P.S. Guys honestly let's just drop it now. My talk at the beginning was not even really directed at the anime but at some of the hella bizarre comments from last time. It is just an anime so I'm not gonna stick on one scene for this long but some of y'all real people are triggered about how some of us felt about watching that situation and THAT'S a red flag. Older people can still make mistakes they regret. A sheltered 21yo can be easier to take advantage of than a mature 16yo. Proper knowledge/training are much better weapons against people that want to take advantage of ur ignorance. People mature at different levels, I don't really hold sheltered individuals to the same standards as people forced to grow up faster.
I think Denji only really likes Makima because his relatively short life (he is only 16 after all) up until meeting her was so shitty that the basic decency she showed him and her being physical with him was enough for him to be infatuated with her, even though she's clearly taking advantage of him for her own mysterious goals. Even Denji is able to see through it sometimes, like in the second episode where he remarks that he thought she was nice and "I had no idea she was scary like this" after she basically told him that he was to work for her or be killed, but then he quickly squashes this thought when she offers him food. Just goes to show how dire his situation was previously

Long answer: Denji grew up with no mother, and being abused by his father. Since his father's death, he were despised by every one around him so, he never acknowledged what love is nor different kind of love like parents love, or friendship. Consecuently he can't differenciate between those kinds of affection. With Makima, he love's her, but he can't distiguish between love as mother figure and romantic love. In part, being a hor### teenager doesn't help either.
The worst part, Makima is aware about this, so she take advantadge of it, which (in my opinion) is much worst than what everyone is complaining about Himeno.

The author of Chainsaw Man has stated that he based Denji and Makima's relationship on various real life parental abuse cases. Cases where the parent figure abuse their power over their child to keep them under their thumb through various underhanded means like Makima, veiled under a veneer of kindness. So yeah, Chainsaw Man Part 1 is indeed a cautionary tale about grooming and breaking away from abusive relationships.
While part 2 is about...justice I guess? Right and wrong are definitely an important theme as of now, with all the moral conundrums and the contrast between intentions and results of an action
The series is VERY much about trauma experience & what it normalizes for different individuals and how those interactions overlap with other people with different trauma. I really appreciate how you called out those details at the start - because every part is always meant to tiptoe along the lines between discomfort and rational justification where traumatized individuals have to navigate intricate context that they have no experience with.
Woah… it's super weird to see my own comment from Alana Misako's video get copy-pasted onto somebody else's video 6 hours later. (Copy-paste means that you missed the fact that I italicized the word _VERY_ which also makes it stand out).
The thing people that defend Himeno need to realize is that she really isn't being responsible. This show is full of flawed people and when people idolize the actions of someone like Himeno it's not right.
When I was Denji's age I could relate to him heavy and didn't realize abuse from people older than me. Now that I am older myself it's just clear how everyone older than Denji and trying to do things like this are just trying to use him and it's uncomfortable, which is why I think your reaction to all this is justified
She's a great character in the manga/anime but a bad person at least the little we get out of her people can enjoy her role in the story but shouldn't be trying to even slightly justify her actions she's a shit human being

Adults aren't allowed to have underaged people at their homes. That's illegal I'm Japan. Especially if you aren't related. Some dude just got arrested for that. People justifying the behavior is so weird. They think because they like the character they need to support all their behavior and ideas.
Its nuts how many people were arguing over this when the show and even himeno herself admits that she was doing something wrong. Insane how far people go over this as if the age of consent just makes what she did okay. While i agree that you shouldn't get too invested in fiction for your own good(twitter is crazy with this), discussing what you saw in the episode is by no means wrong or being too invested.
the issue was there was slight hypocrisy when Himeno who was drunk and unable to make actual judgments was being called a predator vs watching them see Barou in Blue lock who is 16 and thirsting over them. my issue isn't really her argument it's the fact that the line was drawn in the sand in two places

It was nice to see your opinion on Himeno change. Despite her short run she is one of my favorite characters. As you said she is very flawed, but you can certainly see that she isn't like that at her core. She was in an extremely emotional state and it out on the closest person nearby (Denji). Obviously it was a terrible thing to do, but it was nice that she took accountability for it (I think her wording of "took advantage of" implies that she felt remorse over what she did) and tried to make it up to Denji (offering to help him get with Makima and being his first friend), with Denji of course not really caring that much about what transpired.
She genuinely loved Aki and I think got to show her true colors in her final moments going out trying to protect someone she loved.
Her death scene still hits really hard and kind of hurts way more in retrospect as we go forward in the series, but that's just Chainsawman. Lol.
The "slice of life" scene of Aki and his morning routine (episode 4) contrasts beautifully with Himeno's evening "routine". Really showcases her self destructive nature.

Himeno wasn’t my favorite character, but she was definitely still up there. The only death in an anime that I've ever cried over, possibly because I'm depressed, but damn. 😭 I definitely thought she would live longer. Just how suddenly it happened and the way she died- "Don't die, Aki. So that you can cry for me when I die." That really hit me. 😨 This episode was amazing, none the less. It made me super sad, but the fight happening is super cool! I'm really looking forward to the next episode. Rip Himeno. 🤧

Congratulation you just enter Painsawman true experience, the emotional damage in this episode is nothing compared to what coming in future story

The thing is, EVERYONE, not only Makima and Himeno, EVERYONE in chainsaw man is fucked up in some way. Aki is trying to use Denji (which we all agree is a fucking child) as a weapon to try to kill a demonic pandemonium... which is pretty much the same as using a child soldier. Denji himself used a car with a INNOCENT inside as a weapon and didn´t killed the man because he jumped out of it in time. The Devil Hunters as a whole are the same as the YAkuza from the first episode- "Do THIS or you´re dead, boy". The only thing that really changed is that they are feeding him properly now. SO my concern here is that a lot of people is freaking out with the HImeno thing NOW that we already had other 100 things to freak out about before, and most of them are worst than kissing a minor.
People freaking out about HImeno doesn't mean they didn't notice the other weird moral misalignment with most of the characters in this story, this particular one just happened to be the last straw to break the camel's back. A lot of the other issues you've pointed out are pretty common depictions in Shounen media in general, and therefore would not attract a more visceral reaction as sth like this issue we're discussing about. But that doesn't mean they're not notices or frowned upon.
At least, that's what I would like to assume about all the commenters condemning her actions. I know people's understanding of social ethics and issues and norms can vary.
I didn't say anything last week 'cause I didn't wanna spoil this episode, but I remember you saying that you were angry because this anime doesn't care about things like the vulnerability and innocence of minors cause "it's one of those shows". But I hope this episode changed your opinion a little (still in the middle of watching your post-episode discussion, looks like it did). Chainsaw Man is 100% aware of these topics and addresses them. Denji's vulnerability and trauma is one of the main themes of the show. Just like you said, Himeno was in the wrong for taking advantage of the situation. And that's exactly the point the show is trying to make. But because the previous episode ended without a resolution to this conflict, it might've given you the wrong impression. I don't like Himeno either, but she's definitelly a flawed and compelling character, but I can appreciate what she adds to the story.

You were spot on with what you said at the start Lala and this show is definitely about how denji keeps getting manipulated so you ARE correct to feel that way, himeno literally addresses it herself in the show. Not enough reactors take time to talk about the actual content of the show, and too many people think talking about this particular situation means you are trashing the series, but that's not what it is at all. It just indicates that the series had more depth to it than most anime and deals with some very real human issues.

The real question is when can a person consent something? 18? why? Why is age of consent not 20? are there studies that show a person reaching 18 can consent everything? How can someone say law is not important when literally their morals are based on the 18 age of consent? people ARE basing their morals on laws
Good question. I believe age of consent should fall more in line with the typical legal adult age. That's about 18-21. My reason for this is not because of the law per se but because since that is the law, it has its life changing results. Meaning: most people at those ages are now experiencing life somewhat at a more balanced level as people older. Young adults can now do what older adults are doing such as drinking, going into certain places, being legally judged the same etc. Someone that has the same exposure at 18 or 21 as someone in their late 20s early 30s can actually be more experienced than even them depending on their personal life experiences. That's what I think. But 18 for adult age is still young imo but life is moving so fast nowadays young people are maturing faster i think
@@Lalafluffbunny I think it really depends on the person, some people mature faster than others, an 18 year old can have a 13 year old mentality, even a 20 year old can be extremely inmature, i've literally known people that are 24 and are extremely innocent, they are virgins and don't even know almost nothing about sex, i've seen this in places like churches or religions that are very strict, so to be honest it's really unfair for those types of people to be judged like that, just because they are in their mid 20s doesn't mean they can consent and not regret it afterwards like you said, so it really depends on the person, in this world everything can happen, I've even heard of 15 year olds boys trying to rape an adult, or the kids that were going on the street in Rusia killing homeless people in brutal ways, filming them and even laughing and enjoying it, do you think those people don't know what they are doing and should be forgiven and not go to jail or have any type of punushment just because they are minors? and "they don't know what they are doing"? Of course a lot of people that are underage know what they are doing, some even take advantage of that just because law is softer on minors, a lot of ex convicts, criminals and serial killers shave said that, that when they were kids they used to take advantage of that and commit crimes without any consequences
Heartbreaking! Bittersweet...amazing episode but sad to lose a character who could provide depth to our character group we have. I was looking forward to the potential development of how they would try to get closer to Aki and Makima. I could've seen a bunch of comedic moments that would come from Denji trying to maneuver his way of getting Aki closer to Himeno 🥺 We lost a fun character today - R.I.P.

😒”Respect the culture” those same creeps don’t know that Japan’s consent laws are actually stricter than the US. Under 18 can consent with each other but NOT with adults and even those under 18 have to be within a couple years of their partners….so yeah no 12s and 17s. The law is like that because Japan does have comprehensive sex Ed and doesn’t have the Abrahamic stigma and shame associated with sex so it’s understood that teens will be active and should be protected from predators.
The creeps that think otherwise get their knowledge of Japan from anime/manga which is not representative and as a whole is an unregulated industry that gets to publish some of the most vial and immoral things under the guise of art.

One of the things about this series is how the situations run in repeated cycles like the way trauma does, because it makes it carry a heavier impact since it unknowingly feels familiar.
We've actually watched the same dynamic of the entire scenario with Himeno's death before already… but from a different perspective. Last time, we were on the side of the non-Human, non-Devil.
The Leech Devil showed up and fought Denji because he killed her boyfriend the Bat Devil. The only character who could potentially recognize that is Power, because Denji has a bullet in his head. We know he can come back from that injury which is a comfort… but it's terrifying when it's someone who your brain considers a "Them" and not an "Us"
Being able to understand those as being more alike than different is actually a key part of trauma therapy, especially when it comes to PTSD which is why I appreciate the story's design so much.

for some reason I just don't see asa genuinely having romantic feelings , I think it would be more interesting if she was just more of an actual mature genuine friend to denji, rather than some love interest, as every character so far aside from aki, power, and pochita; has used denji for their ulterior motive, so it would be pretty peak if instead of a bandaid solution to denji's need for romantic affection, he gets a genuine supportive friendship
If only Reze had someone too
I felt the last episode was there to portray Himeno's character: that her grudge against the Gun Devil wasn't as strong as her desire for a normal life, to have a lover and what not(hence the reason she wanted to go Private with Aki), and that's why she nearly made a move on Denji-out of loneliness. Here, in this episode, it seems she makes the final sacrifice for the partner who never died on her.
Now what I'm curious about is if she becomes a part of Ghost🤔

The law was made for man, and not the other way around. There come various times/moments in each of our lives, when we come to terms with fundamental notions that we have about life and the different matters that constitute it (freedom, intimacy, education, rights, beliefs, aspirations, desires, etc). It was very neat to hear about some of your core, unshakeable beliefs - that don't stem from a constitution, rather from an understanding of people and your past experiences.
Also, I love when you speak French mid-way, because some things are just better conveyed with a a specific phrase, or in a specific language.
Edit: Also, clearly you are in a better state of mind than 16-yo you, but I hope you are able to continue to truly move on with present you. I, alongside, a lot of people are able to accept that our younger selves did idiotic things, but moving on is the really difficult and tricky thing.

The discourse around Himeno and other characters in CSM is honestly a bit more complicated.
I don't think people are so defensive because they genuinely think she acted okay in that scene. It's because of the massive increase in harassment online towards people who like certain characters.
Another Anituber, Chibi Reviews was sent death threats and told to kys simply because he made a joke about Denji and Makima being a good couple (which was clearly sarcasm, but either way, even if it wasn't, it was done after like the 2nd episode, before the bigger red flags about her start to emerge, so how would a potential anime-only even know?), and this trend has continued, with artists who draw Makima getting sent threats, and the same for Himeno fans.
Basically getting told "if you like this character, that means you think grooming is ok, and you're a peed, and you should kys" over anime characters.
So, when you were expressed dislike of what Himeno was doing, people probably projected all that hatred into what you said.
In reality, that would be silly. As you have reacted to, and loved many series that feature "problematic relationships", including the whole teen/adult thing. Fruit Basket is a great example of that.
In those instances, we watch it and are like "yeah it's just an anime, it's just fiction, it's not a big deal".
The difference is that CSM is very clearly trying to make it uncomfortable, and have us feel bad for Denji. So we are going to have a worse reaction to it than "insert silly high school romance anime".
But all the hostility online and harassment has made people extra defensive.
And they bring up stupid arguments like "age of consent".
Which, firstly, is not relevant. This is an anime. Denji is not real. Why try to bring up IRL laws to justify something that happened in a work of fiction, to someone who doesn't exist?
Secondly, it's not even true. 13 being legal in Japan only works under the context that there is NOT manipulation going on. It's like that so they won't put a 14 year old in jail for being with a 13 year old. It still wouldn't be legal to take advantage of a drunk teen. Context matters.
And thirdly, Denji's arbitrary age is not the main problem, it's the fact he's been mistreated all his life, and is as desperate as he is. He is in a vulnerable position. I'd still think he was taken advantage of even if he was 25.
But yeah, I think people's very strong reaction to this is not because they "are red flags", it's simply because there has been so much harassment and hate surrounding these characters, and anyone who enjoy them, they are just blinded by a need to defend them no matter what, and they end up using awful arguments to do so.
