    So my theory is it's stimulating (not like that!). Repetitive, high pitched noises and actions can be pleasing to someone who is neurodivergent, or even someone's who's not. That's the most sane reason I can come up with. I mean, people probably just want to see if they can keep it up but yeah.

    • @jasperjudd
      @jasperjudd 11 місяців тому +3

      Actually that’s a very good point. I’m autistic and adhd, and both suffer from low natural dopamine, or at least atypical dopamine. For instance, autistic people often get lower than average dopamine from typically high dopamine activities (mainly social interactions, but also sometimes things like eating food and even exercising) but receive large amounts of dopamine from their special interests. And of course autistic individuals can enjoy socializing, but typically enjoy it a whole lot more if the topic revolves around a special interest or hyperfixation.
      Because of this, neurodiverse people are particularly susceptible to dopamine rushes, (a good example would be how skin picking, aka dermatilomania, is more common amongst neurodiverse people, especially when they’re anxious, because it gives little bursts of dopamine and therefore feels mentally soothing). However, as the internet and social media has evolved, attention spans and dopamine levels have been getting worse for even neurotypical people. Apps have started to perfect the art of quick little dopamine boosts, which keep peoples attention and causes the endless scrolling effect. Basically, you get just enough dopamine that you aren’t satisfied but will keep looking for more by scrolling more.
      Studies have been showing that these types of apps that utilize this scrolling effect actually leads to depleted dopamine receptors and as a result, more of an addiction to keep seeking these dopamine bursts. Studies have done brain maps to look at brain activity before and after a week without social media, and the results are pretty extreme.
      Since TikTok has perfected those dopamine bursts better than any app, it makes sense that people who use it a lot have messed up dopamine levels and are desperate for that “fix”, and I can absolutely see how these NPC streams would exploit that and be strangely hypnotic as a result.
      I pick at my skin and when I do I go into a sorta trance that becomes hard to get out of because my brain get stuck in this loop of trying to get that tiny ounce of dopamine, and I can totally see how these NPC streams could do the exact same thing.
      Sorry for the long bio psychology ramble, I just never considered that perspective before and I found your comment super fascinating!

    • @princessjuliana7309

      I honestly think it's also for the sense of safety and control. People have been so stressed nowadays that this sort of parasocial interaction of influence gives them a strange sense of ease and security. It's kinda sad honestly-

    • @jasperjudd
      @jasperjudd 10 місяців тому

      @@princessjuliana7309 that’s another good point. The repetitive nature takes away any chance of unpredictability or uncertainty. I can see how the completely unchanging nature of it could potentially feel like a sort of comfort to people lacking the comfort of routine and certainty in their own lives. Especially when it’s so repetitive that it’s an easy mindless watch. I think it almost falls under the category of potentially meditative to (especially gen Z) viewers.
      It’s sort of like playing one of those mindless zoning out apps that are easy to play for hours on end (and where you don’t actually achieve anything meaningful), where everything is predictable and you can have even more control and engagement with it if you just spend some money.
      Except it has the added benefit of parasocial connection, where just knowing that it’s a real person responding to your input kinda tricks your brain into believing it’s some sort of actual human interaction, and because of that it tricks your brain into giving you a bit of extra dopamine.

    The fact that people can do this for hours is quite insane. Just imagine if they devoted that time to learning instead. Money holds absolutely no value at this point.

      Money hasn’t had value for decades.
      Fiat currencies made sure of that, some people work hard for money. Some parasites abuse the system and just move money around for it to grow. Some parasites abuse mentally ill people to send them cash because they are incredibly lonely.
      If the economy ever crashes i will be beyond happy. This fucking game has overplayed its part.

    I learned about this the other day and I still just don't understand. I feel second hand embarrassment from both the people who donate and the people willing to do this for the money. Mostly former though. Because honestly they should be ashamed of themselves for apparently being into(?) this. Just a few seconds grinds on my nerves and welcomes a beginning of a headache.

    I like this take. I'd never do it or spend the cash to give stickers but if you're deciding on a minimum wage job or making $800 a week min, just do this until it dies off and move onto the next trick. So long as you're not shlopping glizzies in an ally or something, it's clean income.
