I listen to this fine, fine preacher now, & since just after my believing in the Lord Jesus Christ in 1968 and read all his writings he left us. I have re-read much of the books, passed extra copies off to other saints, they as enthused as I was. It is this man, also very much Albert N. Martin, and Chas. Spurgeon...these three (and my Bible, yes,) profusely, and they, in their preaching led me to the great Puritans, others. I plunged into my Bible, soon found these good men so I had good teaching to begin with. I thank God every day since for them.
A most concise, succint exposition of a vital subject for all Christians. We give YOU all the Glory LORD for Dr.MLJ's faithfulness to your plan and purpose for his life in Christ Jesus, and for giving him the gift of expository preaching, that we YOUR adopted sons and daughters may understand !
"least of the gifts" does not imply that it is of lower worth. Speaking in tongues is communication with God, which makes the effects on a person's soul very clear - 1 Corinthians 14:2,4. The speaker is edified tremendously. If I couldn't pray and sing in the spirit, I'm not sure where I would be. One should experience this gift to know the sweetness that comes out of it. Without this magnificent gift, you won't be able to survive in a country like India with such a toxic spiritual atmosphere, and I can't thank God enough for it. When I didn't know what to pray in my troubled times, my spirit took control and afterwards, such peace and joy from the Lord filled my heart. Apostle Paul said I would that ye all spake with tongues - 1 Corinthians 14:5. Praying and singing in the spirit will elevate you into a higher realm in the spirit and I can guarantee you that this gift can help a depressive person out of his/her trouble.
read the entire chapter of 1 Corinthians 14, Paul repeats over and over that uninterpreted tongues are virtually useless unless there is interpretation the gifts are given to edify others, not for yourself
Please pardon me but having read your comment, it seems to me that you place a bit too much emphasis on 'experience' rather than 'a' Person, the Lord Jesus Christ, Who keeps us, being the great Shepherd of the sheep and in Whose presence ..is fullness of joy. Sorry but there was, I felt, something in all you wrote that didn't sound quite right to me... God bless you 🌺
so you rely on your tongues and not on Christ? that's bordering idolatry... putting your trust and hope in a gift rather than the gift giver... "elevate into a higher realm of spirit" yeah that's called gnosticism.... sound like the same nonsense new agers like to say
36:00 - 37:59 - This is were he speaks on tongues the reason for the conclusion comes just before, and explanation after. 43:00 - Peopple can hypnotise themselves.(44:45)
To make it easier for you to read, copy this; I have endeavoured to bring guiding Truth from Gods Word: not just a comment but actual teaching that many do not know. Our brother Martyn, made a mess of this. He was a very good expositor of Gods Word but he went in to this subject, without being grounded. He was not grounded in Gods Word here. I suppose I could highlight the importance of being taught by God, having a readiness to receive, from the Spirit of God. It is written in the Old Testament, in Isaiah chapter 28 reading from verse 9, “Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.” The Jews have a ceremony called A Bar or Bat Mitzvah, this is a coming of age ceremony for Jewish boys and girls at about twelve or thirteen. This marks the transition from child to adult. To be weaned from the milk and from the breasts, is to stand in faith with reliance on God, wanting to be in Gods way. The mature Christian walks by faith alone. But the most of us, faith is mixed with our carnal understanding. 1 Corinthians 2: 14 says “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” The lost natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God. But also the saved child of God can mar spiritual growth by leaning upon his own understanding; not quite understanding the mind of God in scripture. Isaiah chapter 28 verse 9 again “Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.” For the Jew, before Christ it was faith in God, for them now it if Faith in Christ and for us Christians; Paul for us, writes “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2: 20 Only reading Gods word by faith, with and expectancy to be taught by the Holy Spirit. Can we be delivered from doctrine pitfalls. Yet again from Isaiah 28 Verse 9 “Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. verse 10, For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: verse 11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. Verse 12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.” Clearly God was going to speak a word to Israel to bring rest and refreshing but we are told, “…yet they would not”. The last verse from this portion in Isaiah is verse 13 “But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.” God knew they would refuse to learn of Him, in this way. The Jews had no excuse, a line concerning their savior is in Isaiah chapter 53, they knew about all their offerings verse 6 “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Clearly to Israel a person was to be sacrificed, to be made an offering. And verse 10 says, “Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.” There was another line in Psalm 22 revealing what happened at the death of Jesus Christ. Verse 1, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?” Of course If he is going to be to sin offering God must forsake him.” The Jew could have compared the day of crucifixion with this Psalm, 22. Verse 14 says “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.” Verse 13 “They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.” They say in verse 8 “He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.” The lord in verse 16 said, “For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.” The Jews should not have missed this: “…they pierced my hands and my feet.” A picture of being crucified. And again in Isaiah chapter 9 v 6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Truly “…the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” 1 Corinthians 2 v 14 Isaiah chapter 28 vs 11-12 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.” Come now, to the Church of Corinth, 1 Corinthians chapter 14: this chapter is putting right a mess they, had made, about the gift of tongues. After putting thing in order and stressing its more important for the Church to understand what is being said, verse 19 says, “Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.” In verse 20, Paul writes, “Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men. In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.” The Corinthians were brought to see from scripture the why and reason for the gift of tongues. God speaking to his people Israel and saying “To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.” Now that, they were brought back to the truth, which, these believers must have already known and now, we know too. This verse, verse 22, let it be a seal, to this newfound truth. “Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.” If Martyn Loyd Jones had this unchangeable truth in his mind as a foundational fact. ( A foundation I say because you can’t change its reason for being in the Church; It’s steadfast unmovable. Tongues was given by God to be a sign to the Jew. ) He would have preached a different message, one, according to truth. It will help you all to know that the word unknown, through this chapter is not in the original. You should for example read verse 2, this way, “For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” I don’t know why the translators put in the word; tempted to help God out I suppose! With the word ‘unknown’ taken away it is easier to see the direct line from verse 2 down to 22. Yes! Israel’s sign - God speaking of rest and refreshing. He wanting to show his kindness to them. One last point, if you look into this chapter you will see three groups of people: the Church obviously and Israel, equally obvious. Now after reading verse 16 you will see the third. “Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?” The Corinthian believer spoke the language of Corinth and so the unlearned one. God spoke to the Jew in his own language using the gift of tongues. Gather your thoughts quietly receive The Holy Spirits instruction. There is freedom in resting in Gods truth, even if it has exposed a great error. This causes a great problem for what we see, gazing across our whole world now, this tongues business, is from the evil one: an enemy hath done this… Chris Barry…

Unfortunately not ! MJL has missed completely the context. Here speak a man , who is nearly there but hasn’t got it.
The best teaching I have ever heard on this subject
One of the best teachings on this subject! Praise God!!
Wonderful teaching, thank you for the upload.
Really clear teaching on the gift of tongues!! God is glorified, not man, in the true gift of tongues!

Interesting. This is the first time I’ve heard a reformed preacher hold this position.
The beloved Doctor wished to see Christians open to the work of the Holy Spirit and baptized in the Spirit.
Proper and insightful. An excellent sermon as usual.
I have struggled with speaking in tongues and what it really means for years. Dr. Jones (no relation) explains it in a way that makes total sense.
Wonderfully Explained
I kinda had my doubts about speaking in tongues but this explained it perfectly and I understand now. Thank you very much and God bless you
Wonderful teaching I have never find such a teaching any where
Tongues are a beautiful intimate time with the creator
36:00 - 37:59 - This is were he speaks on tongues the reason for the conclusion comes just before, and explanation after.
43:00 - Peopple can hypnotise themselves.(44:45)
(12:10) - different "kinds of tongues"; (14:10) - explains "kinds of tongues" are human languages.
Does anyone know the name of the tune sung here.. please? 🌺

Great preacher. I wonder if he ever tasted pizza....
How did you arrive here with a comment like that?
Very sad.
probably. he died in the early 80s. pizza began to be popular in the UK after ww2 after an influx of italian immigrants arrived
