  • Check out this SUP How-To Guide, as Hala tech rep Paul Clark shows us how to assemble and install the Stompbox 2.0 retractable fin system, so you can slide over obstacles and play in shallow waters when paddling your inflatable Hala stand up paddleboard.
About the Hala StompBox 2.0 Fin System
Follow these steps to assemble the StompBox. Be careful not to strip the screws.
    1. Identify the parts: The StompBox, 9” fin (will work with the original StompBox 4.5” fin), Box cover, Spring, Spring cap, Two screws.
    2. Add the cap to the spring
    3. Connect the spring to the plastic knob inside the StompBox
    4. Slide the fin into the box cover, placing the round end of the fin into the slot on the cover.
    5. Hold the fin and cover together while assembling the cover on the StompBox.
    6. The notch on the fin rests on top of the spring/cap.
    7. Hold all pieces together to test the spring is aligned, allowing the fin to retract completely.
    7. Screw the cover to the StompBox using a Philp's head screwdriver. A powerdriver is helpful to securely seat the screws without stripping them.
    8. Test the fin, then you are good to go.
Follow these steps to insert the Stompbox 2.0.
    1. Partially inflate the board so the opening is deep enough to insert the StompBox 2.0.
Without any air the system will not fit into the board. All that is needed is about 1PSI to get the depth needed to insert the StompBox. More than about 8PSI will make the opening too tight to insert the StompBox.
    2. Once the slot in the board is open, check for debris or obstructions.
    3. Insert the StompBox into the slot and under the protective carbon hood. It should fit snugly and flush with the board.
    4. Smooth out any folds in the rubber collar of the StompBox so that it is flush with the board.
    5. The StompBox 2.0 accommodates the both 9” Stompfins (orange and Green) as well as the original StompBox 4.5’ Maroon fin.
    6. Continue inflating. Once your board reaches 12PSI, the StompBox is locked and will not fall out under normal use.
    7. You’re ready to hit the water!
Note: The retractable fin system is intended to reduce getting pitched off the board when the fin hits rocks. Sudden and unexpected momentum changes can still occur when the board itself makes contact with rocks and shallow water.
The StompBox 2.0 is new for 2021. It’s an upgrade from the original Stompbox. The Stompbox 2.0 allows a 9”fin to completely retract upon impact with rocks, shallow rivers, and when stacking on top of other boards.
The Stompbox 2.0 is also completely removable from the board, making it easy to replace, and allows the inflatable SUP board from the Hala River Series to roll up tight and compact.
The Stompbox 2.0 is featured on all of Hala’s Atcha boards (9’6, 8’6, 7’11), Hala’s river touring boards (Rado and Radito), and the Hala Fame fishing board.
The StompBox 2.0 and fin come unassembled together from the factory, but don’t worry - The assembly is quick and easy.
