Great to see Mr Lurch! Was just thinking the other day hadn't seem him post anything for ages. Shame about the dead 1084, I dread the day mine make this noise
There are two professions that hack off cables. The other is crackheads. Great to see you two back together! It's like Starsky and Hutch. Ponch and John. Bo and Luke. (if Hutch, Bo and John were bald instead of blonde.)
Good to see you Mr. Lurch! Also thanks for this, your diagnosis of the bad flyback CRT helps me, as I have an old Apple RGB CRT on my bench that sounds very similar, and I've been suspecting that it's the flyback. Unfortunately I think that means I can't fix it.
With that strain relief on the old power cable I cut each side flush then drill out the old cable just big enough for the new cable the slide the new cable on and glue it in place.. job done and looks like factory ;D
You can actually still buy flybacks for these (I think I got the same one you tried on another video actually). I bought one for my *3* that are dead, yet to install it but fingers crossed. Also, the sliding of the front glass on the table! haha
Exactly, with this Philips-1084 that's the sound it makes when the flyback is bad. It is because to windings short together connecting the B+ to ground. Then the powersupply will squeal like this. Replacements might still be around - 8 years or so ago I was still able to order one at a TV-parts shop... wasn't even that expensive, it was like 25€
25:17 “Does that do anything?” “No” “Does that do anything?” “That gives us a Blank Screen” “What about that and that?” “No” This video has me laughing all the way, well done… it’s all so familiar! I always have the same experience with the silly location of those buttons 😂 One selects analogue or digital RGB One selects separate or composite video One selects RGB or video In my experience, that third switch often has dodgy contacts which mess up the video signal colour and sync - pressing it a few times seems to help. I think that’s what happened here. And 30:33 - the whine kicks in, my working one does that too after some random time 😂 perhaps use iso-alcohol to remove existing hot glue splodges on coils/inductors/chokes, and then apply fresh hot glue You’ve done really well to capture the CRT picture (and noises) on video, I can’t seem to ever do that without mad flickering. I have one of these same 1084S-P1 that’s dead and making a very strange low-pitched roaring noise (like when a kettle is just starting to heat up) - or like ocean waves - the sound continues for a second or two after turning off. I don’t know where to start with finding this one, as it’s more a water-pressure sound than a high-frequency sound :)
4:45 1. Making probably still working but just outdated devices useless. 2. Wrecking still usable devices that the recyclers could actually resell for decent money just to scab about 20 cents worth of copper. 3. Don't even have the courtesy to take the plugs with them so you can just find them later when you're mowing your lawn.
Also a side note that 9 pin connector is technically a DE-9 based on specifications I know many call it a DB, but the second letter is the size of the connector
@3:24 Mr. Lurch states that it hasn't been powered on in years, but I've read in multiple places that some CRTs can rebuild a charge (probably not lethal, but painful) simply from ambiant conditions. Is that an old wives tale, or just not a concern because of some modern bleeder discharge circuit on these?
It's possible, but as you say not lethal. The capacitors are unlikely to build up a charge of more than a few volts. The CRT on the other hand could build up a charge big enough to shock you, but it would be more like a static electricity shock rather than a big shock you'd get from a freshly powered off CRT
„I need a third hand“… 😂 many years ago, a new colleague told that to my other colleague and got the reply „Whatcha need a third hand for? You don’t have three pockets in your pants, either.“
That was quite funny, you both make a great team, you should do that in a live stream, with a third person to read the comments and make you guys react to it! 😂👍👍
Ever since i hear about the problems with the power switch on the 1084s ,I always leave mine in the On position and just turn it off and on with the wall socket switch . Is this ok to do or is it a bad thing to do ? Greetings from the UK.
I had read that in Australia and New Zealand it's illegal for consumers to do basic electrical things like splicing wires, etc, such that one has to employ a certified electrician to do simple things like that. Is that true?
Only for internal building wiring. For example we can plug whatever we want into a power point, but only a licensed electrician is allowed to mess with the power point itself. I don't think NZ have the same rules but I could be wrong
Such a good time to watch you two together; thanks for this!
Great Duo chemistry, hope to see more of those video's in the future :)
Huzzah for Mr Lurch not being dead! And same for that second 1084.
Like two kids nerding out during a sleep over.
Good work!
Thumbs up for the glamorous assistant
Great to see Mr Lurch! Was just thinking the other day hadn't seem him post anything for ages. Shame about the dead 1084, I dread the day mine make this noise
This...poked my funnybone. 😂 Good video, indeed.
The dynamic duo! 😂
There’s nothing more entertaining than two grown-up men making pubescent jokes and ‘that’s what she said’ jokes!
Nice Video and great to see Mr. Lurch again...looked like a lot of fun! -Mark.
Great to see a happy and relaxed Mr Lurch!
Good to see you again, Mr Lurch!
Great to see you both together! While you are entertaining on your own it doubles the fun when you do a cooperation video! Oh, and good job!
Good to see a wild Mr. Lurch appear! I'd love to see the 1084S-P saved, but just looked and wow have the prices for replacement flybacks shot up 😵
So good to see you around, Mr. Lurch. BTW, who's the guy by your side, the one in a black t-shirt ???
Good to seeing Mr Lurch…….greetings to both of you from the USA

YAAAAAY! Good to see you again, mystery guest :) Hope you're going well.

Great video, and it's nice to see your guest. Glad he is doing great
So much fun to watch. Has set my day up nicely. Thank you both.
“He’s down there reaching for a tool”😂
Guys, you are great! The tool joke made me laugh loud. 😄
Keep up with great work. We love Retro!
Great chemistry between you two!
With that strain relief on the old power cable I cut each side flush then drill out the old cable just big enough for the new cable the slide the new cable on and glue it in place.. job done and looks like factory ;D
I was surprised by how much I missed hearing Mr Lurch's voice.

Very refreshing! Love this format! Great to see Mr. Lurch back!
In the mean time bigclive holding the pcb, a wire and the solder in one hand and the iron in the other :)
But fun video, I liked it :)
The whine from the second one is driving me insane :D

There are so many that is what she said moments in this video
Thank you for sharing and keeping up the good work!!!

@@TheRetroChannel Interesting. Thanks for the info, and keep making these great videos!
This video is what we should launch into space as proof of our existence. What a magical experience.
7:12 Bill Lumbergh vibes!
lol @9:48... That's heavy foreshadowing if I ever saw it. :)
Many hands make "light" work. :)
„I need a third hand“… 😂 many years ago, a new colleague told that to my other colleague and got the reply „Whatcha need a third hand for? You don’t have three pockets in your pants, either.“
When you put it on the tube like you do you should put a towel under it to avoid scratching the glass.
Im in the USA I bought my Hakko thru Jameco, very nice tool
Is the RGB port completely held on by the solders or is there adhesive or anything else? Mine's the same and will need opening up.
I think it's only soldered in, probably why the joints seem to break so easily
Yeah I think that is composite or using the Stereo AV cable.

No that's a good solution. Don't worry.
Yeah that works
GREAT retro content! How long have you two known each other? How far away is Mr Lurch from your place?
Only a few years, he lives about 10 minutes away
G'day Mr Lurch!
Just started the vid.., are there going to be some swalloed screws?
do the 1084's have an actual Audio board? The Audio on my 1084 is dead, nothing and one speaker wont work, well kind of tries to.
Great video... nice to see the Aussie humour is just as bad as British humour!
How many screws in the coffee this time?
do do me does the 1084-S have an amplifier?
It’s like a modern day Bill Oddie and Graham Garden. Goodie… Goodie Goodie… Yum Yum… ha ha ha
Love you too interacting :3
This video is a little bit like som old comedy sketch like The Plank. All good.
Is that definitely coffee?
Can you substitue a Magnavox Flyback, if you have one.
I'm not sure, but it is still possible to get 3rd party replacements by HR Diemen

One of my Magnavox monitors made a noise it sounded like a squealing pig.
Oh yeah mine is a 1084-S but the Audio on it is dead.
ROFL at your puns boys nice video.
I think you need to fire that guy in the black T-shirt.
I have one with a busted power switch sitting on my table right now.
Dogonit your supposed to hookup a C64, gee
You mean TOADO.
Quit Goofin' Off!
We Need this thing to Beat the 30 min mark......
