    Thanks Kate. I love them. A few years back I made my daughters family a stocking each at her request. I did a letter ornament for each of the people in the family and added them to the stockings. They loved them.

    Home made stockings are wonderful. When my three children were small I made stockings for the 5 of us but I made them all the same size so no one would complain that they got a smaller one. They are now all grown and wanted to take their stockings with them when they moved out on their own. At one time we had a dog that found my son's stocking on the floor and when he smelled the candy that was inside he chewed the toe trying to get at it. I offered to make my son a new one, but he didn't want a new one, he wanted the one he had had for as long as he could remember. So I patched it up the best I could and he still uses it today (he's 37 years old). Then they wanted me to make more for their spouses and for each grandchild that came along. It looks like I'm done with stocking making for awhile, or at least until there is another generation! Thanks for showing us yours.

    When you held up the Christmas log cabin block, I suddenly was inspired to make a Block-of-the-Month (sort of) with a block for each actual month. Yours would be December naturally, and I could go all through the colors of the landscape in each month. It's for a gift. What fun! Thank you so much for your company, inspiration, and tutorials! A good UA-cam friend indeed. -Sally from MO

    Darling Stockings! What wonderful Memories will be made each year with them! I didn't have a mantle for many years....I often used a peg hook board in the wall. I also had a coat rack and hung Stockings instead of coats. I recently saw a quilt ladder with Stockings hung on it. I'll bet Owen and his family will find a spectacular way to hang them

    From bagmaking, I learned a tip for getting the lining to fit well. Increase the seam allowance by an eighth of an inch on the lining, and it will wrinkle less on the inside.

    • @beth12svist
      @beth12svist 11 місяців тому +2

      Oh, of course!
      Or in other words, if you're used to working with the stitching line, shave 1/8 of an inch / 3 mm off along the lining piece. :-)
      The principle is called "turn of cloth" in patternmaking, I believe - you do the same on lower collar pieces etc. All to acount for the fact that fabric does have its own bulk, and the "inside" piece will wrinkle and the whole thing will look uneven if you don't account for it. Even facings work better if you account for it (though there are various ways to account for it with more complicated pattern pieces like that).
      If you have thicker fabric - like a padded piece like here - you may even need to shave off a bit more.

    • @bookreader8655
      @bookreader8655 11 місяців тому +2

      @@beth12svist Interesting information. I just googled "turn of cloth" and read a brief article. It's something I never applied to quilting projects before. Thanks.

    I am not one to ever covet another’s good, but I believe I broke the 10 th Commandment today. Your Christmas stockings made using the Liberty fabrics are just stunning. I was drooling over your stash of Liberty scraps and that is when I folded and started to covet , on a Sunday . The strip quilting just showcases the beauty of each piece of fabric and I could not help myself. Mea culpa Kate.

    We have our stockings that we fill hanging on the mantle. But I also have a bunch hanging as a timeline: my childhood stocking made by my grandma; my husband’s childhood stocking; each of our young adult stockings; a slipper I tried knitting him when we were dating but I was new and didn’t understand gauge so it turned out stocking size; pretty ones I got for our first married home together; Army ones for the time we were both in the Army together; our daughter’s first stocking. Now I’m knitting one with Arne and Carlos for decoration, and maybe I’ll sew us new ones for the mantle.

      I also remember my Christmas stocking. My mother's sister, my aunt Judy, hand knitted the first of us six kids's stalkings and decorated them. Then my mother learned how from her and knitted the last two. Sadly, mine didn't last very far into adulthood because of a problem with mice and not having put the stocking up correctly😢 yours are so beautiful Kate, I would have never thought to attach them to batting like that and then quilt them. Wonderful idea! Merry Christmas!

    My daughter asked me to make a Christmas stocking for my grandchild last year - also with embroidery. To me the difficult part was the sewing, but I managed 🙂. I have to do it again next year, as my daughter is pregnant with my second grandchild, and now I'm looking forward to it. Next time I'll try with wadding too.

    Hi Kate, I don’t know how many times I’ve watched you make these stockings but I always enjoyed it anyway and I just wanted you to know that I did make them and I made three I believe and then I made a pillow. I did send pictures but I don’t do it very well. I’m just not good at it but I hope you got to see them, I could do it again if I knew how however I saw better than I use electronics even though I’m old and decrepit still going strong

    We call that “cross-stitch” and it is a very handy stitch.

    Beautiful stockings, Kate. So special and meaningful for them, even as adults.💕💕💕
    I made stockings for our daughters when they were little. (We still use those here!) Also, for our two grandchildren. I also made one for my husband (then boyfriend, 44 yrs ago💕), and for myself, and bought a nice one for our son in law when he joined our family. I was busy making our daughter and her hubby a quilt that year, so I needed to find a stocking quickly. But it still looks nice 17yrs later.😊
    Merry Christmas to you and your family!
