This Arc was a big turning point for the series (more serious tone, several main characters dying, losing Shenron for awhile). King Piccolo walked so the villains of DBZ could run. Happy to see Zeph once again giving respect to another Dragon Ball Arc
Not hating on original db. But it bugs me how the community says Z’s villains were evil for no reason which they weren’t. Besides buu. Even though demon king piccolo is literally evil for no reason.
@@zephfire_16 yea but nowadays if a villain isn’t some edgelord, depressed, or thinks the world is bad and he’s some god there instantly considered lesser. Just annoying
Everyone normally gets excited seeing Goku mad but when he was a kid it's such a sad scene more than anything because in the end Goku really was just a kid. A kid who just found his friend dead on the floor recently murdered. It's not supposed to be used for a factor of people thinking it's cool and I think that's honestly really well done. The first death of one of the main cast members.
Something i really love about DBZ is how the first three arcs are all follow-ups of Dragonball Arcs. The saiyan Saga is a follow up to the initial Pilaf and Budokai Tenkaichi arcs with the mystery surround Goku and the great ape being revealed, the Namek arc is a clear follow up to the Piccolo duology and the Android and Cell Arcs being a follow up to the Red Ribbon Army arc. Its part of the reason so many of these story lines feel significant they're all either context for things that happened in the past or the direct consequences of those things. It's just good writing
I swearrrr, dude no one talks about that scene where Goku realizes he was the great ape that killed Grandpa Gohan when thats like a top 3 character scene for him
@@zephfire_16 Definitely. And you could make a pretty solid argument that part of the reason he chooses to spare vegeta is in honor of his grandfather sparing him and choosing to see the potential in him rather than treat him like a monster.
This was the arc that really put the groundwork for dbz and beyond fr. The higher stakes, characters getting packed up and finally the fights are all more fast paced. Fire arc 🔥🔥
8:20 honestly as I was rewatching OG dragon ball, everything you said about Goku in OG Dragon ball is true. He barely struggles at all and is the true definition of the goku show.
I personaly think goku was already stronger than tambourine in the first fight but was just worn out from the 22nd tenkaichi budokai and his fight with tien
It is his show. He’s the main character. The problem is that Z makes so many promises that Goku gonna pass the torch and he like Kanye he can’t stop hogging the spotlight shits tragic we got robbed
I did a revisit of OG Dragonball a month ago and The King Piccolo Saga is certainly GOATED. A great blend of hard work, pain and struggle and some of the biggest payoff in the whole series. Plus it was great watching Tien evolve from a narcissistic a-hole into a trusted ally/friend of Goku's. Yajirobe was amazing too. 👊🏿💥🐉
This arc started the peak run of piccolo jnr, saiyan saga, frieza saga into cell saga. Can you imagine reading dragonball weekly and Toriyama hits you with 5 arcs that are contenders for the best arc back to back to back for 10 years
It was during quarantine when I first sat down and watched Dragon Ball, DBZ, even GT and Super. DBZ is the most memorable from the spectacle of the fights and the frequently dire situations the heroes are put in, but I couldn’t help but love Dragon Ball more. It’s far more personal feeling with all the characters, (except Chiaotzu he serves zero purpose.) and it’s violent as shit. You brought up another point that I don’t see many talk about, the incorporation of the background really adding to scenes. The King Piccolo arc may just be my favorite in the series as well
Damn man, these videos really are something I look forward to everytime. It's like listening to a close friend geek about their favorite arc, and it never gets old. Love the new perspectives and affirming past ones, awesome stuff man.
I’ve always been a bigger fan of OG Dragon Ball than DBZ (oh lord I’m boutta get jumped 💀) and the King Piccolo Arc was my favourite, so I’m glad you covered it and enjoyed it as much as I did
I’ve been debating on starting my rerun pilgrimage of dragonball z but you’ve convinced to take it a next step and add dragonball to the list. Thank you Zeph, you man of quality
ZEPHFIRE!!!! You've yet to miss, OH MY GOD. I love how much you put respect on OG Dragonball which I will admit I haven't read/watched as much as the other series. Thanks for that and have a DAMN GOOD ONE!!!
Havin just watched og DB like a year or two ago, and now being halfway through DBZ for the first time, this is facts. I already loved this arc, but you just made me love it even more.
I always appreciated this arc as it was the one that made me respect Dragon Ball a lot more than Z. As you said, Goku was more creative and more elements were used to help overcome obstacles. It wasn't just Goku got time to get a zenki boost.
King Piccolo arc was the best arc in original Dragon Ball anime and look really hopeless without the dragon balls. Yu Yu Hakusho took some elements from this arc as well.
@@zephfire_16 yep I agree and like the divine water where almost killed Goku but he got stronger, similarly Yusuke with Genkai spirit orb that almost killed but he got stronger to fight Toguro.

Oh please absolutely do the 23rd WT saga because that is a saga that does give everyone something to do and really is the step forward into Z. From Tien vs Tao and him screaming away Taos blast (one of the coldest scenes in dragonball) to Krillin vs Majunior to Yamcha vs Kami. Everyone really gets a chance to shine and show how they really are special in that arc and I love it. They might not help with the final battle but at least that's the point of that fight. That Goku had to do it himself. My favorite arc in the entire dragonball series easily.
Zeph! You doin the lords work! I love hearing someone talk about OG DragonBall, it was frigging nuts. This video is a ceritified hood classic, I even hear the DQ music, my dude the truth! Godlike stuff man! King Piccola was a savage man.

It's crazy how little Yajorobi got respect. Man took out a villain that folded Goku. I mean not exactly but still a king piccolo minion. And he took out great ape vegeta. He isn't there much but he did amazing
There is a hint of irony in the King Piccolo arc, if you are familiar with the lore. King Piccolo is not only a dark parallel to Kami (being the pure evil to Kami's pure good, after all, they were once the same person, the Nameless Namekian) but also to Goku: -Both are aliens who came from planets in distress and forgot their real names (Namek and Planet Vegeta) being sent to Earth and eventually seeing Earth as their real home. But Piccolo absorbed the worst traits of humanity, whereas Goku absorbed the best traits of humanity. To even drive the nail even more to the irony, Piccolo is a namekian, a traditionally peaceful race, yet is the villain of the story, Goku is a saiyan, a traditionally bellicose race, yet he is the hero of the story. In another story and time, Goku would have been the conqueror and Piccolo the savior. He is what Goku could have been if he embraced his saiyan nature.
