    I originally planned to stay on Utila for about a week, but ended up staying for a month! I got my AOW and Rescue at UDC and would highly recommend. A few places I would recommend visiting is a local food spot on the main road called Mama Rosa’s which has the best baleadas (which is a traditional Central American dish originating in Honduras). You can get a lobster and avocado baleada for less than $5 USD. I would also recommend RJ’s BBQ a little further down the road. They’re famous for their desserts. There’s also pizza night (2 for 1 brick oven pizza) at the Mango Inn and a lot of people go there before heading to Tranquila for free shots. Side note: the shots are really low quality and a lot of people have gotten sick, so be careful. Sea Breakers is a bar along the waterfront and has wonderful homemade pasta. And, Che Pancho is a great Argentine steak house also on the main road. As for sights, I’d recommend visiting the sea turtle nests at Pumpkin Hill Beach and Neptune’s Beach which is a bit of a trek but has a nice beach and a restaurant that serves amazing ceviche! Last but not least, there are many water caves to explore around the island.

      I would recommend contacting BICA first to set up a viewing of the turtle nests and perhaps renting a golf cart or motorbike for a couple hours to get there.

    What a horror Utila has become. 21 years ago I spent a month there and there were a few golf carts, Maybe a few motorcycles. You got around by bicycle or walking. Most people walked. Now it looks like it's a noisy crowded paradise lost.

    • @SurfandTurfTravel
      @SurfandTurfTravel  2 роки тому +2

      Ha! It's all about perspective , we haven't seen Utila before so it seems like paradise for us just because there aren't many big cars on the island )) But we got your point, feel the same about Bali...

      @@SurfandTurfTravel Don;t get me wrong. It still looks like a nice tropical place to visit. but back then it was the cheapest Caribbean island you could visit and getting a diving certificate was the cheapest in the world.

      @@davenelson9505 it still is, you can get your open water for $250 with accommodations

      This lost paradise narrative is myopic. And purely selfish as a tourist. You want things to stay cheap, and you want the area to be primitive for your own personal desire. While the locals are probably hoping for a bit more economic development. As long as development is done thoughtfully, it is not bad

    hi guys! loved this vlog - curious how you got to Utila / if you flew into SAP? My friend and I are hoping to dive there next month:) would love to hear some cheap/safe travel options

      Hi, Amy! We are driving our van from the US to Panama so no flights for us, we used a ferry. but we've met a lot of people who flew to SAP and then used a ferry too. We stayed in Coral view hotel, not cheap, but gorgeous, right new an amazing coral view, but there are lots of different options for a different price in Utila. super safe! enjoy!!!!

      I flew into SAP and took the Cristina bus to La Ceiba. From there I took the ferry to Utila. You’ll have to check what time your flight lands into SAP and if you’ll be able to catch the bus and the ferry all on the same day. The bus from San Pedro Sula takes about 4 hours with one rest stop. The ferry from La Ceiba to Utila departs twice a day. I landed at SAP and spent a night at a hostel (paid about $12-$15 USD). This is a more affordable option than flying into Roatan and taking the ferry to Utila. Also, you should check if your dive shop offers packages that include accommodations (most actually do). Hope this helps!

      @@fantasian88 Hi James! This is super helpful - thanks a ton:) Quick follow-up question: is the Cristina bus typically on time?

    • @fantasian88
      @fantasian88 2 роки тому

      I heard Cristina is supposed to be one of the best in Honduras. As for me, my bus was on-time (and we even encountered a rainstorm on our drive). I would recommend arriving at least one hour before your bus departure time to purchase tickets and check-in your luggage. I would also pick an arrival time about 1.5-2 hours before your ferry departure. Once you arrive at La Ceiba, you’ll need to take a shared taxi called a “cooperativo” and I negotiated 100lps for 2 people to the ferry terminal. It’s too far to walk. Then you have to buy a ferry ticket (which was cheaper online). And then you have to go to a separate kiosk to pay the “ferry tax.” Leave enough time to do all of this and enjoy a lunch at one of the terminal shacks. Last note, the ferry ride was extremely bumpy (and wet), so take some Dramamine if you get seasick.
