Thanks for all of this info Gruff! I haven’t got any bees yet, but have signed up and have sent an application off to my local association.

Considering keeping bees as a hobby... they have always fascinated me. I am watching your videos to get a feeling of what is required, how I would look after them to keep them healthy and how much time is required to manage a small hive. Your videos are very informative and have passion, well done! Next step for me is to join my local bee keeping association (Essex), although I might wait until year end as their subscription year is Jan to Dec. Keep up the entertaining videos!

You know I have never done been keeping but grow tons of flowers and pollination plants but watching your videos has encouraged me to do this one day if I can afford some more land. Thank you for your videos.

    Hi Folks,
Thanks for accepting me into the group. Newbie beekeeping couple.
Caught two swarms in bait hives. 15th May big prime swarm with laying queen. Marked and clipped her. Lovely, quiet black Irish AMM.
28th May new swarm in same spot. Inspected after week and no action. No brood but laying down some stores. Covering 3/4 frames. Could not see queen. Guessing maybe cast with virgin.
Inspected again today, but still no brood or sign of queen (maybe on maiting flight as weather has not been great until today). Is it a queen or patience we need? Thanks

Add a frame of eggs into the hive from the other hive,
If they draw queen cells they haven’t got a queen if they don’t there is still a viable queen in there.

Good advice, I can give myself two ticks, ✅✅. Don’t have any colonies yet (until spring) but have registered with Beebase as having zero colonies but that means that I get their emails and access to all the website.

Great advice!! Not a bee keeper myself, but seriously looking at it for the future. And for English not being your first language, you're doing a fantastic job conveying your ideas!! Keep it up!

Really good advice. When I started beekeeping I read a lot of books, then signed up for a beekeepers beginner course at my local beekeepers association, and after that I got my first two hives and bees. I cannot recommend this approach enough, if your local association does a similar course, as it gives you all the basic knowledge, some hands-on training, and a lot of confidence when you start out with your own bees. Also, it gives you a network of people who you can draw on for experience whenever you get issues that you are not quite sure how to deal with yourself.

Sound advice as usual. Do you have any plans to look at laws relating to bee keeping? I think it could make a good topic for a video, even the obscure or ancient - perhaps no longer in law - basis to what we have today.

    • @gwenyngruffydd
      @gwenyngruffydd  3 роки тому +2

Thank you 😊 that’s a good idea!! The laws around Beekeeing is quite low really. Personally I think as a minimum it should be compulsory to be on beebase.
Will look up the laws and see what I find! 😊👍🏻

@@gwenyngruffydd I was aware of certain aspects 'nuisances' via Environmental Health studies/work. One guy ended up with a prosecution for keeping bees, if memory serves, near Newark on Trent. Give me a PM if you do a video and I'll provide whatever info I can. Hwyl.

i started in 2020 and joined a association paid fees and my course was cancelled and the association was closed ive paid my fees again for this year and as there is another lockdown the course has been cancelled again and cant have any meetings again so i don't think its worth it joining one at the moment, i joined bee base as i went ahead with bees caught 2 swarms had a good summer with them but lost one in September and have only been learning from people on youtube

      Hi Roy,
Yea last year was a pain and more than likely this year will be too due to covid.
Still worth joint for the insurance though?
UA-cam is a great place to learn. Lots of good free content out there.
Hopefully the other swarm will make it through winter and you’ll be able to split it to make 2 hives 😊

Do you not think that being registered on Bee Base should be compulsory for all beekeepers.

Personally I do think it should be. That’s how livestock farming is. You need to register to get a holding number then you can farm. Beekeeing should be the same

2 things to do before you get bees.
    1. Don't get bees.
    2. Definitely don't get bees.
