About the Engine: Sorry for not showing it, I didn't know if you'd be interested! It's the original 2.1L watercooled but rebuilt, not the Subaru Conversion. Also, make sure to check out our UPDATED van tour with all our new additions! - ua-cam.com/video/NqPubXZ0VMs/v-deo.html
A Porsche engine Would fit in there
That's right😜
This doesn't need more hp than stock. It's a proper death trap in stock condition. I would only drive one off-road.
I’ve had mine for 30 years with a normal 2.1 L motor ... I’m still alive so it ain’t no death trap... u just don’t know
@@steveburns6503 as long as you don't get into a accident...
"The engine! I don't feel the need to open that up..."
All the dads: v_v
Hahahahaha!
Love these older layouts. Your van looks like it’s almost new! Such a terrific find!
Very cool! My parents had a blue Vanagon in the early 80's. We spent a summer traveling around the western US in it. A bunch of states, 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 big dogs. Popping the top like we were sleeping in a tent in the woods. Fun times.
This is a really neat little van, seeing a lot of van life travels right now (getting quite inspired) really like the simplicity of this, the seat/bed set up looks great! Also 1987 is a great year! 😉🤩
Me too! I have been binging on so many van life tour videos just to get ideas...but they keep changing with each video! lolz!
"Little Red Riding Home" or "Little Red" first name that got in mind. Happy riding!!!
The van has aged well, still a looker +30 years later.
I jealous of the paint. Oh well, I'm going to list my on Craiglist today. Will let someone else fix some rust and paint (identical to this one but 89')
I’m putting that on a T-shirt to wear 🤣🤷🏻♀️
The exterior definitely looks pristine!
@@pathund6523 did you sell yours?!
I know right
My dad had one of these when I was little. Best camping trips ever ❤️
Love the name “Ruby”
This video is so inspiring because the van seems to have been so well taken care of.
It's so cool to see so many of the travel bloggers we have followed for years (back when we started travelling...) now getting into vanlife. I'm sure you'll love it! Plus when things change, you'll still have a home base when you do travel. It was the best decision we've made. All the best and stay safe friends!
Wow we had a van just like this. So many great memories! I love that van. Also had a baby to take camping also camped 7 months prego! You will not regret this purchase!
Thank you so much for the video it really brought back memories...
correct me if I'm wrong but I think I remember.. there is also a button for the driver's seat and the passenger seat that can swivel to the back so you have extra seat for people in the back if I recall..
Love this kind of content. Gets the daydreaming about vanlife and world travels going. Thanks for making this!
Good your man is a mechanic. Mine is a 1990. Love it. Make sure he flushes the cooling system as it is extremely important in these babies. (First thing my guru VW mechanic had us do-and bleeds the system properly) You’re going to love it! Following.
Yes! Thanks for the tip. I've been reading about the cooling system being an Achilles heel in these things and having problems with corrosion on the heads. Less than two years ago the engine was rebuilt and new heads installed. All the coolant lines were also changed and updated to the GoWesty lines. It obviously got fresh coolant at the time so we at least have a good starting point
I bought my vanagon almost 2 years now and my wife, dog and me are building memories on that magic box. You guys have a good looking westy there.
Grew up camping in the same year Westy! Definitely had its fair share of mechanical issues and the fridge was god awful, but it was definitely all part of the fun! Enjoy!
Haha, that pretty much sums up most other stories i've heard from Westy owners
Thank you for posting this video. Some of the best times and carefree time was when I was in high school and college. I owned a 1968 VW bus and later a 1972 VW Westfalia. Was free as a bird.
Congratulations guys! We also have a Vanagon which we rebuilt ourselves. Last year we drove from Norway to Italy and back, this way of traveling is so much fun. Good luck on your upcoming adventures. Greetings from Norway😊🇳🇴
That sounds like an amazing road trip! What year is your Vanagon?
Matt Ofstie My van is from 1986, one of the last ones made with the round headlights :)
Did you buy in Norway? How much did it cost?
Also, I like how you don't have to do much to the Westfalia because it was made specifically for that purpose. It's a choice made with great taste 👌
Thank you for the video!
Ya that's one of the things we also liked about the Westys. They're purpose-built and really well laid out to maximize the space in such a small vehicle
Woo-hoo! Congratulations on your new van guys, she's awesome and totally suits you!! Can't wait to see where you take her on the road! Cheers from Vancouver!!
I love this. I feel that I can breathe in this van. 🚐
I love the van, he looks like a “Willie” to me. Idk as soon as you said give name suggestions, Willie jumped into my head.
And since it's a German car, Willie could also be short for the German name Wilhelm.
Your Willy was jumping in your hand lol
Haven't seen this much perfect compact camper van design until now ❤️
That little toy van was soooo adorable!
It looks like it had a respray (the hinge of the sliding door has been painted), but it looks good inside. the fridge is almost always repairable, don't replace it, it will kill the original look of the interior.
It works on 12V only when the motor is running. on gas it might need a cleanup. So take it out and clean the burner. While it's out, turn it upside down for a night.
That is the sickest van, so retro !
hehe very much so
My girlfriend and I just got an ‘85 vanagon camper ourselves, manual 4 speed. She is just learning in it and it’s going better than expected. The gears can be hard to find, but the clutch is very forgiving! We put an aftermarket stove, sink, and fridge in ours. Now we need a freezer for the longer trips, and maybe more storage
Awesome, sounds like you have a pretty sweet setup! I also found the clutch quite easy to work in the few manual Westys that I've driven. But finding gears was like moving the shifter through a bowl of Jello. Though I'm sure it would become easier with a bit of practice.
Thank you for the van tour! I'm diggin that upper bunk although it would be tough to get up there without a stool or ladder. I can't wait to see how well it does on the first trip you plan in it!
I have yet to crawl up into that upper bunk. I think we'll manage to climb up ok with a little practice, but coming down for bathroom breaks in the middle of the night might be risky!
Nadine I watched you way back in the wow days I didn't know you were a van lifer now how awesome
Westfalia components are of the highest quality, and last very well. I had the high roof model of this van, with the stock 1.9 wasser-boxer engine. Bought it in northern Germany and drove it home to Ireland.
This is the EXACT van my dad had when I was a kid. Same color too.
This opening in the ceiling is incredible!!!
I love the van!! Can't wait to hear where you both are going for your first trip with it!
So far, this van has been my most favourite. It looks neat, simple but multipurpose.
I got recommended this video because I've been watching van stuff lately but I immediately remebered your voice from watching your Canada video more than 10 years ago lol.
So happy for you Nadine! I have dreamt of this type of van too!
I hope you have epic travels with it.
Much love x
Its a beauty!
thank you!
NICE VAN I HAD A 1970
N I'M UPGRADE TO A 80 s
NEXT YR FOR MY BUCKET LIST TRIP AGAIN
HOPEFULLY A 83
The VW Vanagon is literally my dream car, I really hope i can get one some day, though I am worried about their high maintenance hhaha
I'm sure you will get one, I have faith in you!!!
Really nice Westfalia, can't wait to see what you're going to do with it :)
wow I'm so early (6 seconds ago) ready to get inspired by Nadine again
same color, year everything! my dad passed and i inherited his van, i must sell and im bummed. youll have awesome adventures
this is really something i just got an 84 this week and the way you guys cleaned it looks like it came right out the dealer😂
It’s in great shape and good you can seat and sleep 4! The toy is a VW T1! They’re gorgeous but very expensive in good condition.
I'm so excited to see what adventures come with this adorable camper! Best wishes on your new endeavor 💕
aw thank you so much!!
@@heynadine yasss, you're welcome!
That’s exactly what we all need right now 😍
what is that?
tj 1911 A camper van to go on roadtrips around the country
you are great. Feel happy while using it. Greetings from Turkey.
Welcome to the vanlife!!!!! That thing is so sick dude! So stoked for your journey with the van!
Thank you! We're really looking forward to getting it on the road
These vans need to make a comeback. Would revolutionize the current van lifestyle.
I love the suggestion of Ruby Sue! That’s my vote!
I'm still a big fan of Ruby Sue as the van's name ❤😁❤😁❤
I love how it looks and it's just so inspiring and i think the name should be Ruby
Such an epic conversion! Love it 🥰
Nice clean Canadian Westfalia 🙂
The most important thing is that u both happy 😊
First manual transmission I learned how to drive was my mom’s 1986 VW vanagon. Easy peezy
Our fridge works perfectly on propane. The trick is to get it serviced (cleaned). Sometimes put a vacuum down the vent to clean it out. Then we use a camera rocket blower on the lower site hole to get enough air into the fire box. Theyre tricky little buggers but once you get the hang of it, theyre awesome.
We just bought a '81 Westfalia for traveling with our toddler!
I like the rear seat mechanism better than the later model. Nice van. Enjoy
I prefer the 3 way frig. So light on gas and so efficient. More strain on battery the 12 compressor frig.
When I first became an engineer I set out to buy a cool car. I went to see the Volkswagen GTI, but was captivated by one of their camper vans. But it was much more expensive than the GTI. I’m now retired and I’m driving around in a Winnebago camper van. Looking back and knowing what I know now, I wish I had bought the VW camper van then. Have lots of fun.
I have a feeling your mom was a full blown, card carrying, hippie. Am I right? This video is like stepping back in time in so many ways apart from the van. I really enjoying your tour and wish I had one just like it. Very simple but elegant.........and you've done a great job at making it feel very homey. Hope you've had some really fun trips so far.......and that you will share more. Oh....all you really need is a band around your head..........a bandana would do the trick! lol
My mom had one of these in the early 80s. It was cool 😎 AF
I love your positive attitude and great smile. Thanks for sharing.
Nice job Nadine, this woman could sell these vehicles, she seems to know what she is talking about in an entertaining way✌️❤️🇬🇧
Wat een mooie camper netjes ingericht douche prachtig jammer van de regen we zitten wel droog prachtig.
❤ 🎉 ❤ 🎉 ❤ 🎉 ❤
I think Rubeus Hagrid would maybe be a good name for a red van🦁🦅🦡🐍
My boyfriends parents had one many years before and the kids loved it.
That was a great tour. That van looks like it was taken care of well. Good luck on your van life!
Maybe I should get a van... It sounds like so much fun to have a "mobile travel station" like this. But then again, I want to travel to more countries than just Sweden so it'd just sit and collect dust most of the time.
Being in the EU you could ship a van across the water and travel all around Europe in a van! I think van life in Europe would be awesome since everything is less spread out compared to Canada or USA
@@mattofstie9298 True, but then I always have to weigh that against the time spent driving through Sweden and Denmark to get anywhere... It's just such a boring ride to get out of the country, and a couple of days gets lost immediatey...
I CAME HERE TO COMPARE THIS VAN WITH THE ONE THAT CHAD HAS IN LIVING THE VAN LIFE? Both great vehicles
I'm a fan of Chad too... ❤❤❤

Yay! This is so amazing! Obsessed with the colour of this van! Super stoked to see your adventures in this bad boy!
First time being here!! Thanks for sharing!! 👍💕stay safe and blessed!! Nice channel!!
Returned last year to Western Canada with my 1991 Westy ( 400k km, ) from two years in Europe ( 40k kilometers ) shipping to/from Halifax N.S. to Liverpool UK, and through the Chunnel to Dubrovnik. Anyone with serious aspirations in doing this, and maybe requires ACME 3/4 inch propane tank converters for UK and Europe, or info, you can contact me. Great video and accurate...propane fridge can generally be fixed. $1,000 new fridge + conversion to Solar etc. Coleman inflatable bed pump helps for fridge starting problems.
Had a 72 type 2 camper, always wanted a vanagon model. Just have to convince my wife to let us buy one. 😆
Love that color on Westy's
These vans age insanely well. My father's Westfalia is a 1986 model (basically the same as this but white exterior with darker grey seats) and it still looks/runs great.
Ha, my westie is a 1986 and its warranty was issued on my birthday in 1987. The van chose me for sure.
1987 is a great year, was tempted to buy a van this year too, decide to just rent one again to help out the local rental agencies.
Love the T3. Those are the Best lookin VW from T series im gonna buy one to soon.
Simple but elegant...stay Blessed
It looks so clean like it could have been kept in a garage it's entire life. Sweet ride hope y'all have great travels in it. Are you planning to use for full time travel/living or trips?
1987! The best year
Absolutely love it!
You sure seem to be a pleasant person. Such a natural calming vibe to ya.
really loveee your pop up van great choice guyyyyyyyssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i love the way she speaks ❤️
Love the van. I think Rosie would be the perfect name for the van
Wow i have a 1973 double cab baywindow named Rosie after my late mother, i have a lot fun in it hear in South Africa
Nice car for long trip.i love it
Great paint job! And very clean on the inside. You guys scored with this van! See you on the road. ✌️
I'm feeling old now, I was 12 in ,1987 lol. Those were the time
Like the color! I'm glad the engine is water-cooled. The air-cooled variety does tend to stuff up quite bit...... well, out here in Australia at least. Oz is mostly a hot place, not suited to VeeDub motors!
Thanx for sharing. Parté ONNNNN!!!!!
looking goood, lot's of small things to fix but i'm sure by now you made it all work, will watch the other videos.
That van is AWESOME!!
How tall are you? Cause it felt like it's the most spacious westfalia ever.
You can get shoulder strap rear seat belts. GoWesty has them. The passenger side one is a quick bolt on. The driver side requires you to cut through the closet. Use a high tooth saw and tape the cut to keep it from chipping.
We had a Westy, wish we never sold it. Have a Boler now. FIX THE FRIDGE! Once you get used to using propane, you'll book unserviced sites all the time. It's like getting every 3rd or 4th night free. Propane is probably the most efficient way to run your fridge and you can camp in far more campgrounds. FIX THE FRIDGE!
I have almost the same model - 1987, metallic blue, with air conditioning.
For the van name, you can also use the name we gave ours, "Vanna" :-)
Beautiful colour . She looks like a Poppie 💜
this is really awesome but the thing is if there is that enough space in the last part of the van and besides this, you also have second bed space on the top ... you should fix a little closed commode area with a door on the backside of the van because if you are on a long trip .. this would make a full package... I am also looking to buy a van like this after Chad & you guys
Wow that's a lovely clean bus..wishing all the best on your travels ..
