On the contrary I am thankful that mass effect is allowed to rest and its name is not dragged through the mud further than it already has been by Andromeda.
Difference I've noticed is that negative reviews give concrete, direct examples of why this or that aspect of the game was poorly designed: from combat, story, dialogue, characters, etc. Positive reviews just give general, broad statements that could be applied to anything: Return to form, greatest cast of characters, thrilling adventure, etc, etc.
@@jakobrenner2230 I hope people learn something from this game: that EA being a big publisher already sold their soul to the woke mind virus. (thus suffers from the diversity hiring practices of only hiring people based on whether they are minorities not on merit alone) If Elon Musk's game company takes off I would recommend he start head hunting the talent behind the older Bioware, and seek out other talent that can match the talent of previous creators of the past inthe Xbox 360 era. What Elon could do is make his own equivalent to Bethesda from the Skyrim period of time. Try to compete with Microsoft for the open world RPG title. The guys that left Bethesda can work for Elon Musk on his games. With competion it causes companies to do better. But so long as they get corporate welfare from Blackrock there is no reason to try hard now. That is what is killing the gaming industry in the west imo. (with the exception of companies like Larian) Some good news today: Xenoblade Chronicles X port is finally coming to the Switch. I am so happy for that. Now all the Xenoblade games are on this platform. I will be busy playing JRPG for sure. I have lost a bit of faith in the western RPG scene for now. (at least until Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is out)
I want to put here what I put in another channel, which are my thoughts 😂. Something that I liked a lot from Matty and Skill up Reviews is that their analysis were very complete, they spoke about everything, while showing examples of each thing they were describing for good and for bad. They talked about everything I wanted to know and more. Mortismal review, while it wasn't bad, it was mostly focused on gameplay and nothing else. His review wasn't very deep at all. There were also some things that he mentioned as good or as no problem at all while for me were important red flags. If you analyze their Reviews, tho, you can see that they're saying similar things, it's just Mortismal dismiss some of the red flags as nuisances, and he technically says, it's an Action RPG, it's what it is, and it is good. It all depends on what you are seeking of Dragon Age, an Action game that lacks quality in writing and story telling compared to its predecessors is not what I, personally, seek of Dragon Age.
My thoughts exactly. I believe the dumbin-down of PC RPG is a curse that happens when a company is no longer run by the developers and the publishers take over and start to dictate to the developer what they are ALLOWED to make. This causes the developers to be slaves to a trend in the market and must compromise on their artistic vision which then leads to a team that is not happy working on the projects anymore. Larian broke from that problem. It's why when BG3 came out we saw all these articals sayings this was just an anomaly and we should not expect the triple A companies to make games as high quality as Baldur's Gate 3. (this was them signaling they were utterly terrfied of Larian) EA and big publishers in general care about the bottom line. At the end of the day, if they think making a game for normies and woke activists is where the money is, it may be time for the guys still working at bioware to move to new company like Warhorse where being non-woke is a badge of honor. The reason I say this is the curse exists and once enough employees see this pattern that we older gamers see, they will save themselves so much time. The other alternative is gather together a team of people who are sick of the pattern to make an indie game studio to create those old CRPG games of the past for the audience that prefers the likes of Dragon Age Origins over the new action RPG stuff. By doing this you can have total freedom to create the game you want to make. Then reward fans of your games for helping to spread the word about the games. Fans are like free ads for your games and help boost their awareness in the game community and spread your name across cyberspace to get the word out. One game in particular I am looking forward to is Wayward Realms. (Daggerfall spiritual sucessor) I am more a fan of the pen and paper style of gaming where the game is more player-driven experiences (adventure as a simulation) vs character or story-driven experiences (think most sony triple A in-house games where you are stuck hearing people talk in CG custscenes which interferes with gameplay - these are story-driven experiences and often referred to as "movie games" because Sony insists we should put our controllers down and watch a movie rather than play the f*cking game lol).
The Guardian newspaper gave it a 3/5: "Dragon Age: The Veilguard review - a good RPG, but an underwhelming Dragon Age game. There is lots to do in this huge and beautiful fantasy world, but inconsistent writing and muted combat dull its blade"
I actually really like the Guardian review. It wasn't reactive, it didnt' feel like it went out to bash the game and managed to express aspects of the game that were more important for my own experience.
Take notes on all the youtubers giving this game glowing reviews of over an 8, its a self admission that they are willing to take bribes and should be ignored from here on out. This has been a total demasking of shills.
Yep. I've unsubscribed from a whooooole lot of accounts I discovered were community panel members. Didn't even need to research, I just watched their behaviour towards their subscribers devolve from grateful for the views to promoting dogpiling depending on their hype level for this game. I'm not rewarding that shite with any kind of engagement.
What I found interesting was that Mortismal called it his game of the year and best game in the series in the same review where he literally said it wasn't an RPG.
I’m fairly certain he has gone on record to say that the only dragon age he really fucked with was inquisition, and he def doesn’t have any connection to the franchise.
@@stochho8513 I think it's best people just don't have hope in anything from EA because the big triple A publishers will never be like Larian. They dumb down games on purpose on the belief that it will make them the most money. This game is a textbook example of that. If you like old Dragon Age Origins style of games then you need to look to indie game developers and fund those guys. It's a dead genre.
Itf fairly consistent. Veilguard is just Inquisition 2.0 . More casuale combat, less rpg mechanics, less heavy choises. With that in mind and his take about inquisition being superior to DAO review makes sence
@@Assassin4408 Yep, I was actually fine with his review. It told me what he liked and why, and made it clear that for me it's not worth picking up until it hits $10 on Steam. It gave me the kind of information I needed to make an informed decision.
@@Lemurion287 yeah kind of a pain season for DAO fans now. Honestly i wouldn't even cared if they didn't shoehorn Morrigan into the game. Her addition feels just empty without the rest of her story and character growth
Mortismal Gaming also said that Starfield was AN AMAZING game. For a guy that plays games for a living, and has experience with RPGs I couldn't believe that statement for a second.
Dude, Mort is the equivalent of CNN of YT reviews, and if CNN had actually have integrity and almost no biases Expecting that he will say something harsh or trash the game he reviews isn't productive. The dude literally goes "some people will say to like this new system, some will hate it, I’m more of in the middle, even tho I enjoy it, it has some flaws" and you expect some edgelording or hyperpraise from him? He might say amazing about anything, but then acknowledge the flaws, and then go "and that's all the time we have". That's why I personally watch Mort, he explains systems and story structure and everything else well enough and in detail enough, while staying mostly generically unbiased as possible. He is my go to "honest review", at least so far.
@@Sm28291 I haven't seen Matty's yet but I find that surprising too. Shill up not living to his reputation must mean it's so awful he doesn't want the bad rep fallout. Like cyberpunk.
Yeah it doesn't make any sense if you pay attention to his review and everything he describes just sounds like an average arpg with some mass effect styled companion interactions.
He actually listed most of the same issues matty and SkillUp did - poor writing, lack of roleplay, etc. He said the "story is good for an arpg", but doesn't hold up to crpgs. He just doesn't find it as upsetting as the more critical reviewers
@gfjungle He liked Inquisition. He was OK about the other two. But yes, his opinion of Origins is the lowest...ever, basically. Mort's review makes sense when you remember: 1) He has no emotional attachment to the franchise. And 2) He's been a Diablo ARPG junkie even longer than he liked CRPGs. In a real sense, he's the guy Veilguard is made for. People who like CRPG stories, but ARPG gameplay.
Skillup's review was devastating. It may be possible to say it will be what ended Bioware. I predicted him doing this. Austin was his undercover superspy.
Look, Ralph already burned all of his goodwill with gamers who still have a brain after his cyberpunk review. So whatever he says I just take the the exact opposite.
@@TheZealo. Exactly this, and Matty too. That's what actually made me pay more attention to those videos, they are actually backing up their claims. Unlike the rest. The others are technically just saying 'The game is cool".
Omitting Fextra, Woflheart, ACG, Luke Stephens from review codes is enough to give anyone pause for concern. All these high review scores feels like they are just screaming "check cleared" or praise for the "soft modern" writing that, although it can have some of said time in the sun via a character (your Zevran, Alistair, Varrics of the world), it looks like they turned that to 11 with every single character. The game just doesn't have any stakes or dark themes anymore..everything looks so high fantasy and it's bothersome for me as a massive Dragon Age fan since Origins. Mortismal's takes on the game itself feels like it wasn't written by him, because he barely criticized the game and calling the game his personal GOTY in a year with so many great games came out (Wukong, Metaphor, Silent Hill 2, Stalker 2 on the way) is just baffling to me. Calling it the best in the franchise is what drove me to write this paragraph, because that's just objectively wrong..the best Dragon Age game is Origins + Awakening and that's not an opinion that's a fact, because that was the game that was the supposed spiritual successor for BG2 and the last proper modern CRPG that Bioware released. With that said, I am going into this with extremely low expectations because those 9/10 and 10/10 feel extremely fake. It's just sad to see that this is where this great franchise ended up..to have characters with normal voices and quips that you hear in everyday life. The writers have seen way too many Marvel, Pixar and Disney slop, because it shows.
Lord Darkhollow; I don't think Mortisimal has ever been very critical. His strength is his work ethic and 100% not his in depth criticism, that said, his review was very suspicious.
More time does not like origins. He didn't find the Dragon Age series until after Inquisition released, and thought Inquisition was the best one... I can excuse poor taste, but I agree that his review feels bought and paid for. I said this when they all got flown out to california. I unfollowed all of the channels that did that except for autism. But hearing his lack of criticism today, and heaping praise, he's lost all of his Integrity as far as I'm concerned. I have no more use for his channel and I unsubscribe
@@spellandshieldEverything is a conspiracy with you people. Doesn’t it get tiring? Just wait for more reviews then if it’s so suspicious. But noooo, you need grift as much as possible to pay rent lol.
Skill Up genuinely provides some of the most balanced, comprehensive reviews without all of the noise and associated political stuff - I’m not saying that’s not important, but that’s just not his channel. And when he brought the receipts, it confirmed my very worst fears. This is an insulting, infantilizing game. And it won’t get a penny of my money or minute of my time. I have too many fond memories of origins, awakening, and DA2 - and even inquisition looks like a masterpiece next to this
Yeap, people need to learn how to "let go". I made my peace with Bioware after Inquisition and Andromeda. I won't be sad if in a few months we heard that EA was closing the studio.
You know, If Matty, a person who loves DA, and is usually super positive etc, gives this game such damming review, something is really wrong. This seems like good game for Arpg fans, bad game for RPG/DA fans. And even the action part got scorn from Skill up, and how repetitive it was, to point where he went to lower difficulty because enemies were just health sponges, not hard, just taking ungodly amount of time to kill. My prediction is that DA:VG will lunch to positive reviews, and then slowly shift to mixed on steam. Or if it has technical problems, launch to mixed already.
exactly im baffled that even mr matty review was really negative ( his preview previously was kinda positive) but he criticized the writing and dialogues quite a lot ... and from what im seeing its really bland ( also the choices look you agreeing all the time to everything with different tone
Exodus sounds like the next mass effect because it apparently has the old BioWare members. People should stop holding onto company names as if those are the people who made the good games of the past because loads of studios have let go the people that made their games good.
100% agree! Imo, it should be regulated that no company or team should not be able to keep the same name once a majority of the team is no longer the same as to prevent people being successful by standing on the shoulder of giants whilst pretending they are the very same giants. Doesn't have to be too crazy. Just enough that we can all see that it's not the same group of people. Perhaps a version number on all branding. For example, in BioWare's case, at this point they might be "BioWare7.0".
I've looked at two positive reviews from small UA-cam channels, and noticed that their channels have been 100% devoted to Dragon Age: The Veil guard for months.
I would trust people who have devoted their entire channel to the dragon age series far more than people who only fondly remember dragon age origins tbh
My opinion on Mortismal dropped somewhat since his "review" of Veilguard. You can see all the posirive ones were combed through and fixed and I can't trust people who blatantly lie like that and the fact he had the gall to say it's the best Dragon Age game is insulting. I don't care if it's opinion or whatever, it's still a review and you're supposed to be somewhat objective in those in my opinion
Owlcat for me are the epitome of a rough diamond being better than a well polished turd. There is a hundred things wrong with the pathfinder games, the combat is grindy and repetitive, there's far too much mindless buffing, the secondary activities (kingdom management etc) are fucked. But for all that there is a passion there that has you come away with the feeling you have been on an immersive, magical adventure with a gang of unforgettable companions. Give me that over proficient but unimaginative fast-food slop anyday.
Apparently, there is a trend of many of the reviews saying this is "return to form" word for word. It wouldn't be surprising for a script to be given to reviewers. Mortismal review strikes to me as extremely dishonest (maybe confirmation bias on my end). He gives no examples of parts he enjoyed or any detail. Just the unhelpful "i liked it." Skill up gives more detail and examples on his grievances. Such everyone telling you to complete their loyalty mission. missions.
Yes I watched Morts review and it felt extremely fishy. Entire video felt off to me. Might be because that trailer that turned my hype around so i just expect it to be bad, but a sudden GOTY for a game im not even planning on playing anymore is extremely surpring from a reviewer that usually has the same taste i do.
This is all confirmation bias. I can guarantee that had he said the game was garbage people would be throwing his name around like Matty and SkillUp - who are now super popular despite being called shills a week ago. If you want to hate the game, Mortismal is bad bought and sketchy. SkillUp and Matty are brave and honest.
@@miossid Are you still under the impression that GOTY awards are fair and equitable competitions indicative of a games quality and popularity? It isn't. GOTY means nothing.
@@smithynoir9980 I also don't think audience reception either is indicative of a game's quality. There's a lot of underwhelming games being praised to the sky and really good games that are thrashed by immature gamers in their usual tantrums because of meaningless reasons. I only trust my own impressions.
I had a review vid recc'd to me by a channel I didn't follow (I do now) and I feel like this guy really cut to the heart of what this game is. Here's the bit that stuck with me: "My prediction is that there are going to be two games that Veilguard will constantly be compared to, one in terms of gameplay and the other for tone. On the gameplay side of things… Veilguard’s combat and exploration are full-blown God of War 2018 worship. This new Dragon Age is all about the action: building up a rage meter to release an ultimate, getting your perfect parries in, shield throws, talismans that activate special abilities, plenty of pots to break and chests to open. You get it. Point is, somebody really liked God of War 2018 and said “why don’t we just do that, and be done with it”... The other comparison I think people will constantly make, this time in terms of the game’s tone, is to that Guardians of the Galaxy game from a few years ago." I didn't play the GOTG game, but I can see where the comparison comes in. "Light-hearted action" was the vid's (quite generous imo) summary of the game, while also making the point that everything that made DA stand out has been cut. Previous game choices don't matter and the dialogue feels like it was written by an AI trained on Whedonspeak with no regard for context.
RIP to a legend, I hope this allows the zombie to be put down finally. Exodus to be the new MassEffect, and hoping Larian does something to be the new DA series.
Mortismal Gaming is weird. His whole gimmick is "playing games 100% before review" and yet his videos are always so insubstantial. If I didn’t know any better, and someone told me he just reviews games after playing the demo, I'd believe it.
His gimmick is why his reviews are insubstantial. If you have to 100% a game before reviewing it, you have to like it otherwise you would stop playing it. Unless you had unbelievable amount of mental strength to 100% games you hated. Mortismal has very low standards and as a result will think any slop is good enough, which is why his reviews are shallow and for anyone with a critical mind, worthless.
As I said a lot to others, The gaming community is split, millennials and then the now older gamers such as myself. We prefer harder, gritty, more heavier styled gaming in our RPGs (dragon age origins ME series, KOTR, morrowind, etc) and the younger gen prefer fast paced bright and Pixar/marvel like games such as overwatch. As time goes on though I feel we will eventually be forgotten about and games that we love will become a thing of the past. And that’s painful for me to say. I truly wish we remained a niche hobby since anytime something becomes mainstream, it corrodes
I don't feel this has much to do with age? I'm sure a teenager today could appreciate the art style of say, Ultima Underworld or Syndicate. There's just a total lack of exposure. Even though I don't like the art style of Overwatch, I do feel like it's art was a positive influence in the industry overall. Not in the sense of being Pixar-like, rather just showing big studios and publishers that you can still make money without pursuing realistic visuals and art. As much as I like dark and gritty art more, I firmly believe that arcade style gameplay needs clear visual communication and that's where colourful and clean art comes in. That said, Fortnite really pushed this Pixar stuff *a lot* and it has done exactly what CoD4 did before it: influencing developers to use trending art styles in IP that doesn't necessarily warrant it.
Mortismal sold out a while ago. Was a big fan from before he had 10k fans. Noticed he was deleting any negative comments on his Flintlock videos and never looked back !!
I really didn't expect SkillUp's take on it, I honestly expected him to carry water for Bioware no matter what. I guess that was the last push I needed to cement my decision not to buy this game.
I’m very disappointed in with the lack of agency in the game especially with us being able to choose our Faction, Class, and Race I was hoping that we would have more opportunities to add depth into our main character. We still have many good RPGs coming out so I’m not too upset but still very disappointed.
@@spellandshield Probably not. I was really looking forward to the game because I thought the Roleplaying was going to be well done, but if that’s not the case then I don’t really see a reason in getting the game. If dragon veilguard does do well financially I still hope BioWare can do what capcom did with resident evil 7 since it feels like BioWare is in a similar position they were in, but I won’t hold my breath on it.
@@spellandshield I still need to watch her review, but I was expecting for her to like and honestly I’m glad she enjoyed it but I’m not really as interested in the game anymore. We still have many other things to look forward to.
I have always enjoyed Mortismal reviews and he was always a trusted reviewer for me but this one review has broken any trust I had in him. There is a saying that it takes a lifetime to build trust but a second to break it. Such a shame. Good vid as always.
IF you take into account that Mort does not care about art, story or writing very much then his conclusion MIGHT Be understandable and also, when is he ever very critical? Every review is good to very good. His thing is his grind and 100% but even granting that he should have caveated the glowing recommendation more with check out other reviews and wait until you spend 60 euros. My 2 cents.
@@spellandshield The thing that broke that vid of his for me is the game of the year comment. Him also doing 100% just says the length of this game because every dragon age so far you couldnt get 100% in one run due to the choises. Just saying.
ShillUp being the honest and balanced reviewer was NOT on my Bingo card, I have to say that I'm extremelly impressed. Also - is there anybody who hasn't made their peace with Mass Effect at this point? It was dead ever since ME 3's ending, I love the series but I don't want it back EVER, not unless the IP changes studios and they retcon ME3 ending straight away.
The game looks awful, in terms of combat, storytelling and it's artistic choices. I hear lots of reviewers saying it was "repetitive" but still claim it's a "blast". Interestingly the Guardian only awarded three-stars. Matty Plays didn't like Starfield, I trust him over Mortismal who said Starfield was a "great RPG and an easy recommend".
Matty plays did enjoy starfield when it launched what are you talking about? he said the game was good but overhyped in his review a YEAR AGO. He didn't change that review until a few months after launch and on its dlc
Fextralife hit the nail on the head saying that alot of his community said theyed wait for reviews and after that became the most common response to the game everyone slightly critical of the game got removed from the review copy list.
Marr: “How can you know I’m self-censoring?” Chomsky: “I’m not saying you’re self-censoring. I’m sure you believe everything you say. But what I’m saying is if you believed something different you wouldn’t be sitting where you’re sitting.”
Which is ironic because the only reason Chomsky is famous (i.e. "sits where he sits") is due to his utopic communist ideology which is loved by left-leaning "intelligentsia".
Yeah Mort's review has caused me to unsubscribe to him. His review just completely misses all the criticisms that other reviewers had. It felt very disingenuous and apologist for flaws compared to other critical reviews.
Mortismal suffers from massive recency bias. He always said Origins was the worst, basically because it’s the oldest when he finally played through them.
Rogue Trader gives you so many ways to dispose of your companions including handing them over to the Inquisition. In one of the romance quests, you could either order your servant to execute your lover or you can do pronounce the death sentence and do the deed yourself. Owl cat has their heart in the right place.
In fairness to the upcoming Mass Effect: it’s narrative lead is Mary DeMarle, of Deus Ex and Guardians of the Galaxy, and former Bioware directors lamented Andromeda’s ‘intentional CW feel’ to the writing. So there is a grain of hope.
It's okay to let go of studios that used to make some of your favorite games but have fallen over time. We can be thankful for the games BioWare, Bethesda, and Blizzard gave us in the past. And as you said, there is always new talent, and new studios who are hopefully not corporate-owned who will be making great new games. I too am excited for those that you mentioned.
This is one of those times where being right doesn't feel good. I never understood how so many people don't seem to get that the people who made Bioware great are all long gone. I know S&S here has talked about it, and so most of the people reading this understand that, but the gaming masses? Bioware, Rocksteady, Bethesda, even CDPR and Obsidian, those are just companies. Not all of those examples are "lost", mind you, but they are companies, and it's _people_ that make games. When those people move on, for one reason for another, and the replacements are all untested, inexperienced, and (maybe partly because of that, for some of them) afraid of being hauled off to HR for some "microaggression" nonsense because they dared to say something needed to be fixed or improved, they can't do their best work, or even improve. It's a recipe for failure. That's why I'm so down on AAA gaming these last few years. They've created the conditions for their own demise, and that's why I'm not sorry about it, but I am sad and disappointed, because it didn't have to be this way.
Bioware become too big to consistently take the risks that got them to that size. I love the fact you gave InXile and OwlCat studios a shout-out, very well deserved. I have similar feelings towards BioWare as I do for Blizzard, basically a shell name by now. I'm waiting to read the articles from the talent at BioWare just going to other studios or forming their own (like Black Isle to Obsidian did before them). Let's see what happens. I have to play the game myself before assessing what Skill Up and Mort said, I do not want any outside impression to affect the ay I see any of the two, but I have to admit SkillUp did a really good review and covered a lot of things I feared could happen with the game.
Oh, boy. Heads are gonna roll release day. Of course the game is being leaked already and the reaction to the leaks puts into perspective how completely disconnected the reviews really are. I mean the pre-release dialogue alone makes any claim of good writing a false statement, the leaks are even worse.
I bow to your wisdom my Lord, you were right about one I was SURE would be neutral to negative. The rest, well, except for the obvious Cult Of BioWare shills I was surprised by several. The footage that's new absolutely cements my decision to never buy this or another BioWare game again. I'm so sad. I REALLY hoped I was wrong about this game, but I was actually more right than I thought.
1:15 Man, you are so deep into hating this thing. People can enjoy stuff you don't. I, for one, hated many games people (critics and fellow players) praised and liked games people hated, so I have no reason to doubt Mort's honesty (given his reviews were always coherent). I believe most folks nowadays are too infected by a hive mentality wrt to how the view their hobby (both positive and negative biases).
Btw, most of what Mort praised was the mechanics side of things, so maybe that is actually engaging? Also, just look at this comments section: an eco-chamber hive of people who didn't even play the game.
The zeitgeist has been pushing against Veilguard for a while. Notice how Mr Matty went from a very positive preview to a very negative review. This is the internet eco-chamber doing its thing. I never trust any reviewer who always sides with the eco-chamber since I myself very often find myself disagreeing with it.
Are you finally seeing what Bioware/EA has done? To the nine hells with them. EA, like always, devours passionate game studious and absolutely runs them to the ground. They have been doing this FOR DECADES. Since the early 90's. WHEN WILL PEOPLE LEARN?
Pandemic Studios was when I started hating EA. They did everything in their power to ruin The Saboteur, but Pandemic fought to release it (even if it wasn't the finished product they envisioned).
I really respect mattyplays and skill up for being brutally honest about their negative opinion. Being some of the only early access reviewers to give a negative opinion is probably not easy. But they’ve earned my respect for there honesty in the face of a large company that could take their access away.
I knew it. I KNEW IT! That first reveal trailer was 100% accurate to the tone of the game! I KNEW IT!!! RIP Bioware. EA, listen to me: give Mass Effect to Respawn. Don't let it die with these bozos.
It seems like they just went further into the direction on Inquisition and it that game just ended up not being for me. So for me, I'll be sitting this one out as I can tell I'm not the intended audience. It's probably healthy to not be so attached to studios/series and be willing to move on from them when the time comes. Have other games to look forward to, main one being Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
I couldn't finish DAI, the slog factor was just too high and I abhorred the writing. "The Inquisitor" was barely a character. Also, 100% agree about not pledging allegiance to corporate entities. I concur with OP's recommendation of Owlcat's current portfolio. It's old school, which I personally like. Lot of reading, but the writing is excellent. I'll look at what Larian does next. Not a huge sci-fi fan, though.

I can not take overly positive reviews serious because of the terrible writing I see in every single clip of the game. If a reviewer tells me the writing is good, but I can see on my screen this is not the case then either they are lying or have awful taste. It seems like an 'okay' game. I would predict something like a 7/10 right now. Not a good Dragon Age, but a decent casual RPG. It's currently in the top 5 of the Steam top sellers, up from last week's place 60 so I guess the positive reviews helped.
Imagine playing Mass Effect 3, 2 and 1in that order................. that's where Mort gets his view from I imagine, Although I've heard he was paid to review Unknown 9 too and was one of the 200 people who actually liked that game................... 🤣🤣
@@KratosisGod I'm tired of it as well, you just cannot trust any gaming company anymore or game critics since they are getting paid off to say positive things and give a good score.
@@Macheako the only reason I’m playing it is because Origins and DA 2 are two of my favorite games ever so I have this strange need to personally see how Failguard destroys Dragon Age and I plan to make a video craping on it
The only two consistent data points I've noticed are these: (1) People who say they had one play through last 60+ hours tend to score it really high and say that they loved the story, connected with the characters, found combat engaging, etc. And (2) people who say they had one play through at less than 50 hours or multiple play throughs at 40ish tend to score it much lower and say the story is disappointing, they don't like the characters, and found the combat repetitive. It's a chicken and egg problem: Did the people who took longer to complete one play through play the game in such a way that they got more content or context, or did they take so long because they were already enjoying it and so sought out more things to do? Did the people who finished it in a much shorter time miss things, or did they dislike it so much they deliberately skipped or rushed things?
I just want BioWare die so they can't ruin Mass Effect beyond the already dealt damage. I'm sorry for bringing negativity to your channel but that is how wounded my soul is right now.
From the look of it if you want more of a Action RPG like the new god of war games you may like the vailguard if you want something more in line with the older dragon age games it might disappointed you. Even mrmattyplays said that the ending is very good, so I can see how some aspects of the game can resonate with people differently. EA holding review copies is just shameless.

In essence:
Negative reviews - written by disappointed human beings.
Positive reviews - written by AI "give me a positive review of DA: Veilguard".
@@jakobrenner2230 I hope people learn something from this game: that EA being a big publisher already sold their soul to the woke mind virus. (thus suffers from the diversity hiring practices of only hiring people based on whether they are minorities not on merit alone)
If Elon Musk's game company takes off I would recommend he start head hunting the talent behind the older Bioware, and seek out other talent that can match the talent of previous creators of the past inthe Xbox 360 era.
(with the exception of companies like Larian)
Some good news today: Xenoblade Chronicles X port is finally coming to the Switch. I am so happy for that. Now all the Xenoblade games are on this platform. I will be busy playing JRPG for sure. I have lost a bit of faith in the western RPG scene for now. (at least until Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is out)
Matty and Skillup gave some detailed reviews that answered a lot of my concerns for Veilguard
Matty has no fking clue of whatever he "reviews".
(this was them signaling they were utterly terrfied of Larian)
EA and big publishers in general care about the bottom line.
(Daggerfall spiritual sucessor)
I am more a fan of the pen and paper style of gaming where the game is more player-driven experiences (adventure as a simulation) vs character or story-driven experiences (think most sony triple A in-house games where you are stuck hearing people talk in CG custscenes which interferes with gameplay - these are story-driven experiences and often referred to as "movie games" because Sony insists we should put our controllers down and watch a movie rather than play the f*cking game lol).
The Guardian newspaper gave it a 3/5: "Dragon Age: The Veilguard review - a good RPG, but an underwhelming Dragon Age game. There is lots to do in this huge and beautiful fantasy world, but inconsistent writing and muted combat dull its blade"
That's actually a very balanced take guess not all journalists are shills.
The true fan came out of that journalist, you know he could not lie blatantly about something he holds dear. Sad times.
I actually really like the Guardian review. It wasn't reactive, it didnt' feel like it went out to bash the game and managed to express aspects of the game that were more important for my own experience.
Let's get one thing said. No dragon age game is a 9/10 since origins. Leave it. Try another franchise. This one's been dead for almost 2 decades.
"RPG" lol
truth be told owlcat is looking more like old bioware then anyone else i loved the interactions between the companions for rogue trader and wrath
there are 2 thrones of RPG now, old-age and new-age, one is taken by Owlcat and other is taken by Larian.

Mort has lost me forever.

Dude, Mort is the equivalent of CNN of YT reviews, and if CNN had actually have integrity and almost no biases
Expecting that he will say something harsh or trash the game he reviews isn't productive.

@@EasytheGoonIf someone like Mr Matty starts pointing out flaws then you know the game has problems.
I was baffled by Mort's review. Game of the Year?
Yeah it doesn't make any sense if you pay attention to his review and everything he describes just sounds like an average arpg with some mass effect styled companion interactions.
He actually listed most of the same issues matty and SkillUp did - poor writing, lack of roleplay, etc. He said the "story is good for an arpg", but doesn't hold up to crpgs. He just doesn't find it as upsetting as the more critical reviewers
he also apparently hasn't liked a dragons age game before
the dude is such an obvious sellout shill its embarrassing
@gfjungle He liked Inquisition. He was OK about the other two. But yes, his opinion of Origins is the lowest...ever, basically.
Mort's review makes sense when you remember: 1) He has no emotional attachment to the franchise. And 2) He's been a Diablo ARPG junkie even longer than he liked CRPGs. In a real sense, he's the guy Veilguard is made for. People who like CRPG stories, but ARPG gameplay.

@@jakstheoneandonly you're right, I'm gonna trust ign and eurogamer, they sound 100% legit
ACG has been in the out with most companies because of his honest and technical reviews so that doesn't surprise me at all.

Its called being paid under the table.
Exodus sounds like the next mass effect because it apparently has the old BioWare members. People should stop holding onto company names as if those are the people who made the good games of the past because loads of studios have let go the people that made their games good.
I always say this.
It turned out exactly as I thought it would its an average action rpg.
I've looked at two positive reviews from small UA-cam channels, and noticed that their channels have been 100% devoted to Dragon Age: The Veil guard for months.
Yassgirls reviewing their Solavellan fanfiction could be expected to shill for any yassified DA title
Yup, completly true... thats why i'm not believing this content creators. To biased with the game...
I would trust people who have devoted their entire channel to the dragon age series far more than people who only fondly remember dragon age origins tbh
Yeah most of the girl gamer channels do this. And that's their entire channel. And usually they focus almost exclusively on the romance crap
Those channels come from the tumblr fanbase the game was built to pander to.
RIP Bioware .. I will always cherish BG1 and BG2 , but those people are long gone anyway
Owlcat will become better in time, more polished.

Just the unhelpful "i liked it."
Skill up gives more detail and examples on his grievances.

I had a review vid recc'd to me by a channel I didn't follow (I do now) and I feel like this guy really cut to the heart of what this game is. Here's the bit that stuck with me:
"My prediction is that there are going to be two games that Veilguard will constantly be compared to, one in terms of gameplay and the other for tone. The other comparison I think people will constantly make, this time in terms of the game’s tone, is to that Guardians of the Galaxy game from a few years ago."
I didn't play the GOTG game, but I can see where the comparison comes in. "Light-hearted action" was the vid's (quite generous imo) summary of the game, while also making the point that everything that made DA stand out has been cut. Previous game choices don't matter and the dialogue feels like it was written by an AI trained on Whedonspeak with no regard for context.
For me Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age Inquisition were decent endings I'm okay to move on. RIP BioWare.
Especially the extended cut endings of ME3 where Shephard actually survives.
RIP to a legend, I hope this allows the zombie to be put down finally.

Inquisition doesn't have a decent ending, it ends in a cliffhanger.
ME3 has closure at least.
Skill Up's review is the only one i need to watch!
Mortismal Gaming is weird. His whole gimmick is "playing games 100% before review" and yet his videos are always so insubstantial. If I didn’t know any better, and someone told me he just reviews games after playing the demo, I'd believe it.
They are basically very milquetoast.
Oh well back to Space Marine 2

Interestingly the Guardian only awarded three-stars. Matty Plays didn't like Starfield, I trust him over Mortismal who said Starfield was a "great RPG and an easy recommend".
Mortismal also took money to promote Unknown 9 Awakening.

Tis sad, but true!
EA was handing cash, or bags full of goodies recycled trash for these reviews.
These companies/ journalists believe we gamers are idiots.
Absolutely.
EA probably found some illegal porn on Mortismal computer.
Otherwise I just cannot explain his review.
Well, BioWare left, but Larian and Owlcat stepped up, so I guess it's not all bad :D
After Starfield I’ll never watch, or trust, another Early Access (i.e. paid) review.
I know this is going to sound "pessimistic," but I will continue to hold the belief that everything after DAO (and its DLCs) is tumblr fanfiction
I meeeean, DA2 was decent for what it is. A game made Basically over the course of a single year.
Skill Up's review is very detailed: It's an abysmally bad game with good final two hours. But the combat is NEVER good.
I'd love to see how Larian might have made DA 4.
I'd love it if they could buy the IP unfortunately EA is a dragon sitting on its pile of treasure
bioware already fucked the lore.
Bye bye Bioware
Appreciate your balanced view.
Mr Matty got my respect on that review!
There is a contraversy there, he seems to have leaked the game before the embargo. He might get sued by bioware

Unfortunately you're right, it was made to mold their little brains.
I bow to your wisdom my Lord, you were right about one I was SURE would be neutral to negative. The rest, well, except for the obvious Cult Of BioWare shills I was surprised by several. The footage that's new absolutely cements my decision to never buy this or another BioWare game again.
I'm so sad. I REALLY hoped I was wrong about this game, but I was actually more right than I thought.
kinda mixed bag but still hopeful until i try this game by my own and looking forward to your impression of the game!
Cheers!
Mortisimal lord of 100%ing and consoomer of slop.
@CleverCodger Bullfrog for me.
I really respect mattyplays and skill up for being brutally honest about their negative opinion. Being some of the only early access reviewers to give a negative opinion is probably not easy. But they’ve earned my respect for there honesty in the face of a large company that could take their access away.
Matty might have been the one to leak the game.
Sports Illustrated gave it 6/10 and was brutally honest about the game flaws.
I knew it. I KNEW IT! That first reveal trailer was 100% accurate to the tone of the game! I KNEW IT!!! RIP Bioware. EA, listen to me: give Mass Effect to Respawn. Don't let it die with these bozos.
Absolutely man. Everything they’ve done since has just been “Public Relations”
Mass Effect died with Andromeda.
@@ThriceGreatHermes-c6p Dragon Age died with the Archdemon.
Least someone has some credibility left.
Mortismal Gaming saying its his personal best game in the series is mindblowing
It’s over boys
Good riddance and about time.
Off topic but did you see rebel wolves publishing announcement

'Millennial writing' nailed it
I feel like this game was meant to be a Fortnite players first RPG.
looking forward to your impressions
If I get this game, it’ll be when it’s on a discount sale
It's already discounted lol.
Imagine playing Mass Effect 3, 2 and 1in that order................. that's where Mort gets his view from I imagine,
Although I've heard he was paid to review Unknown 9 too and was one of the 200 people who actually liked that game................... 🤣🤣
It's like the flop with the last Saints Row, all over again

Dragon Age is #4 top-selling game on Steam right now. I am not surprised. It really shows how low the standards are now-days.
I wasn't looking forward to playing a Disney film, but it seems that's what we got.
"...up until [the last 2 hours] it is a slog." DAI Hinterlands war flashbacks 😑well, all of DAI really, which is why I never finished it.

Mr patty surprised me but yall gotta remember it’s all opinions man you’ll never know to you try it yourself their is also people who liked it
I just want BioWare die so they can't ruin Mass Effect beyond the already dealt damage. I'm sorry for bringing negativity to your channel but that is how wounded my soul is right now.
Let the living dead rot ... the light shines elsewhere.
