Wow great video I have a red 1959 MGA roadster like this but mine has an MGB 1800 engine. I've just had the the paint fixed, differential done and new disc brakes replaced. She looks and drives great now but being an older car you certainly get a good work out after a long drive but I would'nt have it any other way its like driving a time machine and I love it.

I miss these MGAs. When I was young I had about five of them in the 60s and 70s. I should have kept the last one as it was a 1962 fixed head coupe! I taught my wife how to drive a stick in that car. Wonderful memories of owning MGs, Austins, and Triumphs.

Hello, thanks for the reply. Glad to know she is in a warm dry garage! I lived in UK for a good few years before returning to Oz a fews ago, so know how bad it can get. The MGA is a superb car, the quintessential affordable late 50s British sports car. I've driven an MGA with the later 1.8 litre engine and overdrive from an MGB, now that is a great car, with no disrespect to the original 1500 and later 1600 plus which I love. Great days and all the best.

That would be an awesome combo, the perfect sports car look with a bit more power and better gearing, most classics can take a bit of improvement - have you seen my Rover V8 videos, taking a 4.6 from a Range Rover and building it for a P6?
Im a bit envious of your climate, a hot rodder friend moved out there recently and all I see now is Model A's in the sun!

I had one years ago, it was a pleasure to drive. I struck a bump on the BQE in NYC and it felt like the only part of me remaining in the car were my fingers on the steering wheel (shocks needed a little work).

That's normal. Suspensions on these little buggers are very stiff. I was always in awe of how, when pushing down on the rear "hip" of an MGA, I'd get virtually no give. I drove my '67 Sprite on the BQE too and there was a curve goin left with a hump. Whenever I was getting close to it I'd warn my girlfriend and just as I was about to hit it, I'd yell UP! and we'd both lift our butts off the seat . Otherwise our kidneys would get slammed !

The CKD cars were all assembled in Nelson in NZ and had a lot of local quantity. The base units were delivered stacked with the roofs cut off at the base of the pillars for re welding.
I bought a self-published book by an ex employee of the plant whom I later met in Nelson on holiday about the history of the plant. The plant did Triumph 2000/2500, XJ6, Mini etc. etc. and also SD1.
I've driven a couple of LHD Nada P6B in UK in the 90s. I knew of a classic car specialist who was bringing them in back then - the ultimate P6 they are in my eyes - all they need is a manual box.

A beautiful example of an excellent little classic British sports car, I worked on these as an apprentice and the 1600 Mark 1 was the ultimate MGA in my humble opinion. More reliable than a twin cam, safer than a 1500 due to disc brakes and separate lights styled onto the rear wings. The mark 2 had an ugly recessed grille and the rear lights were an after thought IMO. Being a purist the only downside was that the 1600 mark 1 was never made in Glacier Blue.....but I can't have everything haha!!

The 1959 MGA I have was originally in the Powder Blue, but when I had it restored I changed the colour. Its a Mark 1. Now it is Old English White.

    • @graemew7001
      @graemew7001 5 років тому +1

@@48sydney Old English White is a really good choice as cars painted that colour can take either the red or black trim and hood and look exceptional in either one. Your car may have been Iris Blue which is the other blue that I would have. I've always said that if I came into the position to be able to afford it that a Mk1 1600 MGA is my dream car. Although if it wasn't a fresh restoration I'd be getting the floor replaced first.....I'm just on the wrong side of 100kg haha!

Superb car, superb roads, made for a car like this. I miss my MG very much. Just a question, when was this film shot? It says published 2 March, 2018. I'm lead to believe a good proportion of 'The Old Dart' is currently under snow as we speak, from North to South. I can't see any snow in site in this wonderful evocative piece. Cheers.

Hi Mark, it is a beautiful car, I want one of these even more after a ride in this one. It has been solid snow for the last week or so, this was shot late last year when the weather was good. As far as I know the MG is in a warm dry garage at the moment!

Hi Matt - yes I'd previously subscribed to your site. Have watched your V8 build in recent past. I must be on my sixth P6B now. In the 90s in London I had a Lunar Grey P6B and an April Yellow Series 1 P6B. Here in Oz in past I've had an NZ assembled CKD P6B, an Arden Green Series 1 V8, an Almond 3500S and my current is the aforementioned Monza Red 3500S. Talking of classics, if you look at the current issue of Classic Cars you'll see an article about the sole Armstrong Siddeley Star Sapphire Mk.2 prototype - this car is owned by a mate of mine in Wiltshire.

Thanks, I always appreciated everyone who subscribed, but even more so now youtube have put in restrictions for channels with under 1000 subs, so a big thank you!
Lunar grey is one of the best colours on a P6, Ive not seen a CKD P6 in person, I dont know of any that have come back. There are a few NADAs around which are interesting with all the extra kit. Id like to take a look at a CKD one day.
Ill check out CC later, thats quite a car to have in a collection

I am just waiting for my MGA to pass its Roadworthy Certificate, so it can be transferred into my name after purchase. Can't wait to drive it, it is red just like the one in this video.

I had one of these beauties 20 years ago. Loved every moment with it. I was driving on the BQE in New York City when i struck a bump, the only part of me that felt like it was still inside the car were my fingers clutching the steering wheel; it needed a little work but it was such fun!

I've not seen your site re the 4.6 into a P6. Are you from Practical Classics as I'm aware from that mag of a gent who is putting a 'large' V8 into a P6B? When in UK (1988-2010) I owned a host of Brit classics, Triumph GT6 Mk.3 and a Mk.3 with a 2.5 Litre 6 and a Triumph 2000 Mk.1 saloon. I also owned a very rare 1958 Riley 2.6 saloon. Then a jump back to MGs with a Downton Stage 3, MGC GT, followed by an 1973 MGB GT (V8) which started life as a humble 1.8 litre, owned from near new by an RAF English Electric Lightning jet pilot in the 70s. He converted the MGB after a few years ownership into a V8, using an SD1 engine and 5-speed box... he was an incredible engineer as well. it was the ultimate Q-ship as when I bought it in 2006 (in UK) it still looked like a bog standard 1.8, no badges, rostyle wheels etc. it always surprised the locals where I lived in rural East Sussex. I drove many more including Alvis, Jag etc etc. In my early years in London I discovered Rover, so owned P6 & P6B and drove many more. Since back here I've had a lovely early SD1 and currently have a 1975 P6B 3500S in Monza Red with Buckskin cloth, one of the last RHD export models. Cheers Mark

Thats quite a car list, bet you wish you still had some of them, the MG especially.
Im with Classics Monthly, but sometimes work for Practical - I shot this Chevy V8 powered Triumph 2000 for them a while back, now that was a project! He went through so many gearboxes, diffs and drive shafts till he found strong enough parts. He liked to Hoon.. ua-cam.com/video/J4QDJiF78i0/v-deo.html
Heres the Rover V8 build latest, Ive had P6s for years and wanted to do this for over a decade ua-cam.com/video/ftvOsIKdf4g/v-deo.html
Im going to be adding more classic car drives every week from here on, please hit subscribe and hopefully there will be plenty you like in there! ua-cam.com/users/furiousdriving

Beautiful paint job. Beautiful car. What a pity the bloody trade unions destroyed the British motor industry in the 1960s.
