I have always used Reed as root stock. Never had any problems with root rot. Always healthy and strong. Some of my friends have used different root stock here in the subtropics and they have died after a few years. Not many but enough time wasted to not bother again
I've grafted a handful of times. The 1st time grafted 3, 2 took. They were pencil thin, so i used zip ties to help secure the graft on outside of tape. It worked. I tried it again with 2 graft, i thought at least 1 took but after removing tape it wasn't healed. I'm in south texas and going to grab some avocado from local farmers in Mexico on the side of tge road and try again letting the root get bigger. Using that tape, do you have to remove it or does it out "grow" it and bust through? Great video BTW
@@SunshineCountryChickens do avocado trees grow in your neighborhood? The best scions come from trees in your neighborhood, because you know that tree is well adapted to your area.
@@AJTheGraftMan I agree but I dont know of any local trees. These will be kept in pots. I have a lot of root stock I started from seed last year. We are zone 9a
A.J.! You changed your name and it looks like you've moved houses; where have I been? I graft my seedling avocados nearly identical as you, but I am in Florida and I use my Lula seeds for rootstock (cold hardy somewhat and do best in Florida's poor, salty soils...). However, I graft my seedlings much younger, right after the "water shoot" hardens up some. Cellular growth and differentiation is great then and the large seed is still nourishing the shoot and therefore the graft. I found if I wait too long (a year or more) and don't leave a leaf or two on the rootstock the graft will sometimes fail as the plant has no strength to nourish itself (no photosynthesis..) and the cotyledons of the seed have been used up. I usually do cleft grafts but a low veneer bud/chip also works, then decapitate the rootstock after the bud takes and shows growth/swelling.
Thank you for the valuable information. Your explanation makes a lot of sense, and I will certainly use it in the future. I really appreciate your knowledge and insight. Always great to hear from you!
I ate lots of Sapodillas in Mexico. Great fruit, intense flavor. Not sure if it does well in my area. I don’t know too many people growing it. Maybe I need to move to Florida and grow it and also mango trees 🙂
Can you make a follow up on these specific grafts in how ever many weeks when the leaves sprout through the tape? I am curious how long this will take and success rate. Thanks again for the informative video. After watching this I think my scions don't have a long enough tapered section. Are yours abut 1.5"?
Mismatch of smaller scion and big rootstock (mod cleft or bark graft)? Why use a box cutter vs a single bevel knife for making cleft? Success rate grafting these? Multi-Grafts take better or these young seedling grafts? Do you do Bud Grafts & do they take? Still use DG for potting soil? Please do a video on grafting lessons learned, changes made, and what went wrong.
How do you determine the rootstock? Would you say that it’s basically a supermarket avocado as rootstock? I have Oro Negro, Simmonds, Improved Pollack and Ronnie that I would like to graft.
Where I stay in South Africa we mostly use the local butter avo - basically a west indian variety with a big seed - as root stock. The shop bought hass, fuerte and gem avo seedlings aren't nearly as resilient. But that's here
Would you say about 6 weeks since its winter here in California? I just tried grafting a couple this past week, so we shall see how I did for the first time. 😅
Nice to see you action! Thanks AJ!
Thanks!

Busts through
My Reed avocado tree is popping right now!
Awesome 🥑👍🏽
Im trying to locate some scions, any suggestions?
Depends where you live.

@@AJTheGraftMan hey, did you ever get a Sapodilla, or have you tried a tree-ripened fruit yet?! You need to get a tree going, you won't be sorry.

Yes sure I can do that
Thanks for your valuable informations and demonstration. Would really love to have the nabal, oro negro and reed varieties in jamaica.
Thanks for watching! I hope to visit Jamaica one day. I can bring scions with me.

Great questions! I answer these questions and more in my other videos. Check them out on my channel!
How do you determine the rootstock? Would you say that it’s basically a supermarket avocado as rootstock? I have Oro Negro, Simmonds, Improved Pollack and Ronnie that I would like to graft.
Most rootstocks are fine, as long as they grow strong
Where I stay in South Africa we mostly use the local butter avo - basically a west indian variety with a big seed - as root stock. The shop bought hass, fuerte and gem avo seedlings aren't nearly as resilient. But that's here
How important are buds on the scion, because I bought scions off the net with no buds?
How old is that tree your grafting onto?
No buds, no successful graft
I have been trying to buy that tape, do you know the brand? Do they sell it on Amazon?
Where do you get the buddy tape?
Do you sell and ship the scions?
Not at the moment.
How long for a scion to take if you graft in January
Great question. That’s mentioned in the video.
