Hi Magreth Sungwa Dotto, I am so happy that it helped you. Have a wonderful day and thank you for watching and taking the time to send me a comment! Michelle Seitz
Hi Friendly UA-camr, If you watch the Heading Numbering video it will show you how to create a new heading and link it to heading 6. Then you also will need to watch the Table of Contents video in which you would create a custom Table of Contents that will include the Heading 6 style in the Options dialog screen withing the custom TOC dialog box. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching and for reaching out. Michelle Seitz
Thank you so much. However, please can you advise, in the table of contents, section, since Appendix is Heading 6 style, in TOC it gets indented. Is there any way to align it in the TOC. Thank you so much for what you have already shared. Please see if you can make a suggestion for TOC. Thanks again
Hi devislight! Thanks so much for watching! Yes, you only need to modify the style for that TOC level, which I am guessing is level 6. So look for TOC 6 and modify the indent. If you don't see TOC 6 in the Styles dialog box, at the bottom of the dialog box, click on Manage Styles. When it opens, on the Recommend tab, scroll down until you see the TOC style you need. Now click the Show button and click OK. Now it will appear in the Styles dialog box. Click the down arrow and select Modify. When the dialog box opens click the Format button on the bottom left and select Paragraph. In this dialog box, select the Left indentation that you want. I hope this helps. If you need more help, please email me at michelles@formattingformula.com. Have a great day! Michelle Seitz

Hello! Thank you for the video. I tried this method, but I'm having a problem getting this to work for other people who use the document. Do you have any suggestions?
Hi Borui CUI, Please feel free to correspond with me through email at michelles@formattingformula.com and provide me more detailed information about your needs. Thanks for reaching out. Michelle Seitz
@@Formattingformula Well my document has numbered section 1 through 5, and then some appendices. So I am trying to get "Appendix A" and "Appendix B" and so on to behave like the numbered sections, And appear the same in the table of contents.
@@baldcarrots There is a way to have them display with your TOC but it is involved. You would need to make Level 6 "Appendix X (which is the field code. You need to make it either a letter or number) You actually type the word "Appendix" before the field code. This will need to be done in the "New List Style". You need to attach it to Heading 6. Then you need to modify the Style so if you want it to be left aligned and All CAPS for example, so it looks the way you intended. Make sure that you include it in the Custom Table of Contents (Level 6, that is). If you need more help, please send me an email at michelles@formattingformula.com. Good Luck! Michelle Seitz
Hello Thanks for the video, but there is a problem you didnt mention, the appendix does appear in level 6. How do we make it level to correct format in navigation pane?
Hi Muhsin Acar, I will be happy to help. Can you provide me with some more information? Do you have a document you can send to me so that I can take a look at it for you? If so, please send it to support@formattingformula.com. Thank you, Michelle Seitz
Thanks for the help suggestion, but I do not have a file. I am trying to learn how to create Appendices that can be seen in navigation pane as heading 1, and with captioning style of Figure A.1,.... etc. You have explained very good how to create the appendix with proper captioning, but the Appendix remains as a subsection of Heading 5 as you assign Heading 6 to it. Once you activate the navigation pane you will see, it seems like a subsection of heading 5. Appendices are not subsections of headings, they are separate heading that needs to have same level of heading 1. I would appreciate if you have a solution for this. Thank again
Hi Muhsin, I think I understand. But I don't know if that is possible since when you create a numbered heading 1, the format is the same throughout the document. You want to have 2 different Heading 1s with 2 different formats. Word would not be able to recognize that. Let me think about this and get back to you. Thanks, Michelle
Hi Lars, The only way that I can see to make this work is without auto numbering. When you apply Heading 1 to text without auto numbering you can make the text any content you prefer and it will still be Heading 1, however, the down side is that you will have to add the numbering manually. So you can have the text Appendix 1 or Appendix A as Heading 1 but you will have to add the numbers (or letters) manually. I am open to any other solutions. Thank you, Michelle Seitz
Thank you for all your videos. I follow your instruction and they are very useful. I am having a problem with heading 1. I have done multi-level and everything was fine. at the end, I checked hidden for heading 1 so no numbers can be shown in front/before the chapter name. Now, there is a black box in front of the title (heading 1) and I can not re-show the number!! word refusing to respond to this step!! any suggestion, please? Thanks in advance
You have encountered one of the Word gremlins. I actually created a video to fix this. Please go to ua-cam.com/video/ek69aUZ_10o/v-deo.html snd it should work for Word 2016 as well as 2013 & 2010. Please let me know if this helped you. Happy Holidays. Michelle Seitz
Yes, it helped. Thank you very much. Do you have video on how to create table content of each chapter separately for a thesis? and How we can have the chapter title without the number before it without disrupting the numbering? I followed your instructions in heading numbering but I want now to hide the number of Chapters in heading 1 with maintaining the numbering in the general table of content. I tried to do hide but then things got messed up and heading 2 for other chapters did not follow the correct numbering. Please. is it possible?
I need more information. Can you send me the student guidelines for your thesis from your college/university so that I can see what you need? You can send it to michelles@formattingformula.com for privacy.
Hi, thanks for the video. It helped a lot. However, when trying to create multiple lists of figures word is automatically selecting and updating the existing list of figures with appendix figures. I am using Word 2019. Am I missing some trick here? Thanks in advance

When I do this, the appendix is now listend under the last numbered section (in my case 5) on the table of contents.
