  • How do dealerships tricks you to spend more? We show you the trick and how to respond. If you're thinking of buying a car in 2024, try to hold off until July 30. That's when the Federal Trade Commission's new CARS rule goes into effect, which forces dealers to stop using shady tactics like peppering you with hidden fees, overcharging for silly extras like nitrogen in your tires, and luring you in with fake online prices.
    Many dealers are honest and but how many will keep acting shady, even after the rules go into effect. I've seen car dealerships brazenly ignore consumer protection laws that are already in place. Which is why knowing these tricks can save you money.
    The CARS rule will help bring some controls on overcharges that consumers pay and have no clue on how to escape them.
    Here are the most common dealer ripoffs to look out for, and how to respond. Not every dealer will try such shenanigans, many of them are perfectly reasonable and easy to deal with, but some dealers will and it pays to be prepared!
    To end on a positive note, the CARS rule is a massive win for car buyers, and many dealerships didn't need it in the first place. But there are also dealerships out there that will try one of these sneaky tactics when you're shopping for your next car.
    But if you go in confident and prepared, you're more likely to walk away with the car you want at a price you can afford. Share this advice and help others.

    Recent shopping for a car I liked one at Auto Nation. They wouldn’t budge on the rather expensive price for the used car. The used car price was $52k. But when I requested the drive out price, it was $61k! Hidden in the price was three upcharges for about $5k. They would not negotiate. Walked out.

    One thing dealers love to sell you is GAP insurance to your loan & you can buy that elsewhere for much less. If you lease then GAP is automatically included.

    Great video, Lauren, as always! We just bought a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Summit Reserve. F&I guy tried to sell us on a warranty, we declined. Though I have to say, the dealer wasn't high pressure as we have experienced at some other dealerships. These things are a boondoggle, if you really want an extended warranty, buy it on your own, post purchase, for a lot less, the dealers make a lot of money on useless warranties!

      I have found that this is mostly not the case. I walked away from more than 25 deals last year and I did receive about five callbacks but none of those callbacks actually included the dealer wanting to make any concessions really on their price. A couple of them offered me a couple hundred dollars off but I was shopping used cars which had many thousands of dollars differentiation in price.

      @@daved6464 Well I was shopping from September through Mid December. Ended up buying a LEAF S Plus 2021 private party for $13k. Best price I had found in a dealer was $15k(plus fees) and this was after months of negotiating. So ultimately it ended up being thousands of dollars cheaper. Especially because the other cars were in other states; no dealers in the state of FL wanted to negotiate at all.... they wanted to sell high mileage cars for more than the private party guy.

    Dealers are sneaky with the Lemon Law too. They will list, describe, or categorize the same repeat problem differently every time to avoid triggering the Lemon Law requirements. They will also get the manufacturer involved to do a non-repair manual approved patch job, write you a small check, and then have you waive the rest of your warranty. Alternatively, the dealer and manufacturer will ignore a known problem, and blame the customer for not knowing how to drive.

    Here in Virginia the dealers are allowed to add a $500 "prep" fee to the sale of EVERY vehicle. No exceptions. This is a load of crap as I used to live in NYS and the same fee there was $90 which basically pays for all of the dmv and insurance transfer for the customer, which was still high, but most customers never questioned as they DON'T want to go to the DMV.

  • @jmanko
    @jmanko 20 днів тому +1

    Gap insurance is a big ripoff. It's padded big time by the dealership and how they present it to you is how much more per month you'll be paying instead of the total amount of the insurance because if they told you that, you would freak out. Honestly skip the gap insurance. However if you still feel you need something, many auto insurance companies offer "new car replacement insurance" where if you total your car, they will pay you what the next model year car would cost so you can pay off your current loan in full and most likely have money left over to buy another car. Way better than gap insurance since you wouldn't get extra back on top of paying off the loan if you went with gap. And this addon for your car insurance is like 25% the cost of gap insurance over five years (typical auto loan). so you save money.

  • @Jimster481
    @Jimster481 18 днів тому

    I have found that most car dealers at least here in Florida do not want to negotiate at all. I wasted three months last year trying to negotiate for a Nissan Leaf which was not even a car that was selling. Most of these cars are actually still for sale six months to eight months later and the prices have not changed very much. I really don't know what's going on with the car market but the dealers are probably all going to go bankrupt. To me, it makes no sense to not negotiate at all, and honestly, this is just their standard policy here in Florida now.
    This new law to stop them advertising garbage pricing needs to come quickly because my experience is that 90% of dealerships have totally fake pricing and include many thousands of dollars in fees on top of their listed car price. Some of them as much as $10,000 in fees, which is utterly ridiculous.
