  • Here is a quick rundown on the 5 things I think Yamaha could have done better on this bike. Overall the 2021 YZ450F is an amazing bike! These are the smallest little annoyances and I truly believe this is the best 450 made and I couldnt be happier with my purchase overall!

    The yz450f is not designed for trail riding, that’s why there is no spark arrestor

      Agreed. I dont ask for a spark arrestor, simply an easy option to put one in should it be required. It would also help with repacking the silencer when that day comes.

    Its a motox bike, it dosent need a spark arrestor. The stock silencer is really good, buy an aftermarket slip on like an FMF if you want an arrestor. Dont be lazy, remove the glide plate to change the oil. Cable clutch is light, reliable and cheap. The YZ dosent need a hydraulic clutch. Stock chain is a good quality D.I.D good for 40 hours. Learn how to tighten and check your chain properly and lube after every moto. Brand new chains have side flex. Stock fuel tank is bigger enough for at least 3x20 min motos. I usually top up after 2. You can't do motox and trail riding with the same bike an expect it to be good for both. Stick to one or buy a second bike.

    • @westkrider1132
      @westkrider1132  3 роки тому

      Thanks for watching the video! I understand your logic. However it is also a dirtbike. The point I am making is that you shouldnt make a machine so discipline specific that it gives you no options. Most riders who buy a motocross bike will trail ride from time to time. I dont want a spark arrestor from the factory, I would just like it if they made it a touch easier to put one on. The slip on silencers are over $300 here in Western Canada. Not cost effective for how little I am going to trail ride. I am impeccable with my chain maintenance with correct chain adjustments, cleaning and lubing after every ride. Im sure I could make the chain last a lot longer if I was a lot lighter and slower. I am just too heavy for that to be a reality. I would love to know what size you are and at what level you are racing to get that kind of life out of your stock chain. I can only get two motos out of a tank of fuel and she is pretty much empty. I am not the average size rider however at 6’4” and north of 230lbs.

    • @westkrider1132
      @westkrider1132  3 роки тому

      The TTR125 is a great bike but it is a very mild bike. This machine is a beast. I would recommend a middle step like a 250F before going for this machine. When I was coming up racing I went straight from an 80cc to a 250cc (two stroke) and it set my riding development back. I went back down to a 125cc two stroke and it helped my riding immensely. I was your age at the time. The 250F is a crazy fast bike when ridden correctly. That would be my advice. Develop your skills further on something like a 250F before the jump to the 450F.

    • @westkrider1132
      @westkrider1132  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for checking out the channel. The number one thing to keep in mind with dirtbikes; much more so than streetbikes is that a good rider can make a slow bike fast. Too much bike can make a new rider slow. I cant say enough good things about the YZ450 but if you are doing any kind of technical riding like single track trails, it is a handful! For a smaller rider the YZ250F is actually just as fast. The ninja 600 is no slouch but offroad is a different animal. Get the bike you feel comfortable on. You will learn the fastest. If you are into motocross go for the “F” version of the Yamaha. If you are doing mostly trail riding then the “FX” is probably a better setup. Are you around the Okanagan? The guys at Kelowna Yamaha can get you pointed in the right direction if you are.

    • @mxr7586
      @mxr7586 3 роки тому

      If your new to motocross bikes I suggest you find someone you can ride the 250f then the 450. 450 sounds small to your street bike but they have more hp in that one cylinder than your street bike and they pack a punch if you happen to get whisky throttle. Yamaha does have rider appreciation days you can test any bike you want that they have there at the track just look it up and see where they’re going to be or ask a dealer near you if they have a used one you can test out.

      If you do some research I believe you will find the YZ is one of if not THE most reliable bike out there! As for mine it has been absolutely flawless even though I have abused it more than I have liked.
      Always keep fresh oil in it and clean/change the filter at good intervals and you wont have a problem at all.
      I have heard of a few YZ’s blowing up from pulling dirt by the air filter but my belief is that it was operator error and the owner didnt seat the filter correctly on the housing. I take extra care when puting the air filter back to ensure it is seated correctly. Flawless performance from mine so far.

    They put the bolts on the back of the muffler because it is a race machine and with dirt mud and rocks kicking up, falling, or other peoples wheels getting stuck in between the rear fender (yes this does happen), it is easier for those bolts to break off if they were on the back side of the muffler.

But I ride mainly off-road trails do you think that the XF model is the better way to go I’m not really a small rider I’m 6,2 so I’m worried about the XF being to soft in the trails but don’t feel the need for a true race bike that being said either one is a awesome bike just not sure what to do . Getting a new bike is always exciting!! From what you describe I would think the FX is probably the ideal choice for you. I bought the F because I ride mostly on the track with some trails thrown in now and then. If most of what you do is trail riding then the FX may be a little soft on the track but perfect on trails, the F would probably be perfect on the track but a little harsh on trails. Im 6’4” and 235 so I know what it is like to be a big rider. I am amazing how well the stock suspension has performed overall. That being said I am moving to stiffer springs.

    Drain Bolt! For sure, the biggest pain in the ass on this bike! Not necessarily because its horizontal, but because you can't get any kind of torque wrench in there to torque it up to 20Nm. I know you can do it by 'feel' but I like to use a torque wrench. After all Yamaha specifies a torque for it! Only way I could make it work was to grind down a 12mm socket by app 6mm.

    You do realise you have brought a full blown race bike and not a enduro bike although I'm on my 6th yz450f and all I ride is enduro, I think that you are under estimating the distance you can get out of a tank , I can go out for a good 2 hour ride no problem, im thinking that you should have got a wr450 or what I am in the process of getting right now which is a 2021 yz450fx and im mainly getting this bike for the electric start and larger fuel tank, there wasn't many people riding them off a track way back when I got my yz426f but watching one of Adam Riemans UA-cam videos a long time ago when he was setting the yz450f's up for enduro and was doing really well in comps got me thinking, im not sure with the yz450f but the fx you can whip your phone out and change maps or even customise one that suits your riding which is what im learning to do atm , the fx is only a extra $1500 here in Australia but it's right to go to get rec registration, the head light is better than putting a kit on a 450f because it runs of a battery , better gearing , electric start , map change with your mobile, well worth the 1500 in my mind ... happy riding

      Thanks for watching the video. Most of my riding is practicing and racing motocross; on a track. The FX has a softer frame, softer suspension, wide ratio transmission, kickstand, heavier flywheel and 18” back tire. I have exactly the bike I need and it is far cheaper to buy an IMS tank and spark arrestor than it is to try make a FX track competitive. Like I said in the conclusion. I love this bike and my complaints are petty. This bike is almost flawless!

      you don't even need to tune the suspension... I have the 2020 250fx and the suspension is STIFF as hell. Its hard to even trail ride with it at lower speeds because you just deflect over everything.

      @yuriabmxr 3 роки тому +1

      westkrider I agree with what you're saying about your choice and needs, but its not reasonable to lodge these things as "complaints" against a RACE bike, which is what the f is. 100% of f owners (minus you) would remove the spark arrester and run a big tank half empty all the time. Every bike will need minor mods to suit an end user but that doesn't mean every manufacturer is missing the mark. FWIW I own a 450fx and use it similarly as you.

    Yamaha doesn't go with hydrolic simply because you can still adjust it as you ride/race. Hydrolic you cannot, and once you cook that clutch, you are stuck. Ricky Carmichael could've, Chad Reed could've, but this Yamaha clutch is still smoother, stronger and more durable than a hydrolic. Also, I may have missed it, but why did you have to repack a brand new silencer/arrester? One more thing.... It a RACE MX bike. Should've looked at a the FX or WR. You will never wear out that clutch, transmission or the bike anyway.

    • @westkrider1132
      @westkrider1132  3 роки тому

      Those are valid points but I am definitely not a clutch abuser so the cable clutch is not the best choice. The resistance on the cable will change through the moto with the clutch how it is. With a hydraulic clutch the feel is firm and consistent even with thermal changes. That is a moot point however if the rider is a clutch abuser. That said the clutch works well. I am nitpicking at best. Where I ride in the desert mountains there is severe risk of fire in the summer months so riding areas make it mandatory to put a spark arrestor in. Im sure the WR or the FX are great bikes if you stay off the track but I ride-race MX 90% of the time but want to be able to take this bike on the trails. I would be more than happy to ride with anyone who says the MX version is not a great trail bike! The MX bike is capable of hitting the podium in a hare scramble with nothing but hand guards and a skid plate. Ive done it many times. The WR or FX are not so adept at winning motos and I cant afford 2 bikes.....

    I can’t believe how many people tell you to get a WR. I like moto bikes in the woods. 19 inch rear doesn’t matter to me. My average NW trail ride is 35 miles, so the stock tank is ok . The only thing I would put a non o-ring chain on would be a 125. I hate wide ratio transmissions. The manufacturers don’t want to admit to the governments that moto bikes will be used in the forest, that is why they won’t have anything to do with a spark arrestor.

    All of these because you bought the wrong bike. You bought a race bike not a trail bike. You should have got the 450fx. its meant for trail and track. The motocross suspension is great in the bush for me. The FX would solve two minor inconveniences I have but create many more. Softer frame, heavier bike, wide ration transmission, 18” rear wheel, kickstand, heavier flywheel would be dangerous riding on a track at a high level. Remember my 5 “least favorite things” are not true problems. They are just my least favorite things and help give a different perspective on the bike ownership. • @westkrider1132
      @westkrider1132  3 роки тому

      I was not suggesting a need for a spark arrestor. I was asking for easier access under the silencer cap. The easier access would also be required for regular repacking of the silencer; also required for closed course racing. Bikes designed for closed course racing had 2 gallon plus tanks for decades. You dont have to fill a bigger tank to the top to race motocross. I can assure you this isnt stiff suspension. It is incredibly plush suspension on a motocross track and well tuned to pro riding on the trails. Look at the starting line of the pro class at your next cross country race and let me know the percentage of “closed course racing” bikes. Pros dont ride WR’s.

    I don't see anything about this true. If you can't ride it in the trails. Get the fx with different suspension, want track. Keep the f... And really? The skid plate design? If you don't like it buy a crf they usually come with one. Hardly any manufacturers put them on the bike because some people don't like them. Those cases are designed to take some hits, hints why skid plates are optional from damage, nics, and other contact. I don't have a skid plate on my 19 250f yet and it's taken some slams from bottoming out, rocks, logs, etc... I did order one though but only for the fact that I got the frame powder coated. The spark arrestor can be fixed with a different set up. The chain, well the chain looks like it doesn't get cleaned to often nor oiled a lot. My stock chain last 40 hrs only because I didn't take care of it. Chains last however often you maintain it. I ran a sunstar chain last time I replaced it ans it last 85hrs. Because I tool care of it. Now I'm using pro-x and so far. So good. Take care of the small stuff that's what matters... The fuel tank, it's a motocross bike, not meant to go far but run slower speeds at higher rpms. Remember they only go to 35-40 mph. Cross country you can go as fast as you want for as long as you want and "f" is meant to stay at rpms for power. I understand why you state all these... However, not every bike can be the same because that would be boring and everything would be the same. I don't see anything but petty complaining about the smallest stuff.

My chain has lasted me 20 hours now so I don’t know if you lube your chain or over adjust it which will cause stretching. The clutch thing if you’re trail riding who cares racing you pull it in a lot more and I’m not complaining ya it might be nice but with the tuning app you’re saving a crap load on not buying aftermarket exhaust which this bike doesn’t need at all it’s fast. My friend has kx450 he was getting sick of me pulling from him so he bought exhaust and still pulling him so he tore the motor down to change to a high compression piston. So he spent over $1000 just to hang in there. Oh and his cylinder already had piston slap marks in the cylinder with only 17 hours. So good thing you didn’t get a Kawasaki! My son yz250f has a 150 hrs and we just tore the motor down cylinder had no scratches whatsoever. Also still started 1st or 2nd kick.

After doing some research and some investments I've added the necessary parts to make this bike ride just as good as its big brother ( yz 450 ) at the track. Yes there can be some downsides like weight and suspension, but again if you have to time and the money, you could really make this machine just as good as the yz. As an experienced MX racer I understand completely. I used to race hare scrambles and there was a decent cross over between machines. All I had to do was change suspension settings to take the trail junk better and then a few clicks and I was back in MX mode. All I am saying is the few things I have suggested wouldnt affect anyone but the fastest pros on the MX track but it would add versatility to the machine for the average owner.

    a YZ450F is in fact a MX bike, so to say most these bikes wont see an MX track is ignorant lol. Did you know what this bike was designed for?

      @@westkrider1132 just seems like the things you are looking for are on a WR more so than the MX. Sounds like you got this bike for suspension alone which you could have had done cheap.. I highly doubt you're skilled enough to outride these suspensions.

    It’s obvious you don’t race. Yamaha is top of the game when it comes to racing that’s how they become so popular. Winning races is what counts. Sorry you can’t take it through the woods. Change the tank or buy a wood bike. Don’t try to convert a motocross bike to a wood bike and then complain it’s too much like a motocross bike. Change your oil every race and your air cleaner every ride, and it’s obvious you don’t race much which is what these bikes are made for.

    • @westkrider1132
      @westkrider1132  2 роки тому

      Haha not quite. Vet Expert class. 90% of my riding is MX. I use exactly what the bike is for. I dont want a second bike just for a bit of woods riding. Nothing I suggest would slow down a MX racer at all. Having held a pro racing license at one point in MX and Hare Scrambles, my opinion is worth considering.

  • @vevohoeyo
    @vevohoeyo 3 роки тому

    Ok the 450 Yamaha is a rubbish bike. Here's why.
    Its heavy its wide, its wrap around exhaust gets caught in your boots and burns them. Its air intake is up in front of you and makes a terrible vacuum cleaner noise when you crank the throttle. It vibrates worse than any other 4 stroke, also cleaning the air filter is difficult as debris easily falls into the intake when you remove the filter. Plus all the things you mentioned. They also aren't as powerful and reliable as everybody says.
    The clutch gets really rattley with only a few hours!
    The ktm, husky and kawi are all better options

    If you're looking for a bike with a spark arrestor, and a bigger tank, you should have bought a trail bike. Don't buy a bike made for Motocross, on a closed course, and then complain about it not having things that come stock on a trail bike.
    Kind of pointless

    • @westkrider1132
      @westkrider1132  3 роки тому

      Since 90% of my riding is on a motocross track I thought it relevant. Most people who purchase a bike want the ability to ride either track or trail at their choice. That is my only point. None of the things I pointed out would slow it down on the track at all. They would however make it more buyer friendly.
