I got mine 2 years ago for Christmas and it's definitely worth the price. I've used it to grind, sharpen mower blades, cut steel pipe, wire wheel, and remove paint. It's comfortable and durable.
I had a lot of old pipes and rebar to cut up and from what I read ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxPDBfLu68o58Aw85O_J-zIFfjJARBhp-3 this would be the tool for the job. Since I had never used one, I watched a couple of youtube videos and I'm so glad I did. Some really good safety tips, which I followed, and this tool did a splendid job. One good thing to know is the weight of the tool puts just about the right amount of pressure on the metal I was cutting, so I didn't have to use a lot of pressure, which is more likely to jam the tool. It made fast work of my job.
Ya the hypertough is the exact make as this. The only difference is hypertough has a 8 amp rated switch instead of 10 but the parts are interchange black and Decker makes all the hypertough tools. If you need brushes for Walmarts grinder you look up this bd grinder
Very nice video. I actually use one of these. I paid $31.00 in 2018 for it and used it a lot. The other day I pushed it a little too hard and overheated the windings a little but it still runs. Very good grinder for very little money.
People talk smack about B&D a lot, but they still are a great, affordable tool brand. My first jigsaw was a B&D, is over 7 yrs old and I still use it for everything today, and I think I only paid around $35.00 bucks for it. Seven+ years of use for $35.00 is outstanding in my opinion.
Very good and informative video. I would like to see you take apart a Bauer or the hyper tough (Walmart brand) angle grinder if you should happen to get your hands on one. Or any other hyper tough tool for that matter. Thanks for the great content.
I have the older model, and yes, it's amazing, 7 years and works no flaws (even tho I cut the cable with the grinder), for 25 euros... you can't beat it
I had apart a 30 year old makita grinder. It had a rough life, all the bearings were bad, the pinion broke. In the head it also had a bronze bushing, and it was mint. Tight, no wear at all. In my opinion a good quality bronze bushing beats a cheap roller bearing, I can imagine the more moving parts wear out quicker. Fixed up and using it of course :)
I just bought a "Parkside" grinder from Lidl (German supermarket chain). 125mm (5 inch) rat tail style, 1200W, quick adjust guard and speed control for 22.99€ after tax (that would be 21,13$ before tax). I don´t know if Lidl sells powertools in their US stores. I might take it apart and have a look, for the power it´s definitely very cheap, about half the price of nameless grinders with similar specs- I does come with a three year warranty wich is nice. Feels good, PA6-GF30 for the housing, the flex has a thermal plastic jacket though. These videos are very inspirational. EDIT: The Black&Decker seems to be a good offering for 20$. For some small stuff around the house or multiples for specialty attachments it´s good to have around. For everyday and professional use something a little better would be more like it.
Thanks a bunch for this work ! searching replacement for a vintage bosch 1347, this was pbly the most valuable/informative surgical teardown / test i ever watched. youre a referential level !
I didn’t like the Black & Decker model only because it was not cordless. I returned it and wound up repurchasing it because it can’t be beat for the price and performance. I’m still shopping for a cordless model of grinder, but still is very sufficient given that it lacks portability. B&D has outclassed the major manufactures with this tool. Thanks for such an in-depth examination and analysis. 👌💪🏽✅
DFN UNIVERSE I bought a Mikita cordless. I needed to wire wheel the mortar up on the chimney and didn’t want to bother with the danger of heavy extension cords. Awesome power for a cordless but they are not cheap and are all battery hogs. It’s tough to beat corded tools and even good ones are dirt cheap by comparison. I would never buy a cheap cordless grinder as even the pro brands have short battery life and those companies do a lot of work to get reasonable torque from them. The likelihood of making one on the cheap is nil. Drills are about the only tool that has progressed to a near equal state with corded drills(if you pay enough). I bought a cheap HF drill just to leave out in a hangar. Battery charger wouldn’t work. More expensive one wouldn’t work either. Friends had some that charged and I used it. Worked minimally for $20 but was soon tossed. Bought a $$ Mikita drill and now leave the cheap Porter Cable out there. It has enough power and life but the e-brake loosens the chuck when it stops. Just saying there are good reasons to buy great tools. BTW, I use my cheap corded grinders instead of the cordless just to save the battery cycles so these are still relevant.
I’ve got Vessel drivers as well. It’s interesting to note that they developed the JIS bit standard. The set I have is different. The tips are designed to properly fit both JIS and Phillips. They do work very well. I see that the B&D has the same wrench for the wheel lock as the HF model. I recently bought that HF model. Normally, I use both 7 and 11 amp DeWalt grinders. But last year, Jody from Welding Tips & Tricks showed an adapter for Roloc disks, which I bought. $15, and a great idea. So I can use them on an angle grinder in addition to my handpiece on my Fordoms. Problem is that they’re really too big, heavy and powerful for these 2” disks. The HF is perfect for that purpose. Small, light, and far more powerful for that use. The only complaint I have about the HF tool is the switch, you should talk about switches. The paddle switches are far better than any slide switch on an angle grinder. The paddles let one use at least two, and usually, three fingers to hold it closed. The grip is natural, as it’s the same you use to hold the tool. The little flip safety works very well so that you forget you’re using it after a short time. The push switch uses one finger, usually the thumb. It’s spring loaded for safety. But that spring is hard, and your thumb gets tired after a short while. Your hand also slips towards the rear of the tool, since you’re pushing the switch forwards. I don’t know how that BD switch feels. But the one from the HF is surprisingly tough to keep closed. I wouldn’t expect to see a paddle switch on a cheap tool, as they do cost more though. What does the BD weigh? One major reason I bought the HF for the Roloc was it weighs so little. But, this is the only grinder I took the guard off of. You don’t need it with Roloc disks, and the disk sticks out 4 inches anyway. That allows it to reach spots that you can only dream of with the 4.5” disks. You should try it.
What a great channel. I found it researching whether the Black and Decker bottom end would fit on my old burned out Freud biscuit jointer. This video has given me the confidence to give it a go. Worse case is a cheap backup angle grinder.
Glad you found Vessel screwdrivers. I bought one on a whim a year ago after encountering some JIS screws and use it almost every day. Their drivers work great with regular Phillips drives in my experience as well.
I'd like to see you tear down the red Harbor Freight angle grinder (runs about $16-$20); I've been told it's much better than the $10 one. I'd be curious to see what differences are inside.
Last year at my local Walmart I found one of these grinders for $15 and a Bostitch 3/8 inch plug in drill for $20. I got them both, the grinder came with 3 discs which come in handy for sharpening lawn mower blades, the drill has enough torque to rip the heads off of 3/8 inch thick lag screws if you push it that hard by accident, whoops!
New subscriber! I really like your attention to detail. I'm gonna pick up the B&D. I burned up my cheap harbor freight already and bought a nice dewalt. But I like having a spare cheapy! Lol
This grinder looks pretty good for the money. I'm actually looking to add another grinder to the shop. The B&D is ~$30. Makita's entry level grinder is only $10 more. HFT's Hercules grinder can be had for ~35. I've had one for over a year and it performs very well. Surprisingly so. Hard to seriously consider the B&D, given the competition.
@@ToolTeardowns yeah, I'm supposed to get notifications for anything you do on UA-cam. They just cant seem to figure this stuff out. However, they never miss a chance to notify me of the late show with Stephen Colbert which I've never watched lol
I've got the slightly improved Drill Master for ten bucks (with a coupon) and it's hanging after hours of use. It has better internal parts then the previous version and will hang if you don't stress the motor and overheat it.
Are you referencing this other video I made or something else? The grinder I compared to the Black and Decker was the better of the two. ua-cam.com/video/V2hTD4qkLic/v-deo.html
Thanks for the video. Lowe’s had the hitachi grinder a few months ago for $20 and I should have bought it. Been looking for a cheap grinder to leave a flap disc on. I get tired of switching discs all the tine. I may need to buy this Black and Decker as the Hitachi has gone up to $40.
I think the black and decker vs the harbor freight paddle grinder would be interesting to see. As they’re both around $25. And better then the $10 grinder. Great info and cool channel!!
This is an awesome video. Explains so many questions. However it’s been asked a few times, but don’t see an answer is there a part number for the brushes for the BD grinder?
Just to let people know, Black and decker is the owner of Stanley power tools and Dewalt. Black and decker is the low end segment of power tools, Stanley is in the middle and Dewalt is the high end segment of power tools.
Normally, I'm a big champion for the value HF tools offer, but that guard is a dealbreaker. Paying the $10 extra for a guard that can be easily adjusted is worth it to save you time and more importantly, stop you from wanting to remove it completely. Just google for angle grinder accidents to see what happens when a cut off wheel spinning at tens of thousands of RPMs decides to come apart. That $10 guard could save you thousands in hospital bills.
The Porter-cable PECG011 4.5" angle grinders are a rebadge of this grinder, Lowes has had the P-C grinders on sale for $16. Only problem is that finding replacement carbon brushes is not easy, and these brushes go bad almost instantly if these grinders get into a stalled situation.
i replace my old school power tool cords with the orange cord from hardware store off the bulk reel.i get some really good old made in usa electric power tools and usually because the cords are brittle and cracked exposing bare copper wires. the electric drills i retrofit the jacobs chuck with a key to a cordless keyless 3/8 chuck from a dinosaur cordless drill or a dinosaur cordless drill from a garage sale for a dollar.i can get old aluminum housing power tools for 1-5 dollars this way. with a little sweat equity i get a power tool that will outlast me. on drills i usually remove all the old grease and repack with synthetic grease.i lubricate the armature bushings and scotchbrite the commutator . i can dedicate drills with wire wheels and flapdiscs and just grab and go. most have the locking trigger. i also spray the switches.these old drills will get so warm you need to wear a glove but they always work and dependable after going through them.
I bought a Hazzard Fraught drill once. Let the smoke out while plugging it in. And burned the brushes out of it when drilling a 1/2 bit into a 2*4. You get what ya pay for.
I got the same type of black & decker angle grinder and the first time i used it i tried cutting a concrete fence post and 30 seconds in to using it , it stopped can you help and tell me what i might have broken or burnt in side the grinder I don’t want to throw it away as it brand new only used once for 30 seconds. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I pop the shields off or seals and change the grease inside them. If your careful you can pop them off without destroying it. And the I put a little layer of grease on the outside to help keep contaminate out
Excellent explanation -- Very Good knowledge you have -- very well explained in minute details . Just try & check other good make grinders like Bosch , Makita & Dewalt.
Great comparo, the HF probably cost 60 cents, to make the the B/D probably 85 cents. I have a Porter Cable grinder, got it on Amazon for $60.00 or so. But just like the others, it slings grease off the gears and flings to the sides of the case. It did, however, come with a cutting and a grinding guard.
Never heard of twisting to line the switch on top. Very good idea. I am left handed and this would help a lot. Can you do that to the Makita grinders? Thanks.
I have one but didn't used that much because I got a Makita for Just twice as much I payed for the BD. But I use the Makita as 220v in 110v so I got low rpm. Same thing with my new big Makita ga7020. Running on low voltage to get low rpm so I can use as a sander as well and not burn the wood. If I need high rpm I'll always have the BackeDecker on standby
I don't know. Maybe ebay or someplace may have them. There are motor brush assortments you can find at places like hardware stores, but I don't know if they would include that style.
I just acquired one of these, so found this very interesting and informative. I have a question... what type of cutting wheel were you using? was it a Type 1 or Type 27? (couldn't tell from the video). The reason I ask is that the manual says to NEVER use a Type 1 disc, and I have a bunch of them and no Type 7 cut off wheels.
This grinder uses a type 27 disc. At 11,000 RPMs, the wrong disc could potentially become a very hazardous projectile. I’ve put a fabric cutter hexagonal blade on mine to add even greater risk. Ideally, the disc is sandwiched between the two flanges and has not moved yet. However, I have only used it once with that flat disc and I’m scared to use it again. 😅. Hope this helps...
welder here and this is a great grinder. better than harbor fraud and wal-farts house grinders. Although their grinding disks suuuuuck. Throw them out and buy literally any other brand. Ace is good for a cheaper option. The best i found was dewalt.
Bought one these a year or so ago haven't used all that much because I have other grinders I use more but got this one because I didn't have a 4.5 inch one but it just failed on me at the head where the gears meet tried to fix it but can't find any parts so I will just throw it away and get another cheap one the thing may have about 2 or 3 hours of use
AWESOME and EVAULATION RESEARCH !!! looking into my First Grinder for $ 10-15 dllrs more B&D has the upper Hand ! Thank You ....Liked & Subscribed ! :)
Just to say the Black & Decker Brand is owned by Stanley. Which they also own Dewalt. Black & Decker is & has aways been their cheaper deal. But the Black & Decker grinders aren't all that bad.
@@ToolTeardowns I had that blackendecker grinder . It did not last very long at all . It s a piece of sh t.. you know what that sht with out the I in their mean s don.t you .
if anybody buys the orange recip saw from HF i found out when it sits for months without use it is best to start it with no load at full speed till it picks up speed and runs smooth before putting it to work. the commutator gets corrosion and has to be worn off in a no load situation. i always remove and replace the grease in HF power tools first thing when new. the grease they use is bad right out of the box. if you use the recip saw when its running intermittent it will heat up and overheat letting the magic smoke out
How come no one post videos of the hypertough grinder tear down. Black and Decker makes hypertough. The brushes from this grinder fit it. The hypertough switch is rated at 8 amps even though the motor is rated for 8. There's halfa dozen grinders with the same basic shape and anywhere from 5.5-8 amps. I would like to see a amp draw on these cheap grinders. Since the switch is half decent. Brushes are cheap like 5 sets for $12
2nd edit. The hypertough takes the brushes from the 6.5 amp grinder sold right next to the hyper tough. For a cheap couple grinders to have Walmart has them on sale for $16 right now. I keep one every vehicle there great to use and if someone wants to borrow it it's not a big deal they break or trash it. Or someone needs one at work if a tool goes down. I've put them through hell. All day grinding with flap disc. They can go replace it for $20. My favorites are my dwe402, and my 7in ridgid 15 amp.. what I always do is open up the gear case. Before I start it. And remove the cheap grease. And use the Chevron red lithium grease. And once ive ran it a month or so I do it again except I open the sealed bearinga and get the red grease inside them. Never had a bearing failure. The cheap grinders don't come with much grease and crappy grease they want you to buy more tools. That redgrease handles 10000 psi of the pump trucks at work. This is child's play for it. Never lost a bearing in any tools I've done this to from new. Drills, dremel, sanders.
Jeez. The comments, people keep talking about lawnmower blades. Do people really not have a hand file and 5 minutes? I want my angle grinder to cut some sheet metal.
Just my 2 cents, this grinder compared to my 4.5" makita is terrible. The cheap cord alone is a reason to hate this thing. It's stiff, short and doesn't seem to want to lose the folded shape it came with out of the box. The switch is awful to use and seems to get stuck, or won't stay on when you want it. The gearbox much louder and sloppier sounding. It's not as comfortable to hold. If you're going to spend $20, just pony up a little extra and get a bosch or makita... or save your money and just get a $10 HF grinder which IMO is pretty much the same as this one.
THANKS for the outstanding review and tear-down. You put a lot of thought and time into helping others and it is appreciated so much.

i replace my old school power tool cords with the orange cord from hardware store off the bulk reel.i get some really good old made in usa electric power tools and usually because the cords are brittle and cracked exposing bare copper wires. the electric drills i retrofit the jacobs chuck with a key to a cordless keyless 3/8 chuck from a dinosaur cordless drill or a dinosaur cordless drill from a garage sale for a dollar.i can get old aluminum housing power tools for 1-5 dollars this way. with a little sweat equity i get a power tool that will outlast me. on drills i usually remove all the old grease and repack with synthetic grease.i lubricate the armature bushings and scotchbrite the commutator . i can dedicate drills with wire wheels and flapdiscs and just grab and go. most have the locking trigger. i also spray the switches.these old drills will get so warm you need to wear a glove but they always work and dependable after going through them.
Shielded bearings have a higher RPM rating than sealed bearings. They are fine inside grinders.
Tnx for the demo sir..
What kind of brushes does the Black decker grinder use?
Great review and teardown brother
Thanks
Great comparo, the HF probably cost 60 cents, to make the the B/D probably 85 cents. I have a Porter Cable grinder, got it on Amazon for $60.00 or so. But just like the others, it slings grease off the gears and flings to the sides of the case. It did, however, come with a cutting and a grinding guard.
Never heard of twisting to line the switch on top. Very good idea. I am left handed and this would help a lot. Can you do that to the Makita grinders? Thanks.
I don't know about Makita. You can do it with a lot of grinders, but not all.
Yes, I would and do use warranties for budget tools.
BDEG400 is 6.5AMP now. i guess Black+Decker updated the internal components. Worth getting another one?
Loved this...
Had to subscribe!
Thanks for sharing. And nice review. I just subbed to ur channel🤟🏼✌🏻from Denver Colorado
Why DIY tools (like B&D) heat up fast and pro tools (Makita, Bosch) barely heat up? Does the motor run hotter or has a poor cooling system?
Good Review...
Could you Teardown Review of Ingco Power tools. Angle Grinder.
Thank you and more power...
Do you know where replacement brushes can be purchased for the HF "professional" angle grinder? I've gone through the spares provided in the box.
I don't know. Maybe ebay or someplace may have them. There are motor brush assortments you can find at places like hardware stores, but I don't know if they would include that style.
Do a teardown video about the craftsman cordless nailer.
I wonder how it compares to Harbor Freight's Chicago Electric grinder that's in the same price class?
They run so so hot in a short space of time
welder here and this is a great grinder. better than harbor fraud and wal-farts house grinders. Although their grinding disks suuuuuck. Throw them out and buy literally any other brand. Ace is good for a cheaper option. The best i found was dewalt.
Thank you for sharing ❤️ ☺
Very good video thanks 👍👍👍
Thanks for the kind words.
Have one, older type and after 15 years of use and abuse, the only failure was the switch. Cost to replace it? $12.00
i´d like to see aldi workzone Grinder it is only 20€ and has 1,2kw
I've actually bought some tools from Aldi in the USA, but I don't think I've ever seen an angle grinder there.
How does it compare to the Harbor Freight paddle switch grinder?
Do you have a list of inexpensive tools you think are of good value?
Bought one these a year or so ago haven't used all that much because I have other grinders I use more but got this one because I didn't have a 4.5 inch one but it just failed on me at the head where the gears meet tried to fix it but can't find any parts so I will just throw it away and get another cheap one the thing may have about 2 or 3 hours of use
What snap ring pliers do you use?
How replaced pinion gear
Wow, talk about a Detailed review!
Nope, Black & Decker used to have a professional line of tools - not cheap at all.
Do a Menards Masterforce 8 amp please.
I’ve been waiting for this vid
Thanks for being patient. I got delayed a couple times. I had hoped to finish it a few weeks ago.
@@ToolTeardowns I had that blackendecker grinder . It did not last very long at all . It s a piece of sh t.. you know what that sht with out the I in their mean s don.t you .
if anybody buys the orange recip saw from HF i found out when it sits for months without use it is best to start it with no load at full speed till it picks up speed and runs smooth before putting it to work. the commutator gets corrosion and has to be worn off in a no load situation. i always remove and replace the grease in HF power tools first thing when new. the grease they use is bad right out of the box. if you use the recip saw when its running intermittent it will heat up and overheat letting the magic smoke out
Where is it made? I am surprised to see JIS screws fitted.
China.
I will be doing a review on the earthquake xt brushless grinder soon from harbor freight
Interesting. I'll check it out when you post it
@@ToolTeardowns how much is it at harborfreight.
@@ToolTeardowns my blackendecker di not last long at all .
Brushes are cheap like 5 sets for $12
Motor for 6amps* not 8 I think it's draws a little more then 6. My 8 amp Ridgid doesn't have really much more power then it. Only a tiny bit.
Drills, dremel, sanders.
this Black&Decker angle grinder is made in china, and it is made in my town , Yongkang city, Zhejiang Provice 😁
I subscribed to your channel. pls, Do a teardown of the cheap 8v black and decker drill(LDX172PK).
And How can I Get
The color scheme makes it look sooo much like a Wen.
I think it looks more like a black and decker.
Best of the best !
Black and decker is still same company as dewalt but a lower quality but still worth your money
Jeez. The comments, people keep talking about lawnmower blades. Do people really not have a hand file and 5 minutes? I want my angle grinder to cut some sheet metal.
Halpfull advised
Just my 2 cents, this grinder compared to my 4.5" makita is terrible. The cheap cord alone is a reason to hate this thing. It's stiff, short and doesn't seem to want to lose the folded shape it came with out of the box. The switch is awful to use and seems to get stuck, or won't stay on when you want it. The gearbox much louder and sloppier sounding. It's not as comfortable to hold. If you're going to spend $20, just pony up a little extra and get a bosch or makita... or save your money and just get a $10 HF grinder which IMO is pretty much the same as this one.
Well if it doesn't have a trigger or paddle switch it's not safe. Those slide switches stick.
Alway I try to maintain my finger in the switch for that reason I hate switches but this is a good grinder for light welding works
This teardown rivals ones done by some guy that fights evil with arduinos
