I was there, on that day, just 16 years old, sitting infield bleachers between turn 3 and 4 with my late beloved uncle. RIP Uncle Lyle, I think about you all the time and miss you so much these days, buddy!
Arie is one cool dude. Everything about him just oozes race car driver. It was a great day for him and his Dutch countrymen. I was in the infield for this race and the party was just getting started when the race ended. I think there were only two caution flags the whole race. I'll be sittin' on the bricks with my son this year. Can't wait!
Amazing, at 2:20 Paul Page/Sam/Bobby stay quiet for almost a full two minutes (over two laps) and just let the race unfold on its own. No blabber-mouth, no "Boggity" no mindless babble. They just let the beautiful sounds of those turbo engines tell the story. And who needed all those overbearing graphics? It's nice to know the standings, but back then we got full-screen views all the time, and we still knew who was leading.
Great to hear the commentating team of Paul Page, Bobby Unser and Sam Posey again! Page's passion for the race always came through and listening to Bobby and Sam argue about things was always fun too. The commentating team they have now does a reasonable job but I miss these days.
Arie's holding of nearly every speed record is one of the reasons he is still known as "The Flying Dutchman!!!" Always has, and always will be one of my heroes of the speedway.
I was at the race last year (2009) and EVERY car had Honda on the air inlet.. I miss all the Chevy, Buicks etc.. The sounds of those cars is one of the things that made Indy INDY. Now they sound more like NASCAR.
Arie later said that Fittipaldi was pestering him at the end, trying to unlap himself, and he didn't want to deal with the distraction. When Emmo passed him on the mainstretch, Arie says he didn't see the white flag. Back then they didn't have spotters and didn't talk much on the radio, so he didn't know it was the last lap. Seeing the checkers the next time around was a pleasant surprise.
Greetings from California. 🏁💨 Yeah I enjoyed the hell out of this race. There was a handful of drivers that I wanted to win this race. Not in any particular order: Gary Bettenhausen ✝️ Tom Sneva 🏆 (1983) Bill Vukovich III ✝️ Arie Luyendyk 🏆🏆👍 Mario Andretti 🏆 (1969) John Andretti ✝️ Jeff Andretti DNQ This race is very significant because: - it was the first win for a Dutchman. And as with Takuma Sato's victory, it was an absolute joy to watch. - his pace broke a 1971 average speed record by over 20mph!! - his victory coming off the heels of Emerson Fittipaldi's win in 1989 gave the Indy 500 & CART a _HUGE_ boost of interest in the sport because it was someone outside of America - in other words it wasn't another common win for Mears, the Unsers or any other repeat winners. 👍 This reminded me of what it must have been like when Jim Clark won in 1965, followed by Graham Hill's win in 1966. - last but not least - this is the only Indianapolis 500 with nearly 2 minutes of natural sounds (of only the cars blasting around the speedway). All of the above mentioned is why this is one of my top 3 favorite Indianapolis 500s.
5:36 shows the neat pitside fuel tank...painted to look like a Coca-Cola can. Great broadcast won a Sports Emmy that year...however, again terrible camera work at the finish. They picked up Fittipaldi by mistake from the Tower Terrace camera...then cut to the flagman...and we never saw Arie cross the finish line....a preview of the 1992 finish camera debacle.
"Arie Luyendyk finishes the fastest Indy 500 race to date." Not anymore, my friends. The most unbreakable record in the history of the Indy 500 IMHO has finally been broken.
truly beautiful. It couldn't happen nowadays :( a) because 2 minutes is about the biggest gap between adds! b) cars don't sound spellbinding anymore but mainly because of c) marty reid and the dumb ESPN jerks would be talking and joking and treating the 500 like some sort of weekend joke sport.
The Meadowlands GP stopped in 1992 And Indy Car racing isn't just about the 500, what about the races at Long Beach, Cleveland, Surfers Paradise, and Milwaukee
What I would give to hear this bellow note at Indy again... they were just magical to listen to. Screw whoever thought it was a good idea to go to V6's. They don't even sound half as good compared to this.
agreed, todays IRL cars look more like F1 cars than IndyCars. Man why did Tony George have to ruin openwheel racing in America. I mean it's good that they were finaly able to reconcile after all this time but man, the time and things that have been lost...
God I'm glad that crybaby Bobby Unser is not covering the Indy 500 anymore! He cheated Mario out of a Indy victory in 81 and his voice sounds like a little girl.
More like a cranky old man living off the I-10 in western Arizona operating a broken down gas station with a small house attached to it. _"GET BACK IN THE HOUSE PA!!"_
The sound.. My God, the sound of those things back in the day! It just hits different. 😍
The 2.65L Turbo engines just have that nice sound when running fully open don't it.
I loved that sound!
Gosh those cars were beautiful and had an amazing sound. Don't get me wrong, I love today's cars, but nothing will ever beat these to me.
I agree about the old cars, but not the new.
I heard that!
I was there, on that day, just 16 years old, sitting infield bleachers between turn 3 and 4 with my late beloved uncle. RIP Uncle Lyle, I think about you all the time and miss you so much these days, buddy!
I just loved the sound of the Indy Cars of that era!
2:21- 4:08 = official soundtrack of my childhood
Arie's car colors were classic, what a memorable car.
Red white bleu.. Dutch flag colours :)
I still miss the sound of these engines.
Love it when the announcers shut up and you can just listen to those Turbochargers Screaming!!!! I miss those days, Indy racing at its best.
Arie is one cool dude. Everything about him just oozes race car driver. It was a great day for him and his Dutch countrymen.

doctorindy Sam Posey is horrible. I always loved when Bobby told him he was wrong all the time lol
Is great but most probably an ad break
@@CFAUV3L I believe it was during the live feed.
It's definitely not an intentional good will gesture of natural sounds that's for sure. ABC never did this before and they never did it since.
Great to hear the commentating team of Paul Page, Bobby Unser and Sam Posey again! Page's passion for the race always came through and listening to Bobby and Sam argue about things was always fun too. The commentating team they have now does a reasonable job but I miss these days.
I love the few laps that the commentators didn't speak...kind of serene listening to the turbo Chevy...Thanks CC!
Those fly-by shots at the beginnin of the video are friggin' awesome.
same here :) miss it so much
Arie's holding of nearly every speed record is one of the reasons he is still known as "The Flying Dutchman!!!" Always has, and always will be one of my heroes of the speedway.
Mine too.
I miss Paul Page doing the play by play. He's got all of the good stories.
The V8 Cosworth amazing sound.
This was a sweet win.
those indy cars back then sounded much better than they do now. and i dont really even know that much about indy.
This was the year everyone, except for Luyendyk, had issues with blistering tires. Still, it was good to see him finally win.
Many Dutch were so lucky watching this as it was covered live in The Netherlands
It's John Andretti. Guererro was running for Pat Patrick in the Alfa Romero that year.
Arie was fantastic. He is still the fastest man on Indy with a qualifying record of 237.498 mph in 1996.
Still true 13 years later
Simple F-A-S-T... 8-)
Thanks again CC, great addition!
Wow, what an upset! What greater way to win your very first Indy Car race than to win the biggest of them all!
Thanks for this clip, champcar4ever.
I was at the race last year (2009) and EVERY car had Honda on the air inlet.. I miss all the Chevy, Buicks etc.. The sounds of those cars is one of the things that made Indy INDY. Now they sound more like NASCAR.
Awesome sound.
Bring back the Turbo Chevy/Ford V8s.
Screw Honda/Yoda.
You gotta love seeing a driver's first win.

What better way to win your first Indy Car race than winning the biggest?
I'm still proud of Arie. The sound from his Chevy engine..pppffftt

😁 Same. Whenever I go on this video I watch/listen to it 5 or 6 times. Must be about 100 times or more that I listened to it lol.
Honda is one of the companies supporting the unified IndyCar Series.
1.The word on the street is turbos in 2010
2.This win was a popular one.
The voice of indycar mr.paul page

Three words Tony: TURBOS in 010!
Bobby Unser ...lol....his voice is so distinct.

"He Turned Last Lap at 217.8 He is Flying" thats was famous line from paul page.

great news btw Chevrolet, and Lotus/Cosworth will be back for 2012 and of course Turbo chargers
Great sound.
That's what I never got about the IRL. What the hell needed 'fixing' with that noise and those cars???
The average speed was record:
185.981 MPH
299.307 KPH

@LaserX5 You're right Laser! Tony George's ego and incompetence has probably ruined a once great racing series for life!
@fleshwoundNPG chevy and lotus are making their return for 2012 with v6 turbos, though honda will remain unfortunately
I was there infield turn 3
Why are we guys mad at Tony George? Do you have a few hours? He personally screwed everything up. Period. You have to be blind to not see that.
CART was the shit man, it deserved (much) better
you got this from tbk.
Not really. Check out the post dates. It's the other way around but it doesn't matter. Same person.
Tire are smaller on "inside" to get faster...
How many hp did / Do they have?
+Nino Schier Around 850 in 1990
kojakbungeebungee And how fast do they get
+Nino Schier 362 km/h or 225 mp/h fastest qualifying so probably around 385 km/h or 240 mph as a maximum top speed.
are you a member on tbk?
Mieke has some "soup cooler" lips ....... beautiful woman ...
Nobody cares.
Indy car racing was the bomb until Tony George's ego ruined it.
Bernie Ecclestone was true ruiner of old CART/Indycar.
