Shirley looks like she is having so much fun basically playing her friend. I can actually see perfectly in my mind Debbie Reynolds saying all of this, with the same expressions and inflections, etc, that Shirley is using.
I see Carrie in Meryl's portrayal too. You couldn't have found anyone better to play either one of the rolls. As much as I love The Apartment, this movie is now my favorite Shirley Maclaine vehicle. She's a true legend throughout.
Debbie Reynolds was always adamant that the book/film was NOT about she and Carrie.. but you can't help but see the parallels. Carrie clearly drew on some of her own life experiences.
this film has so many funny and true lines, especially if you've struggled with addiction. one of my favorites is when Shirley says to Meryl "you're only interested in instant gratification." and Meryl says "instant gratification takes too long."
It was hilarious when they talked over each other at the same time. Especially after seeing Carrie and her mom talk in the same room. They do the exact same thing.
She stole the scene after feeling out acted by Meryl in their first scene in the car. Great production & super cast. This film came in under budget & wrapped early. RARE.
I will make an interesting observation about this scene. The film was directed by Mike Nichols, who'd earlier directed Melanie Griffith in "Working Girl". Griffith one time showed up on set high, shutting down production and Nichols made her pay for the cost of the day's shoot, keeping it from the studio. And this is why we have insurance to cover the shoot.
I didn’t like that “Uncle Marty” absconded with her money off-screen later. I thought he was funny and believable in the role as Suzanne’s agent. He was married to Lucille Ball from 1961-1989, so he was a recent widower when this scene was shot.
I cant believe I never seen this GOLD! ...one of those things... and I just cancelled my netflix subscription. don't think it was there anyway, was it?
I don't think, so, it was written and produced and directed by Carrie Fisher, based on her and her mothers life together, it was a new York Times best seller and a Novel. Meryl Streep plays Carrie Fisher and Shirley played Debbie Reynolds. It was awesome movie. I don't think it's on Netflix, I remember seeing this movie when I was 9 in 1990 & 10 years old. It was a popular movie back then. Incredible performance by the greatest actress in the world Meryl Streep. You mite want to check Hulu or Rent it on DVD.
The title came to Carrie Fisher whilst she was driving, while she was writing a script about addiction for Richard Dreyfuss (who incidentally appears as a doctor in the movie).
Nominees were Whoopi Goldberg for Ghost Lorraine Bracco for Goodfellas Mary McDonnell for Dances with Wolves Diane Ladd for Wild at Heart Annette Bening for the Gritters Whoopi won, and as much fun as she was...it was not deserved..i would have dumped Mary McDonnell and put Shirley in her place

This film is so underrated! Carries script is just brilliant, she deserved an Oscar nomination.
Guess she got Kitbashed. And now you're Champaxed. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
This is one of my favorite performance by Streep. Underrated film.
Debbie Reynolds was always adamant that the book/film was NOT about she and Carrie.. but you can't help but see the parallels. Carrie clearly drew on some of her own life experiences.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies ever. What a cast! What performances! Shirley Maclaine, a true gem and legend just ROCKED!
It's one of my favourites too, I don't know how many times I seen it over the years.

It is unreal how similar it was. And then DEBBIE WANTED TO PLAY THIS PART, TOO???
YIKES
These two make the perfect couple mother-daughter on film. Meryl's face is hilarious when she says "what am I, a teenager?" got to love her
Rest in peace, mother & daughter 💖

Go in peace, Carrie Fisher.

Two of the greatest actresses of all time if not the best of all time
“No wonder I’m so hefty” 😂😂😂 I’m stealing that
"Wayward sag members" kills me every time!

RIP Carrie. ❤️
rest in peace dear debbie and carrie
The look at the end is genius. They bicker with each other but are cut from the same cloth when it comes to being annoyed with this guy.
Best. Scene. Ever.
One of my favorite books and movies.
Shirley looks great in this scene!

Good scene. I never knew about this movie until today.
At the beginning, you see a shot of the theater outside and it is showing Casualties of War, a good film.
And a great commentary on this scene
Shirley is seriously stunning in this movie!
.. this film was based on the lives of Debbie Reynolds and daughter Carrie Fisher
One of the best movies ever x
I can't count how many times I have watched this movie...
praying for carrie fisher!
The actresses did a great job but I can't help but to wish that this movie was starred by Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds
Gary Morton!

@@jimhaggard7436 And he died a few years later.
@@sha11235 I believe he passed away in 1999 at 74.
do you know what are the sunglasses called that meryl streep wears in this film?
I cant believe I never seen this GOLD! ...one of those things... and I just cancelled my netflix subscription. don't think it was there anyway, was it?
it's SOOOOOOO AMAZING!

This one to own. I've seen it dozens of times.
It's a great film. They play it so well, it is believable.
excellent 😆
Now looking back all mums and daughters have good and bad relationship s Carrie has forgiven her mum
coool!!
Such a fun movie. The uncle is Gary Morton who was Lucile Ball husband until she died.
Shirley Maclaine understands her role and is funny as hell.
"I don't have a generation." "Then I think you should get one." I never really got the agent's reply.
Me too.
Matbe its a child of a celebrity thing. They're sort of always on their own.
Robert LaRoche clip-ons?
uncle Marty reminds me of my mothers account who use to call me in to his office in Beverly Hills about my spending
Shirley Maclaine is great. That is all.
Yes. Shirley was always pretty amazing.

I found out that Jerry Orbach was going to play her dad but his stuff was cut out. WHY??????????????????
I normally don't care for Meryl even tho she a remarkable actress...I do , however love her in this...
Just noticed the Oscar Meyer weinermobile on the desk. You figure they would say something about it or pick it up.
Marty Weiner is the name of the agent.
@@JustinTanner1964 So that's why he has that on his desk?
Second only to Aurora Greenway this is Shirley's best performance!!!
Steel Magnolias is my favorite Shirley role
now you can be sure that he wouldn't have done that to John Garfield
I watched this and there were no postcards. Huh!?
Uh, it's a metaphor.
The title came to Carrie Fisher whilst she was driving, while she was writing a script about addiction for Richard Dreyfuss (who incidentally appears as a doctor in the movie).
My daughter doesn’t like it when I talk 😂😂😂😂
So funny when she says she doesn't have a generation. Like yeah you do, you're a baby boomer
Shirley stole this movie from Meryl. Great picture.
I wonder why Shirley didnt get nominated?
Probably because she lifted her skirt up in front of all those people.
@@c0t0d0s7 Why would that prevent her from getting a nod? But there were a lot of good roles that year for women.
Nominees were
Whoopi Goldberg for Ghost
Lorraine Bracco for Goodfellas
Mary McDonnell for Dances with Wolves
Diane Ladd for Wild at Heart
Annette Bening for the Gritters
Whoopi won, and as much fun as she was...it was not deserved..i would have dumped Mary McDonnell and put Shirley in her place
@@c0t0d0s7 She did not lift her skirt, it TWIRRLED UP!
@@joesibley03 And she wasn’t wearing any underwear.
I really hated Shirley's character
Meryl is far to old to play Shirleys daughter. She ruined the movue
