1930 and 1950 which is tough. We always lived in the world where quality of life has only improved continously

after industrial revolution man's muscle has lost it value , so we moved slowly into next level which is intellect based industries where the ability to analyze information intellectually played a major role, so now with A.I revolution we have to move into next level which is emotion based industries...as you correctly said compassionate capitalism...… currently youtuber Mr.Beast is doing that .....he made net worth of 100 million dollar by making UA-cam videos where he did lot of charity...may be this is the future for entrepreneurs...A.I does everything we does with intellect but it lacks empathy and compassion ....

Sir, these discussions revolve around only the elitist of society. Their plans, mannerisms, and thought processes. You need to consider an India which is still traditional, superstitious, and emotionally driven. People are still less impacted by technology in India other than in cities which is also at a very low level. Talk to a common man and you will realize the truth. We have a long way to go. Ten years of advancement will have almost nil effect on our Indian Society. Maybe 25 years can be a better range for the effect to see.

Nikhil you have a great question , but sadly it lacks integrity on your part to actually know the answer. Question like this being part of casual conversations get these 1 dimensional answers. if you actually want to paint the picture of the world 10 years from now, you need a isolated weekend with diverse set of individuals like someone with background in tech, finance, government, geopolitics, young adults (there outlook will shape future consumption and societal norms) , celebrities, spirituality etc. These people need to form groups and ponder over forces which will be more relevant 10 yrs from now. Out of this discussion next we can have a meta discussion among groups. This should give us a much realistic picture of the future and opportunity for you as an investor. let me know what do you think?
