No. Just one the surface. The first thing he said when he saw her was "Can't you even out it with Makeup?" Like what the hell.
And yes the old ladys said that tho. And even suggested a sugery. But because she did focus only on her eyebrows ar first. Not on the whole face. She though the girl had only one eyebrow. She only later recognized that the eyebrow is actually just there but white and that half of the girls face has no pigmentation. So that's different. But the male did recognize it at first glance. But still, he said such bullshit.
Also the part where he tells her "Oh I dye my hair too because of that! So I can totaly feel what you are goint through." No. You can't. Seriously dude. Did you loose your hair color and half of your faces pigmentation during YOUR teen years, too??? And did your supposed to be friends gave you nicknames like granny and zebra??? Telling someone you can relate to their pain and feelings, when you clearly can not, is insulting! Cause you will never know how they feel or must have felt.
And even later on he lied and said "It's not about the looks." Yeah. Sure. Tell yourself that. But not us or her.

@RandomDragon the reason is because it is an autoimmune disease where the body is attacking itself (in this case it’s attack melanin). Animals can also get it it and it’s completely different than black and white spotted animals. It’s the most noticeable in solid black animals like black labs or solid black cats. People can also be spotted or stripped to some degree, but it’s usually barely noticeable because the skin colours are usually very close. But I grew up with a mix race girl who looked white but had brown spots all over her whole body. It’s very unique and that’s not a disease. But this is a disease because it’s actually your body attacking itself.

No matter how beautiful, smart, and successful she is, her race (Filipino) and her skin color (tan) was something her ex's mom could not get over. Everytime they meet the mom always nags that her son could not find a pretty Korean girl instead. The lady also worried that their future kids might look not Korean and she might not stomach being related to them. We're still not over how open they are to telling that to my sister point blank. Even their mixed group of Asian-american friends points out how gross that behavior is.

You are entitled to think/feel what you want, but you don’t necessary have to say something if it’s unkind or unhelpful. It’s like the saying that words should go through 3 filters..”Is it kind, is it truthful, is it helpful?” It was neither kind nor helpful. Grandma lacks self awareness.
With Yumi, I believe she was trying to be “civil and elegant” in her response. She wasn’t being fake. What she said was truthful that the grandmas was being honest. She never said she was being kind etc. Although we don’t know how Yumi really felt, it shows someone not triggered by opinions which means she must have gone trough some healing around her appearance/self-worth before meeting grandma. Same with a friend that was about to die of a cancer. I like that they didn't just have accepting/polite people meet her. The older woman represents a sizeable portion of the Korean population, especially in her age range and higher. Many older people still have very conservative views and the way she only talked about how she would feel if her _son_ had an unconventional-looking _wife_ says a lot. Sons were favoured over daughters until very recently in Korea and many older people still value sons, grandsons, etc. in particular. My boyfriend has told me how he (an eldest son) has always been the apple of his grandmother's eye. It's very shocking to hear someone say such blatantly discriminatory things without shame, but it's a cultural reality for better or worst.

They're so technical and very much into making things look and sound perfect, even small differences such as how you eat or how you go out in public. No one wants to be unique or try to stand out that much, and everyone wants to live in this perfect bubble.

As an Asian, I do understand why people would get mad about what she said but I also understand why she said what she said. She said after looking at her the first thing that she thought of was whether it was genetic related. In the case that this was genetically related disease that could effect her own grandchildren and even her own son who has to raise them. My own Asian parents have told me to be alert about the possible diseases and sickness within the girls family before actually committing into the relationship. Possible genetic sicknesses and diseases would cause detrimental harm to the future generation. I am at no means saying that we should judge people based on their genetic disabilities, but I am trying to make sense of as to why the woman here would have said what she said. Her intention wasn’t to demean her looks nor her disease but she was standing from the standpoint of a parent of her own son.

I’m a parent of three. I simply hope my children are happy in their adult lives and that any relationships they have are with people who build them up and where I can be proud to see them building their partner up too. If I had peers/friends who were judgmental on the basis of something so stupidly superficial, it’s the “friends” who would go from my life. Why be so desperate for approval from others? She reminds me of my grandmother. She's almost 90, lived all her life in rural Finland. The time and place where she's from were harsh. You'd better be "normal", straight and god fearing citizen. So, what ever makes you too different, physical or otherwise, you cover, you don't need the attention and/or the judgement of the neighbours and the community. So I bet she'd liked to cover that girl in makeup if they'd go out to the village together, not because she would think that the girl is not pretty or that she would inferior in anyway, but getting the attention and evil eye from the others would be the end of the world. I don't feel sorry for my grandmother though, she is what she is and I think that in the context of her entire life she didn't miss out on anything by not being particulary progressive in her thinking :)
All that judgement coming from my friends though, now that would be a totally different story.

I was in depression for 6 years when Dr told me you have to go through surgery to recover. I was scared and left my house to live alone. I even thought about getting tattoos. I used to wear full cloths where people can only see my head to cover all my vitiligo. I started to accept myself recently when I found foreign friends who are not embarrassed being out with me. As that grandma said, people around me are same. It's the truth hard to swallow. Yes, I still get stopped in the middle of road to ask, "what is wrong with you?", and my relatives are "Who's going to marry you?". But you know what, I don't give damn about them now.
To the people who have Vitiligo as me I would say just be yourself. You are unique coz not all vitiligo patterns are same. Be out there and this nothing you should Hide.😍

Better: giving them positive vibes and transfer your happiness right to them with your voice and body demeanor alone, and by distracting them from their thoughs by talking and doing stuff they like.

I haven't seen anyone with vitiligo in real life, so if I did see someone it would be hard not to look, but that's not because I find it wrong in any way, it's just new to me. • @and3rzzzz
    @and3rzzzz Рік тому +405

As a Korean myself, I am also perplexed at how judgmental Koreans can be especially when it comes to appearance. But at the same time, I understand where it comes from, we’ve formed a culture of normalizing shame as if shaming someone is almost in a way a positive corrective action for people to “improve” on themselves. And since the outer appearance is the first and easiest thing to judge someone for, a lot of Koreans are obsessed with wanting to look beautiful so they won’t be shamed for how they appear, no matter how beautiful their soul is. It’s as if their physical beauty equates to the beauty of their soul for them. They ironically don’t see judgment as a bad thing when they themselves judge others, but don’t want to be judged themselves so they cover up anything that may be seen as a flaw. I believe the elder lady didn’t mean to say what she said to hurt the girl, I think she was just brutally honest with how she feels about how it would bring shame to not only to the girl but anyone she’s involved with. Shame culture is deeply rooted in Korea, because sadly they don’t see it as a bad thing. I hope my people learn the negative effects of judgment and shame and that it’s not okay to freely do that whenever we may please and instead become more open-minded and not judge others so quickly.

The elderly panelist is a very good representation of how I was looked at by my ex's family. It's a long story, but to shorten it down: I had already received criticism from a handful of older persons when we lived in Mapo for being a white guy with a beautiful Korean woman. None of them knew I was fluent in Korean as I spent most of my youth growing up in Korea, so it was hurtful to hear some comments that my ex had to endure (She knew I spoke Korean fluently, but told me to never get involved with bigots and to let things like that go). When it came time for me to be introduced to her parents they both loved me and even looked past the massive amount of tattoos I have (two full sleeves) because of how successful I was (I like to think, also in addition to my ex's dad being a very progressive guy).
On my second time meeting them they asked me about my family and heritage and when I told them I was half white and half Asian they became intrigued, wondering if my other side was Korean because of my fluency and mannerisms. I had been reluctant at first to tell them because my other half was Japanese, but a thought had occurred to me that if they accepted me for my tattoos then they couldn't be that old school. I told them about my family history and I could see my ex's mom shut down and then in turn my ex's father because of how bothered the mom was by it. I was unable to marry my soulmate because of old ideologies that are still present in a good portion of the population and the way her parents influenced her to break things off with me. I was left with a final comment from the mother: "I could tell something was off about you from the moment we met and I wondered if it was just me or if you were hiding something important from a parent. You would have made a good son-in-law and father to my grandchildren if it you were born differently."

I am happy to live in a society that does not pay so much attention to my condition. A child also told me once that I have beautiful hands, full of colours haha ❤
I am so sorry to hear that some people with vitiligo suffer from low self-esteem or do not see themselves as beautiful. In my opinion, it is unique. Just put on some strong sunscreen and you're fine!

No matter how many times I explain that I have vitiligo they just don't get it and say I just need more sun xD

I personally am experiencing this even now and can't really say anything because the parents take out the parent card and since I still can't earn my keep gotta tolerate as much as possible. It is what it is. In Asia parenting in general is really weird tbh.

It's so interesting to see another countries take on how they feel about it, my partner and I both have vitiligo in the same area. We both had a bit of a shock and a laugh about it when we first told eachother. Chances of two people having it affect the exact same areas is pretty damn rare. My most visible area is what I like to call my sock mark, it's a huge white band around the bottom half of my right leg down to my foot. I also have it on my inner thighs and around, so for me it's easier to cover and no one knows unless I'm in a bathing suit. I've had some off comments about it in my younger years, nothing to much in my older since I wear a lot of covering clothing.
For this girl, she has so much beauty having it where she has it, I can understand her fears of being different. I felt the same way. Mine developed when I was 7, my mom freaked out, opted not to do steroid/light treatment to help the pigment come back. I'm thankful for it because it makes me unique. It makes my partner unique as well.
I hope she finds someone who finds her beautiful the way she is and treats her with the respect and care she deserves, and not as some unique oddity to behold or coveted. She's a beautiful woman.

I also have vitiligo but because I have darker skin, my vitiligo REALLY stands out. I use to cover it up with makeup and do a bunch of skin treatments hoping that it would make my vitiligo go away. My grandma has even made me put holy water on my vitiligo spots. I eventually realized I was working 10 times harder to cover it up and please my parents who were afraid of the world for me rather than accepting it as something that makes me stand out and become way more memorable! Of course I still get self-conscious when ppl stare at me because they’re unfamiliar with it but I take it with a grain of salt and just chalk it up to them being ignorant on the topic. I do still wear makeup sometimes although ppl tell me not to because at the end of the day I can do whatever I want with my body. I swear I’m not telling you to “stop wearing makeup” or doing what makes you feel most confident/comfortable, just wanted to let you know that you’re seen and your decisions are supported!!
