Thank you for the update on the Baby Care center in Sierra Leone. I think about those mamas often. My baby is eight months old today. I had a marginally difficult delivery that was made easier by great hospital care. My family and I take long walks through this beautiful old cemetery near our house, and I see all the hundred-year-old little lamb headstones and know that my baby and I are alive because of highly trained staff. I am so very very grateful that you've given me a way to provide some support to these moms across the world from me.
I really appreciate that even though living is difficult in USA right now, Hank and John are still supporting PIH because this crisis is only exacerbating the systemic issues in the world. This is true of race and class divides in America and it is also true of wealth and healthcare inequality across the world.
Even though he's not that much older than me, I've always kind of looked up to John. I've needed every video he's posted this year. He gives me the same glimmer of hope my brothers and professors used to when things got tough.
Thank you for taking a week off. I am a teacher trying to push myself to do housework, but as an experienced distance learning teacher, I have been in rescue mode since March 18th. Good to take a week off. This is so, so, so, so hard for teachers. I can only imagine how drained you must be. thank you for doing the hard hard work, but yes, I really hope you find some time to take away and recharge. Good luck. -John
Yes! I was extremely confused. By this logic, Henry and Alice are not immediate family members. Or does John think that siblings automatically stops being immediate family members the moment one of them gets married/have children?
I just wanted to plop down here to say this: in my sixth grade history class we watched A LOT of crash course. We started saying that John and my science teacher were best friends cause they both have basically the same personality. I went on for 3 years and every single time we saw John we all screamed “John”. That’s it.
I just wanted to comment and say that listening to a Dear Hank and John podcast each night (I'm listening to all of them since I've only ever listened to a few before) has been such an enjoyable experience and made me feel hopeful and entertained in an otherwise rather bleak and disappointing time. The most powerful advice I can remember receiving is when someone yelled at me to STOP WORKING AND GO LIE DOWN. Take a break, John, take a break. And probably yell at Hank to do the same.
The way I often feel most like I'm not wasting my time is by helping people. There are lots of fascinating ways to volunteer remotely -- citizen science projects where you contribute to current research, tutoring other students in subjects you enjoy, making phone calls or sending letters to isolated elders who live alone, making phone calls or sending texts for political candidates, and probably many more you can find in your community.
Now that I've gone through childbirth, I'm even more excited about the momma and infant support from PIH. Keep it up y'all! ♥️ The right support IS life changing. My son lost a ton of weight after birth and without a medical support network, we would have suffered so much. Thanks again for being awesome.
If you could, everyone, please keep an eye out for the United Kingdom. Our government voted down an amendment which would protect our free healthcare service from future trade deals after Brexit. We're going to get poorer and our government has been ignoring the NHS increased funding needs for decades, not to mention ignoring potential electoral manipulation. Things will become in a really bad way and we may lose the very thing you guys strive so hard for. If it comes to it, please donate to whatever causes pop up once our health care service become private. It's just so distressing and I worry for my future. Thank you John for light in this dark time.
My husband has very similar anxiety problems as you do. I struggle between empathizing with his anxiety and frustration with it. What kinds of things would you recommend for those of us with normal levels of anxiety to be kinder to those with anxiety disorder especially during a pandemic?
Note: I am not an expert. It is frustrating. But as Aza says at one point in Turtles All the Way Down, "If you think it's frustrating to love me, imagine how frustrating it is to BE me." I think the most important thing is to help your loved one get help, because if they're living with untreated anxiety, then it may be almost impossible for them to distinguish between extremely serious real threats to life/well-being, and everyday frustrations or difficulties or minor worries. Empathy and reassurance can go a long way, but ultimately it requires careful and ongoing treatment--just like any chronic health disorder. So I'd encourage you or your husband to reach out to a counselor or to talk to your doctor. If you don't have a doctor, try an urgent care center. This is an urgent problem, especially now, and it's treatable. -John
@@vlogbrothers I tell people all the time that my OCD anxiety makes it very difficult, if not impossible, for me to distinguish between things that are Not A Big Deal and things that are An Extremely Big Deal.
Thank you so much for being so incredibly open about your anxieties. Seeing you express your worries so freely has led me to better handle my seemingly omnipresent anxiety. It's easy to feel alone in this place of fear and uncertainty, so it's a relief to know that I'm not alone. Thank you for everything that you do, and I hope we can all get through this together
0:10 This confused me for a second, but then I realized that people can't fly. All we can do is create massive pressurized containers that hold several tons of cargo and passengers, and fly that to nearly anywhere on the planet within a day or two.
Thank you for sharing the poem by Clint Smith. As someone who has lost a loved one to the corona virus this poem almost perfectly summed up how I feel about phrases like that.
I just love the wonderful community care system built into Nerdfighteria. We are anti-ableist and supportive and empathetic to each other and that means the world to me to see in people I so admire. So thanks for modeling how to create an intentional community that supports folks living with chronic illness and mental illness.
He did question it in text in the video for a second, but immediate could really be his wife and kids now Cause if hank is his immediate family, what does he call the family he have with his wife and kids.. First immediate & second immediate? lol.
I think in the context of the question immediate family is the people you live with, because they’re the only people you’re supposed to hug with the social distancing rules, and I think the intent of the question was to ask about the impact of social distancing on John’s recent hugs.
Hank lives on another plane of existence That's why it's not "immediate" (John's plane has brain chemistry illness, but Hank's plane has bowel response illness)
I am so very happy that John is taking some time off. Let us all remember to take care of ourselves in these trying times. Do something that makes you happy and gives you a break from the crisis, whether it be reading, going for a walk or baking a cake. You matter, and you need care!
Thank you for both recognizing the need fora break and taking it. It's especially difficult right now to be kind to oneself, but it's as important as ever. I hope you feel more calm and rested afterward. And please be kind to yourself.
hank is immediate, he is your brother, in the same way, your two children are immediate to each other. Unless there is some news you'd like to tell me about y'alls genetics, but then that opens the question, are adopted siblings immediate, I would say they are, as well, immediacy might speak to intimacy. Anyways, this thought can keep going. DFTBA
I feel like this youtube video might be referenced in a number of years as an early example about how the shift in definition for "immediate family" from genetic immediacy to physical immediacy happened. Some Ask_Historians expert on the 2020s will quote it, like, "You can see from this video how the COVID-19 pandemic shifted the understanding of immediacy in the family dynamic. Even after reviewing John is unsure of the definition. If you look at this archival TicTok..."

Hey, I just wanted to let you know how much Turtles All The Way Down has helped me with managing and understanding my own anxiety. Aza's experiences validated my own and helped me feel less alone, also the word spiral has become a more common part of my vocabulary and that word in particular along with many different parts of that novel has given me the language to articulate my thought process with others and for myself. So if you see this, just from the bottom of my heart thank you.

I am so very very grateful that you've given me a way to provide some support to these moms across the world from me.
Restoring my faith in humanity bit by bit. Empathy empathy empathy

I really appreciate that even though living is difficult in USA right now, Hank and John are still supporting PIH because this crisis is only exacerbating the systemic issues in the world. This is true of race and class divides in America and it is also true of wealth and healthcare inequality across the world.
How do you rate video titling after a 90's pop song?
That would be an absolutely absurd project. Why would anyone ever do that? What could it possibly accomplish? Two stars. -John

Oh my goodness, John being bad a pointing ❤️ that gave me a wave of nostalgic Vlogbrothers feels.

The heart goes away when you edit the comment, surprise.
You know the heart goes when you edit it though.

Even though he's not that much older than me, I've always kind of looked up to John. I've needed every video he's posted this year. He gives me the same glimmer of hope my brothers and professors used to when things got tough.
you know he said “worry” a lot in this but the puff is gone, so that’s probably positive
Thank you for taking a week off. I am a teacher trying to push myself to do housework, but as an experienced distance learning teacher, I have been in rescue mode since March 18th. I am now exhausted, utterly drained. I too will take a week off. Just not next week, I have a few more Zoom meetings left.
Good to take a week off. This is so, so, so, so hard for teachers. I can only imagine how drained you must be. thank you for doing the hard hard work, but yes, I really hope you find some time to take away and recharge. Good luck. -John
John, Hank is your brother, I think this qualifies as immediate family
Yes! I was extremely confused. By this logic, Henry and Alice are not immediate family members. Or does John think that siblings automatically stops being immediate family members the moment one of them gets married/have children?
Maybe Hank is only immediate family when he's in John's immediate surroundings?
Yes, I think of "immediate family" as one's parents, children, siblings, (edit) and spouse.
@@Naiadryade and spouse
@@LeoStaley Ah yes of course, I forgot
Thanks for the video, donating my birthday money to the Sierra Leone project ❤
I just wanted to plop down here to say this: in my sixth grade history class we watched A LOT of crash course. We started saying that John and my science teacher were best friends cause they both have basically the same personality. I went on for 3 years and every single time we saw John we all screamed “John”. That’s it.
I just wanted to comment and say that listening to a Dear Hank and John podcast each night (I'm listening to all of them since I've only ever listened to a few before) has been such an enjoyable experience and made me feel hopeful and entertained in an otherwise rather bleak and disappointing time. Thank you for making them.
I measure my tomatoes every Tuesday. They grow about a half-inch per day! 🍅
That's lovely! I am also having a good tomato year. -John
@@vlogbrothers I too decided to start gardening this year. I'm hoping to beat John unrealistic goal of 17 peas :P
@@Gablork unless you're in Canada or Alaska, peas should pretty much be done for the year. They like cold weather so if you want a lot, plant them early. Like really early. When your grass starts turning green, thats about right.
@@herranton Oh they've been planted for a while now, got my first bean last week!
Also, I'm in Canada but summer in Canada is nowhere near cold (unless you are in the very far north), it's been 85F for the past two weeks here :P
WHAT THAT'S INSANE!!! THAT'S SO FAST
I love that a Question Tuesday video became mostly a PIH-SL video. 🙌 (And I’m glad you’re taking time to take care of your brain, John. ❤️)
I love that John made the line: "somebody once asked," into a question Tuesday video. That is is very satisfying!
I am a reader who recently came across your book in Korean. I love the world of your novels. I am trying to get Korean books and read them. I cannot help but love your writing because the language you speak, the psychology that describes Christian values people is so beautiful and pure. thank you. For reminding me of the inspiration for purity, faith and love in me. I will always support you from now on
Is anyone else imagining the owl spirit from Avatar: The Last Airbender, in response to John's comments about owls taking over?
Honestly? Wan Shi Tong would not want to be in charge of a group of people unless they were able to prove they valued research but if he was going to be in a significant position of power in a government then he'd probably be chill? Like, y'all don't start wars, and we will mitigate damage.
I certainly am now, and not at all sorry for it.
Hmm, more funding for Libraries... As a former librarian I'm okay with this.

I’ve missed question tuesday❤️❤️❤️
John, i have no other words to describe you than, I love you and I seriously appreciate how you educate us with things that schools or life failed to do, the perspectives that you share and how they make the world slightly brighter. Thanks for everything :)
Fun fact: The Green brothers shared a hug on my 18th birthday. I don’t know why, but that made me happy.
Happy Belated Birthday! Hope it's a good year!
flawedmind Thanks! Honestly adulthood has gotten off to an uncertain start, but I do still have a great support system of family and friends and a place to live. Stay safe!
The most powerful advice I can remember receiving is when someone yelled at me to STOP WORKING AND GO LIE DOWN.
Take a break, John, take a break.
And probably yell at Hank to do the same.
additional question: how do i not feel like i'm wasting my youth while i rot at home incessantly?
Learn a new language, read a book, reorganize your space. Pretty much do anything that lets you feel productive!
Yep
learn!
Time to email dear Hank and John
Now that I've gone through childbirth, I'm even more excited about the momma and infant support from PIH. Keep it up y'all! ♥️ The right support IS life changing. My son lost a ton of weight after birth and without a medical support network, we would have suffered so much. Thanks again for being awesome.
Definitely going to use "I'm going on vacation because my brain requires it" next time I need a mental health day!

This confused me for a second, but then I realized that people can't fly.

I’m just confused by the part where your brother is not in your “immediate family”.
I think he must've understood the question to mean people he doesn't live with
He did question it in text in the video for a second, but immediate could really be his wife and kids now
Cause if hank is his immediate family, what does he call the family he have with his wife and kids..
First immediate & second immediate? lol.
@@shakibzz I'd say they're all equally immediate.
I think in the context of the question immediate family is the people you live with, because they’re the only people you’re supposed to hug with the social distancing rules, and I think the intent of the question was to ask about the impact of social distancing on John’s recent hugs.
Hank lives on another plane of existence
That's why it's not "immediate"
(John's plane has brain chemistry illness, but Hank's plane has bowel response illness)
I am so very happy that John is taking some time off. Let us all remember to take care of ourselves in these trying times. Do something that makes you happy and gives you a break from the crisis, whether it be reading, going for a walk or baking a cake. You matter, and you need care!
"I am taking next week off because my brain requires it" should be a perfectly acceptable reason to take time off even when life is "normal"
I think in the context of the question immediate family is the people you live with, because they’re the only people you’re supposed to hug with the social distancing rules, and I think the intent of the question was to ask about the impact of social distancing on John’s recent hugs.
Thanks for that poem link, John. It's true. Optimism is good, but it is hollow if it's based on forgetting all loss, pain, and failure.
