I should say; one interesting aspect of the minotaur myth is that it's based on something much older than the Greek myth itself. Crete had a pretty ancient civilisation on the island, the Minoans, who used a LOT of bull iconography in their paintings and sculptures, which were left behind in ruins the Greeks would have known of, ancient even to them. It's thought that the Greeks based the minotaur on the depictions of bull-headed men, and used it to slander the people of Crete as barbaric given the unpleasant details of the story. In fact, you can read the whole story as metaphorical with Theseus representing the Greeks and the minotaur representing the Minoans! They did the same with the cyclops myth, basing that on mammoth skulls.
35:54 fun fact here Ariadne while abandoned on this island, apparently looked so sad that Dionysus, the god of wine said "Ay bro wtf up with my family" took pity on her and tried to save her from the island, they got married some years later, with her taking ambrosia and becoming the lady of the labyrinth. It is famously and ironically, the only relationship that doesn't cheat on each other, in the entirety of greek mythology, even hades gets one. BONUS CONTENT This is I assume every night that they live together "Honey I'm home" a very drunk Ariadne "I MADE 15 LABYRINTHS AND I'M PUTTING THE GODS IN THEM" "I love you" "LOVE YOU TO NOW GET IN THE LABYRINTH"
There is actually one tale where dionysus cheats on ariadne and as an apology creates a constellation of stars for her (the crown or diadem) but theres an alternate version where the constellation was a wedding present, no cheating involved. I choose to believe that one is “canon”
Dionysus, god of wine and debauchery and epic orgies, doesn't cheat? That's hilarious to consider. But there are so many versions of Greek mythology that you could probably find one or two other faithful couples....
@@Andre-c6z It's the guy that made the ariadne and the medusa retellings isn't it, he also made hades and persephone cheat on each other so I wouldn't be surprised
You can't trust any of the gods - you are their plaything, they do whatever they want to you! Sometimes I really get why ancient people saw the old testament to be mercifull compared to the "old gods" 😂😂
The first Poseidon and Zeus bits are even funnier when you consider that he's Zeus' brother, so Minos decided to ask his uncle for help over his father
Chronos and Cronos are two seperate greek mythological figures often confused for each other. I'm cultured and a party pooper explaining the joke... (loved the video Jeff you are on a roll)
While they were two separate figures, the confusion between them and sometimes deliberate identification between them dates all the way back to Ancient Greece. So even when trying to talk about "accurate" mythology, conflating the two isn't necessarily incorrect, since the confusion occured even then. (To be clear, I'm not correcting you, just expanding more on your explanation)
Knowing how the names are pronounced in Greek and nearly the entirety of the Mediterranean area, this video receives a gloriously unseen segue from comedy to tragicomedy.
My favorite part of this myth is that Ariadne gave Theseus a ball of twine which in ancient Greek is clew and this is where the modern word clue comes from 😊😊😊
@ZanesFacebook It’s half right as it’s from the word “clew” which does means ball of twine, but it’s not a Greek word, it’s from middle English (the root of the word being from Germanic). It’s likely the word used in a *translation* of the Greek myth, not originating from Greek itself. From some very very brief searching, it would be “νήμα“ (pronounced “nêma”) in Ancient Greek.
12:39 " I COULD HAVE WATCHED AFTER EFFECTS CRASH EIGHT TIMES IN THAT TIME" Is a hell of a line and is a sentence that I unfortunately relate to. Banger video as always, looking forward to more. The hard work really shows off.
i just discovered your saw video and watched it over the course of several days and watched a few more last night. very glad to be here for a fresh upload! this channel seems like top tier youtube content and i am very excited to be part of the club now.
Water-related gods seem to be related to bulls in Greek myth, like the Potamoi (river gods) who could transform into them. I wonder if that informed the whole Zeus transformation escapade and Poseidon's chad bull situation. As a fun side note, Dionysus (who rescues and marries Ariadne in some versions of the myth) is sometimes called a bull, bull headed, or horned, and is sometimes depicted with horns. I've even seen theories that the Ariadne/Dionysus pairing is an echo of an earlier Cretan myth about the union of an earthly queen and a divine bull, and that Theseus and the labyrinth were a later insertion by conquering mainlanders. I don't have an opinion on what version is "correct" as I'm no expert, but it's certainly interesting!
I thought this channel didn’t really have a cohesive theme (which is totally fine with me), but I just realized the theme is “storytelling in general” and I’m so thrilled. ❤
