what a FANTASTIC video. i have an older style bike like yours and it's been tough for me to find a video demonstrating the installation of a front rack for a bike with caliper brakes and a fork without eyelets. most racks are fairly pricey with no guarantee that they'll fit my bike so i really appreciate this demonstration of using materials from ikea
Great video. Good DIY. Sorry for off-topic but I have to state this somewhere and this is the most prominent spot: While watching this video I had to view 12 (twelve!!!) ads in between!!! This is hilarious.
@@ianmcmill what!!!!! that is crazy , how do they put even that many ads in one video??the video isnt even 12 mins long. sorry about that , hope you were able to enjoy the video
@@garysprojects There's an old saying "a craftsman is only as good as the tools he uses", but I think a craftsman who improvises without proper tools to make something is closer to genius. Cheers!
Thanks for the idea!! This will be perfect for my 90's commuter. Now you've got me thinking of adapting the bigger Pleja basket with handle for a quick-release shopping basket on an existing front rack....
I tried something similar with one of those cheap Wald baskets, same thin steel construction got it all firmly bolted and put some bungee cords over it. but the bs thin steel bends with bungee cords I spent a bunch of miscellaneous money that adds up on a hacked together POS ended up removing it and buying an aluminum tube porteur rack, from Public, like 50 bucks with all the mounting HW, the steel rack was heavy as hell too
Hey Gary, I want to mount my basket lengthways, but I'm worried the struts will be wider than the basket than mounting sideways like you have. Any ideas?
@@garysprojects True that. I was thinking also that it might work this way: each strut makes a triangle shape, with its tip comprised of both eyelets bolted into the same mounting hole. The base of each triangle strut sits up against the basket. Each triangle-shaped strut stays on its own side of the wheel and doesn't straddle the wheel. Does that makes sense? It felt hard to explain. Let me know if you can see any issues with that approach?
@@bbaggins3672 might be okay! I think maybe you might get a bit of side play since it’s dependent on how u hold the triangle parts but would probably work if you secured the basket strongly. Only way is to try!
Nice build. I just bought an old racing bike which I'm going to convert to a bike similar to yours. The basket too is very handy for holding skateboards. What type of handlebars do you have on your bike?
Ahhh nice! Yeah holds the skateboard pretty well I reckon. Has some side wobbles but not too bad at all. The sweeper bars are just off an old bike, I think u might be able to find on eBay for cheap! Hope that helps cheers !
Doesn't look like Ikea is selling these baskets at the moment but if you're in Aus the "Sandleford Chrome Display Basket" from Officeworks is similar dimensions
super late to this video. fantastic idea and great use of cheep prefab materials. I'm going to try to this out and Ikea still sells this part for $5. Gary, how is this rack holding up over time?

I was very nervous putting my brand new beach cruiser on this rack. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxG6JIgwJhur8_Rg8UeQ3EmePzi_wSncL8 But after reading many reviews I decided to get this one and take a chance. When arrived it was very simple to adjust and put together. I also added spike tape over the metal hooks before securing and tightening the straps, and no scratches. I also purchased the top bar made by the same company so that my cruiser sits straight on the rack without having to turn upside down. Extra bungee cords are used to secure the front wheel from flapping and even piece of mind knowing your bike is secure. Definitely recommend...
Better looking than most front racks out there 💯

Hey Gary, I want to mount my basket lengthways, but I'm worried the struts will be wider than the basket than mounting sideways like you have. Any ideas?
You would have to change where it bends, the basket will sit further away from the wheel if you shorten the width of the basket

The rods can be cut at will and joined with a small copper tube of the correct diameter and size by putting a little epoxy glue.
