However, in one occasion a group of 12 young men were not allowed to join the family puja due to some disputes. So they started the first "Baroari" Puja- Baro means 12 and ari s a derivation of yaari or friends. This became the first instance of a public puja where everyone was welcome. This first public puja was Bagbazar Sarbojanin and was started in 1918 . A pandal is a temporary structure constructed to house the Goddess. Now this has become a huge phenomenon with about 40000 public pujas in Kolkata alone. Also, the Durga Puja in Bengal is celebrated as a homecoming of the Goddess to her paternal home accompanied by her children. At the end of her holiday she returns to her husband's home. That's why the mood is of celebration , feasting and fun just as it would be when the daughter comes home.

Baghbazar Sarbojanin started in 1917 . Community celebration existed for a long time. We criss-cross crossed whole of Kolkata pandel hopping in the 1970s and 80s as kids😊. Ofcourse the scale and artistry has gone bigger in recent times.
