How to Optimize Ranged Hunter Damage | Season of Discovery

- When your spec is not flavor-of-the-month it's all the more important to pump some big numbers to show your raid what's what.
Like most specs in season of discovery, what has performed the best has changed from week to week. Thus, keep in mind that this is true for week 3 of SOD, but may not be true for week 4.
The ranged hunter is probably going to get some tuning, based on their spot in damage output in every percentile. And since tuning is primarily done through the rune system, it's plausible that the favored rune build will change with incoming tuning.

It’s the same except we swap aimed shot for arcane shot
Nice guide! Just one thing, explosive shot doesn’t proc expose weakness, only white crits from melee and ranged can do that

I’m very minimal on addons when playing classic to have a bit more of that classic feeling. But the one thing I feel is a must on a hunter is a “swing timer.” I personally use a weakaura for it, but there are addons for it too.

Is the priority in the rotation the same for MM? I doubt we'll use aimed shot while raiding, right?
Right now logs using aimed shot are performing the best, but whether or not it’ll turn out being the best even with AP buffs or only outside of Rapid Fire + helm window is not crystal clear.
got the gun last raid, dont know if i should go mm or bm as orc hunter, because of 5% more pet dmg and whats the best rotation for mm specc?
Grats! Same applies as an orc, BM for personal dps, MM for overall raid dps. Rotation is the same but swaps aimed shot for arcane shot.
Hey, so I fall under the list of a Hunter that is outside the melee group. Should I still Run MM or should I go BM? Also thoughts on Lone Wolf, MM? instead of crit as the second hunter?
Yeah, BM is on average better then. When you’re geared up the waazo then MM will be better. Lone Wolf is not a dps gain at the moment, only viable for PvP imo

Hi, I’m wondering if as a full marksman hunter it is worth taking a wolf with furious howl vs a cat for personal dmg. What do you think?
Wolf would be for grp dmg, but cat for personal

right now pets do too much dmg for lone wolf to be any good in raids. I expect lone wolf to become better at 60 and maybe even 50.

Seen the new buffs for Steady Shot? 60% -> 75% weapon damage. Worth to switch out and add to the rotation? Could be a full meta change for Ranged hunters?
Steady shot is useless until we get a 3.1 or 3.20 speed weapon. We’re clipping auto shots with steady shot currently.
Still not worth-- even simming less which is assuming perfect play. That being said, haven't tried it in the raid.
Should hunters macro /petattack into all abilities or is this a DPS loss since the pet will keep switching between whatever target you are attacking?

I think that it’s generally a good idea to do so if you’re not super good at managing your pet. What little damage you may lose with pet switching targets is made up for by having your pet actually doing something.
What's the rotation with MM? Are you not using aimed shot?
Yeah we still used aimed shot in most scenarios. So same rotation, swap arcane shot for aimed shot.

I tried it last raid but I need to get a bit uses to it, with BM the rotation seemed more simple as the pet did a lot of dps but Marksman seems a bit more unforgiving as the rotation needs to be timed to not clip your autoshots. I think in my first try I did less damage than with BM despite being almost full BIS now
I've been looking for a grp for gnomeregan since week 1 as a hunter and never got into the raid yet, always ppl ask for parses (not even my pre bis gear are enough) then with my shaman i guild run and take some pugs (not even look on their parses) and we complete the raid every reset, all the hunter nerfs affected so hard in Phase 2, i remember in bfd phase i always was invited
100% , we where nerfed way to hard in phase 1 and its really screwing us now. I always said instead of nerfing classes buff everyone to that level. Hopefully with the buffs to hunters yesterday we can compete a bit more as ranged.

Yeah unless you find a group early in the phase it’s really hard to find groups during following resets. There’s still a spot in the raid for hunters for sure, due to lion, but it’s very rare that a group would ever bring more than one like they did in BFD.

Great guide. You only don't mention any of the alliance vs horde differences, which can be crucial.
Per example. On horde the wind serpent is much better since not only boomkins can buff it, but also enhance shamans with stormstrike (they stack).

@@Riyaniwow Yeah I also at first assumed it was the same debuff when I read about it. But they stack, so it's insane for any nature dmg dps class.

Theres no reason not to use wizard oil and an arcane elixir for combined 30 spell damage. Add that with the gbomer buff and you get 73 spell damage with no spell items.
Don’t forget oil on offhand ☺️

I like that you points out lion and trueshot aura right off the bat. Because those are the only reason you may get a raid spot. Otherwise the dps is to bad to warrant a spot..

It’s not a huge buff, but I think the buff is kinda insane for pvp. Lone wolf + chimera already crits for 1k+

Is this video taking into account about the buffs hunters are getting ?
Hunter
Chimera Shot damage increased to 120% of weapon damage (was 100%) and Chimera Shot Serpent Sting damage increased to 48% of Serpent Sting damage (was 40%).
Explosive Shot base damage done before Attack Power increased by 15%.
Carve damage increased to 65% of weapon damage (was 50%).
No it was made before the buff, but it doesn’t change anything more than that we’ll do more damage, and maybe making the spell power hunter a bit more viable.
We’re already running chimera shots in all builds.
If you have a 2nd hunter going with HOTL, how's Lone Wolf looking in comparison to the MM rune? Seeing alot of top ranks and below running the LW rune and their dmg is extremely good in some scenarios :) Thanks in advance!
Yeah after the buff Lone Wolf comes out a head if you’re geared.
