    I always thought the "pc cards" were more for dos had no idea Windows 95 would run on it. Righteous video as usual.

      There are some limitations and early cards like the Mac286 probably won't run anything past DOS. On these more modern cards I think anything in the Windows 3.x, 95, 98 range will work fine. I've heard that Windows NT might be a problem, and any other OS such as Linux won't work either.

      @@netfreakcanada Makes sense to me, I've seen these run 3.X without much issue.

    If you copy all of the .cab files from the Windows 95 CD to C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS It'll never ask you for the CD again

    The XD-connector is for a serial & parallel expansion card. That card had a ribbon wire that connects it to the XD-connector. It is a pretty are option.
    The GIMO-connector needs a special adapter card that contains some logic. I have only once seen such a cable on eBay.

    Wow DOS is way different from what I remember.

    would be fun to see how an intel based pc or a modern powerpc mac react to the Apple PC Compatiblity PCI card

      I guess they’ll probably ignore it but it could be interesting!

    There is a slot similar to that GIMO slot that allows for an adapter to an external monitor. You have a small PCB that plugges into the slot that connects via a ribbon cable to an external 15 pin monitor cable.

      Yeah it seems like it would be related to some sort of video passthrough if the PC card can use this to bypass the dongle cable requirement.

    The LSI chip is the backplane controller asic. it handles the logic between the slot in the mac and the hardware on the card.

    65scibe has mentioned it on his channel (prominently on his corrections video), but the gimo port basically is just to route the audio and video for the pc compatibility card, forgoing the dongle

      It looks like the original kit would have included the cable to do this internally but unfortunately I don't have it. I did find it mentioned in the manual too but these seem hard to come by.

    While in the PC, pressing cmd-y ejects the cd, and I think cmd-e ejects the floppy.

    The proper thing to do is install dos 6.22 then do copy star dot star on the win95 cd then run setup from the c drive setup exe no messing with files if you still have that Mac redo it with copy star dot star c:wind95 after you do c:/md c:/win95 so you do c:md then win95 e:copy *.* c:/win95 cd to change directory run setup exe

    If the Mac hangs or crashes while the PC is running, does it bring both of them down?

    • @netfreakcanada
      @netfreakcanada  4 роки тому

      Unfortunately yes. I did actually crash the Mac side during one of my test runs and the end result is the whole thing locks up so no keyboard and mouse. Hard to say if a running process on the PC side actually stays running while the rest of the thing is unusable though...

      @@netfreakcanada I ask because a neighbor of mine has a stack of old 6100 PC Compatibles (formerly owned by a city government) in various states of disrepair. Setting one up as a home server to host some old shareware was something I was considering, provided I could get any of them to work.

    • @netfreakcanada
      @netfreakcanada  4 роки тому

      I've got one of those too but the PC card software seems much harder to make work compared to this one. The 6100 is also a bit of a pain for other reasons like the CPU is super easy to physically break if you're putting new heatsink compound on or even just putting the DOS card in the slot (could push down on the Mac CPU).

    Hey Paul, I actually have one of these cars as well as all of it's accessories.
    Here's some pictures of the GIMO adapter.
    There's a cable that's the same on both ends, then there's this plug with some additional circuitry.

      Ah yeah that seems like something that normally came with the cards but people likely misplaced them over the years or they get tossed out.

    Can this PC Compatibility Card work on a Power Macintosh G3 (Beige) hence the card is PCI?

    • @netfreakcanada
      @netfreakcanada  4 роки тому +1

      I haven't confirmed it myself but it probably should work. The official documentation mentions I think almost all PCI models being compatible but this was prior to the G3 release so it wasn't specifically mentioned.

    Will you plan on installing Windows 98 on the Mac using that same DOS Compatibility Card? I tried finding footage of it to no avail.

    • @netfreakcanada
      @netfreakcanada  3 роки тому

      It might be worth a shot sometime. I wouldn't expect any problems with doing that since 95 and 98 I think are very similar for compatibility.

    Is there a way to do this the other way around, such as run Mac System 7 on a 90s ibm pc with a card?

    • @netfreakcanada
      @netfreakcanada  2 роки тому

      Such a product never existed as far as I know. Your only option is software emulation.
