As a lover of history and quaint towns, I recently took a day trip to Merrickville, Ontario, and was pleasantly surprised by the charm and beauty of this little gem of a town. Dubbed ‘the Jewel of the Rideau,’ Merrickville is located near the midpoint of the Rideau Canal system, and its beautiful heritage buildings, antique shops, and vintage cafes make it a favorite weekend getaway spot for tourists and locals alike.
My first stop was the Merrickville locks, constructed as part of the Rideau Canal in the early 19th century to defend against the possibility of an American attack during the War of 1812. These locks are still in constant use today, and it was fascinating to watch the boats passing through the three detached locks, each opened by hand with a large wheel. The bridge is also a swing bridge, which is a rarity these days. The park area around the canal is perfect for a picnic or a leisurely stroll, and the trails are short but lovely to explore.
The largest blockhouse on the Rideau is also located here in Merrickville, built-in 1832 and now operating as a museum. It was interesting to learn about the history of the area and the construction of the Rideau Canal, which was built primarily for strategic military purposes during a time when Great Britain and the United States vied for control of the region. I was fascinated to discover that the locks bypassed the mills in Merrickville, leaving them intact and allowing the community to continue its thriving business.
The Merrickville ruins were another highlight of my trip. These ruins are in great condition and provide a unique glimpse into Canadian history. I wandered through the remains of the woolen mill leased to Thomas Watchorn, which operated for 106 years until it was destroyed by fire. The ruins have been stabilized and barred off, but it was still a nice walk down to the Rideau River at the lock station.
Aside from the historical attractions, Merrickville also offers a great shopping experience. There are many antique and vintage shops as well as cafes and specialty shops. I loved browsing through the shops, and I even picked up a few souvenirs to take home with me. The locals are incredibly friendly, and I even had the pleasure of meeting the Town Crier, which was a unique and unexpected experience.
In conclusion, my day trip to Merrickville was a lovely escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The town’s picturesque scenery, historical attractions, and charming shops make it a perfect spot for a weekend getaway or a day trip from Ottawa or Kingston. I highly recommend visiting Merrickville and exploring all it has to offer.
