When playing Resident Evil 2, that little screen was really useful because it would tell you how your health was and how many rounds you had left on your gun. That was really useful for a survival game, i stead of having to check in the menu.
Some of my favorite games originated on the Dreamcast. Code Veronica, my favorite RE game, Sonic Adventure 1&2, and the 2k Sports games are still the best for the most part. That controller was so comfortable to me also.
I fucking love the dreamcast controller, it is really iconic and quite unique. It has great triggers making for some satysfying gaming. For the little memory card-thingie it was an okay idea, nothing to add there. It's somewhat bulky and slippery and the stick isn't really that good (what is really bad for a controller) but it's an okay design overall For the speedboat comment there is a certain character in Sonic racing transformed who's boat form is the dreamcast controlloer. It was fun coming back to this video
People say the the d pad and thumb stick are slippery but I've held a DC controller before and never really noticed myself having that issue then again I'm like Patrick star when it comes to FIRMLY GRASP IT!
DC controller is one of my favorite controllers ever. It was very comfortable and fits the hand. I didn't think the buttons were too slippery, maybe your controller is dirty ;) The VMU was brilliant and it was fun taking it to school and sharing/playing mini games on them with friends. The only problem I found with the controller is that the plug would come out easy, which was because it was made that way so if you yanked on the cord it didn't take the system with it. It was a good thing, but some times annoying when it would pop out.
The Dreamcast wasn't the first controller where memcards had to be put into a controller. The N64 had this with its Controller Pak, though most games could save on the internal cartridge battery. The VMU may look gimmicky, but the fact that you can click 2 VMUs together and transfer saves without a console nearby, is a pretty unique feature.
The dream cast was way out of his prime. The Graphics controls the games music,Everything was before it's time man the greatest system from the late 90's plus the little game pad
I'm surprised. Honestly, while I've been a defiant defender of the Game Cube and N64 controllers as being the best, honestly, the Dreamcast one to me is a very close 2nd. Once I held the controller, I couldn't stop fiddling with the buttons. Honestly to me it's one of the best controllers ever made.
Hi. Any link to modify the D-pad to make it perform better, it's not very accurate nor responsive. It's the best looking console controller to date- looks like a starship fighter and with the VMU, it's like the Mazinger Z of consoles. Thank you.
if the dreamcast was so ahead of it's time - why don't all controllers only have 1 analog stick? why don't all systems have VMUs? why don't all systems use GD-ROMs?
+billy ryan Oh yeah, I remember how I've hurt my thumb playing with the Dreamcast dpad at SF3. That's was awful and quite frustrating because it was not as good as the Megadrive controller.
SolidSnake684 Honestly, I think the PS2 is the best console of its era for fighting games. It got all the major titles as well as lesser known greats such as Garou: Mark of the Wolves. It also got titles not available on the Dreamcast such as Capcom vs SNK 2 (Japan only for Dreamcast) and Street Fighter Alpha Anthology (PS2 exclusive). I think the Dreamcast got a reputation as a great fighting game console b/c it was the first console that could give you an arcade quality experience at home, other than perhaps the outrageously expensive SNK systems. But when it was all said and done, the PS2 came out on top and the only reason to consider a Dreamcast now is the price.
Josh W the ps123 are no the worts for fighting games but the d-pad is awful for specials command. And de location of the right stick is not confortable.
While the Dreamcast controller was revolutionary for a company like Sega, I'm surprised that they -Didn't use the Saturn's D pad -Didn't add in built in rumble, seeing as Sony already did that with the PS1's dualshock -Used a convex analog stick instead of a concave -Only added one control stick, which is strange, seeing as how Sony's PS1 already had two analog sticks -Only had two shoulder buttons instead of four -Didn't make their thumb-stick clickable -Made the cord come out from the bottom instead of the top -When a Dreamcast system is turned off, no signal is sent to the VMUs to shut down, and so operate on their own power source for a short period of time before automatically switching themselves off. If left unchecked, this can cause VMUs to drain power just by being plugged into a Dreamcast console. -Not building the Dreamcast with built in memory (like the Saturn) or a hard drive(like XBOX), thus needing the VMU, which had high manufacturing costs when compared to the PlayStation -Making it so that the VMUs required batteries, instead of being chargable -Making the original VMU with only 128kB of memory, instead of 512kB like the Dreamcast 4x -Making a VMU like microphone instead of a headset Such wasted potential....
At the very least, the cord coming from the bottom is kinda understandable, the top of the thing is occupied for the VMU and accesory slots. The rest I agree.
Crazy thing is, sega always seemed innovative when it came to controllers and online gaming. The dreamcast controller strangely had less buttons than the saturn, ps1, and n64, and got rid of the original d-pad!
Yes if you only nudge the analog stick slightly, the character moves more slowly. But the fact that it's analog means that it works on three dimensions, the x-dimension (right-left), the y-dimension (up-down) and the z-dimension (you can push down on it)
With some games it does, like NFL 2K you can use the VMU screen to pick your plays instead of doing it onscreen that way your friends can't see which play you're picking
@EarthCrash91 But when he turned the dreamcast and xbox 360 controller. And showed the front they both were somewhat identical. Same button layout but all they added was front bumper triggers and a analog stick. I wonder how shooters were on dreamcast? dont you need 2 analog sticks?
Suppose. I actually have a 3rd party VMU which doesn't have a screen but acts as four cards which you can switch between with the tap of a button. It just came with my DC when I ordered it, and I don't think was listed as anything other than a regular VMU in the eBay description, so I scored bigtime there. It'll take a while before I have enough games to fill up 4 cards! I'm only just getting near needing the 2nd one.
One of the main selling points for the VMU was the LCD screen that allowed you to pick plays in NFL2k privately without your competitor seeing which you pick on the tv screen. In some game you could check stats and various other things in game as well.
Another Great Review! I like the dreamcast controller, It seamed like it was designed to fit in your hands, and the button on my controllers never seams to slip off for me, and it DOES look like a speed boat when I put mine upside down, that's pretty cool.
Question: When you replace the batteries on the VMU, do you lose your previous memory (same problem with the battery replacement for the internal memory for the Saturn)
one thing I always likes was how well the grips fit in my hands on the dreamcast controller. also it would be cool if they integrated lcds into controllers in new consoles.. it would make sports games more interesting that is for sure
Intresting thing is that you can still play some awesome classics online on dreamcast like quake 3 while the you cant on the younger new xbox (not a single one)
Wow! All these years and half a dozen DCs I didn't know that VMUs beep was due to being out of batteries. I thought they all just always did that when plugged in to signify they were connected.
Timecode: 5:10 - Why would you play the VMU games? Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure 1/2, Shenmue, 4x4 EVO, Daytona USA, & MANY games allowed you to upload special weapons or whole levels into the game, grow/trade pets (Chaos4 Sonic), racing tracks (4x4 EVO), buy from an online store (Shenmue). In the case of Skies/Arcadia by playing a mini game with Pinta you can transfer items/money he finds into your game. So the VMU served many purposes - plus you can download custom VMU Icons.
I still don't understand why the Dreamcast failed. They say it failed because it couldn't compete with the Ps2, but the Xbox and Gamecube did just fine and they released around the same time as the Ps2.
I just saw a dreamcast at an old game store outdoors and the analog thumb stick isn't slippery at all the digital pad isnt either and no it wasnt a turbo controller
i don't understand why mark said you get a lot of wire on the dreamcast controller, I use to think the gamecube controller wire was short but the dreamcast wire is even shorter.
@rastahattskaters - Yes it can, all games can be played without the VMU but it acts the same way as playing a Playstation game without a memory card plugged in - you can play it perfectly as normal but you won't be able to save any of your games!
Also any mods to make the VMU not use so much battery power even when it's not in use (I wish I could find rechargeable button batteries for the VMUs). Thank you:-) God bless. Matthew 16:18
I thought the VMU was a really cool idea. The most interesting use I've seen it used for was in Virtua Tennis, where you can actually play the whole match just looking at the VMU, since it actually shows a tiny version of what's happening on-screen. It's pretty hard to see, but it adds an unusual new element of challenge to the game.
Directional pads are digital. Since they can only go in 4 (and sometimes 8) directions, they're digital because it's one button press when you press down on any given direction. It's the opposite of an analog stick because they can move in 360 degrees and the analog stick isn't a "button." So a D-Pad can mean either Digital or Directional.
There are loads of Dreamcasts on eBay. I got my Dreamcast, in great condition, with a controller, and 4 games, all for £20, including next day delivery. If you can't use eBay, try looking in local car boot sale, or as doonbugie suggested, at a pawnshop.

Lol at the dog. Awesome show, the best gaming show on the internet.

My favorite controller of all time. A little biased maybe because the Dreamcast is my favorite system of all time.
why

I tried out a DreamCast controller at a Awesome Con. It was comfortable but the thumbstick and buttons didn't feel very good.
I love the smooth way he says "if you forget what game you're playing you could just look at the screen on your controller and it reminds you"
I always thought it looked kinda like a little space ship.
I'm just seeing this video now but that dog was beautiful
Best controller ever. Beyond comfy to hold and plays games like a dream (pun intended)
nope, it was garbage and the exact opposite of comfy
herp derp my name's tbb033 and i can't differentiate subjective opinion from fact
I thought the PS1 had the worst controller until I held a DC.

@@tbb033 Garbage? not compared to the N64 controller.

Yeah me too!
I wish it had a second analog stick though.
Just got a dreamcast today. I think the controller was very comfortable. It looked awkward but it didnt feel as big because of its design.
That controller looks like the USS Enterprise
Maybe if you've never seen Star Trek. If anything it looks more like the reliant or maybe ds9's defiant.
Millennium falcon come on bro
@@tbb033That's an insult to the Defiant, though. That ship was sleek and beautiful. This controller is not.

That feel when RadioShack no longer exist.
I haven't shopped at Radio Shack since 2016. There was on in Petosky, MI then, but it was gone in 2017 :(
There's one somewhere In the pnw
What killed RadioShack was the fact that it never went digital
I've had a dreamcast since I was little and that little slot for the wire just blew my mind! Lmao. I never knew that was there!
Love Dreamcast controller.
00:25 it looks like a speed boat, well in sonic and all-stars racing transformed, the character AGES in boat mode is a dreamcast controller. :)
I actually like the Dreamcast controller's joystick and D pad.
I like the L and R triggers

I'm surprised. Honestly, while I've been a defiant defender of the Game Cube and N64 controllers as being the best, honestly, the Dreamcast one to me is a very close 2nd. While the Dreamcast controller was revolutionary for a company like Sega, I'm surprised that they

I mean they did have the gum like microphone that came with that weird ass game seaman

This is a comfortable controller but the vibration pack and vmu slots on the back impede your finger movement a bit.
Do the buttons and joystick wear out faster or something? I have 4 of the clear colored ones, They seem fine.
one thing I always likes was how well the grips fit in my hands on the dreamcast controller. also it would be cool if they integrated lcds into controllers in new consoles.. it would make sports games more interesting that is for sure

You are 100% right. I loved the dreamcast still have one since 1999 and I never had an issue with the controller not once have my thumbs slipped.
Still classy after all these years. You should include your dog in more reviews.
Modified version of windows ce.Does that mean the games were simply windows ce games but modifiled to play on Dreamcast? I didn't understand
@rastahattskaters - Yes it can, all games can be played without the VMU but it acts the same way as playing a Playstation game without a memory card plugged in - you can play it perfectly as normal but you won't be able to save any of your games!
@rollipolioli What do you not like about the games from Sega?
And wich console do you like?
Does the VMU screen work when it is in the controller and the console is turned on?
isnt the starting music on the main menu music on tony hawks pro skater 3
@Blazingwheel no problem, glad to give you some information

Also any mods to make the VMU not use so much battery power even when it's not in use (I wish I could find rechargeable button batteries for the VMUs). Thank you:-) God bless. Matthew 16:18
So its safe to say that Microsoft based the design of the Xbox controller from the Dreamcast controller right?
That Dog saved the Day ;)
@thefilipinokidutube gamecube had no dvd player, so why did it fail?
@demillara92310 u can use a rumble pak but its not nessary for sonic adventure 1&2
actually the main reson they gave you so little cord on the atari is because some games use the switches on the font of the unit itself
