  • Inspired by the giant 400 year old Cotton tree in Freetown, Sierra Leone, I'm trying to create a miniature replica of this tree, from seed with my Kapok (Cieba pentandra). I also show an update to my Silk Floss tree.

If I remember correctly, these, when growing on the coast, can get so iconic that on some oceon maps these are marked landmarks. That was a massice speciment !

I can see why that's your favourite tree. What an amazing huge tree. Such a shame to see it fall but at least it's still alive. Your one is looking really good and who knows maybe someone will be showing it and saying it started life in the bonsai zone 400 years ago.

Yes, such a grand tree, I'm glad there are lots of photos of it!!! I hope I can get mine to look close to the original tree some day!!

It`s a shame that beautiful old tree got damaged, but it looks like it's recovering. I hope it'll grow back strongly, and I hope yours will also do well!

Love the tragic story of the big Kapok and truly gives another dimension to your own "hardship" in the species. Really fascinating and great looking trees and hope to follow yours for years to come.

Thanks, I think as long as I don't let it get cold, it will do well!!

Great story of survival! Hopefully they keep the original tree with it's story. I certainly hope yours becomes a dream legacy for you!

You’ve single handedly got me into Bonsai. I’m very partial to Kapok and Acasia trees and while I understand they’re not the best choices to work with, I’m thrilled for the chance to bring their beauty into my home.

That’s a great story of how a tree can come back from a tragic storm. I hope yours grows well this summer!

    Nice "Paineiras" Nigel
I took a cutting of my ceiba and now the cutting is full of thorns while the mother plant still did not got any. i found this quite interesting, like something environmental made the cutting get older faster than the mother

Oh man I'm so sad about that tree! It looks absolutely silly being completely surrounded by Road like that.
Well I finally did it and put some tree seedlings outside from last year and it took one night for the critters to get to them and who knows if they're going to survive. The one thing I was the most afraid of. The one thing that stopped me from ever giving it an honest try. All of my little Oaks and Maples, some critters late night snack. Chewed up the wood and pulled them out of the soil :(

Nature creating it's own bonsai. Grew the tree out, and then pruned it back. It gives the tree even more mystique. Hopefully it survives long into the future.
    Look forward to updates!

Very sad when an old tree is torn asunder from a storm. At least they saved the trunk and are letting it grow.

Those trees don't do well where I live now, Tampa Florida I think is about the cut off on their hardiness.

Would it be possible to grow one of these indoors year around you think?🤔

Might survive, but most tropical trees will only thrive inside if you add lots of artificial light.

I think so, they do need a lot of light, but a sunny window should be fine!!
