RULES:
The rules are the same as regular chess, except for these changes. Give each player a standard set of chess pieces in opposing colors. Place 1 puzzle board tile in the center of the table as the game board and give each player 8 puzzle board tiles. Pick a player to go first then turns alternate. On your turn, connect 1 of your puzzle board tiles to any available spot on the gameboard with a minimum of 1 connection points. Orient the tile or flip it over to retain the checkerboard pattern. Place one of your pawns on your placed tile to indicate it is yours. Pawns are only used during setup to distinguish each player’s tiles and not used for play. You may not move a puzzle board tile once it has been placed. And you are allowed to connect to an opponent’s placed tile. Once all the tiles have been placed, the board is now built.
Players now simultaneously place their non-pawn chess pieces on any of their controlled tiles, removing the pawns from those tiles. Players may move and rearrange their pieces as many times as they want. You may place your bishops on the same color spaces if you want. You may not place your king into check, nor may you place a piece in a position that checks your opponent’s king. Once all players are satisfied with their positions and no more rearranging happens, then remove any remaining pawns from the board and the game begins.
Pieces move like they normally do, with these distinctions. Knights can jump over gaps in the board so long as they retain their “L” movement and land on a physical square. Bishops and Queens can travel diagonally between tiles with adjoined corners even if they aren’t connected by the tabs. You are not allowed to castle. this variant has one fatal flaw: the way you set up the pieces doesn't have a stop condition, so you may (and with optimal play I suspect will) enter into a situation when the two players shuffle endlessly in a loop.
In some cases where players are perfect that they know and will try to get the best starting situation, the positions could be sort of rock paper sissors and as this comment above said, get stuck in infinite loop of shuffle endlessly.
It doesn't really look like to happen in real life but just imagining it blow my satisfaction.

I was thinking of the exact same thing -- you can initially place your king in say, near the middle of the board, which would potentially seal off a lot of possible locations for your opponent to slot their queen/bishop, only for you to replace your king at the very end. I'd say either players should take turns placing pieces and cannot move them once placed (thus adding a lot of strategy during setup as well) or make it so that pieces can be placed to check a king but only the king can be freely moved around, while limiting other pieces to only be replaced once or twice -- anything that'd stop an infinite metagaming before the game even starts
@@iCarus_A Another option will be to not allow to put the king on the board until all non-king pieces are on the board. That will let the players freely put their pieces, and they only need to figure out where to put the king at the end without making it in check.
I would just put time limit on it, so it doesn't take forever

This actually reminds me of a chess mod that I came up with, called Swiss Chess. Basically, whenever a piece is captured, a "hole" is created at the capturing piece's original location, preventing other pieces from moving through it. For example, if a rook moves from C2 to F2 and captures a pawn, C2 now has a hole and cannot be travelled through or landed on.

A variation I came up with:
You write down where you want to place your pieces, then the placement commences. Nothing can be changed except if a king is in check. Then both the king and the pieces checking the king must be replaced elsewhere. This prevents infinite shuffling.

Totally wasn't screaming at the screen upon the realization both white and black tiles have both connection points, making it possible to connect them the wrong way.
They could've just made one shade have male connection points and the other have female connection points. It's so simple, I came up with the idea by the time I even saw the tiles.
Don't know the company, but if I had to guess. It was cheaper to have a setup to cut out one shape of pieces and just make both white and black that shape as opposed to two unique cuts. Again, might be bullshit, but I assume that was the case.
I mean, if they have more than 1 cutter, I feel like it's worth the added cost. If not, I guess it is what it is. Depends on the exact engineering approach. I mean, if it's laser cut, there's no excuse. (...or maybe there is, huh...)

This reminds me of a computer game I played that had you playing a knight and you had traverse the world using only the L movement of a knight. There we bosses of the other pieces that had the same movement rules placed on them. I think you had to save the queen to win.

This tells me that minor pieces as bishop and knights are going to be more OP than the rook. For queen probably having a bit hard time to coordinate.
As a self-aware and proven-skilled chess player, I think two bishops are the most powerful pieces on the board. I have to defend them as not being minor or less powerful than rooks.

The piece placement phase is dumb, you want to get an advantage so it will never end as you can keep moving pieces until you have an advantage; but your opponent will try to do the same, forever.

I got it but its kinda hard to put the puzzleboard pieces togather sometime.
Here's one I named endless deads (after stick war legacy's gamemode name)
Pick the white or black pieces and set them up as a normal game the opponent dosent get to but gets points. Every match every one of the enemies pieces are captured the match ends all pieces set as accordingly or if a piece such as a pawn was captured you can move another pawn to it's original spot or keep it where it is. Starts as 1 points 2 3 4 etc. Pawns are 1 points knights are 2 bishops and rooks are 3 queen is 4 and king is 5 I'll get to the cost later. If a piece is eliminated from your side you can revive it but only by surviving rounds and selecting it to revive pawn 1 round knight 2 rounds bishop rook 3 queen 5 and if your king is captured it's instant game over. When a enemy king is made it will cost the opponent 5 points but the king can summon units when turns pass 2 turns pawn 3 knight 4 bishop rook and 5 queen. Essentially survive as long as you can as no matter what the opponent will eventually win. To make the win you must survive more rounds then the opponent when a rotation is made deads becomes you and your enemy becomes humans. Let's say you survived 14 rounds and your opponent survived 13 that's a win. Dead pawns also promote when they reach the other side and can also become king but yours can't, just the normal queen and below. That is my gamemode any ideas from you?
