The World's Next Ocean

- A volcanic eruption and series of earthquakes in 2005 were important not because they did a great deal of damage to humans, but because they’re geologic evidence of where Earth’s next ocean will most likely pop up.

Show us a map damn it
I was gonna say the same, an animation would've been nice.
locations of the volcano, new rift in relation to the existing rift would have been nice
seriously. for how visual and detailed these guys are, that's an epic fail.
That's my only problem with scishow is the lack of illustrations
I was hoping for the same thing!
This is another great example of a SciShow video that needs more images and diagrams of what is being described instead of just showing a guy standing there talking.
Thank you for saying exactly what I was confused about also.
That's a little harsh. There are tons of images. Most of them are images of the words he is reading from the teleprompter, while he says those words. Some of the words are even in different colors! If that's not captivating enough for you, try turning on subtitles. (Don't actually do that. It would probably cause suicidal thoughts).
karmakazi219 lmao I think he means that he wants them to show where the rift actually is and what part of Africa is going to be ripped away
I didn't see the hypothetical ocean formation and location on the map. That would have been really helpful as a photo or animation is worth a thousand words.
Andrew Perry - does "Some of the words are even in different colors!" not read as sarcasm to you? lol
eh, can you guys redo this and add some graphics? it would be EXTREMELY helpful if you can show where it is, how it's growing, and what it will likely look like in a few thousand years.
Just a before and after image of the country should suffice.
Indeed, gave them a very rare thumb down 'cause all I could think about during the video is "SHOW ME!"
+
The video really needed more maps and visuals. I understand this content well enough, but a lot of people aren't going to know where the rift is or where Ethopia is even.
It's in the country of Africa
Matthew Cowell I would hope people watching a channel called scishow have enough knowledge to know where Ethiopia is, still your point has value
Agreed. A regional map (with example faults) would help with understanding orientation, length, etc.
Also, the Rift Valley is anthropologically interesting... Another video???
I don't know about that, it was in the news quite a few times and has possible history theories that people do research. Though a map showing the line of the rift will take and a visualization of what will occur would have added greatly to the videos cause.
Indeed. Not everyone goes on Google Maps and looks at Ethiopia for fun, as I do.
Interesting, but I would liked to have seen some graphics/map of this happening.
google it :)
Yeah that could've been cool! Do you like learning visually? That's what I like to implement on my channel if you'd be interested?
the map could not have been any lamer. how about a map of the faults and the rift valley and the location of the volcano on the map in relation to the fresh rift and the existing rift.
C- less than average work went into the production.
Considering it happened in 2005, it's not like they were in a rush to report this...
You look like my Art teacher 😂
So SciShow ... Prepare yourself for a remidy class.
And a couple of fundamental mistakes too.
RIXRADvidz Why do you feel entitled to high quality free content?
The dialog was fine; but the fact that no one bothered to illustrate exactly where the rift is and how the sea will rush in ruins the whole video. Very disappointing.
Cool subject... but you broke rule #1 in the filmmakers handbook: *SHOW, DON'T TELL*
Very true
Very true - as a science channel myself I would love to see scishow embrace more images and footage/diagrams etc.
If you want the detailed, more illustrated, clearer and more simplified version of the techtonic separation in Africa's Rift in East Africa to form a new continent; check this out, no kidding!

Hi
Thank you. No good map showing where the crack is located and it’s length. Sad effort
I can't stand they provide no visuals to whats happening. Looking for better coverage.
Yeah, because CGI has reduced the average individual's ability to use their imagination. It's funny when you think about it, in so many different ways. You lack the ability to imagine a shitty functional animation when given all the information to do so and swimming in virtual renditions of reality. I imagine you murmur "I'm going somewhere that offers better coverage" on the third page of a good story. The sad decline of civilization is sad only for those that will not profit from it.
@@circleofsorrow4583 Hmm, I guess all those illustrations on science textbooks are useless, we should just use our imagination
@@crediblesalamander8056 well yeah. I suppose we have to change all science book illustrations with words like. "Here is an image of a human body. It is muscular. Imagine the details of its arm. Got it?" if we can't understand from just that, then it's us who are lacking imagination really.
You don't have to watch the video's they give out for free, ya know?
Kristi Marie nah, i appreciate scishow, i'm just saying it would be alot better if there is some kind of map. im just making fun of the guy who think that we lack imagination for saying that some kind of map would be nice
It's gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred earthquakes or more could ever do
I bless the quakes down in Africa
Gonna take some time to form a new ocean we never had
du du du du du du duuuuuuuuuuuuuu
The seismographs move all through the night,
ever restless marking out the force and the frequency,
One side's going left one's going right,
As sure as the Great Rift Valley runs from Lebanon to Mozambique
I see the magma rising deep inside, startled by how divergent it's become
you win, you beat mine. that was great.
ColonelSanic They were both epic - and way more entertaining than the video.
I feel the grounds rumbling tonight
but she feels only tremors from some volcanic eruption
she's coming out, 12 or so faults
the shifying rifts reflect the plates that drift in odd directions
I stopped by a crack along the way
hoping to find some old and dormant faults or ancient orogenies
its widening as if to say:
"we can't wait some million years for you!"
Theres about to be another new one; I'm running out of places to store all my sweat from my workouts
If Chuck Norris' tears cure cancer
Your sweat must cure Diabetes
This is such an interesting hobby. Respect.
Good to see ya m8
Muscle Hank but I thought the strong don’t sweat
Lmao
Please include maps. :-D
This video would have been way better with animations, maps, images... (and definitely less footage of the person that's talking)
this is why asapSCIENCE and Life Noggin are my favorites!
Yeah agreed! They have in the past so figured they would here! Ah well, still pretty interesting stuff!
Vanessa G. Love those channels! Would love for you to check out mine and see if you're interested! I use a lot of animations and images etc. to spice up the knowledge!
+
The video would be better with a couple maps showing the possible changes
I love using maps and images to help explain a topic in my videos, it makes it easier for me as well 😅
They showed one at the end, but it was still unsatisfactory
I’m gonna need The Infographics Show to do this video so I can understand what you mean 😂
He'll sprinkle a bunch of false information in there if that's what you prefer.
Just one map which illustrates what he's talking about would be more useful than staring at his t-shirt for 5 mins
Ground move....water come....floor wet. :-)
a chunk of east Africa will snap off into a island in 10s of millions of yrs
I unsubscribed to The Infographics Show after realizing that they put out a lot of false information. They might have fancy visuals, but if I can't trust them, then their content is of no value to me. They're more about quantity than quality. I mean they sometimes upload 3 videos in one day. Research is not where they spend their time.
I do agree that this video would be much better if they could have just shown a map.
A brand new "sea", not ocean. There's a real distinction there. Great stuff regardless.
ErgoCogita It's a rift, which eventually will create a mid-oceanic-ridge and new oceanic crust. So no, it'll eventually be an ocean.
I was gonna say that
@@Matsie36 isn't there just one ocean?
Matsie36 Why is "The Dead Sea", a sea but the "The Great Salt Lake", a lake? I can never find a straight answer when I google it, you seem like you might know.
Kristi Marie
Because we name things how we view them rather than what they actually are.
like strawberries, they are technically not berries because they have their seeds on the outside of the fruit, a real berry has the seed inside.
Also the dead sea is called that but it is still a lake, every body of water than isn't the ocean is a lake.
the Baltic sea, black sea and Mediterranean sea are seas because they connect to the worlds ocean, directly, they are part of it. Think of seas as sections of the ocean that is close to land.
lakes are enclosed and separate from the ocean, like the Caspian sea (known as the worlds largest LAKE)
You're telling me that in a couple of million years I'll need a boat to travel from Somalia to Sudan? Oh, no! There goes my dream vacation!
I would love to see this new ocean in person.
UNLEASHING POTENTIAL - PSYCHOLOGY VIDEOS I kind of want to go there now just to see what it’s like now, and then go back when I’m almost dead, to see the difference
Who doesnt? Everyone loves unique things
Swim in it
10s of millions of years bruh
Well who knows if the rift opened all at once after one eruption, and some odd things have been noted to be happening with the plates, like moving faster, we maybe in for more of a shock then what is realized, maybe their periods of fast movements but we can't decipher correctly any evidence pointing to it. Though if a theory of mine and is hinted to with some of the old maps, holds true, well... Be ready for a rollacoster here soon.
A possible reason there are no graphics is copyright protection. Unless SciShow is willing to hire someone to craft graphics more or less from scratch, they have to get permission from the copyright holders of any graphics they find online.
It may be that it's getting harder and harder to get such permission in time for production. The wild west days of UA-cam, when people slapped other people's junk all over their content, are fading fast.
I think they need to do an episode addressing their lack of visuals. It has always been an issue for me. But good point!
The great rift valley? Isn't that the cradle of mankind? Didn't we evolve from that?
Fascinating. Thanks for the video!
Wow! This is really crazy. The Earth is always changing and this just sows one of the bigs changes it's going through. Thanks for this cool video!
One of my favorite geologic topics!! Thanks for the great video!
What did the Pacific Ocean say to the Atlantic Ocean?
… Nothing, it just waved
e4r HA!
that one's all wet.
Sea ya!
Scientists: - You're not gonna see it, it happens in 30M years.
Also scientists when see much bigger cracks than expected: whoopsy
Really more of a sea than an ocean
It's a rift, which eventually will create a mid-oceanic-ridge and new oceanic crust. So it'll eventually be an ocean.
you've grown to be one of my favorite presenters on the scishow channels, keep up the good work! :D
good episode, just suggest more maps, esp. at the beginning, to better visualize where the ocean might form
The greater Somalia will unite again in an island like Madagaskar.
Wiil Hoog no we wont you unite with you the only way we could unite is if we adopt the uk system
Somalia Hanolato!
That’s awesome. I hate hearing words like “long after we’re gone” I wanna see it all!!!
Finally a small geographical depiction at the end.
more maps and graphics, we dont want to see you !!! we want to see the rift, maps of it, the volcanoes ! etc.
🖓🖓🖓🖓
I'm so happy I'm not alone in my love for maps and geography.
Ego always ruins these channels. Arrogant little snots.
Bryce T Sawyer There's really nothing like good ol' map. Well, maybe waffles. Waffles are great.
@@TommoCarroll yes, ive got nothing against waffles, specially them blueberry ones !
Can’t wait for the ocean expansion pack
"Long after we're gone." Thanks for giving me hope... 💀
Amazing pieces of information. Something worth pondering over.
Thanks for the video!! Really interesting :-)
Another good and informative show, thanks.
Earth in Season 6 with those rifts is looking snazzy.
Did I seriously make a fortnite joke in science channel? Good lord.
The people have spoken Sci show. Do a follow up showing locations, the rift and what the new ocean could look like.
0:31 Does anyone else care about those dead animals or is it just me? Come on people ...
*PRESS F* to pay respects to those goats and camels
Would've been worth mentioning what role the the Great Rift Valley played as the cradle of humankind but oh well, good enough I guess...
This strikes me as one of those rare SciShow videos that needed much more visual aid than it had. Lots of talk of volcano eruptions, rift valleys, continents being ripped in two, "new oceans" (in the tile of the episode, even) and specific tectonic plates, none of which were given much visual information. Like radio.
Welcome to SciShow. The only show where you can turn off the audio, or the video, and still get the same amount of information.
Great video.Would be better if you showed a map on how the continent would be split.had to search for it in other videos as this one peeked my interest.
'We won't be around to see this new ocean ourselves' speak for yourself. I can't wait to see it.
Holy moly.... I must say, John Gregorys mustache was glorious! lol

It’s 2Am in my country but it’s ok to watch scishow then get sleep 😴
Its 1am in my country
Europe? Russia? Africa?
Cody NvidiaGeforce Asia(Middle East)/Jordan
This is a great video. It would have been nice to have some maps to show the gorge and rifts on the continent.
I remember reading a book when little and it mentioned that the African Rift System will one day be an ocean. It's really cool that we are seeing the birth of a new ocean.
Great info, but your lack of illustrations and maps was very frustrating and disappointing. Please do better next time.
There are tons of maps and pictures on Wikipedia for free use. Also, you can search for such content simply by filtering it in Google. Maybe you guys could do less episodes per week, but more crafty ones.
Love your channel btw :)
According to popular internet things, this new sea will be named Toto
This really needed a map showing where the recent new rift is, and at least roughly where the Big Split is expected to happen.
Love you guys!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I guess we're supposed to follow along on our globes or something.
10% subject images, 90% video selfie.
Just learned about all this in my geology classes, guess i'm gonna binge scishow before my examns
John Gregory clearly spent most of his time studying the seismographic effects of his own mustache.
Gives a whole new meaning to "I'm gonna tear you a new one."
Lake Baikal, the deepest fresh water body in the world, may also turn into a sea depending on how fast it widens each year. It’s quite possible it used to be connected to the oceans at some point. It’s depth, eco system, and uniqueness may be evidence that it was a sea in the past.
This video seriously needs to be redone. Looking through the comments shows a unanimous consensus that we wanted to see an animated map of the rift occurring.
Guys images and visuals cost a lot of money to buy and use in videos. They probably strained their budget too much for the time being. Give them a break please.
> Give them a break please.
No.
I'm right there with you wick. Luckily this morning a lot more people are asking for a better map so they can understand the content better. They aren't complaining that the map wasn't good enough.
Education gets NO BREAKS
NOoo! We are not hating their video, Well kind of but we are trying to help them create good content.
I agree with the comments of HelixSnake, but still, I love the T-shirt.
~autistic screeching~ *WHERE MY PURDY PICTURES?!?!*
Thank you for not letting me see/visualize what’s going on
This video should've had more maps of the volcanoes and the rift. Some people don't even know where Ethiopia or the horn of Africa is, plus, illustrations really help the process of learning. Great video anyways, but there is space for improvement on other videos like this one
PS: my english is a work in progress
You are progressing nicely.
Christel Headington thanks!
The Great Rift Valley is one of the most diverse and beautiful places on Earth. I highly recommend watching the nature documentary called "The Rift", which is in three parts, and also on Netflix
I wish this video had included a picture of Africa with blue/or arrows indicating exactly where and how big an area you are talking about. (Thank you for the video. Always like to see Stefan.) cheers
I do t think people realize it but when Africa splits the water is just gonna flush in insanely quick starting a tsunami
How about a visual aide? Like an animated map or something, showing how and where is it happening.
We all need an animated projection of what it may look like in the future, where the split will be e.t.c. *The words aren't enough.*
We needed some animations to understand what exactly is going on. Just a map to show where this is going on would have been so helpful
You need much more pictures and maps. When you talk about a country, show a map. When you talk about a rift, show a picture and/or a map.
Hey @SciShow, about that rift in Kenya in April this year, I think it didn't have to see with tectonics, it had to do with preassure and a cavity meters underground.
So please check that, and thanks
What a ...Ground breaking discovery .
This show needs more visuals.
Edit: Didn't realise the amount of comments already mentioning this. Sorry for piling on.
Damn why cant we ever get to see the good stuff happening.
Muscle Hank has returned!
Rifting sounds like the newest extreme-sport one can do. Probably not a good idea.
Would be loved to see a computer simulation of what the new geography would look like.
We should try to make sure the Earth's next ocean is everywhere. Better for the fish that way.
Cracking open a big one with the boys
Whoa, wait, who is the president of space?? What... what happened to SR Foxley??
I'm still here! The President of Space position can actually be shared by 30 people per month. I'm happy that Matthew has been making great regular contributions and hope to see more Presidents of Space in the future, too!
A big giant map so we could see the result would have been nice!
The Rift Valley in Africa is also where the oldest remains of humans from millions of years ago have been found.
Saying this as a prediction at the beginning. Great Rift Valley.
Nailed it.
Very cool story, but I would have like to see the new crack you're talking about ant simulations (or animations of your best guess) of what yhe rify would look like in the future
this happened 11,600 years ago during the younger dryas extinction event, which is what sunk atlantis (which was built on the richat structure,) and created the sahara desert.
I thought about what we coukd do to speed up the process to give room from sea rise, and then realised images and maps I found from Googling this shows this could split the country of Djibouti, and one od the more direct routes to one of the rift would go right through an airport and some communities. So even with this happening despite the area across the sea from Saudi Arabia looking like a desert, a lot of people and infrastructure would need to be moved/replaced.
I'd love for time travel in order to swim in oceans in Earth's history and future
Yay! Future choking on plastic bags.
I wish you had included more maps and graphics, like, most people don't know where Eritrea is or what the great rift valley looks like
Okay, have to point out one medium size flaw here: There's no map that shows what's going on. That really would be useful to people who don't already know what this video is all about.
You mean the legendary Tethys is making a comeback?
I find it incredible that a gigantic, 8M wide rift suddenly ripping open on the Earth's surface was only accompanied by small earthquakes.
There are these things called maps. Very useful when talking about things happening on continents...
A map showing the location of where you are talking about right at the start of the clip would have helped a lot for people to be able to place the areas you are talking about. AND from all the other comments showing the same thing I just wrote maybe your video editor should take note.
The Horn of Africa: "To boldly go where no piece of a continent has gone before!"
I knew about the African Rift but what I didn't know, it started cracking open like an egg in 2005. I had no Idea that it started in my lifetime. I do know about the hot springs over there and as much as I wanted to go and check it all out, I found out that I couldn't go. Lol. So I guess Yellowstone is it for me. I am ok with that.
