If you really want the true feel of a supermoto (Like NTK, Querly, BLDH etc) then get either Husqvarna FE501 or KTM 500EXC. I wish I had gotten one of them as a first bike cause a 250 wasn't enough, but I don't know your capability so I can't really say to get a 500cc 100%. Either way, now that I have my FE501, I am so glad I made the choice.

I always liked supermotos, between the sound and feeling of the big thumping single and the little itty bitty wheels that look like they'd be absolutely heaven on a windy mountain road. In fact my favourite vehicle in Vice City is the original Sanchez. But the downside, for me at least, was that being that they were based on off road bikes they made design sacrifices for off road ability that were a drawback in other areas, sky high seat height first and foremost. I always wished that there were more modern single cylinder road oriented sport bikes. Well nowadays we're spoiled for choice in that regard. In fact I'm picking up a Svartpilen 401 this week. But I still have a place in my heart for those sky high supermotos.

Hey Yams, love your content but I think you missed a mark in your video. I feel that you should have included the KTM 500 EXC. Although not a factory supermoto, they make for excellent supermotos (I own one and so do many of my friends). The KTM 690 is not a true supermoto, it's heavier and feels more like a traditional motorcycle. The KTM 500's make for perfect supermotos and are really not that bad to own. They come street legal from the factory and conversion isn't terribly pricey either. You can get a set of custom color warp 9's with larger rotor, caliper bracket, cush drive hub, and michelin pilots for around $1,100. The bike also does not require as much maintinence as everyone thinks. Oil changes and valve checks every 30+ hours when street riding and often the valves do not move. The 500 wieghs 250lbs and rips through every gear. It is one of the most fun bikes I have ever owned! Hope this helps some people.

      @fwijffels 10 місяців тому +1

Bro, a valve job every fucking 30h, are you kidding me? And changing oil every 10h I'm sure.
This is exactly the reason why people take the 690. Its 150kg might be heavier than the average dirt bike, but it's way lighter than any other kind of motorcycle.
It also has a larger gas tank, higher gearing etc, which makes it a WAY better road bike than any dirt bike.

@@fwijffels They compare ultra light racing bikes to a full Euro5 complete bike. Place a Ti full exhaust, Li battery, remove sas, filters, mirrors and anything that does not exist in the lighter bikes and the weight difference will be much closer, while reaching 200Km/h rock steady plus being able to carry a passenger and have normal service interval s with maybe better or close enough power/weight ratio than the 500s. I would sure fancy a TM sumo but only if i lived in the twisties and had a second bike to move around.

Yammie - I love your content dude, but I can't stand by while you try to assert that a factory supermoto like the DRZ400SM is a better option than a WR450F converted... Yes, the manual says the WR needs servicing every 5 hours, valves every 40hrs and a rebuild every 100hrs. That is assuming that it's being used in racing conditions...
I service my bike every 10~15hrs depending on how I've been riding it, it gets fresh oil every service, but only takes 1L of oil, so that's cheap. I do the oil and oil filter every 2nd service, 1L of oil and a $7 filter. I have two air filters that are washed and swapped out each service...
I can do a full service, oil and filters in under 30 minutes... The WR is 127kgs wet, makes 49hp with a pipe and a re-map... She's been indestructible thus far.
I do all the work on it myself, and yes, its a bit of work, but if you really want a Supermoto - you fall in love with the work. An SMC R is a nice bike but she's 50kg heavier than a supermoto should be, the drz is heavy and underpowered...
Get yourself an enduro bike and convert it, hell, if you're a real man with big balls, get you a 300cc 2 stroke that's 98kg and 50hp and do powerwheelies in 6th!

    • @varck7935
      @varck7935 3 роки тому +1

Amen to that! I ride an FE501 and do exactly the same as you! New oil every 10-15 hours, new filter every second oil change, clean air filter whenever it needs it. Had a full service done on it cause previous owner rode enduro which broke a couple things, so that wasn't cheap. But now it's a beast with no issues at all. Converting an enduro is definitely the way to go for sure!
EDIT: Wait a minute! I've seen your bike before on Facebook i think! You ride here in Australia too haha. That's sick

690 is not 50Kg heavier. You are comparing race bikes with a 200km/h beast that can carry a passenger and has normal intervals. Place a full Ti exhaust and Li battery, remove sas, air filter and anything useless and the weight difference will drop significantly, while retaining the bike's overall superiority. With a 690 you don't necessarily need a second bike, while you keep 95% of the fun. If you need 100% fun, then get a a TM racing why do you even bother with conversions.

The KTM 690 SMC-R is one of the most epic motorcycles ever produced, by anyone. Great power, handles terrific, great suspension, good electronics, up and down quick-shift, and actually designed for long service intervals and capable of loads of street (and track) miles.... cobbling a Sumo to together from a dirt bike..... can't imagine why anyone would bother. DRZ400SM? I had one... nice enough bike for the money, but pretty much feels dead by comparison to the SMC-R. It is just so under-powered. Same with the WR250X... had one of those too.

Poppa yamz i come here as a proud dr650 owner who just had his first bike, a Harley Davidson fatboy come back into my life. This comes at a time when both kids will be in school next year and the mrs is showing interest in wanting to learn to ride. I always figured the dr650 mild manored and forgiving enough for someone like her to learn on…. But she is vertically challenged, so i just ordered a sweet lowering kit in the appropriate color scheme, a shorty kick stand, and am now pondering the smaller wheels and tires of the super moto to get it low enough, make it look cool, and if i can swing the big bucks, make the god forsaken tubed tires tubeless. Im fairly certain the good people at pro cycle will blow coffee out of multiple orfices when they see my email asking for tire size recommendations for their 17” warp 9 aluminum mag rim kit, and if a set of dunlop trailmax missions can be had to fit those rims. Im a complicated guy but i swear it would make sense for us. Love you stuff bubba. Sorry it took me 3 years to get here.

@yammie Noob. So I just did one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.... I returned my motorcycle rental I have been on non stop for the last day or so. It was an RnineT and It blew my mind. The tiger I reserved was broken so the upped me to this bike and I’m in love. If you remember my comment, on you guys not needing to understand the Harley way of riding; I can honestly say that I think I understand where you are coming from. The RnineT I road was a complete departure from every other bike I have ridden; A paradox that both talked to me, and tried to yeet me to the moon on more than one occasion. Yammie, Spike, of you can get your hands on one please do. It hit ALL of my “I need a bike that will look me in the eye and have a conversation” feels.... then Rip my face off when I pin the throttle and bang gears. As someone who overwhelmingly rides harleys, the bike I just finished riding was a paradox of shake/rattle/role, and pure unadulterated power.
Finally. Thank you, you inspired me to try a different way of riding through your willingness to do the same.
And yes. Seriously, go ride the Beamer spike.. it blew this sportster bro’s mind.

Biggest thing to factor in when buying a sumo is location. I have to ride 200+ miles roundtrip to get anywhere interesting, and because I'm a procrastinator I end up leaving too late and then being in a rush and am forced to take the highways. The other day I spent FIVE HOURS roundtrip on the highways which is not fun at all. If you live in the mountains or near lots of good off roading trails, go for it, but if you live in a boring ass location and still insist on a sumo, you have to be willing to take it on the highway OR spend several hours on country roads - the latter is still quite fun, but you'll need to allocate your entire day just to travel. I guess if you have a pickup truck you could mitigate this though.

The factory vs conversion segment was pretty spot on.
There is a lot of nuance though.
Some conversions aren't as bad in terms of maintenance. Bikes that are made for long distance racing tend to be pretty good as far as maintenance.

And XR650R has no Euro5 restrictions or ABS and so on to make it heavier, not mentioning it is kickstarter and has an anemic front brake... Remove the trash from the 690 and you can pretty much come down to XR weight. They we talk about suspension and so on.

Sumo’s are the absolute best all around bike for urban, tight twisty back roads, and with the right tires, some light to moderate off road. I’ve owned a DRZ with every mod under the sun and the only complaint I had was it needed a few more hp and a 6th gear for riding in Houtex. That’s why I bought a 701SM. If I weren’t getting too fkng old (51) or had a longer than 30 inch inseam, I’d still have one. (Throwing a leg over ain’t as easy as it once was.) That said, track days, riding on the beach, jumping parking blocks or curbs to avoid Houston’s traffic, blasting back roads, wrangling cows from the road back into their pasture or just general hooligan f*€k3ry… sumo is the most fun I’ve ever had on two-wheels.

My first proper bike is a Gas Gas sort-of factory 250 2-stroke supermoto. The service manual states service intervals measured in races. It has no key and a kick start and 1 tank gets you 50miles. The manual states you should do a 35 bolt tightness check before every ride. Its completely stupid but I regret nothing. NOTHING!

due to the stringent emission regulations
having a road-legal supermoto in my country Taiwan is a dream of lots of Taiwanese riders out there
    even a 2005 drz400sm could cost 7,000USD as average !
(u can even buy one and sell it costing 0 Depreciation Expense)
Q1: how about some small replacement japanese dual-sport bike?
    A : for example brand new CRF150L would cost like 5,500USD and a CRF250LD is like 8,200USD
(PS. bikes under 251cc don't have the right to ride on freeways , Expressways , highways also no turning right at lots of intersections etc. )
    Q2: how about a SMCR 690 or a supermoto 701?
A : they cost like 25,400USD brand new and they're soooooo rare (10 bikes per year or something like that I believe)
Q3: any supermoto made by Taiwan makers?
A : yes for sure but they don't have good quality to rely on most of the time(most riders in Taiwan knows well what I'm talking about...)
would like to know if there's other countries with similar situations...
I'll answer questions if anyone want's to know more

XT was heavy, lazy low power motor, bad frame, bad suspension, bad brakes. No comparison to 690. XT: 173Kg/48Hp, 690: 147kg/74Hp. And imagine XT had no Euro5 restrictions or ABS that bring weight and lower the power....

How about a used Husky smr510, 511...Aprilia sxv 450, 550, or even a Husaberg fs 650, 570...those were all street legal, almost race ready sumos from the mid 2000's. And not to forget you can do a factory conversion from Beta nowadays with the BYOB program, or go the exotic route and get one of the many TM's or even a SWM ( basically a rebranded smr510)...

i opted for a honda crf230m. I got mine with a spare set of rubber for 2200 and it came with the factory service manual. Factory 17 inch wheels, 6spd, not super fast only goes about 75 but doesn't feel too bad for a thumper. bike was only available here in the usa for the year 2009.

Well you basically just crushed any dreams I had about converting a dirt bike to a sumo. Im not spending 2 grand on new wheels and all that other shit when I could just buy a husky 701 or a Ktm factory sumo. You basically confirmed all my current suspicions about the hassle of converting a dirt bike. Just more hassle than its worth, along with more maintenance. It would be cool to have a bike that you could switch tires and go from dirt to street, but then you mine as well just have 2 bikes. One for street and one for dirt dedicated.
