The Grey Funnel Line | The Longest Johns (by Cyril Tawney)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 жов 2024
- This beautiful and moving song was written by Cyril Tawney about his experiences of life and work at sea. It expresses the sadness felt at heading out to sea and the yearning to return again.
The video was filmed in Bristol Harbour on the wettest day we could find. We all got absolutely drenched and had a wonderful time doing so. If you want to hear this song more, it is available on our album, Written in Salt.

Can we please get a chicken on the raft studio version
Maybe someday :)
@@thelongestjohns We have the chickens if you have a raft!!
The Longest Johns Please
The Longest Johns also another thing that would be great would be a downloadable version of the “we all lift together” cover
Love the random birb just floatin’ about.
It’d a soft little melody I think, it calms the heart and soul to listen to
I'll take that as a compliment :) It's a beauty
@@thelongestjohns you guys are from Britain right? What’s your thoughts how covid has affected Britain and your area in general overall
I only started to listen to your songs about a week ago, but you already got me completely. When my brother showed me 'On the Railroad', 'Wellerman' and 'Santiana' in the kitchen while we were doing the dishes, I just couldn't get these songs out of my head. Now I have this struggle with all of them. I just love your songs!
That's amazing!! One of us... :)
I'm glad you like it ;-P
@@thelongestjohns gubel gable
Check out their Haul Away Joe, it's a banger! That's what got me hooked on them
shame you couldn't have gotten the Folding Dutchman on the lake...
Maybe another time!
The Folding Dutchman is no more. Broken down and sold for scrap
@@thelongestjohns Requiem in pacet
@@thelongestjohns Though your next ship may be strong and true, you'll always be the Milkmaids crew!
Don't mind the rain or the rolling sea
The weary night never worried me
But the hardest time in a sailor’s day
Is to watch the sun as it dies away
It’s one more day on the grey funnel line
The finest ship that sails the sea
It’s still a prison for the likes of me
But give me wings like Noah’s dove (like no one’s done?)
Ill fly above her to the girl I love (ill fly a bobber?)
It’s one more day on the grey funnel line
Each time I gaze the behind the screws
I wish I had Saint Peters shoes
Then ill dance on down that silvery lane
And rest in my true love’s arms again
It’s one more day on the grey funnel line
Oh lord if dreams were only real
Then id feel my hands on that wooden wheel
And with all my heart id turn her round
And tell the boys that we’re homeward bound
It’s one more day on the grey funnel line
I’ll pass the time like some machine
Until blue waters turn into green
Then ill dance on down then walk ashore
and sail the grey funnel line no more
It's one more day on the grey funnel line
Looked it up:
It is "Like noah's dove"
The other part is "I'll fly up harbour"
One line is "I'll dance on down that walk ashore". In the Royal Navy a gangway is called a walk ashore.
"I'll fly upon her"
I was literally looking through the comments solely for the lyrics. ❤
Anything which preserves Cyril Tawney and his songs is worthwhile. This is also beautiful.
34 years sailing the grey funnel line and still going.....loved this.
I love your music! I am so into history and your shanties give me a glimpse into the sailors who used to sing them. I love them and am stuck to you guys like glue.
More than merely adequate. [Grey funnel line is slang for the Royal Navy for those that don't know - and written by a sailor just before he left the RN in 1959]
Oh wow, learned something new today
Thank you longest John's for making amazing music. I'm kind of upset that I only found out about you guys a couple of months ago, but ever since my brother showed me Jollie Rouge and cruel wars by you guys I haven't stopped listening and singing along.
That one dislike is the ship, hurt by your words
@The Longest Johns I absolutely love all of you and your joy in what you do. I play Sea Of Thieves quite often with you guys playing the whole time as I sing along as I sail along, sometimes driving crew mates mad and enemy crews to treaties! You guys are absolute legends and I hope you guys know how great you really are!!!!
This made me wish I'd been born in 1769. I've always loved tall ships. Though I wasn't raised near any major body of water. I feel as though some things, some dreams, are just born into us
I'm only 23 but I'm like 70 years when I die, I want this song to play
Whoa this peoples are epic , i just found the perfect group
Would you ever consider releasing sheet music of your arrangements? A lot of school choirs do units on songs from the exploration age, and your songs would be amazing for young mens choirs to learn and perform!
It's not been announced yet, but we've been telling folks... We're putting out a book for Christmas
@@thelongestjohns May be the best news to come out all year!
@@thelongestjohns amazing!! Can't wait to get it so I can play all your songs on my guitar 🌺 you make great music.
@@thelongestjohns For the love of god please put the curse in there. It's one of your best songs, and it has the hardest to discern harmonies.
@@thelongestjohns nice
Carry on gents, you nailed it again. Fantastic!
Lovely. I saw Cyril sing this in a pub in Chichester in the late 60s, I really think he'd have loved this arrangement. Thank you gents.
Suitably mournful. we don't realise what distances and times away we oblige our troops and their families to endure
Absolutely. Such a beautifully written song
Thank you, my good sirs!
Our pleasure! Thank you for being here
This song got me through finals last month
The song I sing whenever I'm tired and homesick.
Nothing better than being on the fishing boat with this on bust in the way in from sea it’s nothing better
its good to see folk singing from my home town 😊
Superb Gentlemen!
Keep them coming.
Peter (Men Overboard) St Petersburg.
Many thanks Peter! Hope to see you again soon
This song hits just right
I first fell in love this song when Steeleye Span sang it. Thank you for a very lovely new version to hold in my heart.
Excellent work gents!
That closing was particularly adequate. Good work chaps.
Many thanks Martin!
Good to see the old mateys are doing well! Grogs up for your shanties!🍻
The Crew are amused and in High Spirits! Love the singin! Keep it up for the crews out there! 🍻
Absolutly amazing

First time I've made it to a premiere!!
Welcome! :D
UA-cam randomly suggested one of your Sea of Thieves videos to me a week ago. I don't even play Sea of Thieves but it still made me so happy. I spent the whole day listening to your music and watching your Assassin's Creed 4 videos, and I've sung along to "Wellerman" in the car several times.
I hope some of the songs you've sung in AC4 (that you haven't already recorded) might eventually make their way to an album. Rio Grande and Leave Her Johnny have become favorites!
After a long day of work this is just the right thing to listen to relax
That's great to hear, glad we could help
Beautiful
Brilliant as always. Have a fantastic day/night everyone. Cheers
This song always has me on the brinks of tearing up.. Great, I fell sad now :/ Such a beautiful song, very well done lads
you guys make amazing stuff and i wonder how u aren’t as popular as you should be
Many many thanks! We'll keep trying our best
Remember big things started small and grow with time 😁
Epic dudes its super cool!
I've never done a premiere before. Was fun to see everyone's comments! Great song and a really lovely location!
Hooray, glad you enjoyed it! It's always nice to be able to watch and chat along with everyone
Lovely tune and a nice video too. Feels timely what with most of us having someone we can't reunite with atm!
I think the chanties are one of the best ways to express emotions in music, chills from the beginning to the end of the song. Greetings from italy🇮🇹❤️
Fantastic as always chaps. Love the melancholic nature to this one. Also nice to see my work place in the background!
This song has always been my personal favorite. I grew up with AC 4 Black Flag and Sea of Thieves, shanties have always been my go to music. You guys are amazing and I can't state enough how much of am impact you guys make. Keep being amazing!
A very pretty song. Love from Texas.
Absolutely lovely, nothing more than is needed there just four voices in close harmony by the sea.
I grew up in the evangelical church in the southern US, and Southern Gospel music was a big part of that tradition, and going further back the shape note hymns of the 19th century which I believe drew on some english traditions in the 18th century also was a big part of the musical tradition I experienced. This is so much like that in the harmony and tune and general mood.
Fantastic, gents!
I got a few of you guys' albums on Itunes a couple weeks ago cuz I liked a few of the ones I've heard online. Every now and again I try a new one I haven't listened to on loop for like three hours, and this one was the one for today and it is quickly becoming a favorite. Beautiful work guys!
I don't know how many times I've listened the version with Josh that JD's dad recorded years ago. I love this song so much, this video is perfect for it. great job as always. (warm blankets after that)
I’m famous at last, so glad you enjoyed it, now for the real deal with professional video😊
That was amazing
This is the music video that popped up on my feed that made me realise I was listening to a Bristolian band, I perked up when I saw the background like "Wait, I know that place"
Beautiful and perfect backdrop with the Mathew!
This was beautiful and really what I needed to hear right now. Thank you for doing this.
Great work as always gents! A song request/idea from an Australian fan... (bound for) Botany Bay. Should be right up your alley or sea lane or whatever.
New fan, started with Oak and Ash and Thorn for some reason. Absolutely love these guys.
Good place to start from, in my opinion :) heard ashes yet? The Curse is good too. Well, who am I kidding, all their songs are brilliantly adequate
i cant get over how brilliant you guys are-
Tremendously +eq8! I think the dampness definately adds to the atmos.
I love this song, ever since I heard a painfully old recording that sounded like a car had run over it. It is morose yet hopeful.
Also, ive not seen Anna for a while, I miss her harmonies!
Dang you guys release great songs after great songs. Keep it up!
You guys are great
Really kind of you, thanks :)
amazing job. keep up the great work.
Thank you! :)
Finally at a premiere and its from my favorite album
Amazing job as always! I always love tuning in to listen to your beautiful voices. Thanks for brightening up many a day of mine. Bravo!
Love u
Love right back!
I hope your day is going beautifully today, The Longest Johns, thanks again for the absolutely beautiful music
Very kind of you, and yes today has been rather lovely! Glad you enjoyed the video
I've used your songs for a Bard in my D&D game before, and my players/GM love it. I hope you guys keep making amazing music and keep inspiring others to do equally amazing things.
That was just simply awesome. Grey Funnel is my favorite modern sea ballad. Thanks for treating it with such beauty.
Wonderful song. Can’t get enough of your music
Beautiful - and particularly poignant as we're stuck going back into half-lockdown.
Your voices are so amazing! I just got into your music a few weeks ago when I found your sea of thieves crew-sing video where you sang “wellerman”. Your music has been getting me through online schooling (as of right now, I’m a junior in high school) with a rough home life, and it’s also given me motivation to play sea of thieves again and embrace the inner pirate in me like my ancestors. You truly are an amazing group and I’m glad I found your music. Much love!
Working on my singing, I got this. But I'll probably never get as good as you lads.
Wow this is amazing
Another beautiful video guys! Always get excited when I see your notifications. Keep up the amazing work!
Thanks so much! New video every Wednesday :)
Love it
I don't know what it is, but the quiet ambiance of the bay in the back just catches me in the heart. Beautiful song, keep at it!
Time for Spotify. And to my schedule to wake up to this
Hooray :) It's on Written in Salt
I found you guys recently through a recommended video, and since then have not stopped listening to the songs on Spotify. They are just too awesome!
Holy crap, you guys are just awesome..... You would sound awesome in a chaple or church bc of the aucustics
Truly one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. 💛
Do you guys ever put out bad music?
No. The answer is no. Another great tune, lads!
Absolutely wonderful.
Thank you!!
Awesome work guys. very beautiful .
Beautiful as usual fellas 💙
Just want to say you lads are some fantastic singers and hearing your songs both calms me and makes me smile. You truly are a group of diamonds in the rough.
I'm obsessed with this performance. Gorgeous. Can you release the audio of this version on iTunes? The other studio version is lovely but this is next-level SUBLIME. drop the track and take my money! * _ *
I have yet to be disappointed by anything you guys have put out, and now I have a new reason to convert my friends into fans.
That's wonderful to hear, thank you
Looking forward to getting a job now because I can finally buy your merch
Not one of my favourites but the quality is still beyond amazing. Keep it up lads!
Absolutely beautiful, all the amazing harmonies mixed with the loneliness of the words make for a lovely video. Thank you for making this.
You deserve more subs and views, youre awesome
I've been listening to this song a lot lately: it captures a sense of loss, longing, and isolation that 2020 perpetuates. Thanks lads, you never fail to impress. Slainte.
Lovely. Well sung, gentlemen
This brought a tear to my eye, this song is so good
Chills... Just chills ❤️that was amazing
I was having a bad day and I finally get to relax and hearing this is just so wonderful. Thank you guys and for all that you do!
Pushed the like button even before i started the video, love this so much!
That's really kind of you, hope you weren't disappointed
@@thelongestjohns Never! it was quite adequate! :D
The singing always takes me out of my anxiety and makes me feel good and slightly sad which is good because I don’t usually have too many emotions I love this channel.. also the singer second from the left kind of looks like the main singer and trumpet player from the band cat empire
miles nevarez haha he does look a bit like Harry. Pleased to see another Cat Empire fan here :)
