This is brilliant, it would take a year for my family to create enough shredded plastic from bottles and alike to fill a large dustbin bag. Then chuck it in the loft for added insulation!!

Hi! I think maybe the part of a MacBook its not pvc, I think this ABS, some domestic machines use ABS for de external parts, printers, vaccum cleaners and similar normaly use ABS, and looks like this piece
I have zero concerns about the nylon gear. The usual way they fail is with heat, which is not an issue in your shredder installation (as opposed to a geared hub motor for an bike, for example). Between nylon's ductility, the gearing ratio and the shredder's protection circuit (ie. reverses the motor if current is too high), I'd bet you'll wear out the cutters before the gear.
Makes perfect sense! I think the nylon gear is the "planned obsolescence". But as long as I don't run it continuously and lube the gear well, it should be fine. It'll be working a lot harder than it's designed for so the cutter may be out first. We'll see!
@@vuaeco If the nylon gear fails due to excessive loading, it will save other parts in the drivetrain from catastrophic failure, some of which may not be readily replaceable (e.g. the plastic "frame"). IOW, it at least leaves the _possibility_ of repair once the issue that led to the gear failure is resolved. I mean, unless the issue is a crazy man feeding recyclables into a paper shredder! :-) Even so, it's still better for you if the nylon gear fails before other parts...if you can get spares.
The moment you mentioned a plastic gear on the 120 volt motor the term built in Obsolescence springs to mind . .what a shame obviously that shredder has quite a bit of oh to it my thoughts are why would they limit it's life with such an obvious time limiter on its mechanical parts. If possible that plastic cog would have to be replaced in order to extend the shelf life
Well the real catch is how durable and how well does the shredder hold up? I used to have several shredders in my apartment, and I use them because of the fact I had so much paper material I had to get out of room every few days. Either boxes are just sheets of paper that the apartment management would leave on the door. I used to shred my material because of that took up less room and it was easier to dump when I did that. The thing about a lot of shredders is I noticed that don't die within three to four months of use. So the question is the cost-effective, does it last a long period of time, things like that.
I just came here because it seems like as good a place as any to ask, have you done any plastic welding at all? I just tried it today for the first time with a soldering iron and polypropylene yogurt, hummus and weed containers to repair the "bucket" (underseat storage compartment) on a sit-down electric scooter. Worked awesome! P.S. You're closing in on 40k subs...bravissimo! :-)
I have. I tried to weld a cracked plastic cap for my garden hose outlet. It was a total failure! I guess it takes some skills to weld a part that can withstand some water pressure. But I think for something simple, it shouldn't be that hard. I tried the Harbor Freight plastic welder and it worked well. Yep, I'm closing in 40K subs. Not sure what to make of that though! :D
@@vuaeco I'll be interested to see how it goes with other plastics, as my experience today with PP#5 makes me think it's on the easier end of the scale to work with. I tried melting a tie wrap thinking it was PP, but it was actually nylon which really stinks! The polypropylene smells like overheated low-temp hot glue, and melting it made some smoke, so doing it outside was a good choice. Forty thousand people is like a packed football stadium...you are clearly doing something right, comrade! ✊
@@fun_ghoul Me too, I tried with that tie wrap and it failed miserably. The hard part is to figure out what kind of plastic your part belongs to so you can get the right chemical for your welding rod. Different plastics have different chemical boding structures and they also melt at different temperature so mixing a PP with HDPE, for example, won't bond well.
@@vuaeco Agreed. I don't think I would have tried welding my scooter bucket had it not clearly been marked "PP", or if I didn't have some PP items laying around. Also, the scoot is not back together again yet, so I should stress that the welds' structural integrity are yet to be tested.

Yep, exactly what I thought: "planned obsolescence". But that gear can be fixed and replaced with a metal one if it fails.

The plastic gear might just be a "burn out gear" you might be able to get a replacement.

Put 2x8 stud or plywood on top of plastic and run over it with your car to flatten.

How did you cut the plastic bottle in half ?
I used an aviation (tin) snip. These bottles have thin plastic so I think you can even cut it with a pair of scissors.
