Can’t believe 31 + years since the pen flip. Full circle, glad Dave did this. He impacted generations on Saturday nights. Ron is a stand up guy for listening to his buddies and pushing CBC to to do this and it made for a great segment.
dave hodge hockey night in canada you just described most of my childhood. Crazy memories for sure. Thanks Mr Hodge you are still one of the classiest sportscasters ever.
Saturday nights, 8pm, CBC, Dave Hodge, Brian McFarlane, Howie Meeker, Bob Cole, Danny Gallivan and the Hockey Night in Canada theme with everyone gathered around the tv.
That theme song is synonymous with HNIC, CBC and Canada. Sad not only that CBC and the creator couldn't come up with a deal, but that TSN purchased it.
I always liked Dave because he was there saying things that he wasn't suppose to say before Grapes. In a way he set the table for Don to come in and be the way he was. I thought he still worked at TSN doing that show The Reporters. I hope HNIC bring Dave back in for spots on Saturday Night, and I thought the Jackets looked great. I became 10 years old all over again seeing those Baby Blue Jackets
The legend Dave Hodge was fired for complaining live on-air about cutting from a live playoff game to a newscast that could broadcast anytime. Later they cheaped out on paying for the original HNIC theme.
Never seen Dave hodge like that. Remember when he would get pissed at a game that was in OT or was a big deal being cut short for news at 6 or something else. Almost seems like he's tearing up. Great conversation. Two smart, talented guys that give a shit about hockey. Not just there for a paycheck.
For decades, every young play-by-play hockey announcer in North America (including the U.S.) who called local radio broadcasts or cable-access telecasts of hockey games (even high-school games in the 'States or Junior games in Canada) dreamed of someday wearing the blue "Hockey Night In Canada" blazer. For about ten years, I did play-by-play of high-school hockey for a local cable-access channel in my hometown near Boston, and yes, I did daydream about someday wearing the "HNIC" blazer. During that time, at the Class Day of one of the high schools whose hockey teams I covered at the time, I was even included in the senior class's "Class Will". The "Will" stated that they had "left" for me "a play-by-play job with 'Hockey Night In Canada', with assignments to include the Stanley Cup Finals". When I heard that, I was thrilled.
Wonderful! I don't get to see HNIC any longer. Don't have cable TV and can't get the CBC over the airwaves any longer. This is as close as it gets for me. I am thankful that it has been shared. God bless.
When I first heard Rob McConnell & The Boss Brass (Another under appreciated Canadian treasure) play the composition "Blue Hodge" I assumed it was in tribute to Dave Hodge and HNIC. In reality it's dedicated to altoist Johnny Hodges, but the song's intro will forever remind me of Dave and those blazers, and Canada.
Mar. 14, 1987 was when Dave was fired from HNIC. This ban for him lasted for 31 years, 8 months, 1 week, & 3 days, or 11,578 days. And it's really cool and awesome that that ban has now died. Hopefully, Dave can float in from time to time to help make up for lost time for him, and to give him his proper closure. Saturday, November 24, 2018....the day that the CBC finally forgave Dave for his small sin. < = ' )
Dave Hodge, u are the man of class. U are are a real sports caster. Better then Ron or Don. I remember that night when cbc cut the OT Habs vs Flyers. U have class my friend. God bless u
I live across the river from Sarnia and the cable providers do not offer CBC. I cannot watch hockey night in canada anymore. I used to use an old tv with rabbit ears but they went digital also. Its a drag
Hi Dave, you and I were the shortest guys in our grade 9 class. You became the best CBC sports announcer bar none. CBC made a big mistake letting you leave HNIC.
Dave Hodge was a fixture in Canadian homes for so long. He along with Howie Meeker defines what HNIC really was. I hate seeing the stooge that sits with Ron every Saturday night. He's a legend in his own mind, that's it. Dave and Ron should work together again.
Fenway, I was wondering if you could add the date of Sat., Mar. 14, 1987 to either this video's title or the description? It was that night that this Pen Flip happened...the game between the Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens ended in a 3-3 draw, for the record. o.o
the Hodge days were the glory days of HNIC, not this clusterfuk now, they lost the theme for fuk sake... pathetic and shameful God bless Dave Hodge and the old guard !
My dad has watched since the 60s, I've watched since the 90s and I must say the show now isn't worth watching. Unfortunately like anything else politics take over and ruin history.

What a voice thank you Mr. Hodge

I love how he got a shot in about the theme song. Another huge mistake in the history of HNIC.
Ron with the squirrel face at the theme music comment lol

It's a same shame hnic doesn't have THEIR theme on the broadcast, but what's the whole story on how they lost it?

gdmccullough I love the Reporters. I believe it was cancelled last year unfortunately
I thought The Reporters was the last bastion of great sports journalism

Blayne Tyler Knowlton Nash (who was anchoring The National at the time) didn’t like waiting...as opposed to Dan Rather a few months later!
You can't say what he said, on air, about your employer, and not expect to be fired. Regardless of your feelings, regardless if you are right.

The magic of youtube you can see full HNIC telecasts from the Dave Hodge era
Icons. True icons and we love you guys from Buffalo.
David Hodge is a legend.
CLASS….to Dave and Ron..thank you !

My Childhood years . I was 8 years old when they wore the iconic baby blue
Miss that song bigtime
I miss Dave Hodge !

If you didn’t get chills after hearing the sign off you’re not a real person
Nailed it, Chris. The sign off was the trigger. He sure seems to still fit in that role.
@@mikestevenson576 ... yes, he did nail it. Dave Hodge was a true journalist. You don't get chills from being politically correct.
I am not even from that generation, but I felt as though this guy should've always been on there. His voice sounds to legendary.
OMG... this brings back so many memories of my younger years. Dave should be in the HHOF
This is amazing! Hodge, a legend.

Right up there with the CFL orange blazers
Dave Hodge I could listen to him on any modern broadcast he’s very good go to this day.
It's giving me goose bumps
an icon from my childhood and a class act :)

Hodge was and still is my favourite HNIC anchor.
Dave Hodge Pen Flip was the best thing that happened in CBC History.

Loved Dave Hodge’s bluntness and non-biased commentary all thru my hockey loving life! Funny tho 😂 how bad Ron Maclean’s jacket has been fitted🤦♂️
Love this
I just found this video 🧡
Incredible class.
good sense of humour
Dave Hodge was and is the BEST. What a classy guy... Now can we get Peter puck back?❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Better get those jackets tailored better.
Classic. Hodge, Gallivan, Meeker, McFarlane & Peter Puck. Funny how those jackets were horrible back then and they come back.
feels like home

So what was so bad that got him fired?
Hi, I'm Dave Hodge.
Well, at least there's now an actual team in the NHL called the "blue jackets".
the twitter generation would not understand a thing these that two legends are talking about.
Hodge was on the first Coaches' Corner with Don Cherry.
Miss the original HNIC theme
Love ya Dave Hodge!
That as sure nice to see.
incredible
Holy sh#t !!!!!!!....26 !!!...he looked 39 !!!!!!
Just show the God Damned Canadiens vs. Flyers overtime will ya!
Crazy, this was clearly very hard for him. Some things are unforgivable.
That sure is a sharp jacket.
I admire Dave Hodge
I miss the old days.....
Long live HNIC!!
I love dave
This is not to bash Ron who is a legend but Dave has been my fav HNIC host & I think CBC did him dirty, fired because of a pencil flip good god.
Let Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame!
I guess we add Donald S Cherry and Bob Cole to that list.
Ron Maclean is such a class act and so Canadian (humble). Dave still has a tinge of bitter. Great interview.
Seems Dave Hodge's voice sounds a lot like Vic Rauter's.
Wow! Good call
in HODGE S can the sword was mightier than the pen...and he got cut

Bring back Peter Puck.

Go Sabres!
Ron's a knob
Hey McDoornoob when are you going to resign in discrease?
Always liked Mr. Hodge. Mclean not so much.

Ron McLean was a complete letdown from Dave Hodge. He was a jerk then and proved he was a jerk Judas in 2019
