    That must've been an incredibly cramped journey for the kerbals being inside the Apollo command module for the whole first leg of the mission

      Kerbals can transfer through fuel tanks so I don't think they suffered too bad.

      @@znatrix Presumably there could’ve been an alternate design where the CSM would dock to one side, the MMP and CDR would EVA to the LM, and dock it to another side

    Nice, man 👍. Really liked it. I'm a sucker for Apollo tech being used for a Mars mission and I am a sucker for Post Apollo mission concepts. Makes me wish there was a Mars landing in 1981.

    Suggestion. You could have sent the hab module up on an unmanned Saturn 5 (or Saturn 6 whatever you would call that rocket) then launch the command module and lander up and dock them to the hab module so they are connected for the entire journey. The lander would only be deployed once you reach mars.

    Huh, is that Saturn V stretched? The tanks seem longer. If it is, nice bit to make it a little more believable!

      It sure is! Both of them even. They also have more engines to increase the thrust (not on first stage).

      @@znatrix even if the first stage didnt have an extra engines, the center engine kept burning till stage sep. (irl they shut down the center engine early to limit the acceleration to a survivable level) even if it wasnt intentional i still think thats a cool little detail!!

    Apollo had no ability to have the fuel or other resources for a trip to Mars and back.

    You know, you could use KSRSS at stock scale (you can configure it easily from the configuration.cfg file) so that you can actually use mars, but with kerbal DV. I made a tutorial on my channel.

    I really love the modified Apollo hardware to go to mars. was this based off of any actual plans for hardware configurations?

      there were proposals to use a wetlab for the third stage to do a crewed flyby of mars

    That was really cool! One question I have is about the second capsule, that re-entered soon after entering LEO. What was its purpose? Looks like the only thing it did in the video was to pull the lander out of its storage place on top of the 3rd stage.

      That pretty much was it. I was thinking that it would cost too much to create an entirely new top of the rocket so they would just use old proven tech to save some money.

      Yep, I have used it for a couple of videos however I find it looks pretty bad when you are at the ground of a planet.

    Why the leg of the lander leave the surface of mars whith the capsule only to be detached midfly?

      So the lander has enough DeltaV to get into orbit. It is a modified LEM

    I have an small but important issue, so this Space Station looking thing was not accessible thru a flight to Mars stage at all? It was a hughe waste os space and resources then.

      In theory they could have started inside the station. They just wouldn't have windows. And the LES would be useless. The dockings could have been remote control.
