Glad to see you didn’t have the same issues as I had when fitting on the roof , wasn’t just me but someone else had same issues when trying to fit the roof to the cab with huge gaps
@@ModelNerd yeh I did everything else fitted really well. I’m doing mine as ice cold in Alex but will use the gecko decals for this one rather than kit supplied ones
Thanks. Yes, increasingly I like to look at archive photos of the vehicles I build as they often throw up something interesting or unusual - even if it is just an odd camo pattern or the way the crew added stowage.
Thank you I've been looking forward to this 😊. I don't watch very many of other model UA-cam guys. I enjoy yours because you cover things that others don't seem to include. I should support your channel.
Thank you Guy, I'm glad you liked it. You are supporting my channel - viewing, subscribing, commenting is all supporting and is massively appreciated :)
Yes, there are definitely a couple of variants. I wonder if Airfix will release them. I haven't had chance to check the Gecko kits, but they do sell at least two different versions, maybe three.
oh well I am going to have to get this kit now. I love that camo scheme and the stripes. It's a great variation from plain colours. I think another build would be the ambulance from the film "Ice cold in Alex" with Sylvia Syms and John Mills. It's a pity it doesn't have an engine as a diorama with an open bonnet could be good. Still, it's not a difficult scratch build to make an engine.
Great build and looks really good. I done couple of smaller AirFix kits which I enjoy but my painting is not good with a brush and it spoils the outcome.
Thanks mate. For the brush painting, which paints are you using? I started out brush painting and had a lot of problems at first. I found priming the model before painting made a big difference. I also found Vallejo paints to be the best (thinned with a little water). Tamiya acrylics really don't brush very well at all.
I think Humbrol have their own thinner but you can also use water. I'd experiment with different amounts of water and see what works best for you, maybe evening starting with just a damp brush rather than adding water to the paint in the palette. Thin enough that you don't get brush strokes. Thin coats, probably multiple coats, will be best. Also bear in mind that some colours are harder to paint than others (e.g. white, yellow, red are always a struggle to get coverage).
I see the RAF version you showed had solid door not a canvas type... could be a different version which will use those extra windows on the clear sprue... we shall all see hey.
Yes, I think there are a number of subtly different versions out there. There also seems to be a version that has a canvas door but then a canvas "window" above it too, half covering the window space.
There has been some negativity with this kit....but just on one point , I recently made a first kit in decades of a Geecko Quad tractor with a full engine which is in the end unseen in side unless you turn it upside down ..so for me this kit is the one for me.....& I'm making it as a 43Rd Wessex Div , to go with my 179th FR RA collection....My Dads regiment.
I haven't read much about it but I agree - no point building (and spending money on) details you aren't going to see. I really liked this kit and thought the build was great. Didn't see much about the Gecko either but bending those PE stretcher rails put me off.
I haven't seen that version, but the Airfix kit definitely went together very easily. Nice design and although the two piece walls and roof may seem odd, they assist with painting.
Thanks Paul. I'm not sure about the figures...maybe somebody will come out with a set? But given licensing / image rights I would imagine the small indie companies or maybe 3D printing places would be the best bet.

Stunning paint job, would you recommend VMS varnish?, I am thinking of switching but not sure which brand to use, have used both Tamiya and AK but not 100% happy with eithet
Thanks Anthony. I'd thoroughly recommend VMS varnish. I used to use Tamiya rattle cans but I wouldn't go back now. The VMS stuff seems to go a lot further (less waste compared to the rattle can) and the flat is soooo flat, it's great stuff.
Hi MN, very nice build. As for the decal problem: have you tried putting on a big blob of Mark Fit before applying the decal? It prevents the decal to stick to the model immediately and helps sliding it in place.
Thanks mate. Yes, I tried some Mark Fit but it seems to affect the paintwork when using AK Real Colours and VMS varnish. I've just moved to these from Tamiya products, which of course weren't really affected by their own decal solution.
Thank you mate, I'm glad you enjoyed it. As for the Lancaster, I'm not sure how much help I can be. If you've seen my recent video you'll have seen that I couldn't decide either and ended up doing both. However, I do personally have a fondness for the standard Bomber Command scheme. As a side note, I'll be doing a Grand Slam version myself sometime, which may well have its own scheme that is slightly different.
Glad to see you didn’t have the same issues as I had when fitting on the roof , wasn’t just me but someone else had same issues when trying to fit the roof to the cab with huge gaps
I have only dry fitted them so far, but they looked OK. Did you enjoy the kit apart from that?
@@ModelNerd yeh I did everything else fitted really well. I’m doing mine as ice cold in Alex but will use the gecko decals for this one rather than kit supplied ones
Looks great. I enjoy Red Cross scenes. It shows the hardest workers on the field.
Thanks. Yes, definitely a group not often covered.
Beautiful paint job!! I can't wait to see the truck when its weathered!!
Thanks. The final video has been uploaded to my channel now :)
Excellent job, MN....amazing camo scheme and such a historic vehicle given its association with Princess Elizabeth such a long time ago.
Thank you Robbo. Next part coming "soon" :)
Great video. Especially appreciate the sharing of photos as beginning. Really helps set context for the build 👍

Nice build! Thanks for sharing. Happy days and model on! 😎🇨🇦
Thanks Peter, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
great build !looking forward to next instalment
Thanks! 👍 I'm actually kind of stuck for how to present the final model - what context and with which figures :)
Great walkthrough, can’t wait to start mine once I get to it..thanks for sharing

Looks very nice! Will be doing one of these. Hoping that someone like Airfix or Gekko might revisit the WC54 to replace the very old Italeri offering.
Ah yeah, that would be cool
I noticed on the RAF version, it had, what appeared to be, metal doors on the cab.
Yes, there are definitely a couple of variants. I wonder if Airfix will release them. I haven't had chance to check the Gecko kits, but they do sell at least two different versions, maybe three.

@@ModelNerd yes it has a full engine and scale removable panels

@@ModelNerd using the Humbrol acrylics paint that does not brush well and probably needs thinning.
Yes, I'd say it probably needs thinning. The Humbrol Gen 2 paints are supposed to be better - I have some which I need to do a test video for soon.
@@ModelNerd do you know how to thin is it water or paint thinner?

@ 9:40...I think they were in improvised haz mat gear to keep body lice, amongst other things, off of themselves.
Yes, I think you're right

I think you will find the camp was Belsen
Yes, you're right. There are a few photos from it in Wikimedia Commons.
Hello mate! I’ve been taking a break off of modelling for a while, getting back on top of things now, might get a small tank, plane etc
Hi mate. Yeah, some of the smaller tanks and the Airfix starter sets are always good for that kind of thing.
Looks a more user friendly kit than the Gecko version 👍👍
I haven't seen that version, but the Airfix kit definitely went together very easily. Nice design and although the two piece walls and roof may seem odd, they assist with painting.
it is! am in middle of the gecko -1st kit after 30 years _relearning an awfull lot
