  • Hello hello, today, we talk about something requested by a patron. Sci-Fi superweapons, the different types, what they do, how they work and a few examples of what I consider to be some of the scariest and worst possible weapons you can use. Mostly because they're dishonorable but also because they tend to go wildly out of control. So settle in and enjoy this romp through science fictions arsenal of stupid.

Fun fact about the Genesis laser in Gundam SEED, it's originally a means to launch ships to the outer reaches of the system.

@@andresmullerbeck2427you seem to have that reversed: any potentially interesting weapon can probably be reengineered into a method of interstellar travel.
Remember, there was once a plan to utilize nuclear charges to propel spacecraft into extrasolar space.

Reminds me of something from Niven's Known Space novels. The initial Kzinti assaults on the Sol System were repulsed by doing things like directing the laser ignition systems used to propel starships out of the system on incoming Kzinti ships.

The Death Star II was essentially all the flaws of the first worked out. The vulnerable exhaust ports were eliminated and replaced with much smaller vents scattered across the surface of the station. It had a far greater amount of anti-fighter defences than the original including quad laser cannons and concussion missle launchers. The biggest improvement was the superlaser. it wasn't necessarily more powerful, but most of the flaws of the original were fixed. it only took a couple hours to charge to full power rather than the day plus it took the first, plus with far more refined targeting systems and power management it was capable of being deployed vs capital ships (only taking a fraction of its output to obliterate a battleship vs a planet.)

    • @crysisrevelation6132
      @crysisrevelation6132 8 місяців тому +6

Agreed. And if the death stars were truly designed to fight the Vong in the future, rate of fire was going to be a major factor. Having a once per day fire rate is not a good thing when you’re facing down an entire swarm of planet sized spacecraft.

It also just had more surface-based anti-ship batteries of a variety of types, to let it attack anything that got close, and with a lot more range for those batteries than the first.
Also, a large part of that was backfill from writers having to figure out wtf to do with George Lucas' notes on the Death Star, because he's great at some parts of the movie making process and terrible at others, and scale is one of the things he's not so good at.

The Nova Bomb from Andromeda is said to screw around with a star's gravity. Basically shutting gravity off for a brief moment. That brief moment is long enough that the explosive expansion of the star runs wild.
Therefore if you shoot enough nova bombs into a black hole, you can make a white hole (As in the thing that is theorized to be the original big bang).

In the book series The Three Body Problem, there is a weapon called a dimensional strike which collapses space into a lower dimension. Literally pancakes planets, stars and everything. The crazy thing is that once the strike begins there is literally nothing to stop it from eventually consuming the universe at light speed so...superweapon is an understatement lol. The factions that wield this have already figured out how to live in 2D space so don't give a shit about what happens anymore.

I think the idea for the DS2 was that it could fire faster. Like how it was deleting rebel ships.
That, and it was still built to fight fleets and fighter swarms, not just planets. Because for some reason the Empire, even at the expense of their policing and counter-insurgency role they currently needed, insisted on designing their fleet as if fighting a pier in a conventional war (and terror, can't forget terror).

I really like the superweapons in the The Last Angel series. From giant railguns shooting small spaceships at over 90% the speed of light, weaponized FTL, missiles that turn gas giants into stars and bombs that deactivate the drive systems of entire fleets. And those are just the ones directly shown, more are described. And really advanced species have normal weapons that would in most settings count as Superweapons.

Four which I would like to point out are the Wave Motion Gun from _Space Battleship Yamato_ / _Star Blazers_ , which is one of the quintessential examples of a big space beam weapon; the Buster Machine III from _Gunbuster_ , which was essentially a galaxy-sized black hole bomb; the Krikkit Hypernova Bomb from the third _Hitchhiker's Guide_ novels, which would have simultaneously connected all of the stars in the universe via hyperspace into a single massive explosion; and the Suicide Night device from Larry Niven's Known Space series (specifically mentioned in the novel _A World of Ptavvs_ ), which sent a telepathic command to die which killed off all intelligent life in the entire Milky Way galaxy - including the ones who created it - about 1 billion years before the human race evolved.

A simple and effective physics based weapon I always remember from Ian Douglas's novels. Load a large freighter with simple sand. Accelerate it towards a planet until .99c. Release the sand to spread out into a cloud as it reaches the planet. Planetary Sand Blaster. And the real scary part is it comes in so fast there's no time to evade, or even figure out it's coming.

    • @mcchuggernaut9378
      @mcchuggernaut9378 8 місяців тому +3

Yeah, I read that book! Great fun. And It's something else that got left out here: Near-C impact weapons and mass drivers. Near-C involves accelerating something to close enough to light-speed that you get a massive fusion weapon when the kinetic force of an impact of even small amounts of mass moving that fast causes fusion and the accompanying massive release of energy you get from it. Mass drivers don't have to reach Near-C - you just do something like divert an asteroid or comet of sufficient mass into a planet - no fusion, and you can see it coming, but good luck stopping it and it will still wipe out all life on a planet if you use a large enough rock/chunk of mass.

I have a great love of high-mass relativistic kill vehicles. Chuck a large enough mass at a high enough speed to destroy, well, anything theoretically. My personal favorite is the idea of using a black hole and a portal styled looping worm hole to accelerate the matter of a gas giant to 99.9% the speed of light before yeeting that mass of physiced matter into the target.

When I was thinking of superweapons, there are some which jump to mind, although I can see the arguments why neither would have their own categories.
You mentioned the Vorlon anti-planet weapon, but you didn't mention the Shadow version as I think it could be its own category of the 'I have enough weapons that I don't need a dedicated superweapon.'
The second I was thinking of which can be weird to classify is aggressive terraforming. When you mentioned the Genesis laser, I was reminded of the Genesis project from ST:TMP. It is a device designed to be able to make planets and almost ends up causing a war since the Klingons saw it and said 'superweapon'.
Another thought are weapons which are just designed to make a planet uninhabitable. Sure, I can blow up your planet, but if I just make it that you have 6 months to relocate everyone, it might hurt more. It goes to the question brought up a 1-2 hundred years ago if it is more effective to shoot to wound, since the guy shot needs a lot more care than a corpse.
Special mention to the Stellar Orrery, as what is scarier than a holographic map of the galaxy which reacts to user input. As in, 'I click a button and can blow anything up.'

    Fun fact:
Though NOT stated in the lore as far as I am aware...
The ONLY thing that the Nova bomb could be that would behave as depicted is a gravity inversion weapon.
Star? invert gravity instant Nova (you will not not Super Nova which the Nova bomb does NOT do)
Planet? Only need the core of the weapon instant planet fly apart
Cross dimensional space wedgie that invaders are coming through? SUPER version of bomb that inverts gravity on their whole galaxy (as noted by Harper)
Magog World ship? shoot the reactor masquerading as a star... the emergency venting system vents it to space outside of the ship... (GRRR, bomb not big enough!)
Side note: Nova bombs are NOT point detonation they only need to go off 'close enough' to effect the target. Nova bombs DON'T actually burrow into the star, they just gotta get in blast range.
This also is a neat inversion of the Singularity Weapons the Magog use; given that Andromeda was very symbolic when dreamed up by Gene Roddenberry this is doubly likely.
Edit: 3rd category Von Neumann weapon (Organic or Mecha is irrelevant)

You might have to stretch the term “supper weapon” for this one; the Star Forge from KOTOR a giant station that uses both the sun and the force to create infinite resources that it then uses to just spew forth war materials to conquer the galaxy with.

  • @Duchess_Van_Hoof
    @Duchess_Van_Hoof 8 місяців тому +1

My favourite superweapons are in Star Wars, the unconventional ones.
The Star Forge is fuelled by the darkside and a sun, and produces anything from a droid to a capital ship. The downside is that it is practically sentient and pulls you into its will.
The Dark Force, or The Katana Fleet is just a bunch of old ships. 200 rugged heavy cruisers with a slave system. Highly cost-effective, and can be controlled from a single ship.
The Hand of Thrawn is a bit more abstract. It is a hidden fortress, with an immense data archive and star map at its center. It is a superweapon designed by one person, for his own use. The only superweapon Thrawn ever needed, information.

The improvements with the second death star were upgrades to the superlaser to let it rapidly fire at smaller targets like capital ships (not sure if that is still cannon post rogue one since they test fired it on bases in that) and partially fixing the exhaust port vulnerability by getting rid of the exhaust shaft and venting it over pinhole sized ports across the surface. that was why it had to be destroyed before completion, they failed to fix the unstable reactor flaw Galen Erso engineered into it but there would be no feasible way to exploit it in the second death star once the exterior was completed.

EMP weapons can also destroy electronic infrastructure. You can get those by using nuclear weapons in an unconventional manner.

Essentually it would modify space time by reducing the amount of dimensions that is currently in the area. Would reference this from te Three Body Problem: Death's End. They also have another "kinda" of dimensional wepaon where they permintally reduce the speed of light in a given area basically creating black hole like areas that prevent people inside of them from escalping

    > The first Death Star could already blow up planets, what could you possibly need more power for?

"What could you possibly need a more powerful Death Star for? You can already blow up planets..." - If you have to ask this, you might be missing the point of superweapons, lol. But in all seriousness, maybe they were going for the ability to take out small suns? I mean, Starkiller Base literally DID that in the "sequel" movie. The Farce Engorges.
Also, the only things you kinda' left out are bioengineered non-mechanical lifeforms like the Flood, the Tyranids, Orcs, and the Zerg. They aren't a disease, a chemical agent, or a robotic nano-plague or A.I. monstrosity like the Dhaleks or the Replicators. Just raw living things made to be super-weapons in themselves. Then there are Near-C collision weapons and mass drivers. Near-C is accelerating masses to near the speed of light (The constant "C") and using sheer speed to cause fusion. One book I know of involved literally hitting a planet with a shower of sand moving nearly at the speed of light. The resulting attack basically turned the entire planet's surface into a blanketing shotgun of fusion explosions and melted the entire surface to slag because of atmospheric fusion heating. Mass drivers are not near-C, just diverting big asteroids or comets or planets into things. Gets the job done just as well but doesn't require the acceleration and technical work a near-C weapon does. Ask the dinosaurs about what a big rock hitting a planet does...
Great video, though! Not knocking it. I enjoy these!

I don't think the coral qualifies.
Coral is a seemingly naturally occurring substance that, like methane, is terrifyingly dangerous when large volumes are mishandled (intentionally or otherwise), but generally useful for making things go. Skipping NG++'s final-mission-move in to anime "reality-nopes-out" ascension, the only major difference is that methane isn't intelligent and is unlikely to try and hack in to military hardware to defend itself when you ignore its request to not set it on fire.

Honestly Super Weapons do have a place in an empires space armada.
Sure our One (for now) Attack Moon or Behemoth Planetcraft that can take on enemies entire armadas.
May have cost half of our entire empire's economic output over the last half century, and have the subtlety of a brick wall and can only be in one place at a time.
But, Oh look what is that on the view port? Is that the Enemies Homeworld?
Remember, in Space you can go anywhere. And unlike the Death Star.
You better believe. An investment of this magnitude will have one hell of an escort fleet.

    Hypometric weapons from revelation space.
They simply make spheres of various sizes of matter disappear.
Noone really knows how they work and if you get something wrong, you are deleeted from reality including all memories of you. The closest approximatation to knowing how they work is like saying a cruise missiles is based on lightning and fire.

If I was to build a super weapon, I would build it on an effective existing warship design and gear it to 1 or more extremely niche uses, such as a combination of the star forge, arc hammer, world devastator, and galaxy gun

spoilers but in the book series of the three body problem, in the third book called deaths end an alien species sends something called a foil into the solar system and what it did was make it so that space in that region would would become 2 dimensional instead of 3 dimensional, flattening EVERYTHING in the area, the sun, planets, people, ect. And since its flattening space itself humanity couldn't escape the "explosion" since it was described as, "trying to swim up a water fall".

I wonder if "The Beast" from Homeworld Cataclysm would count? It's a biomechanical organism from another dimension/reality, it grows more intelligent the more it infects, it has one horrific ways of killing you, and an even more horrific way of NOT killing you, and not even the vacuum of space can protect you from infection if it gets within weapons range. The only thing that might keep it off the list is that there's no indication that anybody MADE it, it kind of just got stuck to somebodies ship when they flew through wherever "The Beast" came from, like a bug on a windshield..

The moment (said planet destroying box from doctor who) is the singular most terrifying weapon. For the sheer fact that it doesn’t just have the ability to target a planet, it can target the entire universe. And then time lock it so you have to quite literally violate the laws of time itself to undo anything.

That category of a machine virus eating everything on a planet reminds me of Horizon: Zero Dawn which had a thing called the Farro Plague. Basically Farro created machines that could self repair and replicate for the military and specifically didn't put a backdoor in them so that they couldn't be hacked.
This, as you can imagine, turned out well as at some point the machines just outright stopped responding to commands and started eating the people around them. Shortly after, Farro heard what was happening and instantly knew that this was it for humanity, he'd basically just doomed the world as the machines could self repair, self replicate, ran on biofuel, had an AI running them and were purposely designed to be unhackable.
On top of all that, the Farro Plague was causing absolute havoc on the environment, pretty much choking out whatever remained of humanity which is something that doesn't get pointed out to often with that sort of doomsday.
It was to the extent that humanity were tricked by the government into believing that they were fighting to slow down the Farro Plague while they found a way to hack into them, but were actually just slowing them down while scientists came up with a system to repopulate the world after they'd all died and another AI succeeded in shutting down the plague.

So... from the Perry Rhodan Universe... i am pretty sure in that one there is more than one planet killer weapon. But the one i encountered so far by listening to the NEO Audio Book Seriues would be the Arkon Bomb.
The Bomb starts a Fire that is impossible to stop. An all consuming Fire. Every Material or Gas will burn up. Fired on a Planet the Fire would completly consume the Planet. Depending on the Materials there it could take a few hours or days.
Imaging seeing a giant Wave of Fire on the Horizon coming closer and closer to you. Without any way to stop it. Yeah... that would be pretty scary.

There's an old indie game where you control droids with keyboard only from a top down view. The setting is about a computer virus infecting your space printer i think? The one that makes everything for you including food. Imagine having your morning breakfast one day then feeling strange later........... the possibilities of horror can ge unleashed this way creeping in as a silent death on a space civilization scale.
Also your 3D printer can print out the death nanites too so printers are scary and should not be connected to the internet. Cheers🤗☕

I think the USM Field Projector, carried by Magnetar class bsttlecruisers, are a bit overlooked.
Humans found a thing, decided it was a weapon and it is horrifyingly effective. It essentially creates a stargate that collapses in on itself, with catastrophic results.
The scary thing is that the weapon's output is higher than the energy needed to fuel it, it is as far as we know a physically impossible device.
Side effects include: system-wide mindwipe for all life forms for about 15 minutes. Oops.
    The Expanse is criminally underrated.

I lovr the giga structers mod from stellaris among the mega structures and giga structures it adds are the dyson beam, penrose sphere and a personal favorite system craft you take a solar system and bolt it all together use the star to power its main gun which fires forward AND backwords in time erasing songthing frome from existence, you can also weaponize the galactic core if its a quasar imagine the system crafts main gun if it could wipe out entire star clusters in one go.

My impression of the DSI v DSII power comparison is that it wasn't so much about a more intense shot, as it was about rate of fire. Notably at Endor the DSII was repeatedly shooting into the rebel fleet and popping ships like over-inflated balloons. I don't think that DSI would have been able to manage that kind of sustained repeat output.

Or their bigger brother in the Imperium's horrific weapon on the Psi Titans that is battery powered by psychic humans and they consume your soul and all the energy powering your body. In a giant blast. While also regrowing the damage to itself and messing with time. Old Man from Perry Rhodan ... There are these Arkon bombs, that basicly can set the planet on fire, and Old man has not one of those ... It has a FLEET of superheavy ships that by themself are build to counquer the galaxy without there supportships and every ship carries a few duzend (the small once) up to a few thousend of those if Old man wants it. It can produce them and scale anytime it wants ... same goes for the ships, btw.
You thing 40k is the realm of memes ... then Perry Rohdan is 2nd place - a very close 2nd place.

Rail guns in my opinion should be here in this video. Why do I think that might you ask? Well it’s due to the fact that the projectile fired by a rail gun doesn’t have an upper limit to the amount of speed the projectile can go. All that matters is how much power you can dump into the system meaning that if you have enough power you could realistically/theoretically crack a planet in half as long as you have enough power to dump into the system and fire a large enough projectile that when it collides with a planet sized object could very well crack it into pieces and probably… no certainly with enough speed go straight through it. But that’s just my opinion.

There’s also reality bending shenanigans or beings that can just delete your existence in an instant. (A-la doctor Manhattan)
Super weapons via Anomalous means Such as scp 2399 and are even coined by the scp foundation with term ‘eigenweapon’.
We can go even further and with mecha such as gunbuster and diebuster machines and the Titular Top with SUPER TENGEN TOPPA GURREN LAGANN! (I guess spiral warriors in general)
Even then not all super weapons need to be massive space stations. Like the requiem blaster and star saber from transformers or the gravitational beam emitter from blame!
Plus there are dudes who are just so goddamn angry that they can do it like Broly and especially asura from asura’s wrath.
