Just another day at the office when it comes to clearing snow off the roads with my grader. This time it was at night. Did anyone notice I had a new color hoodie on??

Par for the course lol. Supposed to be -26 F here tonight. -32c . And we just got dumped on the last 3 days. Now the cold is here. My plow truck starting to show wear in the cold! Good video 👍

As a grader operator there is nothing quite like the feeling of starting out in a grader plowing snow before daybreak in the morning. I’ve operated them both in the arctic and now on the east coast and it’s still my favourite thing to operate.
I hear ya! It is nice to be out when no one else is and all you have to deal with is the snow.
Light, fluffy snow is such fun to plow.

Love that wing for pushing those banks out and back. I'm in NW Minnesota and we have about 30" for the year already.
Yeah the wing is a huge help for making a single pass and opening up the road.

I can remember doing this with a CAT 12 in the mid 70's rolling snow for Weyerhaeuser, all logging roads though, no public roads and no wing. My work was pretty simple compared to what you are doing.
I would love a job like that where I didnt feel like I was under so much pressure
It is amazing what a motor grader can do with snow removal. I worked for CAT in the Decatur, IL plant where graders were started in 1955. They moved the graders to Little Rock in 200?. Our maintenance people did the snow plowing on the property and two city streets leading to the plant. They generally used 16's(a bit of overkill in my mind) and it was hilarious what a 16 would do to curbs.

@@frankshomestead I had the chance to drive every model of grader except the 24. I encountered some get folk on CAT graders on our vacation trips. I was a supervisor on the finish paint line for two years when the articulated graders and 777 dump truck 75 ton capacity were introduced. They put the bed on the first truck to take it to ConExpo in Vegas. When we took it off the paint line we had to take it out a side door in the bldg that wasn't as wide as the front doors. I had an employee working overtime that night. I had been ordered to take the machine out so the paint would set better. I told Jim to take it out and he refused but said he'd ride the far right side to make sure "I" didn't run it into the door frame and away we went.....

Nice job on the video. We’re in central Saskatchewan and have about the same amount of snow now. Cold temps could take a hike though. Was bordering on -40 here for a while. Waiting for warmer weather to take the snowmobiles out again.

Heck ya pard, I've got 9 years as a county operator in central oregon (until Thursday then we're moving to Montana) and wingin in a grader is my favorite by far! Sadly this season they're buying a brand new 16M with full snow package and I've wanted to run a 16M so bad I could taste it for years. Oh well, one day haha. 163 H Cat machine is the only wing grader until this season and the wing is almost to big as we do 90% paved roads but it's better than not having one!

New sub here I’m from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 in the snow belt if Buffalo gets lake snow so am I lots of it first snow fall this year was about 32” 🤪. Love the video I’ll be going to check the rest

Cats are so nice. They have a little more weight to them then the JD`s. I backed off the bank twice last week in a snow whiteout and the all wheel drive got me out.

I fell asleep one time in 6th gear. The blade ricocheted me off a telephone pole. I spun almost all the way around on a 4 lane road. Lol
Luckily it was middle of the night.
I think it was same night earlier my partner hit a snow covered road plate in front of me cutting the center pass in his 130. When he landed it had sheared the turn table motor shaft. Good times. 😅

I would put a block heart in your cooling system and it just might keep the Hydraulic warm enough. Be safe and god bless you
It does have block heater. Now that it has warmed up no issues.
It's been dumping snow lately in the area north of Spokane.
Well I for one am ready for it to stop. I got maint. and snow berm issues I need to get taken care off.

Awesome video! What are the pros and cons of plowing with a grader vs a truck?
Good question. Pros -can cut ice and compacted snow down to road base and clear the whole road using a wing. Cons - slower, can't carry gravel, chains are a lot heavier.
I operate a motorgrader in sw mo. Thank goodness we hardly ever have to push snow😁.

How do you put the center blade into “float” do you just flip the switch in the cabtbat says center lock pin or something like that?
on this model of 77bh all you have to do is push the levers all the way forward until they lock into float position.
Really enjoy your video. We live up at 4500' in E. WA in the mountains and I'm thinking about finding a motor grader to help clear 6 miles of driveway. If you had a blade in the front do you believe it would power through 5' drifts all chained up? I'm using a backhoe now along with a neighbors cat but it gets challenging. Much thanks
The other 772 BH that my co-worker uses has a V-blade and it is what he uses for the deep drifts.
@@frankshomestead if you happen to have a suggestion on model/size that would be great. Or if you happen to hear of one that comes up for sale I would greatly appreciate it. Of course looking for something that is reasonable for cost if that exists. ;)
@@almosthomeranch8447 Hard to say what size you would need. Plus there alot of different brands..Cat, john deer, volvo, etc. Auctions are a good place to look for equipment though.

Tried it. The LED lights reflect off the snow too much. Too much glass. I did put some on a plow truck and it worked really good.

Really enjoyed your video! Could you somehow wrap that hydraulic block (area) that tends to freeze? Does it give you problems while your operating or just at home shut down? Do you take along any precautions (survival equipment) in case of breakdown in an out-of-the-way place? Do you always have the ability to call for help? Have you ever had the fuel filters gel up and restrict fuel flow? That has happened to me. That forced me to pay more attention to properly conditioned fuel. Railroad crossings and man-hole covers demand attention! Do you mostly work the blade in float position? I don’t remember using float much but that sounds like a good method. Very interesting; as I said “brings me back to good memories”. Rich
Thanks rich! In a nutshell...I do carry some basic tools, heavy coat, cell phone for when I am in a service area. Most people are within walking distance for phone use also. I use the float quite a bit, the valves only give me problems when it is really cold at home but once they warm up they are fine. Before winter I always do a full filter and oil service and I do use a fuel additive as needed for fuel gelling. so far it has not been a problem. This new rout I have does not have any covers or crossings but my old one did and I had to be cautios when going over them.
could you use a wire wrap or heater blanket to keep the valves warm when parked?
@@destinationom Well it may be possible but all it takes is about 3 min to heat and unfreeze the valves.

In a normal sized road do you usually always do 2 passes with wing?
If necessary. The wider I can get it each snowfall the better so then I don`t have to take a good day and widen roads

My route is Sandersrd, Old Sanders and the off roads
Ask the bosses to buy a couple of those cheap Chinese diesel heaters....
with a hood to go over that wing valve body...to drive out the moisture 24/7...

I have been trying like a mad man to get one for this machine for months prior to winter. Can`t seem to get them on the same page. I guess it is because they don`t have to do it.
That sounds like politicians. Some morning at 4 am when you are stuck call the chairman to come help.

i noticed you're running your hazards, which i don't doubt is a safety precaution, does the grader not have beacons?

It did have a beacon but i always put on the hazards as well.
