How to remove rust and corrosion from a vintage Singer sewing machine

Most of my vintage Singer sewing machines are mint (or near mint). But recently I bought a Singer 20-10 Sewhandy mini sewing machine. The ad had only one photo and yet I bought it. Not a very clever thing to to... The metal plate on this Sewhandy was covered in a thick layer of rust. So my next question was: How can I remove most of the rust and how to stop rust from spreading?
In this video I’ll show you what I did to remove the rust (or corrosion). And to make it (sort of) shine again!
My first time sanding and polishing metal.

@@erikneek. It’s like removing everything on the metal and it turns new condition without polishing or scratching the metal. By the way just bought 3 sewing machines. Singer 15-91. Very good shape. I’m starting collecting like you.

Some chemical rust removers are very effective with no mechanical action. I would otherwise use sandblasting.

From what I read about replating parts of vintage sewing machines, the result is usually disappointing.

Well, difficult question. I was lucky enough to buy a mint 201k (1939), an aluminum 201k from the 1950's, a 221k Featherweight and a really strong and capable 78-1. Those four will stay with me.
There is only one machine on my wish list: a rare Singer 30k mini sewing machine. If I find one I will use it for a tutorial - I already have the script done 🙂
