Our family just signed for one today. MY GOD this thing is good (2016 DEFINITE improvement over the 2015). We weren't even gonna look at BMW when we were car shopping between the lexus NX200t , audi q3, and mercedes gla because the only reviews online were of the 2015 x1. This thing absolutely blows the other 3 out of the water. It combines the comfort of the nx, high quality interior feel of the q3, and well... mercedes gla 250 was garbage so im glad the x1 doesnt take anything from that. Surprisingly little turbo lag makes this feel like its got a much bigger engine. 10 out of 10! Maybe extra half a point for the kicking thing that opens the trunk.
I love this car so much---I own it. It's perfect for me and two little ones. I love zipping around town ;) A little turbo lag, but nothing a software update won't take care of.

Resell and vaule for money are also important. It might be around 10k cheaper than X3 or X5 but how will it hold vaule after 5 years with 70k miles on the clock. X1 does look appealing as small SUV family car. Do you really have to own G wagon or X5? Or is it just about showing off how deep is your wallet and self esteem treatment?
The X1 can't tow a boat, you can't get a quick version, cargo room is much less than the X5, and although the X1 interior is nice, with a few options the X5 is simply stunning. There's also the fact that the X1 is FWD based, so it's not a true BMW in that sense, more of a fancy MINI. That's not necessarily a bad thing but it's worth noting.

Good review - this is massively improved. Though, I would twke a discovery sport or 5 door evoque over this. But I like knowing a Land Rover can go anywhere.
What is the ground clearance on this new x1? I read somewhere else thats it actually a few mm less than the previous generation , but you mention otherwise.

Looking into the datasheet I was very surprised to find out this car has the smallest gas tank comparing with other cars, only 50l or 11galons gas tank meaning the owner has to spend most of the time fueling the car instead of driving...The autor can mention something about that in his marketing... J
Clown shoe?, maybe. But don't forget many people liked and bought the previous gen. (Me included). I for one, don' think it's been all improvements with this new generation. There are tradeoffs. To name a few: fwd vs rwd and it now looks decidedly SUVish (generic mom-mobile). Nevertheless, it was a good review you made. You have now +1 subscriber

Don't know if you eventually got the car but BMW are known to be luxury and not reliable so your husband is good to be cautious. However the X1 doesn't seem to be that bad in reliability compared to how they do on their previous cars. BTW did you get the car? Is it reliable?
Hey MrTheSetter. Yes I think it would be easy to drive, there are lots of safety systems like auto braking if she's not paying attention, and it'll make her friends think she's cool. If you can afford it, go for it. I personally would give my child a smaller car to start with if its their first time, but cars are generally bigger in America anyway so maybe this is what you consider small.
No mention that the X1 is based on the MINI platform and is therefore primary front wheel drive? That's a bit deceitful, considering most BMWs are RWD and people expect that from the brand.

That's a significant change that means the engine is sitting side ways, and the vehicle isn't as sporty and dynamic as previous models. Potential owners need to know these things because everyone in America assumes all BMW's are RWD.
+Kev50027 put another way, the F-series MINIs (aka 3rd gen) have come UP significantly, and share engines, platform, internals, etc. with several BMW models now. The next Countryman will be a mechanical twin to this car. The new Clubman is on par with this car in terms of refinement and quality. Everyone knows that MINI makes the best-handling FWD cars, so really, "MINI underpinnings" is not a bad thing in this case. It's become potato/potahto.

Nice car .. Altho can't help feeling the dash looks just slightly low rent in places. I live part time in Thailand where this car will probably start at around 40k(2.2m)when it comes out next year. Does it justify the large price jump from an HRV?
I might end up with one of these if I can't get a good deal on a glc or a fully loaded gla from similar year. These x1 come fairly well equiped for the money, I just wonder how reliable they are as a long term vehicle

It looks like a BMW, it has BMW quality and refinement, but it doesn't have the BMW DNA ( RWD bias - more fun and 50/50 weight distribution - more agility, better braking , less understeer) - not a big deal for most people.
RecombuCars, strange you should say that x25 doesnt feel as fast as paper stats suggest. Most people on youtube say it's actually very fast. Have you tested an Audi Q3? Curious of your impressions of the comparably equipped Q3 and GLA.

It'll probably hold its value really well. I Agree about not really needing a larger car. Most people will do fine with the X1.

It's not perfect. But it's very good. I like it. If BMW did sponsor me I'm not sure they'd like me calling their old x1 a clown shoe.
