  • Part 4 (final) of the Arts and Crafts Bookcase. In this segment I finish the corbels, then put on two finishes, one being a Minwax stain then an Osmo top coat and the other being a complex dye, sealer, gel stain/glaze and General Finishes Armor Seal final top coat. The second finish mimics the "Aurora" finished used (1920's??) by Stickley and is a very traditional finish for white oak in the Arts and Crafts style.
They turned out great. A sketchup model will be available on my website: www.theraven.us (should be available within a week).
Thanks for watching and good luck on all your projects.

Hi James. I've recently gone through my bout of dye/pigment glaze experimentation after watching the Jewitt video on the mission finish. I found that for the 4 step finish over QSWO, one can get the nice antique appearance without that blotchiness that happens when the dye bleeds out laterally from the sides of the exposed open pores by first sealing the wood with a clear oil base such as danish oil (cheaper than Osmo Poly-X for this work), then applying the TransTint over that. This makes it super easy to apply the dye solution evenly, as well as preventing the dye solution from raising the grain.
Thanks for a great 3 part video series.

Thanks for the information. Building a base then a sealed surface is key. I don't often have a need to mimic the mission finish as I think QSWO is so amazing with just modern finishing. It is funny that the classic mission finish was accidental due to storing the wood near straw soaked with horse urine. Now we try and duplicate it.

I find that following Mr. Jewitt’s recommendation for diluting the TransTint dye with distilled water rather than alcohol reduces the lateral “bleed out” of the dye. It gives a beautiful finish.

Excellent video series. I just completed a Mission style bookcase (different design) myself, and would like to try making another like yours. Do you have plans for sale? I am very partial to the Craftsman/Mission style on general.

Helpful … finishing is obviously so essential
    yet so mysterious.

This was a really nice project. I really like your laid back style and video format. It is also nice to see some "hybrid woodworking". I have a very small shop, about the size of a small one car garage, so I can't fit stuff like Incra fences and such that make "perfect off the machine" cuts. So this was a nice inspiration. Cheers.

I just started getting into woodworking and love Mission/Arts and Crafts style furniture. While I am not quite ready to build on this scale, this was a great series of videos, and I will be sure to come back to them as my hobby progresses.
